Hello ~

I'm working on a steampunk costume, and I'd like to incorporate a Victorian-style hat box into it. I bought one years ago at a thrift store that looks mostly like this:

The problem is that it's, well, old. The lining is in surprisingly excellent condition and I can polish up the clasps, but some of the exterior leather is worn away along the edges. I'm by no means schooled in antique restoration, so I'm open to any ideas. Thanks in advance!

You're probably going to have to remove the outside leather and replace it. You can check out your local leather store, and get some cheap replacement leather. While you're there, you can ask someone for advise on how to go about it. It should be something like this (http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-reupholster-a-recliner-seat/), except with a hat box :D

Oh, wow, thanks a lot! I figured I'd have to replace the leather, but I had no idea how to start. This is a huge help!
