View Full Version : To Remake Or Not To Remake? (Yuna FFX)

10-01-2003, 09:26 PM
Hey everyone ^^.

I think this new section of the forum is a real asset for people wanting to improve... so now I post something hehe. One of my older cosplays (well ok... it's not thaaat old lol juss 2 1/2 years), Yuna from FFX, has always been my favorite costume. I've remade bits and pieces of it, but it's still not as perfect as I'd like it to be. I'm attributing some of that to the fact that I can't make pleats very well lol. But I want to know, what do you all think? Should I totally remake it? Are there certain aspects that work/don't work? Any help and thoughts would be greatly appreciated ^^. Here's some pics...

Firstly, the paining on the obi and skirt is awesome!

You've even got the black under top right, a lot of people just get lazy when it comes to that and wear whatever.

Does front of the top cross over? It's a little hard to tell with white in photos. It looks like it does, but I am not sure.

The sleeves are possibly a little long, but I am being very picky there.

Most people post stuff here that is really flawed and I try to think of how to mention their faults without hurting their feelings, but this is a hard costume to find something wrong with, which is a good thing!

If you need to re-do anything, it would be maybe the black top. I know I said it was good, but that was just compared to everyone elses. The straps should be a little thinner, and and bottom one needs to be higher.

But I wouldn't bother really, it's pretty much perfect.

The top is something I've been having an issue with @_@. Mines is juss... this strip of white fabric that I wrap over myself lol. Yuna's does cross in the front and magically hangs off her boobs, and I'm really lost at how to do that ><.

You're one of my favorite Yunas... the detail in the costume is awesome and you wear it really well.

The top does look a little... off... but I wouldn't know the first thing about what shape to make it, so whatever works...

I'm not totally familiar with the design, and I'm not sure if it's just the photo, but should the top of the staff be larger?

this is the best yuna i have seen... most are always.. well.. just not good.. and makes me wounder if they look at themselves in the mirror before they go out (that's really bad) but i love all the details, very well done and the pleats are fine. the only thing i see odd.. as said already is the white part in the front.
i would suggest using a fabric with a little stretch so it clings better.. and attach it to the beltso that when it peeks out the bottom it is even and spaced right.. it could also help to tack it onto the black top underneath to keep it in the position it appears in in the game.
and i suppose the sleevs are a little long.
but beyond that Flawless!

I don't think that you should remake the whole costume. Like everyone else said, the white part does need fixing. The bow in the obi looks great except that I think that you should try to lift in higher if you really want to be that accurate. Though I think it looks good already. On the beads that connect to the obi there is that long light blue bead. It's the longest one. I think that needs to be a little longer. It shoes a little too much string. And lastly the head of the staff is a little small. Other than that the costume looks great. Don't remake it just imporve some of the parts.

Omg!!! You Look Just Like Lenne!!!!

aaahahha. Thanks Gavin XP

So a stretchy material for the top? Perhaps some sort of stretch cotton would work for that. The bow for the obi seems to be an issue. What I did was, oh so ghettoly, stick some tissue in it to make it "poof" out a bit, but through the years that's proven to be a bad idea lol.

That is definitely one of the nicer Yuna costumes out there. I don't know about a stretchy material for the top, as I suspect that pulling it tight over your bust could make it hang a little bit strangely at the bottom (where it would not be stretched), but I agree that the top does need a little bit of shaping.

The design on the skirt is just lovely. Certainly much nicer than mine! As for the pleats, Yuna's skirt is much more deeply and consistently pleated... have you ironed your pleats in all the way down? What kind of fabric is your skirt made of? There's a fabulous press cloth called the Rajah press cloth from www.clotilde.com that's impregnated with chemicals to make pleats set much more crisply and permanently, and will make them permanent in 50/50 blends.

Excellent costume. Aside with the aforementioned suggestions, might I add that you attempt making the Obi again. Yours looks really nice, but in all reality, it's actually tied, or appears so, and isn't stuffed like a pillow. The painting'll be hard to do again ;_; But, if you're going for accuracy...

Here's a link to a photo I'm sure you've seen... The back of the costume. I'd suggest making a VERY long belt, 6-8 feet long for this, with a rather stiff fabric, one that's got a lot of interfacing so it holds up. Then, check out this site on tying obi to see if you can get it like hers...

I thiknk I had another tutorial, but I can't find it. Really, if you'd like, you can try to make a "butterfly obi" belt, which has the bow seperate from the belt, and is much easier to put on, in that the bow is on a wired piece and slides behind the obi.

I hope this helps!

*o* sana i LOVE your costume SO much *________* the painting on the obi is just amazing o_______o :: is blown away :: the only thing i can think of is the white top like everyones said. ^^

hmm...yea, that looks amazing. but a question...i'm not sure tho. does Yuna have like a bell hanging from the staff?

yea, she does, it makes it "tinkle" when she does the sending, fun fun ^^

Sana-chan, your costume is very very lovely. Your skirt is amazing, such detail. The only suggestion i could make it similar to the others, the white shirt. A different material and a little reshaping could really add alot to the costume. Also, the sleeves are a *lil* wrinkley, its amazing what a good ironing can do, thet is, unless they cant be ironed because of the paint.

A gorgeous cosplay of Yuna! Nicely done! It deserves the golf clap!

Hmm, i looked over your pics and personally i find nothing wrong with your costume. It's very accurate and well done.

Honestly if no one can find anything wrong with it from sight, i don't think there is a need for you to re-make it. However you are the one wearing it, and if you feel very strongly about re-doing it, then go for it. Although i'm not sure if there is much for you to do.

a good way to "shape" the top is to try and get the top to go on the sides of your boobs. Maybe using a safety pin or even sewing the top in a tiny spot to the side part of the black top. It'll help it give that shape cause it looks like the top clings more to the sides of her boobs. Like when you cross it over in the front pull it horizontally over, not downwards when you cross, then let it fall down and go under the obi. It's almost as if one side covers both boobs then the other side does the same but crosses over the first. The obi could be better in the back with the bow. The flappy thingie (that's what i call it) that hangs over and covers the center of the bow should dangle down just a little not fit snugly against the bottom of the bow.

here's mine to show you what i'm trying to say:

it's upside down but i'm just kinda lazy to turn the image right side around ^_^;

But what i did for mine was make 2 rectangles of fabric one was a little wider and longer than the other one i sewed them up turned them right side out and stacked the smaller one ontop of the bigger one because in the pictures her bow there's a bigger "bow" in back with a smaller "bow" in front of it. Then I put the dangly loopy to cover that. But if you truly want to tie it like a traditional obi you'd probably need like a ton of fabric. Oh yeah i used a little thin layer of batting inbetween the fabric for the obi to give it a little fullness. If you want to go the interfacing route get "shirt and collar" interfacing. That stuff is SUPER sturdy and if you iron it on both pieces that'll make up your rectangle, it'll give a good stiff (but still able to crush for packing) bow.

The pleats don't look bad to me. The skirt is good. I wouldn't change that. The staff head should be a bit larger. I'd make it 12 inches by 12 inches it'll give you a good size staff head without giving it that "overly huge" staff head that a lot of yuna cosplayers seem to do.

Is there any way to redo just the bow in the back without having to remake the entire obi? Just an idea. However it might not look right because the the new paint might not match up with the old paint.

btw yes it's a nice outfit. :bigtu:

and yes pleats are a pain in the ass. I've tried doing pleats 3 times and still haven't gotten the hang of it.

Lol Miaka no baka, your link just gave me an ad for viagra...

People have suggested pinning the white top ect. My idea is stick on velcro. You could stick it to the black undertop quiet easily with that, and you wouldn't have bits of pin showing. In my experience, that stuff holds quiet well.

*Looks at FFX mousepad* Yuna's top does defy gravity a little...

Ooh! IDEA! Sew the cross over bit so it can't move, then just slip your head through when putting it on.

OMG!! THAT OBI IS KICK ASS! I'm making a Yuna outfit for Katsucon. Hopefully my obi will turn out ok XD.

Oooo okie thanks for the help guys! I think I have a good idea what to do with the top now. The sleeves, well... I've remade them a thousand times already lol, what's one more ^_^. I'm sure I could just remake the bow part of the obi cuz I honestly don't want to repaint the whole thing... and SomethingLulu (my cousin) lol would kill me X_X.

What I did for the top is I sewed the top so it made a little roll all the way to the top of the boobage area. It makes it a little easier to make it go were you want it to go. I had to redo it for the ShoujoCon redo where my boobage decided to grow. -.-;; So I do need to finish my new top.

IMHO the bow in the back looks great, I don't think anyone except an expert obi tier person could get it perfect. I am not really sure what people expect of us Yuna cosplayers.

Otherwise you and Yuna are my idols when it comes to the Yuna costumes.
