View Full Version : Making earrings for non-pierced ears

I do not have pierced ears, but I would like to make San's earrings from Princess Mononoke (http://i650.photobucket.com/albums/uu225/rynthehylian/Cosplay%20-%20San/18660036.jpg).
What would be the best way to make these earrings for someone without pierced ears?

I would use a pair of magnetic earrings (http://www.starlitejewels.com/images/earrings/ear.jpg) as the base and make a rounded notch in the disc-shaped earring and secure the magnetic earrings inside.
This description probably makes very little sense, so I drew you a poor diagram (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v164/DarksideOmega/Cosplay/EarringDiagram.jpg) in paint to try and explain it better.
The rounded hole at the top is where your earlobe would sit, and the two red dots are the two pieces of the magnetic earring. The disc of the earring would need to be made out of something very light, so as not to put too much pressure on the earrings and your ear, but I think it might work. My cousin uses magnetic earrings when she performs on stage (level 8 ballet) and they're actually pretty strong.

As someone without pierced ears and has done earringed cosplays, I don't recommend magnetic or clip-on earrings as they invariably become painful in very short order. I recommend looping some wire along the back of your ears with the "earring" at the bottom. It's easily adjustable, and much more comfortable - plus with big earrings like San's, you'll want the extra support.

I used clip-ons that I altered so that they would not "pinch" (magnets can actually do some damage on the cellular level). As for the earrings themselves I used Model Magic to make the "disks". Prior to drying I made holes just large enough to allow the clip earrings to pass through so that they could hang naturally and shift with head movements. After having them dry I applied some high gloss spray paint to both the clips and the earrings and then combined them to achieve the final result.
Model Magic, when dried, is featherlight in weight so it should not harm the lobes of the ears- even for disks as large as the one she wears.
I made my San costume way back in middle school, and only could find one picture of it to post on cosplay.com, but if you want to see the result of my technique it's there on my profile.
Good luck! :)
