I'm happy to announce that due to a significant increase in interest, we're reviving the CC28 Video Masquerade.

Complete submission guidelines should be posted later today, but here are some basics:

Anyone (not just CC28 members) may submit a video for consideration (all videos will be reviewed before inclusion).

If we have more than 5 accepted submitted videos, we'll organize judging. In any case, all accepted videos will be screened at CC28.

Videos should feature costumes; all types of costumes are appropriate, but the video must be acceptable for viewing by a PG-13 audience.

Submissions will be accepted and distributed digitally. (details to follow)

Step one: EMAIL US AT vmasq@cc28.org to inform us of your entry NO LATER than April 15.

Hooray! I had a very silly conversation yesterday with the owner of the property where I plan to film. Explaining our hobbies to others can be...entertaining. Thanks to Kevin and Andrew for making this happen!

Thanks to a sudden revival of interest, we are working to have a Video Masquerade at Costume-Con 28 (Milwaukee, May 7-9, 2010) after all. Because we are working in such a short time frame, we’ve decided to simplify things a bit and run it as a short costume film festival.
What we are looking for
1. Short films/videos featuring you or your friends in costumes! (This is, after all, a Video Masquerade). Costumes of any genre are appropriate, including costumed puppets and dolls.
2. Submissions must be appropriate for a mixed (mostly adult, but some youngsters) audience. As with Costume-Con stage masquerades, aim for the equivalent of a PG-13 rating.
3. Submissions should be short, typically no longer than 6 minutes.
We will happily consider longer videos, but please, no epic feature-length films.
4. All videos will be reviewed for qualification before inclusion in the Video Masquerade. (Submission of a video does not guarantee inclusion)
Who May Enter
5. Anyone may submit videos to be considered for inclusion in the Video Masquerade Film Festival. Membership in Costume-Con 28 is not required. (In the event your video wins an award, however, you would need a membership to accept said award in person at CC28).
How to enter
6. Notify us of your intention to enter (email vmasq@cc28.org) and upload the online version NO LATER than April 15, 2010,
7. All accepted submissions will be screened for the judging panel, if any, and all attendees of Costume-Con 28. By submitting your video for inclusion, you are granting us the right to multiple such screenings without expectation of remuneration or other consideration.
8. All videos must be submitted digitally.
1. By April 15: upload to YouTube, Vimeo, or another online video hosting service. We will be using those uploaded videos for initial review, and as the distribution route for any judging panel.
Please set the videos to be shared privately until after the festival.
2. By April 30: A high-resolution version must be provided to us to use in the on-site screenings. Details and file format information will be provided to you.
9. Please provide a cast and credits list for your entry, so that accolades may reach the appropriate parties. Be sure to credit the creators of the costumes!
10. Please indicate whether you are a film or video professional. If the costumers/cast in your video have competed in stage masquerade contests, please also indicate at what skill level they compete. (This latter part is for information only).
Judging and awards
11. If we receive more than 5 qualified submissions, we will assemble a judging panel to select awards. We may also have a ballot for CC28 attendees to select their favorite submission.
12. Documentation about your entry is not required, but, if you wish to provide it, it will be reviewed by the Judging Panel.
13. The only skill divisions in the event of judging will be between Amateurs and Professionals. A Professional is someone that works in Film or Television and, therefore, has access to a better quality of editing equipment. Ron Howard and Mike Nesmith would both be considered Professionals.
14. In the event of formal judging, entries will be judged on several different criteria. These include, but are not limited to, Overall Presentation, Costume Quality, Location/Set Quality and/or Uniqueness, and Technical Merits. The original idea was to do a masquerade entry that can not normally be presented in a hotel situation. Such as a huge quantity of people in the entry, special prop requirements, such as horses, fire effects, or truly unique settings that can not be quickly placed on a stage. As an example of what could be done in a Video Masquerade Entry, check out http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/pingpong.php

PLEASE feel free to share this notice with others!

Thanks to everyone who submitted films for the Video Masquerade at CC28!

For folks who could not attend the showings on May 7 at Costume-Con, I've just published a YouTube playlist of the four films that were presented in the film festival:

The show was very well received and we'll be doing it again next year for Costume-Con 29 in New Jersey.

(A special thanks to caliph o'clowns who persuaded me to revive the show after we'd given up on it!)

Andy and I are running this event again for Costume-Con 30; the films will be featured as part of the Saturday Night entertainment while the judges deliberate at the Science Fiction and Fantasy Masquerade.

This year's entry deadline is March 30, 2012.

Full details can be downloaded from the CC30 website: http://costumecon30.org/pdf/VideoMasquerade.pdf

Since we seem to be doing this regularly do you think we might be able to persuade the mods her to change the subject title for this topic? That'd be great!

I really, really, really, really wish I had time because I have several awesome ideas. I just don't think it will be possible to find time to do it.

BUUUUUUT... if you do really want some videos to show, I will have the staff video from this year's Kawa Kon that features several costumes. It's turning out to be a pretty awesome little video. It's just not something I'm making specifically for Costume-Con as it is being used to open the my convention this year.

We have happily included previously-shown pieces in past film fests. We aren't big enough yet to insist on exclusive display rights :-)

Note that this year the address for the VM is VideoMasq@CostumeCon30.com. Drop us a line!

Well, I got editing equipment, I got a DVD camcorder, I just need people. Unfortunately, that is the most difficult thing.

So because I had to finish it for my own convention this Friday, I have my entry done. I don't have time right now to submit it, but I will after my convention.

Well, we didn't get enough to have to worry about judging, but we do have a show (including the one from supergeekgirl).

I'd love to get a few more, so if you have something tucked away you'd like to share with the Costume-Con 30 audience, let me know! It doesn't have to be brand-new, just not shown at the CC Video Masquerade before.

If only I weren't always working on costuming projects and attending cons IN FREAKING COSTUME. I'm an editor, so I have access to the equipment to make loads of stuff. I just need to find some time to put the ideas which have been inspired in me into video form. :)
