Fees: Entry is free, Cosplay is 800 yen.

What to expect:
*you should expect to stand in line for for 1-3 hours if you arrive before noon.
*Comiket is a bad place for casual touring or bringing children... it's one of the most crowded convention settings in the world and pornographic material is displayed openly in some of the event halls.
*If you want goods/books from famous makers, plan to line up for them early in the day or they will almost certainly be sold out when you get around to it.

The 2010 winter catalog urges attendees to check the weather forecast for rain and wear rain-gear if necessary. Thermal underwear, heat-tech and tights/leggings are all also suggested. Please be considerate of the health of others: if you are running a fever on the day of the event, don't attend and if you are recovering from a cold, please wear a flu mask.

Banned Items:

-Weapons and/or anything resembling any kind of weapon.
-Long props (anything over 30cm/1 foot long)
-Accessories with pointed edges.
-Projectiles/throwables (balls, frisbees, bows and arrows, etc)
-Bicycles, unicycles, skate-boards, rollerskates, etc. (even carried)
-Flammable items.
-Alcoholic beverages
-Pets
-Musical instruments, boom boxes, portable radios with speakers

Please be extremely careful about bringing gifts to your favorite doujinshi circle. While the sentiment is appreciated, handmade snacks like cookies and cakes, items which are heavy or breakable and large gifts can cause more trouble for the circles than enjoyment. Please do not bring these gifts to the event. If you want to share your encouragement, a kind word or a card is more appropriate.

Additional Rules:

-"DO NOT sit down or place luggage, books, drinks, etc. near firefighting equipment or emergency exits. These areas are demarcated by red tape on the floor.Furthermore, do not leave baggage unattended any-where within the premises."
-Use public transportation, there is no parking available.
-Photos may only be taken in the photo-area. Cosplayers should not be photographed in the regular hall. Always get permission from the cosplayer before taking their picture (and ideally, before posting it online).
-"You may only change at the designated dressing/changing rooms. If you wish to cosplay, you must register at the dressing room. (The dressing room is located at Conference Tower.) Registration will cost JPY800. Please be aware that cosplay and masquerading have yet to be widely accepted in mainstream Japanese society. Do not come to or leave the event wearing a costume."
-Do not engage in any public theatrical performances, live shows, demonstrations, or protest rallies.

Please read the rules for all guests here (http://www.cosplay.com/showpost.php?p=3727390&postcount=37) in full.
Cosplayers and photographers should read this set (http://www.cosplay.com/showpost.php?p=3729025&postcount=1) as well.

Things to Bring:
-warm clothing (the wind can be bitter)
-kairos (pocket warmers)
-a collapseable umbrella if it's raining
-namecards (if you want to cosplay/photograph cosplayers for a website)
-small bills and coins (if you want to buy doujinshi ~ most books are between 100-800 yen, most vendors can not make change from large bills)
-if you are a fan of Japanese PC game goods, you may want to bring a large sum of money to drop on the goods packages on sale in the showcase room upstairs. They aren't cheap ~ but they're event exclusive and come in large, colorful bags which can, themselves, become collectors' items. (These packages run between 3,000-12,000 yen on average.) Some non-game companies also have booths ~ EXIT TUNES, K-BOOKS, Mandarake, Kotobukiya, etc.

Though there are some points where I think you failed to catch from the official catalog, it is mostly a good post.

I have some opinions I want to share with you, but at the same time, I do not like to interfere a certain group of people forming their own culture and custom.

I wish all of you here enjoy the event.

Unfortunately, I will likely not be in the country then. Such a shame because it would be nice to cosplay when it's actually kind of comfortable to have so many bodies around. If I win the lottery, I'll bust out a new costume there.

As far as corrections to the info goes, I don't think Kira is saying PC games are the ONLY attraction, but IF you are interested, you need to bring a lot more money than usual. I think it goes without saying that anyone going to Comiket knows there are comics/small goods, but not everyone may realize that some items may be much more expensive than the usual 200-1000 yen price point.

And for namecards, certainly they are not necessary, but since they are not common in other countries, I think the mention of them here is appreciated to help foreigners remember and maybe try out making their own. I didn't have mine ready for Summer Comiket, and I wish I did. Also, this is for cosplayers, right? Do web authors and journalists come to this site? If they did, I think they really should have a card to give to people whose photo they want to post online.

Still, please post more info here! What is the IC card? Can you save money on the trip to and from Tokyo Big Site? That would be great

I don't know if it has ever been mentioned, but for making your own namecards, GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a fantastic freeware version of Photoshop, that can do virtually everything Photoshop does. I recently made my own with GIMP because I don't have the $1000 or whatever it is for Photoshop, and they turned out great.

Gasei ~ lighten up, man. I do not hate you. I find the unecessary tension between us uncomfortable. I'm trying to chock it up to a language gap, but I do wish you'd be a bit more gentle with me. I've never claimed to be an expert on all things Japanese ~ I'm just trying to help. And as far as I know, you've never PM'ed me...

That said, this is a general information post for cosplayers (most of them tourists) sharing general information about the event in English ~ not a thesis on Comiket. This is pasted more or less verbatim from the Summer Comiket event post with a few tweaks for winter. If you have something to add or refute, please do it openly. I have no information about IC cards. Why don't you post some? If you do, I'll include it in the opening post.

That said I'm inclined to disagree on the namecards. Everything on the list is optional, of course. But if you want to take photos and use them online or track down photos of yourself and the people you've met after events... they're one of the more important items you can have with you. Otherwise there is no way to give credit where credit is due or to contact those you've taken photos with for their permission to post. Not to mention, you'll lose the opportunity to get in touch later with the people you've met.

As for the kigyou booths ~ the main industry/goods presense seems to me to be PC game makers ~ LEAF, ORBIT, NITRO+, aquaplus, etc. or chain stores and figure companies peddling related PC game goods. Yes, other companies also open booths, but most foreigners will expect mainstream anime goods from a "dealers room". Not the pornogame-goods explosion that happens upstairs. In any case, I've updated it to be more inclusive.

As someone who has some experience attending both US and Japanese conventions, Kira makes a very good point. The dealers' room one experiences at an American convention is a bonanza of goods -- props, DVDs, CDs, figures, imported goods, plushies, pins, etc etc, all from a wide range of anime series. If anything, PC game products are a little rare (at at least they were at the last US convention I attended several years ago). Many people take a couple of hours to wander slowly through the US dealers' rooms to enjoy looking around. Most goods don't cost more than 3,500 yen ($40) there.

By contrast, the Japanese version is very different. Doujinshi are alloted their own halls. Some bits and bobbles are sold but not many. The upstairs dealers' room carries primarily PC game products, although there are a couple of other companies there. They sell a lot of sets which run 5,000 - 10,000 yen ($60 - 110). The room is very crowded and it's usually impossible (especially on the first day) to just browse. People rush to their booth of choice to buy the goods they want, and many things sell out quickly.

I enjoy both styles of conventions. Neither is bad, but they are very different. This includes attitudes towards cosplay and taking pictures, which I believe is why Kira stresses the thing about name cards. Actually, I've heard similar advice from other sources, both in regards to cosplay and something that may be handy to have in Japan in general. Certainly, they are not needed, especially if you are a casual cosplayer. But from my experience, they are nice to have if you can afford to take the time and effort to make them, and they're handy for making friends with the Japanese cosplayers.

In any case, I'm quite grateful for members of this community who are willing to translate and share information about the Japanese fandom and conventions, that perhaps not everyone else has the access to, or perhaps the skill to read it in full.

Thank you very much for this information kiratsukai! This is exactly what I was looking for. I'm going to Japan and Comiket for the first time in December and am really looking forward to cosplaying there. I hope I see you there! I'm going to cosplay America and Prussia from APH, though probably not until the second/third days since I'd like to get use to things on the first. As a side question, I know you can only be photographed in a certain area but it's alright to walk around in the halls in your cosplay right? Or is this not a good idea/not allowed.

I totally missed this. Sorry.

But yes, it's completely fine to wander the event halls in costume. Just don't leave the building (except into the cosplay areas or to stand in designated lines) in costume.

Well my cosplay line up is pretty much set in stone not sure what days I will be doing what but it looks like:

Chesire cat
Meatel (white version, requested by a friend to do this with her for one day)
Meirin (kuroshitsuji, this is really iffy because I barrowed this costume so my friend may want it back before then)

Cheers!

How goes progress all?

Are we going to try to have a meetup again or just drink wine in costume at Rebecca's house and play with her cats? :P

CelestialShadow

progress is....well its coming and going lol. I had to give back the meyrin costume so thats out of the picture but I do have my husbands sebastian costume to fall back on. I dont know though, the black butler plan for myself might not happen =(

on the are you alice note though what characters are spoken for so far??????? My husband is free on saturday to cosplay for sure (he always has that day off) so I may force him to join us, I personally think he would make an awesome door mouse plus that kind of outfit he can just wear to the convention and not change. I am planning to just wear my chesire cat outfit to the event since its so quasi fashion passable and i will just put my ears on when we get there =P

So if the kuroshitsuji thing falls through on my end i will throw to gether a sakura taisen imperial uniform to fill the slot. been wanting to make one of those since forever..

well its off to daiso to get more sewing notions for the commissions....woooshhhhhhhhhhhhh.

kiratsukai

on the are you alice note though what characters are spoken for so far???????

No one else has gotten back to us about it, so I suppose all of them :P White Rabbit and Maryanne aside.

As for Kuroshitsuji ~ we can get by either way... though I'm still fighting the partial blindness issue. Sebastian would be fun, for sure, but I suspect I can cheat death by layering contacts too.

I'm actually totally done with everything I can currently be done with O-o So if anyone needs something stupid and simple made or done -- I have free hands.

Also ~ if anyone is thinking of going to Comiket but doesn't have a costume or is coming from overseas and doesn't want to bring one with them: we've got two closets full of M and L costumes that aren't being worn and can't be sold until the international mail-ban lifts. Please ask about borrowing one. Provided you don't destroy it and return it right after the event, it's cool.

Hi all.

Wow I haven't posted in Cosplay.com for awhile but.. um..
I'm Japanese (ethnically) who lived in America for basically my whole life. I just recently moved "back" to Japan two years ago, and I would love to meet some people from here.

The only costume I have is Hong Kong from Hetalia, so I would probably go as that for one of those days.. I know there is a pretty big "Are you Alice" group going on, but would there be a random just coming together "cosplay.com" grouping at winter comiket? If so I am very interested. :)

あ、後「血筋的に」と言いましたが、家ではずっと日本語だったので日本語もぺらぺらです。なにか緊急時のと きにお役に立てるかもしれません...?!

Hey Kaze,

We're planning to get together at Celestial Shadow's house a few times (since most of us are staying there). We're also making plans to go somewhere and check out the New Year's celebration together. If you swap phone numbers/e-mail addresses with some of us, we can keep you up on what's going on.

The more the merrier.

Thanks for the reply kiratsukai!

Okay, so am I correct to think that there won't be a random gathering at Winter Comiket?

I have plans for New Years, but it would be great to hang out together if possible. Would it be okay to PM you my phone/e-mail address (both keitai better I'm guessing)?

Oh, and please call me Kazen. :) I registered on "cosplay archive" as that, and I know it should be Kaze but I'm actually kinda embarrassed with my name that I gave myself way back when (^_^;; ) .

Small change for us on Day 1 ~ we're going to leave the VOCALOID at home and wear Tohou (the costumes we wore at Tonari no Ketto last year). A Japanese friend of ours from Kobe will be travelling to Comiket, too and will be cosplaying Yakumo Yukari (http://media.giantbomb.com/uploads/0/1679/528366-swr_yukari_large.jpg). We want to join forces for solidarity. He's a total sweetheart.

We're planning to wear the same costumes to Yorustar anyway, so this way we only need to drag three costumes (not four).

Does anyone know what the regulations are on SMALL non-protruding wings? ie. If they don't extend past the shoulders? I can fold mine down to be pretty compact and then pin them to my vest so they don't shift or poke anyone or I can leave them behind entirely.

Going home for Xmas so won't be able to make it. Winter Comiket would be so much better than summer I thing but I'm usually abroad, the summer heat is brutal. Aiming to be out for Wonder Festival in February.

I'll be going to Winter Comiket, and I missed you guys for Summer Comiket, so I hope to meet up this time! ^__^

I'll be going as Saotome Alto and Sheryl Nome from Macross Frontier and Cesare Borgia from Cantarella. Not sure of days yet, but if anyone knows if Higuri Yuu/Kirendou is going to be there (because I hear she frequents Comiket), I'll be wearing Cesare that day.

See you all there!

Plasmagic> We're talking about the possibility of an after-Comiket get-together one night but haven't really finalized any plans at this point. But we'll all be around a little while to hang out and would love to meet you at the event, too.

As for attendees ~ the best place to check for specific artists is through their blogs/webpages. If they will be attending with a circle, there should be a hall-letter-number combination posted prominently on their site. That's their location at the event. Kigyou (industry) booths run all three days, but as far as I know, all of the amateur circles are limited to one day of participation per circle. So be sure to look for a date, too.

Kira: I think that would be a lot of fun, if you don't mind another person joining in. ^_^ Just let me know when and where and I'll be there!

From the website, it seems she will be there! *excited* December 30th is the date that's stated, but I can't find any more info on a simple glance. I'll look a little more closely when I'm not quite so tired. So, I'll be Cesare on the 30th, officially. Probably Alto on the 29th and loli!Sheryl on the last day. ^__^

I'm looking forward to meeting everybody!

I'll be at Winter Comiket again this year (first time I remembered to note it here :3).

Cosplaying as Kagamine Len: Love is War v. and putting my new camera through it's paces.
(after I finish raiding a few circles and friends)

Question for anyone (but other Love is War cosplayers or specific experience would be ideal), as electronics which make loud noise are banned, have you had any problems bringing a megaphone with no batteries?

Hopefully I'm organized enough to be there as long as I'd like, so not sure if I can be relied upon for anything much, but it would be great to get some photos together. I'll shoot you a PM.

Also, it's likely I'll have another Love is War cosplayer too.

If your prop is large (over 30cm), heavy enough to injure someone by hitting them with it, sharp/pointed, breakable/glass or can be used to make noise (regaurdless of if it has batterries or not): it's not allowed.

Comiket is super-strict about props.

It's best not to bring them at all.

General Comiket Rules (All Participants)

Paraphrased from the Winter Comiket 2010 Catalog

A tremendous number of participants attend Comiket each year and as a result, it's important that all follow the rules.

The entire concept of Comiket is that there are no "guests", only "participants". As a participant, please cooperate to make the event run as smoothly as possible. Read the rules in full and participate in Comiket with those rules well in mind.

Prohibitions

1) Anything that will bother other particiapants or trouble the neighborhood in which the event is held.

-testuya (lining up overnight)
-waving things about, hitting others, causing obstructions of traffic
-making loud noises
-changing into costumes in any area other than the changing rooms or arriving/leaving in costume.

2) Using facilities in ways other than intended.

-plugging appliances into venue electrical outlets
-parking or standing in the road near the venue

3) Causing fire hazards

-lighting fires
-smoking outside of designated smoking areas.

4) Soliciting

-distributing flyers or promotional materials in the hallways and streets is strictly prohibited. All solicitors must recieve prior approval and distribute materials from a formally rented circle space.

5) Do not impersonate staff, law enforcements, security guards or rescue workers.

Prohibited Items

The following items are prohibited at Comiket. Any offending items may be confiscated.

1) Dangerous items, illegal items or items that may be used to commit crimes

-metal-type prop weapons, swords, daggers, knives, blades, bats and staffs
-explosive or flammable materials
-other: extreme pornographic material displayed in plain sight of minors, breakable materials, etc.

2) Animals (exceptions made for guide animals)

3) Large batteries

-Car and motocycle batteries are dangerous when wet. Please do not bring them to the event or the lineup. Extra notebook and cellphone batteries are alright, provided you carry only 2 or 3.

4) Vehicles

-bicycles, scooters, roller skates, rollerblades, skateboards and wheeled shoes

5) Helium and other gasses

6) Other items: anything which may cause a danger or inconvenience to other participants.

Please:
-Do not come to Big Site by bike, motorcycle or car. There is no parking.
- When coming to Big Site via taxi, please ask them to stop some blocks away from the hall and to follow the intructions of any staff of police officers you meet on the road.
-Don't call a taxi to bring you home. There is no way to sort out which taxi belongs to whom.
-Don't get upset or worked up about others' opinions or works. Remember that those exhibiting their works hold them close to their hearts and temper your criticism accordingly.
-Please line up for bathrooms and public phones in a fork pattern: one line branching into several stalls/cubicles.
-Look out for yourself and others
-Be especially considerate of children and be aware that Comiket might not be an appropriate place to bring your own.
-Take steps to prevent the spread of influenza and other contagious illness (flu masks, staying home if you have a fever, etc.)

Accident Prevention

1) Smoke only in smoking areas.

2) Do not sit or leave luggage in the demarcated squares around emergency exits and fire fighting equipment.

3) Do not run or push under any circumstances.

4) When riding escalators, leave one step between yourself and the guest in front of you. Do not walk. Watch out for long sleeves, skirts and be careful that costume pieces or accessories do not fall onto the steps.

Mass Media and Photographs

Television crews, journalists and other members of the media should register beforehand or at the event reception desk. Covering some areas of the event is prohibited even for registered guests.

When interviewing or filming participants, state your affiliation clearly and ask for premission from all who will be filmed before proceeding.

When taking photos of cosplayers, please obtain permission before shooting any photos. Note that cosplay photography is limited to designated cosplay areas.

People on this thread are attending all three days. There are a few large groups going on (see the first post in this thread for information about them and who is involved). If you want to know when a particular group is going, your best bet is to pm the members. A lot of plans are still sketchy.

As far as I know, the largest groups that have formed here are:

Day 1 - Tohou Project (3 members)
Day 2 - Are You Alice? (5-8 members, depending on how the DPRK behaves)
Day 3 - Kuroshitsuji II (4 members)

There is also a "Love is War" VOCALOID group, a Hakuoki group, and a ONE PIECE group recruiting and a few Hetalia cosplayers who,at this stage at least, seem to be attending seperately.

Thank you ^o^. I will pm. Them

Just a little question, for you which days are the less crowded. I know is always crowded, I heard the first day is the less crowded and the 3rd one the most crowded,??
And to go to comiket which time of the day is better??

If you are going to cosplay and want to get at least 2 or 3 hours in ~ you should arrive at 9 or 10. You'll spend an hour in line and about 30 minutes in the dressing room line, but you should be in-costume by noon and have a good 3-4 hours to take photos and mingle before you need to worry about getting back to the dressing room to change out. If you hate lines, arrive after noon to avoid the first entirely... though be aware that the cosplay line is just as long in the afternoon since many cosplayers switch to a 2nd costume mid-day. The cosplay areas also close at 4pm (much earlier than most other events).

Day 1 has the most cosplayers (about 800 rsvped on archive).

Day 2 has less. (about 700 rsvped)

Day 3 has the least (under 500 rsvped).

At least twice that number will probably show up.

The neighboring event at Tokyo Fashion Tower sees just the opposite split, with the most people attending on Day 3 and the least on Day 1.

The skew is probably because of the nature of the genre breakup and the "ippansha" (regular guests) the goods on sale attracts.

To sum up: Day 1 ~ The most cosplayers. Mostly girls but with hordes of male scalpers raiding the kigyou booths upstairs, especially in the daytime. If you line up at 9 ~ you get in at abt 10:30.

Day 2 ~ The most regular guests (kigyou spillover and Tohou Project), genders split about 50/50. If you line up at 9 ~ you get in at abt 11:30.

Day 3 ~ The fewest cosplayers. Most guests are men. 90% of doujinshi on sale is hardcore porn. Kigyou booths are mostly sold out and totally picked over, so the area used to hold their obscene lines is open to cosplayers. If you line up at 9 ~ you get in at abt 10:30.

finished Day 1, got myself a Key set and cosplayed, in the reverse order
cosplay square (the one behind west hall) was very nice and quiet at 11/12am whenever we got there, but quickly became massively crowded

I decided to try bringing my megaphone since I was able to go so early on day 1, and I could always come back later or another day. Once I showed them it had no batteries, they allowed it.
