haha, feels awkward being the first one to post here, but someone has to do it!

I FINALLY finished my skirt today. It's not perfect, but considering it's only the second thing I've ever sewn, I think it came out fairly well. It took me like 2 months, but I learned sooooo much, both in learning to work with the fabrics (fraying SUCKS), putting in zippers, and patterning, that I'm hopeful that the rest of the work will go quicker.

I'm doing the Merciless Gladiator's Regalia set (mage arena season 2): http://www.wowhead.com/itemset=710

Here's the skirt:
It looks a little funky on the dummy because my dummy doesn't quite match the shape of my rather large badonkadonk. The skirt looks a little bare because I've decided to attach the hanging thingies (for lack of a better term) onto the bodice portion, as opposed to hanging it off the skirt.

Where did you order those from? I've been trying to find awesome colored prescription lenses for a decent price. Most places have decent prices, but the second I want to see with them they charge more. If i get them from my optometrist they start at $30 for boring colors. Stuff like yours runs at like $60 and up :(

Waiting for my fur to dry before I take any full pictures of the pants. My fabric paint on my sash is also drying but here's how the sash looks with its first coat of Rub N Buff and the green gradient about halfway done:

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a388/kazamaceo/Costuming/beltfront.jpg (I now despise fabric paint)
Here's the fur!
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a388/kazamaceo/Costuming/furdiff.jpg (what I started with vs test piece)

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a388/kazamaceo/Costuming/fursash.jpg (how deliciously gross it looks)

Wish my phone didn't wash everything out like crazy. >< Probably gonna have to go over the big piece of fur with a another coat of wash.

And here's a horrible picture of what it all looks like together without anything attached yet!

I really need to invest in a full-length mirror... At least the cat came out recognizable (little squirt...).

I spy a helper mau in the back there!

Both my cats are helper maus. >< They will always hang out on the floor with me while I'm working and often try to "help" by sticking their noses/paws/tails in things, or rolling over and spilling a cup of watered down acrylic paint on my carpet.

Off topic, but I do love my kitties. <3 Hades loves the ladder:
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a388/kazamaceo/IMG_1039.jpg
And Vick got very cross that we wouldn't let him help assemble a desk so he plopped down on the floor and didn't budge, making him a great instruction guide table:

On topic, I'll be drafting my tattoo patterns today and then playing with my liquid latex! :>

Sorry for the crap quality, all i got is my cell phone for pics right now, but I figured I should share SOME sort of update so it looks like I'm actually making something. :P I finished my bracers today (BloodFang rogue). I didn't want to deal with making gloves so I opted for the bracers instead. My next piece is the chest...Got the thing patterned and cut out, just gotta tool some stuff and paint it. I feel thats gonna take awhile >.<

Eda those bracers look great!! Can't wait to see the chest. :D

I finished my first of the tattoos tonight and I am super excited to finish the rest, even though they're time-consuming as all hell. I decided to make stencils and lay them out on wax paper instead of just trying to paint them, which would've been damn near impossible or looked awful. The latex is absolutely wonderful for this project though, I love how it looks. Wish I had a blacklight to test out their glowiness!

Krys, the contacts and wig look great! The wig is seriously perfect

Edalyne, cool bracers :D Sorry if you already said this but how long did it take you to make them?

So we're doing the Acherus Knight's armor (the green starting armor) like this but for a girl (http://fc09.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2009/361/4/7/Death_Knight_ref_by_F8thLeSS_Priicher.jpg). I've sewn a skirt and top and made the shoulders, belt buckle and bracers. We're almost done with the armor pieces that go on the skirt and we're picking up paint today to paint all the armor pieces.

On my Lady Blaumeux costume I'm finally getting around to all the projects I thought were going to be really hard. They seemed super overwhelming to me, but now that I'm working on them they're not that bad. So now that I've realized that I'm working pretty fast :D

Awesome! Thats great to hear :D

It took me 3 days. Probably could have finished sooner, but I had to wait in between coats of paint and for the leather to dry when I had it wet for cutting the designs into it. So only a few hours really. Working with leather was very scary at first, but honestly, it's not that bad! I really enjoy working with it and I think it's easier than sewing :P

ok... about my costume. I am probly doing this one of the worst ways possible so I wanted some advice...

so I have this whole set of body armor made of paper mâché'd cardboard and I stapled silk on the insides so it is nicer to wear.. the way I was planning on covering it was with paper clay, but that would take a crapload of paper clay and a lot of work. (I have to do the body piece, upper arms, lower arms, upper legs, and lower legs). I like paper clay because of the smooth clear texture it puts on it, but that just seems like too much!

So I've finally got some progress pics to show of my Lady Blaumeux costume :)

Here's the overall reference pic: Lady Blaumeux (http://acm.jhu.edu/~cryect/NaxxPics/Lady_Blaumeux.jpg)

...and here's some of my progress so far! I put a reference picture with each one

Gloves (http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c348/suralcor/Costume/Gloves.jpg)
Shoulders (http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c348/suralcor/Costume/Shoulders.jpg)
Leg Plates (http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c348/suralcor/Costume/LegPlates.jpg)
Helmet (http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c348/suralcor/Costume/HelmetBlurry.jpg)
Laid out next to each other (http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c348/suralcor/Costume/Overall.jpg)

I've got about 75% of my chest piece done, 95% of my cloak, and only about 20% of the boots. Oh, and I'm almost done with the belt buckle, which will complete my belt.

After that... I pretty much just have to figure out how to attach everything together and make sure everything is sturdy.

Can't wait to see more of your progress shots, everyone! :)

Paper clay huh? I was betting on rolled craft foam. Very clean work, cant wait to see the whole thing in person!

Did you happen to take photos of the process? Would love for you to write up a "how to" on the process and guest publish on Alice and my blog.

It took (seemingly) all day, but the tail and corset facing has been pinned and cut from the final fabric. Thick, thick faux leather. It's lovely...but my fingers are threatening to fall off.

Thanks Edalyne!

I worked on my boots, got one of the greaves constructed and used clay to put finger bones on the heels! They still need to be weathered before they're all done. They're way too white right now

I also tried on my makeup and threw on the cheapy wig I got to wear when I don't have my helmet on, and I really like the effect. I'm afraid of contouring my face because I always end up just looking dirty :(

Shaylyn, contouring is really easy, you just need to practice with it :) I didn't know how to contour at all a few months ago but I need to do a bit of contouring on Essex's face and my own for our Kalecgos/Tyri costumes and after a bit of practice, it was easy. There are several good tutorials on the matter: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqCDhUsVwFw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHn3iKgB4Qo
Your makeup looks great though! I just found that contouring helps give a bit of dimension to the face :)

Nozze
09-19-2010, 02:34 AM
I was just about to post Petrilude's contouring tutorial. He's one of the absolute best make-up gurus out there on youtube.

As Alice said, it just takes some practice and finding the right shades. You'll want to decide if you want to do your make-up for the stage or for in person, since stage make-up will need to be a lot more dramatic to show up properly... but may be too harsh in person. Just experiment and play around. :)

Progress shot time!! OMG SO GLAD I'M DONE CARVING THE SHOULDERS. Just have to paperclay, paint and gem them. And make them light up. If I have time.

I used Orange Moose's normal Styrofoam method since southern california is sadly lacking in the pink stuff. All I have to say is holy crap, foam everywhere. I also posted up an overall progress shot that is slightly outdated.

Think this will link to my flickr account. It's brand new, so who knows?

Great tutorial! I played around with it a bit, I need to find the right colors!

Tonskie that is cool!! Where did you pick up that large piece of foam? Omg I hate that we can't find the pink stuff here in california. I guess no one expects to need that much insulation out here? :p

If you leave in/near LA and really want the pink stuff (Owens Corning), I finally found a place in Burbank that carries the blue version (Dow). They're almost exactly the same (25 PSI, etc.).

I bought some sheets for my costume this year. They have all the thicknesses and will sell you individual sheets, no problem. It's more expensive than the rest of the country o'course, since it's rare out here. If you can carve as well as Tonksie with Styrofoam, it's probably not worth buying this stuff. :) But the thinner you go, the cheaper it is. I think it was somewhere around $22 for 1" thick. 1/2" was... I want to say $18? My receipt is buried somewhere, but they'll give you the exact prices over the phone. :)

Anyway, it took me forever to find them, so here's the information in case anyone else is looking!

Foam Sales & Marketing
1005 W Isabel St
Burbank, CA 91506
http://www.foamsalesandmarketing.com/

(If I remember right, the reason you can't find it in regular stores out here is because it's illegal to use in buildings unless you get special permission. =/ So no one carries it. The lady at Foam Sales says they get a lot of prop- and set-master folks in who want to use it.)

Tonksie

I picked up the foam at Michaels. I got several different sizes ( 2 6" cubes and a 6" x 12" x 36" block) and glued them together. I really wish we had that pink stuff out here, it seems a lot less messy and easier to carve.

Looking good Tonksie! :D I really like the bottom part of ur skirt and the shoulders looks good. Hope you have time to make them light up! They would look really cool that way. If not, I'm sure the gems and stuff will still look good. :)

And yes! i tried finding the pink foam and gave up on like the 10th home depot/lowes. Oh well. Idk why pink foam is a pain to get in southern california.

You could always try the expanding foam I keep seeing in tutorials (I know Kamui uses it). I think it's pretty cheap per bottle, which would make it a perfect for experimenting, lol.

Everyone's stuff looks wonderful! I'm so jealous. My classes have been cutting into my costuming time like crazy. :( Doesn't help I'm in art school, which has been burning me out of doing anything creative that isn't homework. My wings and horns still aren't done and the hooves, which I was saving for last, probably wont get done at all. ><

I did, however, just get done sculpting my Skull of Gul'dan; hopefully the thin layer of paperclay dries tonight so I can paint it while my motivation is still fresh!

I can't help but wonder if I shouldn't load my truck up with pink foam and sell it like Crack out of my trunk at Blizzcon to all you poor deprived So-Cal cosplayers. :)

The expanding foam works great too, but shaping is a bit diffrent then with the pink foam. Electric turkey carving knifes work great on the stuff, just as an FYI and its not really as messy as the pink stuff. but you will need to coat it in a covering once you are done with shaping due to a much larger air bubbles in the material.

Think I may add a little more of a bump to the part between the nose and teeth but otherwise, I'm pretty happy with it so far. I've never sculpted anything that turned out well before, lol. Little sand and paint and I'll carry it around with me, regardless of whether my costume gets done or not. :D

Haha, Essex, I was pondering paying someone to mail me big blocks of the pink foam. Someone could make a killing running a mail order business for us deprived ones. The normal styrofoam will definitely have to be covered due to the texture, which adds a lot to the weight.

@Lala. WOAH that looks perfect! Amazing job sculpting! What kind of clay did you use?
As for the rest of your costume, just get done what you can and maybe modify some of the more complicated details to make things easier on you. I've had to do that a few times now, I had wanted to do the scales detail on my bodice, but at one point it was just came down to either having a perfectly accurate incomplete costume, or a slightly simplified completed costume. Your progress pics are looking awesome, so I really want you to finish so that I can see it!

Tyrigosa progress! Essex's mom actually did the sewing for this costume, since we're too busy with our Witchdoctor costumes to focus on making patterns from scratch and everything. It isn't quite done, the piece on the shoulder that's hanging down needs to be adjusted, trim needs to be sewn on the boots, and gold needs to be painted on the boots and bra part. Still, almost there! Yay! I was worried about the blue of the boots not matching the material of the dress since we couldn't find one that was an exact match, but I think it's looking good :)
Edit: Oh, and I know I don't look very excited in this picture but I was ecstatic! My photographer was just being silly :)

Thanks Reformed! I originally tried just white makeup but that didn't work out at all, so I went to the Costume Castle (in Lake Forest) and picked up Ben Nye Color Cakes makeup in "Death Flesh." I posted this a few days ago, but I guess it didn't go through since I'm technically a newbie on the forums? Phooey.

Anyway, http://www.foamsalesandmarketing.com/ !

For SoCal foam hunters, that's a place in Burbank. They have the blue (Dow) version, which is very, very similar to the pink (Owens Corning) version, and they'll sell you individual sheets. They're expensive, though. If you can carve regular Styrofoam as well as Tonksie can, I'm not sure it's worth it. :)

From what I gathered while searching for this stuff, it's illegal to use rigid insulation foam in buildings in California, which is why it's hard to find and expensive here. Dunno if that's true, but it's as good an explanation as any, I guess. I'm not affiliated with that company or anything. It just took me forever to find them, and they were nice, so I thought I'd share.

Finally! Small victory tonight! The tail is completely sewn, stuffed and attached to the lumbar belt. In the pic, I'm holding the welding rods that I used to hold the curl - those will be properly held in place under the corset. It moves so nicely! The fabric worked so well. YAAAAAY!!!

Krystle - Can I ask how heavy they are? Do you think you'd be able to do some kind of velcro attachment? I'm working on a papermache set... to heavy to velcro I think. I'm wondering if I should abandon my attempt. I would love to hear how you fix them when you work it out <3

Edit note- I have just gone out and bought several sheats of thick craft working Styrofoam (glued into a large block with liquidnails) Really light weight! I'm stoked.

Question - What's the best tool for carving styrofoam? Should I go with a hot knife or a small rotary grinder?

Tonksie
09-22-2010, 10:07 AM
I found when carving styrofoam that I had the best control with a paring knife. I know a lot of people like those electronic meat carvers and hot knifes though, they probably work a lot quicker. I tend to have shaky hands though, so I liked just shaving away bits and peices with a knife.

Winter Star: You may be in for a tough time. Liquid nails is great for putting stuff together but to best of my memories that shit is tough to cut. There are far better adhesive out there for this sort of thing that will cut at the same rate as the foam.

If you do have good success please let us know, I tend to avoid liquid nails and it would be nice to have a first hand account on it.

Tonksie: There are always faster ways, but what ever works for the person is the right method. I have made 12+ shoulder bases now and even with power tools its still a 10-15 hours of labor.
A good friend told me "Out of the 3; Speed, quality, or price, Pick 2 because the other one goes out the window." I choose quality and price normally......

As an update, I've totally ditched the mask idea, it just wasn't working out. Plus the whole reason I was doing it was so her eyes would be closed, but apparently nobody cares about that anymore as her model in game has open eyes. Thus, my need for makeup.

I wonder, can one put Ben Nye onto latex ears? Or would it rub off too easily or something?

I'll try to get some pics up by next week, all your guys' posts are giving me some great motivation to get off my ass.

They are super light weight. They are made out of a pink insulation foam sheet (not the itchy kind). Essex actually made the base. All i've done is added model magic, paint, and some felt on the inside. :P

As far as the best tool, i'm not really sure. I had been making a staff, that i'm probably going to abandon because it's coming out around 20 lbs because of all the clay. I had used a paring knife on the base, because I don't even own, let alone know how to use a hot knife. XD.

If you'd like, Essex has posted the entire process on how he made the base of my shoulders.

Part 1 can be found here:
http://tripleacosplay.com/2010/09/06/shoulder-armor-tutorial-part1/

And Part 2 can be found here:
http://tripleacosplay.com/2010/09/12/shoulder-armor-part-2/

I wonder, can one put Ben Nye onto latex ears? Or would it rub off too easily or something?

Ben Nye can definately be put onto latex ears. However, I would not recommend using the same method that you would use with the Kryolan Aquacolor. For the ears, just apply it directly. It's meant to be very densly pigmented. It's what we used in my stage makeup class, and we never used water with it. lol. We were able to put it onto prosthetics though. :)

I hope that helps! ^_^

Thanks Krystle - I have read and re read that tutorial now. It's brilliant. I also spoke to the girls at our local craftwares shop and they suggested a surgical/scalpel blade to carve the foam. They have one that is nearly 6cms long (about 2'') They reacon that should do the trick with carving the foam. I tried to get insulating foam, but our local hardwares don't sell it over the counter... so styrofoam it is.

Yay, thank you guys for the comments. <3 The gesso is drying atm and I'll get the painting done by Sunday, hopefully. I cheated and used a cheap styrofoam skull as a base and just sculpted Paperclay on the front and went over it with a coat of gesso.

@Shaylyn, thank you! :D
@Ladybug I cannot wait to see your costume done! That tail is seriously adorable.
@ Krystle and Alice, progress looks great! Ahhh, everything is coming together, looks great.
@Tonksie, yeah, I'm probably just going to end up scrapping the hooves so I can get the more important parts done. >< We'll see how long the wings take to make, as I haven't done anything past the basic frame for them yet... Still need to buy fabric and batting! Thank you. <3

So today, since I am home sick, I decided to still try to be productive and restarted my horns. The ones I was in the process of making were a wire frame + paperclay but looking at them now, they look way too small and not round enough. So I'm gonna try the cardboard/paper mache/mod podge route and actually make them proportionate to Illidan's in-game model:

Thanks for the tail comment. I lurve it. Things are finally coming together. I'm about 25% through the chest piece. It's just manual labor at this point, I've worked through the pattern once already...and it's coming together quickly (thank goodness). Corsets are serious business. LOL

Yeah mate you're right, the liquid nails was a pain in my rear end! I ended up carving the structure out with a sharp serrated knife and an extra sharp kitchen knife. However all that friction meant that the glued panels just came apart. I just taped as I went and worked on each level and have now paper mached each shoulder entirely to secure each level and also for extra strength in general.

I'm pretty happy with how they have turned out, however having said that, when I compare them with the actual 3D model... they look very differant. That's what you get when you dont restock the printers ink cartrage and you have to go on sketches and memory :p
I had to remove the bottom layer (the oval/cup shape that sits underneath the main structure of the shoulders) I found it restricted too much up and down arm movement :(

I used the large bear claws from Tandy. They're slightly smaller than the kodiac claws I think. To be honest, I didn't even think of the weapon policy. They're just made of plastic and they're not sharp, so it never even crossed my mind. Then again, I've never had a problem with the guards.

Casting gems for the shoulders. They seem really dark. Should I re-cast? They turned out rather tacky, too, and sanding leaves them all scuffy (even with 400 grit wet/dry). Any pointers?

I checked out the link and even saw that they have actual night elf-inspired ears, too! I have used the Easy'Cast to pretty good success. Humidity has never been an issue, I have made parts from 90% in Mobile Alabama on the gulf coast in summer down to 8% humidity in Norther California in the middle of summer. If you get the mix right then nothing on this earth will stop that stuff from setting up.

Molds are what ever you can use, but there are lots of generic gem shapes out on the marketplace for medium to small size gems.

How heavy are we talking? A wire frame would be quite painful after a few hours of wear.
I used the headband from a construction helmet for Alice's mask. Because its easy to adjust it will fit any head and is pretty comfortable to wear for extended periods.

Depending on where the weight is on them will change how you should attach them. Is it down low or does the horn want to fall backwards when you hold them on your head?

Resin question summary attack:

I have the exact tutorial I sourced for my gems (which links to materials) posted in the Costume Resource Compendium.

You can make positives from simple Sculpey, make a mold with RTV silicone, and cast anything with assorted resins (polyester, in my case).

Although the tutorial mentions that heat must be applied to silicone molds to make polyester resin cure, I'm not having any issues. They pop out a little tacky, but it's not like they're falling apart or failing to gel firmly.

LEDs work just fine. Although some people go nuts with making their own strands of lights, I think that making my own circuits would be a bad choice should some of the soldering fail at con while wearing the costume. With these, I can just toss a bad light and swap in a good one. I use independent LEDs ranging from the plain party lights they sell at JoAnn's/Michaels to waterproof colored LEDs with on-off switches from the internets. It's easy enough to attach them with velcro.

EDIT:
I should note that although the RTV silicone is pricey, it is completely WORTH IT if you want a reusable mold. Many of those instant mold kits will break apart or begin to crumble after a use or two. Be sure to fully research your materials before going for whatever you just happen to find. themoreyouknow.jpg

Gems look neat Ayabi!!

Wow, Essex and Alice, I thought I was going to feel naked. Good luck. x_x lol Looking great so far though. :D

Also, I will second the ears that Reformed posted - I wore a pair of those with my LBD last year and they were great. Look right, could still hear well out of them, and they're thin enough that they bounce like elf ears do.

Unfortunately my forehead is going to be showing so headband that wrap around the head aren't gonna work for my horns. >< I decided on trying a vertical headband and attaching a support that wraps around the base of my skull in the back since they tip forward with weight. I am going to be so cranky by the time Friday is over, lol.

Super excited, made the pattern for my wings today and I think they're gonna be easier than I kept worrying about. Will be putting stuff together on Sunday! Also sculpted the spiky detailing on the horns, gonna add a few more layers of Mod Podge, latex, and paint em. Then I'll just have to worry about my wig (eek) and hooves!

Once I get the cloak lined and runed, and get the corset I'm attaching to the inside of the dress (for support purposes) I'll be posting up sneak peek shots of my WC3!Jaina! Nothing comprehensive, mind you- hell, I'm not planning on posting up whole shots of any part of the cosplay- but enough to give you an idea of what all that cloth got put together to look like! Then, after I'm finished... it off to help the hubby finish his Prince Arthas!

LOVE LOVE LOVE IT! The armgaurds and the leg gaurds are sensational!
You've made me want to buy some leather and start experimenting with it!

My husband has finally picked his costume... Human Pally in feild marshals aegis -
http://i.thottbot.com/ss/o/5373.jpg
He's not making it easy for me. Why couldn't he go as a lvl 1?!? :p
I don't even know where to begin!!! I think I will cheat and give him a big old Alli tabard to cover all the torso stuff. Then he wants the long plaited wig with silver cuffs. So I really just need to do shoulders (thinking carved foam and paperclay) Then the gloves, leg gaurds and boots .... in maybe leather? At least I have til August next year to learn all the skills ... even then I'm sure I'll only just get them finished at the last minute
I don't know - any suggestions guys?

Progress! I figure I can show these now, as its less than 2 weeks out, and the likeliness of someone ganking my idea is minimal. (Not that I think anyone here will, because I don't, but... well, most of you know my story from last year.)

http://www.cosplay.com/photo/2735044/ Jaina's dress sleeve! The chiffon is a lot more translucent than the photo lets on.

http://www.cosplay.com/photo/2735045/ Jaina's Cloak, part 2. Going to work on the runes tomorrow, after I go out and get the remaining stuff I require for my staff.

http://www.cosplay.com/photo/2735046/ And, finally, Jaina's dress panel... thing. I dunno what to call it. :) Its going to go under the leather belt (with pouch, for mah stuff) that I'll be wearing.

BTW... gold material is a pain in the butt.

Honestly, that's just the way the wig came, though I do tend to brush up in the front, to help with the lift, and then down along the sides with a wig brush, if that helps.

And thank you! =D When I saw the wig, I knew it was perfect.

Also- cloak is DONE! No pics of this, though, as its my 'signature piece' for BlizzCon! Now, all I have to do is build the staff, and I'm finished. -squee-

I haven't really updated here with progress pics, but here i go!

I am about 85% complete with my costume (a Blood Elf like the gold Silvermoon statutes, with Vestments of the Shifting Sands in red) and I've started embellishing!

*Link Photo Dump (more or less)*

Here is the embellishing to the chest (one side), with the embroidery (scroll) and the leather leafing + Metal leaf accents.
http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/lesliecrystal/Designs/IMG00442.jpg

And this is the bottom part of the center of the robe showing (again) my leather leafing with metal leaf accents (Red background is not there. It is from skirt folded behind)
http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/lesliecrystal/Designs/IMG00441.jpg

And these are the side closures for the robe with (you guessed it!) more leather leafing and metal accents.
http://i981.photobucket.com/albums/ae299/lesliecrystal/Designs/IMG00444.jpg

I have been better about posting progress pics on my blog (http://www.lesliecrystal.com/tagged/Cosplay), but I needed to stop being lazy and post them here.

Now all I need is to figure out what shoes with heel I can wear and not -die- in, so that I can get the skirt length right and hem it + add the gold trim.

PS. Can't wait to see you ALLLLLLL.

EDIT: PSS. Don't mind the stupid (C) crap on my pics. I only put that in my pict0rz since my blog is on tumblr and I want it show on tumblr reposts. :-D

I welcome ANY suggestions, but I'm pretty pleased!
Your wig is beautiful and makeup looks fantastic! I love the lipcolor, what did you use? I've been looking all over for some lip color that is blueish and am having a hard time finding any.

Actually, I meant to reply to Nozze on this too - all of the color on my face is actually eyeshadow (lips included.)

For the lips, here's what I did:

Lip Balm - let sit for a few minutes - rub with washcloth to exfoliate.
When I did my regular makeup, I went over my lips too (to blank them out)
Reapply lip balm.
Line lips with Jessie's girl (cheap drugstore brand) kohl style eyeliner in "Blue Steel"
Fill with Prestige Cosmetics Let Loose Shadow Dust in "Thrill"

Really, any highly pigmented loose or mineral eyeshadow will work.

ETA - I just checked in the mirror and in the almost 6 hours I've had this on, I haven't managed to eat/lick off the lip color...which basically means this is WAY better than any lipstick I've ever used LOL

So a horrendous discovery was made tonight of all nights. You know that purple color changing krazy glue with the brush cap? Apparently it like, has a half-life or something that has expired, I swear. I just bought a new bottle yesterday at Jo-anns, and it simply does not stick at all. So I dug around my boxes of sewing crap to see if I had any left in my old bottles. The one bottle I found that DIDN'T have the cap glued shut made me all excited, until I used it and found it ALSO did not stick.

How odd is that?

So I had to buy some other brand without a brush because that was all I could find at midnight =( Wish me luck.

edit: Neither of the other glues I bought stick to craft foam at ALL. Oh god.

SO WEIRD. I was using the SAME krazy glue. I just bought some today as well and the crap would NOT STICK TO ANYTHING BUT MY FINGERS. I found some leather cement and used to stick some of my non-leather stuff together lol. Idk how well it will hold non-leather stuff, so I need to go buy some crazy glue that works. Looking at the crap it says "Craft strength." My old bottle didn't say that (at least I dont think it did). So I'm thinking the "craft" one just sucks. /shrug

Edit: Read your edit. Oh no! I hope you find something that works!!! Can your stuff to be glued wait till tomorrow? I'm sure you can find something that will for sure work at like Home Depot...

Maryssa
10-21-2010, 03:26 AM
Yeah I looked at the whole glue section at home depot, that's where I got the other 2 glues that didn't work. They guy even said the gorilla glue version would work better than krazy glue! And home depot does not even carry the krazy glue brand anymore.

I think craft foam will only specifically stick to krazy glue, I dunno.

OK going to try once more at a CVS. The NON-colored glue is on their website, so hopefully they have it.

edit again: OMG THEY HAD IT, I BOUGHT 3 BOTTLES JUST BECAUSE I WAS SO HAPPY.

edit: Neither of the other glues I bought stick to craft foam at ALL. Oh god.

I like to use E6000 and Gorilla Glue for most of my gluing. Gorilla glue is awesome, just make sure to use clamps with it as it expands and makes everything bumpy and bad if you don't hold it down tight. I actually like to use clamps in important spots, then use paper clips and paper clamps in the middle areas just to make sure they don't bubble up.

Thank you, hon. I enjoyed our talk backstage :3

Unfortunately, I do not plan to compete in the contest again. This has nothing to do with butthurt or dramu, but it has everything to do with shifting focus to doing what is best for my work. More commissions, more packable/easily worn designs for events, and much less entire year of work costumes for me. Good luck to everyone else in the future.

Sorry for double reply but I can't edit on this phone.

The Demon Hunter was a Playboy model hired to wear a costume commissioned by Blizzard for several thousand dollars. I hope you all got a good look at the craft foam and all the horrible seams all over it. Lol. Any of you could have commissioned something better. GG Blizz.

Meh, looks better than 99% of what one normally would see of cosplayers. Plus it looks good in pics, so. I don't think it looks bad. At all.

No, really. I'm not one to bash craft foam for armor, but this thing was all sorts of ragged. Looking good in pictures != looking good overall. The thing probably won't be wearable after another event or two unless they have those wide seams reinforced from under the armor. I'm curious to find out who they hired to make it.

Craft foam: Material of choice for commissions in the $3-5000 range, I guess. I'm learning a lot from you, Blizzard!

Yeah, we heard what was up before the con so I wanted to get a good look at this costume up close. Obvious foam is obvious. It doesn't look like they even tried to seal it. But eh, if Blizzard wants that sort of quality representing them, whatevs. It photographs well, sure, but the craftsmanship is surprising. I'm not even being snarky over here. It was lower quality finishing than the red and gold belf sets (also made of layered craft foam). Maybe it was a rushed job but we heard about this months ago, so the person who produced it had ample time to at least plan things out.

I did a little blog post about progress here (http://littlebugbigworld.wordpress.com/2011/02/02/cosplay-so-much-progress-so-little-time/).

I made the mistake of going through the item sets on the model viewer the other day and have about 20 sets I want to do. I'm still going full speed ahead on the druid T9, but I wouldn't be surprised if I start a cloth set (Absolution anyone? there are a couple of others too) and then decide which to wear to BC LOL

Your progress looks great! As to the leather you mentioned at the very bottom of that post.. it didn't happen to be the Tandy in Fountain Valley, was it? Because I may have snagged that piece. If you can, I suggest ordering it on their website or calling them about it. They can usually find a piece at another store and ship it to the one closer to you. The piece of leather I got is amazing, so if you can get one, I recommend it.

I've done that too! So glad I don't use model viewer anymore lol

Update time:

I've finally saved up and made my leather purchase. I ended up with two pieces; one a deep hunter green for pants, and one a gold for linings and trims. Plus all the other supplies I needed like cord, leather needles, mallet, etc. So that puts my behind for my ring order, again.

Meanwhile, I've just prepared some sharpie dye for my wig. I'm trying to darken it up a little, and the goal will be a ponytail like her in game model. The long braid actually weighed a fair amount and kept getting caught on my wings and tail, so the pony tail will not only match better, it will be more comfortable.

Thanks!! I'm having a lot of fun with this set as a whole. I'm having to work really hard to keep myself focused on specific pieces, because I want to work on all of it, all at once LOL!

As for the leather - I was at the Tandy in Spokane. The leather I found was special order, but was apparently discontinued. It was a full grain cow hide, non-shiny, in a really pretty green called Ivies. They didn't have any in any of the warehouses, and the thought of calling all the stores was daunting lol (especially since that particular leather didn't have the -color codes like most do)! I ended up finding a deer skin in the same color (also special order) so I'll be picking that up. It's thinner leather, but it's the only other thing that came in the color/finish that I wanted.

I also bought a bunch of tools while I was there - so I can start pounding designs into my panels! :D

I can't wait to see what everyone's up to!

This weekend I took the plunge and started on my costume for Blizzcon 2011, I decided to start with the weapon since I'm not sure how I'm going to create some of the trickier parts of the costume yet.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-CsHkVZZjCHo/Te2sP_ATfTI/AAAAAAAACgw/0HfJyono-XQ/s640/Shalamayne001.JPG

In the past I have used wood for my weapon props, but as Blizzcon restricts the materials that can be used, I figure I'll give foam a try. There are some great foam based weapon tutorials and a wood weapon this size would be a pain to carry around all day.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-cEmMd_1JnmE/Te2sQHzy4II/AAAAAAAACg0/CduAocDnhOA/s640/Shalamayne002.JPG

I haven't worked out how to do the glowing orb in the blade yet, so expect more questions to follow. :)

For anyone not on my facebook - I finally finished the back panel!!! When I planned out this piece, I underestimated the engineering it would take to get it all put together, so instead of being done 2 weekends ago, I managed to finish it this weekend. Not that bad, considering I usually only manage cosplay work once a week.

Anyway, I'm super super happy with it. The weather needs to cooperate long enough for me to cast the gems for the front and back panel. (We haven't managed two consecutive days above 68.) ><

Progress continues (albeit slowly) on Shalamayne, for my Blizzcon 2011 costume. It took me a while to figure out how I could do the tech for the sword. I'm going to use clear acrylic rods to hold the peaces of the blade that aren't physically attached. I'm using LEDs to illuminate the sphere of light in the sword as well as two gems in the hilt (not pictured) and run the wires through the pvc handle to the battery and on-switch concealed in the pommel.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-dVjr2KLK-MU/Thu9oZ8dDQI/AAAAAAAACiA/f2lc_PNx6FE/s640/Shalamayne003.JPG

Thanks! Last few days I've been testing glue, trying to find stuff that will let me glue Wood and PVC to Styrofoam. I settled on Elmer's Ultimate, the hold is rock solid and it doesn't dissolve the foam, however it foams up when it cures, so I need to be careful not to use to much.

I want to use pink foam for the shoulders as well, but I was having a difficult time imagining how I was going to sculpt them. So I used the WoW Model Viewer, Google Sketchup and Pepakura to create life size papercraft of the two shoulder pieces.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Ihrm4JFJcd4/TimYeeaFMxI/AAAAAAAAClw/QBa8nRLEw4k/s400/PapercraftShoulders.jpg

I scaled the lion head a bit to large (about 30% over) so I dropped the size for the avian head down and it looks spot on. I'm hoping I can use these to help me create the corresponding foam versions. We'll see...

I got to ask Kagato, why would you "re-sculpt" the full size pepakura models out of foam?? whats wrong with them as they stand? The detail x-fer to foam is never as sharp as the model. You could fully saturate these with fiberglass resin and foam fill the back to give your sculpt-able area to fit to your shoulder.

Just wanted to say something because it seamed like you were re-inventing the wheel.

Essex, funny you should ask that. :)

As I was assembling the model I started thinking that it was too bad I couldn't just use it. I know that just because I started with the idea of using foam doesn't mean I am stuck with that.

I've never worked with fiberglass resin and I'm a little intimidated, but I'm seriously considering giving it a try.

well look around your work area, do you have a well ventilated area? ie: a garage or patio?
Do you have a supplier of fiberglass resin and matting? for most parts of the civilized world if you are near a body shop or auto repair, then there is a supplier in the area.

There should be nothing scary about the stuff, a few simple steps and no matter how hard you screw up you will be fine and can try again.

make sure you have a "OV" rated respirator and do some test batches to make sure you have the mix of resin to catalyst. Some people will tell you to eye ball this part because its is true that you cant really add to much, but i like to have the predictability in my work and know when the resin will begin to set and cure.

I will toss up a "how to fiberglass" in a day or two on my blog because I have seen so many people who are interested in this but still worry about how to.

I've been reading how the Halo armor creators fiberglass their pepakura based armor. I'm starting to think this just might work, I look forward to your post Essex.

And I have a good place for fiberglassing, so that won't be a problem.

Kagato, that looks fantastic! Both the sword and the shoulders are coming along so well! I have a question- What's Pepakura?

Kagato

Thanks Dbchan.

Pepakura is a program for the PC for creating papercraft models. You can import a 3D model from a video game and create a paper model of it. I first learned about its use for costuming when reading up on Halo armor creators.

Today I was quite productive. I glued both gloves together, and completely finished stitching the right one. I have terrible light in my house so I won't be able to get any good pictures of the finished one until tomorrow or Tuesday, but here's this for now :)

I think I'll have time to try fiberglass on the shoulder pieces this weekend. I don't want to spam this list with to many progress updates, but I'll let everyone know how it goes. :)

I am about a day away from put up a "Pepakura fiberglass tutorial". I picked a simple Halo helm for the tutorial, but it should give a pretty good idea on what your doing. I will try to spend time more on set up and use of the fiberglass resin, then the method due to the fact that there are lots of "how to fiberglass" tutorials all over the place.

Side note to Kagato: how is your pepakura constructed? If you used tape of any sort, you will want to glue your tabs instead. Tape dissolves when the polyester resin is applied to it and your piece will fall apart before it has time to cure. (no idea about Epoxy resins however)

Hey Essex. I'm looking forward to that tutorial. :)

I assembled the papercraft using hot glue, got a few singed fingers but it sets real fast.

Progress pics! I can't remember the last time I posted here - but I just posted pictures of the mostly complete T9 druid hood on my FB page! For those of you who aren't there, here's a couple of shots:

Hood 1 (http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6136/6003712023_49420ceffb_z.jpg)
Hood 2 (http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6012/6004255772_3f65381cc6_z.jpg)

I had to do some repair work on the corset (it got laid down on an oiled piece of leather and 5 of the 8 pieces had to be replaced ::headdesk:: But, I should be able to get it put back together this week and then I'll start on the edging. Woot! I'm starting to feel better about my costume now, so I need to get started on Noz, now that I have all the leather we need.

Thanks Essex, I noticed on some of the other Halo armor tutorials that they usually put a coat of fiberglass cloth or mat on the underside. Do you find that unnecessary?

He was going to do that last night but ran out of time since it was pretty late. He'll likely do that in the finishing tutorial, the fiberglass mat will definitely reinforce it a lot.

Okay cool. Do you worry about the brand of polyester resin?

@Kagato I use tap plastics in-house brand. i haven't seen a very large difference other then price. its all the same stuff for the most part but some will have a bit of a difference when it comes to cure time vs catalyst amount.

My advice is to pick one and go with it. as with all things quantity is a huge factor on price. 1 gallon of the stuff i use is 42 bucks, and a 5 gallon goes for 152.... that a 40% savings in price.

Put the gloves on hold for now, as I need to finish the bottoms first. Yesterday I did most of the tail. Took about 7 hours to weave the scales for the upper tail portion. Then about 4 more to make the skeleton, wrap it, and fully attach it to the bottoms. All that's left is the gold leather underside of the tail, and a belt to hold it all up.

I got a lot of work done this weekend, embarked on my first use of fiberglass resin thanks to Essex's advice.

Last week I completed assembly of the the sword: Shalamayne Assembled (https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/au9rGi9W_5PqcVkiRR9qf7fj9wHDMIvRzMmEIjwARmI?feat=d irectlink)

Primed with black gesso, sanded and primed again: Shalamayne Primed (https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/HcGvCTsgzvJKHj4J3MIoLLfj9wHDMIvRzMmEIjwARmI?feat=d irectlink)

And finally, the avian shoulder piece with resin on the outside: Avian resin coated (https://picasaweb.google.com/118188928455691569140/VariousPosts?authkey=Gv1sRgCLWkzp-VnrejSw&feat=directlink#5641097089094751442) (on the left you can see I ambitiously mixed way to much resin for the first coat, there is a cup with about 3oz of hardened resin in it. ^_^)

Up next; I need to finish assembling a properly scaled lion shoulder piece, then resin that. The sword needs a few more coats of primer, fortunately, most Warcraft items show some wear and tear in the design, so I don't think the sword needs to be perfect to look authentic.

Then I move on to fiber glassing the inside of the shoulder pieces.

I'm not sure if it is obvious from the pieces I'm working on, but the goal is to have this costume for King Varian Wrynn ready for Blizzcon 2011. :)

I got the belt attached, but the tail is too heavy for the strength of the belt I used. So I'm back to the gloves for now while I decide how to fix the belt problem. I got to the wrist (a little more than what's in the pic) and some of the scales began to undo. I'll need to either go back and redo the ones that are coming untied and put a little glue on all of the ties, or I'll have to undo all of them and sew them on a strand instead of individually. Also yesterday I did a makeup test. The tattoos are a little uneven, and I'm planning on making eye brows out of wig hair, but overall I like how it came out.

Is anyone else starting to freak out a little? I'm getting worried that I won't finish, and I'm already trying to find places I can substitute (like buying leggings and dying them green vs making leather pants).

Looks great though! I really like the makeup; did you freehand the tats or are you stenciling?

Commencing freakout here as well. Made a list of things I have left to do and, yeah, I cringed a little bit. Trying to get as much done as possible in the next 2 weeks before classes start up again.

I did the tats freehand. I'm not really that good with makeup, since I almost never wear it and I thought stenciling would be out of my league. Thank goodness I have a steady hand!

My school starts next Monday, so I'm working overtime trying to finish the gloves and the bottoms at least. That will give me a wearable costume haha

freaking out is happening to me, too. Having a day 2 costume sounded great until about two days ago. My classes have already started so i'm trying to get as much done as possible before homework starts rolling in. but on the plus side, I discovered there's a Tandy here!

The scale work you've done looks very impressive RT.

I'm starting to stress a little myself, the thought of "Oh, I have two months to get this done." doesn't work anymore...

I finished fiberglass on the inside of the shoulder pieces. I plan to put one more coat of resin on the outside, then after that cures sand it down and prime it. I am going to wait a week or so for the inside resin to cure before I fill them with expandable foam, then I can shape that to fit my shoulders.

I've finally started the LEDs.... Here's the finished product for the front belt piece. I'm happy with it. It has the molten look I was going for. ^^

And one showing the finished product, and the one for the back without the covering...

It's hard to tell from teh pictures, but when I move the reflectivity on the undersides causes the piece to look like it actually has moving bits in it. ^^

Wet sanded the outside surface of the avian shoulder to get rid of the obvious drips I let build up. Because the resin is nearly clear, I decided to put on a quick coat of gesso to see what sort of surface I have to work with. Sadly, details in flat black don't show up all that well in the photo.

And yes, I too am starting to freak out more than a little... I have fallen behind and am pushing into overdrive to finish on my original deadline at the end of September *-*

Anyways, here's some complied progress shots of Fem Nozdormu so far. A lot are older and have had more work on them since. Scale work in particular (which got really popular this year lol, Ring Lords made bank this summer haha!)
