View Full Version : Shenron Dragon Horns - Construction Help?

Well, I'm off to a bad start - Cosplay.com hates me, & I lost my whole post, so I'll briefly summarize what I need help with.

I'm working on a cosplay mask of Shenron (http://www.tmnttoys.com/reviews/dbz/dragons/1070.jpg) (the green dragon on the left), from DBZ.

I need help with the horn construction, as I need a light, durable, & CHEAP material.

I'm using the tutorial here (http://www.matrices.net/maskmaking.asp) for making the mask, which will be a cross between a traditional Chinese lion/dragon dance costume, & a furry-type form-fitting mask. The whole costume requires a few people under it, so the head has to be small to be in proportion.

In the past, I've used cardboard tubes from paper towels/toilet paper to make horns, then covered them in papier-mache - it was fragile & prone to cracking. Not good. The horns have to be large, & fairly resistant to bumping against things, because we'll probably be jumping & leaping around under the mask. I have a large quantity of Styrofoam & pink foamcore already.

In addition to the horns, I need suggestions on how to do Shenron's red eyes. I'm thinking transparent red plastic lenses, but I have no idea where to get those. Also, I want to hook up some LEDs inside the mask to make the eyes glow, so I'd appreciate any help with that.

Thanks in advance for any help with my cosplay query!

Quick update on this costume - I've carved foamcore horns, but they're a bit on the heavy side. Is there an effective way to hollow out the centers of the horns, without destroying it completely or starting over? I cut out several sheets of foam, glued them together, carved them, sanded, applied a layer of Liquitex modeling paste, & painted the horns.

I can't wait to see the finished product. That's so cool that you're making Shenron. ^-^
