View Full Version : Color to Boots - Any Ideas?

I just got my Sol Badguy costume in, and it fits well. Chalk one up for Cosplayhouse.com, but there's one tiny thing that didn't work out.

I probably should've told them this in the first place, but the shoe covers are too small to slip over any of my size 13 shoes. I think they're size 10 or 11 in best guessing.

Anyway, rather than email them and complain with AX just around the corner, I decided that it would be better to simply improvise. I have some boots that I bought a year ago, so they've been worn around and then some. I'm thinking of just taking a can of red spray paint and just dousing them.

Has anyone done this method, or have done something similar but differently? If so, I'd love to hear what others have to say. Thanks for reading, and quite possibly responding.

What are the boots made out of? Spraypaint probably won't work for most materials.

If you have time to grab some fabric, You could make your own bootcovers- you can look at the construction of the ones you already got and handstitch them (it's not a lot of sewing, just some fitting/darting).

As for the armor on top of his boots, you can stretch some fabric over a piece of curved plastic like wonderflex if you have some and stitch/pin it to the bootcovers.

Craft stores will also have the spray paint meant for vinyl, fabric, leather etc. It doesn't toughen up your boots.

Regular spray paint + boots = fail. I speak from experience. I think I even used the Fusion brand plastic spray paint.

They'll look fine at first, but as you wear the boots and your foot moves around, you'll crack the paint along the "creases" - like the top of your foot, the ankle, etc. In a few hours, they look awful.

I've had far better luck making bootcovers. :)

This particulate brand of floral spray paint I've seen work well with ankle boots.

I recommend if it'a a fake leather or plastic type surface I recommend sanding it with ultra fine sand paper to remove the finish coat before spray painting it.
