A friend and I are seeking out reproductions of uniforms from 17-1800's. Navy pieces can possibly work as well, and we're looking in the range of British, French, and American.

We've already looked over multiple steampunk sites, but we'd like to actually go more authentic and then make our own alterations and additions, rather than automatically buying everything already prepared.

Also, the redder the coat and the more buttons, the happier my best friend will be.

You might want to look for American Zouvairs(?) costumes from the Civil War. Some of the were red and outlandish.

You mean Zouaves?

If you look at that era a good source for info on patterns is: http://www.browncoats.com/index.php?ContentID=431e4b510641f
