After all the working out I've done, I've decided that I'm going to redo my Portgas D. Ace costume for AAC. Mainly because I'm ashamed of how I looked when I went as him earlier this year, but I like how I look now, and feel ready to do it better this time. With that said I was wondering how many of you kind folk have reached or are close to reaching your ideal shape for a certain costume you wanna pull off, I'd love to hear about it or even see some pics ^_^

Kinda embarassing but o wells.

around June 2009 worst shape of my life, bad dieting, stressed out, and probably worst point of my life. approximate body fat 25% body fat @ 165 pounds

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs175.snc1/6571_233476735155_777265155_7862651_6937410_n.jpg

Sept 14 2009 better diet, worked out at home with 20 pound dumbbells push ups etc for 2 months. Joined YMCA gym around when the picture was taken. @ Approximately 155 pounds

Dec 19 2009 4 months hard hitting the gym, started on protein shakes, and jack3d pre-workout for energy. lifted every day when my muscles weren't overly sore, focused on form, minimal rest, better diet, NO RUNNING OF ANY TYPE. Just cardio with weights with minimal rest to keep my heart rate up =)

Then took 6months off cause I got lazy after 2month vacation to Vietnam, then 2months back on.

I just got my size back, although I look much fatter now =( gained a bit of thickness in my chest, a improved lat spread, and little more traps. Although I think I got little fatter =\ @ 165 pounds lookin for 5 more pounds then going on a cutting cycle (ACTUALLY GONNA HIT THE TREADMILL OMG)

What started as a 3 month goal became an obsession to me. This is the result of almost one years worth of training. I now am in the best shape of my life and I don't plan on stopping any time soon. :)

Ditto. Both of your before/after pics are very inspirational, granted I'll be starting a bit further behind than you two.

I'll be back here in a few months with whatever progress I make in that time. Won't work miracles, but some progress is better than no progress.

Im working on this right now actually. I started out in july at 290, by far the worst of my life. I started taking pics every two weeks since the end of july, and I'm currently down to 275. I'm making a sideshow for when I hit 235 again so I'll have a constant reminder of why to work out and to see the progress. I'll post when it happens

well I hope Jess doesn't get mad for posting her pics, but this was a girl who asked for some workout advice around late last year. I dunno if she's still an active poster or not, but personally I thought she looked pretty good already anyways she listened to a lot of our advice =)

Mainly active people around that time was me, Andy Lee, Dr.Pepper, and Eminai =)

i'm only posting cause she had great results and no girls have yet to post any before or afters

I'm hoping to be at my goal come March of next year. Good thing it's a really slow con season for me during fall/winter so I can completely focus on losing weight and save for costumes I want to make. 43 pounds lost and 30-40 more pounds to go!

I had always been really active with competitive sports, this was about a year after starting the gym (6'2 165lbs 7-9% body fat)
http://c1.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/116/l_17ac89f2ea3c4c90916e29a92e43b3c0.jpg

This is now. Put on 40lbs of muscle in the past 3 years since then (6'2 198lbs 7-8% body fat). More than tripled the max weight I can push now as well and I do not neglect my legs at all.

Gonna work more on adding on muscle (specially in the back, chest, shoulders and biceps). My legs will come along with what I'm putting them though, and my cardio and cross fit will get my abs and help keep my body toned.

Hm, well I'm a new guy here but I figure I'll throw some pictures up. These aren't really before and afters so much as general progress pictures.

I'm also always happy to try and give some advice to anyone who would like some. I'd like to think the last six years of my life spent researching and experimenting with lifting and working out amount to something useful. :]

This is approximately how I've looked for the majority of the last four years

[Please ignore the general conditions of this first picture. You'll come to find I'm not a terribly bashful person. :/]

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs156.snc4/37146_594134482750_17909005_34341103_6872669_n.jpg

and this is more of what I'm trying to work back towards but leaner. It's primarily a size difference. The weight discrepancy between the first two pictures and this third one is about 10 - 15 pounds of muscle. The body fat percentage is always between 10% and 11%. I'd like to be the size I am in this picture with approximately 9% body fat.

[ Yeah. I'm rockin' the Bruce Lee hairdo in this one. I know.]

What's there to be jealous of? Each person have individual goals and individual genetics. You should post some pictures just documenting your progress, I'd say. It'd likely motivate other girls to share their own progress.

I used to weigh in around 180 at 5'10 that was about a year ago. i started walking everywhere and lifting weights just about every other day(i'd skip a few days if my muscles hurt or something) but now i'm at about 150 at 5'11...no working out doesn't make you taller i just stopped slouching lol. but i'm pretty proud of myself. if i find any pictures of a before i'll post up the progress

Isn't that a flexibility/stretching issue? You're too tight so you're a little hunched?? I am probably wrong...

distantarray
10-06-2010, 02:21 PM
I found working out made me shorter lol

working out and lifting weights makes you wider which makes you look shorter in comparison, like skinny guys will look taller than buffer guys the same height if you don't compare them side by side, but maybe your hunching over like already mentioned? I really doubt it'll really make you shrink otherwise I'd be screwed =p

If anything it improved my posture and made me look a inch taller if anything, but balance is the key, like people who do nothing but benchpresses their shoulders will start to lean fowards giving bad posture habits.

FYDave
10-06-2010, 07:31 PM
I found working out made me shorter lol

To my knowledge, the only scientifically proven way that weightlifting could make you shorter is if you've somehow managed to damage your growth plates if you're still in a stage of growth.

However, it's far more likely that you would damage your growth plates playing a relatively physical sport such as soccer or football rather than weightlifting.

As the people above have already mentioned, I'd think it's more likely that perhaps you have issues with your posture that certain lifting routines might have exacerbated or created in and of themselves or it's quite possibly nothing more than a perception issue where, like the guy directly above me noted, you might just think you're shorter because you've gotten wider but gained no real appreciable height to compensate for the width.

I know very few people that enjoy doing large quantities of running.

I do like riding my bicycle a lot though. During the summer I was pushing 6 - 12 miles a day on the thing riding around Boston. It got me hooked like crack.. not that I would know how addicting crack can be. :/

For me running and cardio is super easy too. I don't mind it and I don't get exhausted easily, but it's the mixed training with weight lifting I really need improvement on. My stretching class is helping to improve muscle as well, so I hope that helps.

BKYOUNG. That is seriously impressive! I agree with you too. In high school they don't offer a lot for different workout routines other than the occasional two miles, wrestling (which I absolutely hated), and like...badminton.

Wow, such impressive pics/stories in this thread! Excellent fit-spiration. XD

I myself have lost about 110 pounds since early 2009.

At my highest recorded weight (it probably was higher around the holidays but I was avoiding scales for obvious reasons), I was 243 in January of 2009, and I'm only 5'5". ><

I'm now around 130 pounds, and trying to swap the last of the excess chub for muscle, which I already have a lot of in my legs especially because the bulk of the weight was lost running on a treadmill. My legs are a lot bigger than I'd like, as are my hips and butt. I'm aiming for a more slender, lean body type, but the last of the pounds are stubborn and I've been set back by recurrent health problems that prevent me from doing strenuous exercise.

I don't have any really good before and after pics, but you can get an idea from these:

Before- taken in January 2009 at Ohayocon (I'm on the far right in purple): http://icosplay.com/ohayo09/dsc00196.jpg

After- me as Gary Oak at Dragoncon 2010, last month: http://www.cosplay.com/photo/2700377/

a close-up, you can really tell a difference in my face: http://www.cosplay.com/photo/2732652/

I typically wear guys clothing, and I'm a size 28 in mens pants, but in womens sizes, I went from a size 20 to a size 6. My goal is to trim up my legs/hips/butt by the end of January to make a convincing Kiba from Wolf's Rain. That boy is ridiculously skinny, so it's a hard goal, but I'm fairly confident I can do it. I have an elliptical machine now, so wish me luck!

Thanks! I'd like to think my results could be encouraging to others. I know when I was starting out the numbers seemed daunting. If you've got 100+ pounds to lose it can seem so unlikely that you'll ever be small, but I'm proof that if you want something enough, you'll get it. XD

I actually took some underwear pics, but I'm too chickenshit to post them just yet. Maybe once I've got some further progress shots to put them against, haha.

Cool thread though, I'll keep an eye on it and other Fitness board threads.

I think the best I got is when I worked out for Anime Expo 2010, I picked Alex about a year before the convention...I knew it was gonna be a challenge to take my shirt off in front of 40k people...
Around december 2009 I was 215 pounds...
during my workouts and diets I was 198 by the time AX rolled by...

<---thats the result..

I just wanted to announce to everyone it is officially one year today since I started getting in shape and changing my life for the better. What was supposed to be a three month goal has become a life changing moment helping myself, others, and becoming an overall happier, healthier, individual. I really hope my example will motivate and guide others into a more healthier and active lifestyle. At the very least, you can get a sweet six pack out of the deal. :D

Some particulars I would like to thank are andy_lee08, we haven't heard a word form her in a long time, but last I checked she is happily married to the man of her dreams in the grand state of Texas. SamuriSmurfX For encouraging me to switch things up. Giant Alucard for being one of the other proud beach body vets around here. PhDPepper for being an overall motivator, more than he realizes. Rjr3412 you are always helpful on these forums! Em1nAI you are my idol for nutritional discipline! Seriously you and I could take on Gandhi in a contest of willpower. And of course, Distantarray how could I leave you out? you are like a human wiki, but you know with an actual sense of humor. You weren't afraid to point out my mistakes as well as others. And your advice was always set to simple and strait-forward. You have wrote so many helpful threads and I hope you continue to.

And to everyone else, whether you are a new member or old trying to get fit, we're here to help! Thanks everyone for everything you have given me. :bigtu:

lol i get bored but yea most stuff are pretty redundant cause most people ask the same questions without looking up threads, they don't want to look through 1000 pages to find their same question but if they look would probably take 3-4 at best -_-;

I don't mind typing it since I usually do it when I have nothin better to do, probably not good for my carpal tunnel though lol

HAHAHAHA

Remember your supposed to eat 6 GOOD meals a day, cheating on 1 or 2 isn't bad as long as your not eating it with large fries and a large soda. Unsweet Ice Tea can cut you around 500 calories for a large drink, and fries another 500 or so.

Also the more you workout the more you need to maintain your lean body mass. Look at Jason Huh he's my friend's cousin.

http://goldenmuscles.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/img_10791280700464.jpg

Just became IBFF pro this July. He's already noted as one of the top bodybuilders in the industry especially as his leg's are concerned. he's a regular at Cheeseburger Cheeseburger lmao!

The more you workout, the more your allowed to cheat on your diet, many body builders still don't obtain enough calories to grow bigger. Getting good solid diet often lacks clean calories after all.

That's why I always say workout, and NOT TO DIET at your start, and let your willpower build cause soon your gonna go god damn it's gonna take me 20 minutes of RUNNING to burn off this can of soda!!!

As your body changes your confidence and willpower will get stronger period. Also even if you workout 30 minutes a WEEK, after a full year you'll have noticeable differences. The hard part is pushing yourself to do 30minutes of INTENSE workout, and not just 1 set of benchpress then rest for 3-5minutes then doing another set.

Basically my 30 minute workout is

I'm putting my weights as example.

Lat pull downs 135 lbs wide as possible explosive and fast 10 times , NO REST then 105 lbs 10 times moderate speeds , NO REST then 75 lbs 10 times slowly. 1 minute rest then Repeat 2 more times for total of 9 sets.

I repeat that for everyworkout, do about 6-8 exercises for each muscle group. This is circuit training with HIIT training included.

Circuit training is quick intense workout that keeps your heart rate elevated MORE effective in burning fat and building muscle in recent studies.

HIIT is high intensity interval training which incorporates mixing up your workouts. Like if your gonna run you run jog walk sprint in random order. This burns more fat than running in a constant speed, think of cruise control saves gas while on the highway, if you have a heavy foot drive like a moron inbetween cars and braking a lot you'll burn more gas.

With my biceps and triceps I do 2-3 sets of continous drop sets.

Starting from 45 pound curls, to 40, 35, 30, 25, 20, 15, 10, 5, 10, 5, 10, 5 that's 1 set with NO rest inbetween. 1-2 minute rest and repeat. Alternating from flat curl to hammer curl (flat curl is where your palms are faced up , and hammer is where your thumb is pointed up) Since it's Bicep which Bi means 2 it targets each muscles separately

Triceps you can do it with push downs with palms facing up, thumb up, and palm facing down. I continously go from one grip the next which completely blows up my triceps.

biceps and triceps are easy to workout and pretty basic since it's primarily one movement, I do biceps with dumbbells and triceps with cables, but often mix things up.

NEVER get on a set routine, ALWAYS mix it up to help avoid plateaus in training.

REMEMBER THE HARDEST WEIGHT TO LIFT IS YOUR ASS OFF YOUR COUCH

Diet soda is actually WORSE for you than regular soda. Not only that I know people who are literally addicted to diet coke where they'll get migraines if they try to stop drinking it. So yes it is addictive to some people.

More Diet Drinks, More Weight Gain

Fowler's team looked at seven to eight years of data on 1,550 Mexican-American and non-Hispanic white Americans aged 25 to 64. Of the 622 study participants who were of normal weight at the beginning of the study, about a third became overweight or obese.

For regular soft-drink drinkers, the risk of becoming overweight or obese was:

* 26% for up to 1/2 can each day
* 30.4% for 1/2 to one can each day
* 32.8% for 1 to 2 cans each day
* 47.2% for more than 2 cans each day.

For diet soft-drink drinkers, the risk of becoming overweight or obese was:

* 36.5% for up to 1/2 can each day
* 37.5% for 1/2 to one can each day
* 54.5% for 1 to 2 cans each day
* 57.1% for more than 2 cans each day.

hmmm.... what you say makes sense, but i don't get how the statistics are valid since people that are drinking diet soda are predisposed to being overweight because they are drinking the diet soda for a reason. For instance, Skinny people probably wont be drinking diet soda unless they are anorexics. I don't know, i don't want a debate. you know far more than i do. but, I'm trying to subconsciously find a reason not to stop drinking it because i am truly addicted to aspartame and Ive tried to quit drinking it before. its not like diet soda tastes good, i just cant stop drinking it. Sorry for all the psychology talk but im taking psych this semester and as I'm talking i am evaluating myself and picking out flaws as i type.

drinking things that are sweet but without the calories can trick the body to gaining weight, Dr Pepper had some good articles that explained the thing about diet soda's entirely before (the poster not the drink :p) but I'll try to get around to it after the gym :)

This. Sweeteners have been shown to trigger insulin spikes/releases when consumed. Insulin is a double bladed weapon. Incredibly helpful and incredibly harmful depending on diet and activity levels. Its what basically helps signal your body to deliver the nutrients you've consumed to your body.

On another side of things diet soda has been shown to cause bloating and weight gain, and someone drinking diet soda IIRC can lose up to 10 pounds in a year just from stopping with not other changes.

And on a more psych oriented view point, many people have the habit of justifying a cheat if they are "making up" for it somewhere else. The big mac with a diet coke, or just a medium popcorn with the diet soda. It don't work that way, lol.

If you are really drinking 6 cans of soda everyday (and I've been there) you need to weem yourself off. Try to drop down to 3-4 cans a day for a week, then 1-2, and then one maybe once or twice a week really shouldn't stand in your way of making progress.

And frankly, if you are drinking your gallon to gallon and a half of water a day, you probably aren't going to be all that thirsty for soda. Though replacing the caffeine intake can be important, you'd probably benefit from slowly getting off of it for a while just so that when you need a pick me up, it actually works.

Around February/March of this year, I decided I wanted to lose weight until I was within a "normal" BMI. Not really for health reasons- I've always been healthy, and I'm a strong advocate of Health At Every Size. I just wanted to have a body that I could feel comfortable doing fun cosplays with.

Anyway, by restricting my calories and just generally leading a more active lifestyle, I've managed to drop from 165-170 pounds to my current weight of 135.

Here's my face at my heaviest (185-190), my previous weight, and me now.

It's quite possible that working out more has increased the speed or efficiency of your metabolism and subsequently you can eat more yet still lose weight.

I never knew that people would want to lose weight when they're already under 110. I could toss you with one arm!

Although, which one are you in the pictures? Purple, blue, or pink hair?

Just to clarify that there is a decent difference between the two, about two inches less around the waist, three around the stomach, an inch an a half from around the chest, and my arms are about half to three quarters of an inch bigger.
And yeah, I probably need more sun, lol.

Hey guys. Okay so I looove food. I mean, it's a problem. I love food to much, but every time I look in the mirror I see this fat, ugly thing. (I know that's a bit of exaggeration, but still. I'm really self-critical.)

So this marks the start of my new 'working out and not eating as much junk' program. :D

Wish me luck!

Edit: Oh. Right. I'm 5'2'' and 135 pounds. Working on my stomach and legs.

you're LUCKY, i'm 5'3 and i WISH i was 135, that's what i'm aiming for.
giving up junk is hard. but there are alternatives. I LOVE these kudos bars that are 100 calories and some have m&ms in them! I keep them for my snack during school. same with milk cereal bars. yummy~
but food is my problem as well. but exercising more definitely helps curb appetite. plus havinga strong will too. i just tell myself to STOP. drinking more fluids definitely helps too

Samurai: Aw, thanks. xD

Beni: Yeah. My will isn't all that great. The tap water at my house makes me gag, though, so I usually end up drinking soda which is a terrible habit. x-x

Also, how old are you? At my age, 135 is a lot of weight to be carrying considering everyone around me isn't even at 100 yet. ,_,

As a fellow food enthusiast I take the advice my nutritionist friend gave me, which is "don't cut bad food out, add good food in." ie. focus on adding veggies, whole wheat, water, lean protein, whatever it is that your current diet is weak in and you will have less room for the bad stuff. Plus you won't have to feel like you are denying yourself food.

just a few years ago i thought i was fat and horrible being 5'4" and about 140lbs. i felt uncomfortable and super self conscious with just about 0 self esteem about my body.

i tried dieting. first one i went on was one of Michael Thurmond's diets. (bought his book) i did good at first and it really did work wonders, but the stress was getting to me and the diet was really strict and nearly tasteless. :/ besides that, my parents were giving me a really hard time about not "eating enough" or "eating bird food" (obese family) even though the diet had me eating 6 or more times a day and a serving of protein in most of the meals. it got pricy too. fresh foods for ya. so i dropped the diet. started relaxing and eating often, but small meals.

wouldn't you know that my weight dropped so quickly that i was amazed! within a few months i had stripped off 20lbs and was feeling awesome! now i've gained about 9lbs, but i can't notice a thing. started working out again to strip off inches instead of lbs this time.

^ Wow, Megantron, you look great! You look a lot happier and more confident now too!

So, after showing my LJ friends list and getting a lot of 'wow, this gives me hope to get that small' responses, I'm going to stop being a coward and just post the stupid underwear pics, and some totally unflattering 'before' pics.

Okay, so I was 243 pounds in these pics, the left one taken January 2009- Yep, embarrassing, but I wanted to show how huge my arms were, since in baggy clothing it's harder to tell.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v368/animeisha/beforeweightloss.jpg

and in these I'm about 130-ish pounds, taken in early October 2010.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v368/animeisha/fitnessprogressoct2010.jpg

So yeah, I lost over 110 pounds. I went from a BMI of 40 (morbidly obese), to one of about 21.5.

For those curious about the effects of the dramatic weight loss, I don't have much extra skin to speak of, just a tiny bit on my stomach, but there's still some flab too, so I'm hoping to tone that up some. I have stretch marks, but they're not pink or raised, they're white and fading even more.

I'd still like to drop another 10 pounds or so and build some more muscle, but I've come a long way. I'm hoping others who've got a lot of weight to lose will see that with a lot of work, you can still look pretty good if you get the weight off.

Thanks therob27 and Kasinator! :D

I don't really have too many tips, I wasn't really a calorie counter or anything, I pretty much just hit the treadmill for 1-2 hours a day, 6 days a week for the first several months and cut out fast food entirely as well as soda and most sweets. My weight loss is honestly the result of my slightly obsessive personality...when I want something, I'm incredibly focused until I get it. ^^;

Wow, you look awesome, seriously! You look further along than halfway, I can't imagine you've that much more to lose! I wish I had gotten more before pics myself, but I kind of stayed away from cameras during my obese phase, for understandable reasons, haha.

That's an awesome attitude too about posting progress pics, you're so right! If you've worked as hard as we have, you shouldn't be afraid to show your results. I found the picture of me on the right there the other night when going through old journal posts and I couldn't believe it was me. When I think about how huge I used to be, I cut myself a little more slack for having not quite made it to my goal yet.

Amazing work, keep it up! :)

Everyone on here looks great! I'm also on the diet/fitness kick - I've lost 18 lbs since March and hoping to lose another 10-15. I guess that means I'm a little over halfway. I'm looking forward to being able to cosplay as the thin girl again!

I've added more toning exercises lately. Hoping to tighten up my upper arms, thighs, and tummy some more. Thanks for posting the pics for inspiration!

I have never felt more inspired. Seeing your amazing progress really hits it home for me. I'm not too far from the weight you started at, so being able to look at the progress of someone who was similarly situated not so long ago means more that you can imagine.

I've been hustling, but I'm really going to pick up the pace now, and whenever I feel like I'm about to falter, I'll just remember that my target weight is not an impossible goal. Hopefully I'll be able to post my own before and after photos by the beginning of summer. Thanks so much for sharing, you're really an inspiration.

Well, not so much a weight thing, but still a success story for me. Just did a 5k run this morning. I'm on the big side, a lot of muscle and a bit of gut so running isn't my forte. Finished 285 place out of 859, at 36:10. Never stopped running, and god my legs hate me for it.

Now my mom is trying to talk me into the 10k in march @_@

My story has two parts.

Last summer I was about 190lbs, and I'm now sitting at a modestly comfortable 150lbs at 5'6". I'd like to say I lost all 40lbs through hard work and discipline, but unfortunately radiation therapy had something to do with it as well (about 35lbs worth of something to do with it). It's amazing what not being able to taste food for three months will do to your weight.

But the part I want to focus on now is what I've done since then to not only keep the weight off, but keep moving toward my goal of 135-140lbs. I work out 4-5 days a week, both cardio and weights (I'm following an Army fitness regimen, preparing for the APFT next summer, that's also part of my motivation) and I eat like a horse, but it's a lot of lean dairy, protein, complex carbs and VEGGIES.

I'm proud to say I've put on 5-10lbs of muscle in the last 3 months alone and still going. :)

Hooah.

Well, my success story is a long time in the making. XD I'd been obese my whole life and by 19, I'd had enough of it. I got tired of going to the store and never finding clothes in my size, I got tired of being out of breadth whenever I tried to tie my shoes or walk up a flight of stairs, I got tired of people automatically shrugging me off as 'the fat girl' and not bothering to get to know me. Anyway, I'm sure you guys get the idea.

Summer of 2008, I started eating healthier foods and being more active, nothing too intense at first, I did a lot of walking mostly. At my highest weight, I was 215 (I'm only 5'3). Here's a picture~ (btw, ignore the ridiculously HUGE bruise on my arm. This was taken during lacrosse season so I was pretty much covered in bruises).

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-sf2p/v82/251/50/505216559/n505216559_75858_9384.jpg

Fast forward to spring of 2009 (convention time!) and I'd worked my way down to 130-135lbs. =) Ideally, I would have loved to hit 120, but school stress and family drama bumped my weight back up to 140 (it didn't help that I turned 21 and really like beer hah), and a year later, I'm still about 140lbs. I haven't lost hope though. =D I didn't gain any more weight back so as far as I'm concerned, staying the same weight is still a win. XD I'll be graduating college in a few months though and I'd be willing to wager eating healthier (no more study procrastinating late night food binges or ordering take-out because the cafeteria is closed...) and exercising will be far easier.

And for reference, here's a picture of what I look like now (I'm in the middle).

Hey everyone! Your success stories are all so awesome and I'm super proud of everyone!

I really want to lose weight for my health and of course to feel better in clothes and cosplay. The thinnest I've been was 170 pounds (I felt pretty good then) and the highest has been 215. Currently I weigh 195 and I've been told I don't look that big. But I feel it and I hate looking in the mirror after a shower. I carry most of my weight in my thighs and legs. I really want to get down to 130-140 pounds. Which is what my doctor says is a healthy weight for my height (5'5).

I really want to see an improvement in my thighs and legs as I do not have a really big tummy. I also don't eat a lot but I do love my carbs... pasta and bread! And I only drink water as I don't like the taste of coke. I sometimes have juice in the morning.

I also started running and that is how I went down to 195 from 215. I will keep you guys posted and see if I have the courage to post some pictures.. maybe some "after" pictures when I get there :P Any suggestions on what you guys have been doing? Should I stick with just cardio? Or work in some weight lifting?

Thanks everyone :D

Combining cardio and weight lifting will get you the best results. Muscle not only weighs more than fat, but it takes more calories to maintain muscle even at rest, so you're burning when you're not lifting, unlike a routine that incorporates cardio but leaves out the weights (burning when you're exercising but not otherwise).

I've been following that general plan for about three months now and I've seen some good results. My scale weight hasn't budged since I'm gaining muscle, but my body composition sure has because I'm losing fat.

All of your stories are very inspiring. In fact, they were so inspiring that I started to exercise after reading only a few of them.

Anyway, I have been trying to lose weight( I'm 255lb, 5'6 feet) for otakon 11 but its really hard to do so growing up with bad habits, having little time for anything but work, and enough drama to be put in a soap opera. Everyone here is so amazing! I'm impressed.

I'm almost five feet (not going to grow any taller) and I fluctuate between 105~108.

I tried losing weight for a few months because people kept telling me I was fat on my youtube dances, but because of my weird body type (fat in chest and inner thighs), I could only get down to 103 (my once 32 DD boobs suffered and have not fully recovered).

I eat all the time (but it's usually healthy food: I don't like grains or soda), but I'm a considered pretty skinny for an American.
The only fat I ever manage to lose from dieting and exercise comes from my chest. I went down to a C cup and I'm steadily rising back to a D, but I'm just as fat everywhere else as I was before.

Is there anyone here who has a similar type of body response to diets?

Hello everyone~!
So, I've never been overweight exactly. But i've always had major body issues.
It doesnt help that i have Hypothyroidism, and Diabetes.
When i was 12-14 i used to eat ALL THE TIME.
I would eat whole bags of chips, then 4 hungry man meals, and drink 12 sodas a day.
At my worst, I weighed 140.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y109/jarori43/l_8571b26e879617c8bce101d0cc5bda7b.jpg

And then when i met my current boyfriend in 07, I began to starve myself so i would be thinner and more appealing to him.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y109/jarori43/l_54510fd6b115dc3410a9e1af6c3f97eb.jpg
My legs were noticibly much thinner.
But he got me to stop, and start eating right.
I cut down on soda. One a day.
And trying to not snack quite so much.
I had a mysterious illness a couple years ago,
And it shrank my stomach so i cant eat much for meals anyways now.
I cant finish a small meal at fast food places. =/
But yet i snack so much.
Anyways, This is what i looked like summer of 09, and now.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y109/jarori43/l_5a5370f1fad24335be9c206cd16d323e.jpg

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y109/jarori43/KittySlump119.jpg

Pretty similar, But i lost 2 inches on my waist, and 3 inches on my hips.
The only thing i havnt lost, is inches on my thighs. Which is what i want most.
And when i look at those 2 pictures, I still see a 140lb person with fat bulging everywhere. D;
I've been doing yoga on the wii fit, and treadmill as excersize.
I'm 5'6 for reference and i weigh about 122 now.
Sorry for long drawn out boo hoo-ness. ;~;

First of all I've read every post on this thread and am so proud of all of you! You are all amazing people! So much so that you have inspired me!

Ever since I was a child I've always considered myself as overweight; though when I look back through photos I really wasn't as big as I thought. But the teasing from school and family really didn't help the matter. By the age of 10 I had started with dieting... But like all crazy diets it didn't work.

Due to changesin health and the addition of medications I've been inceasing in weight for years. I never was an active child, I also had asthma that acted up when I was active..So that made it harder to do anything!

As I got older and had a major grow of intrest in fashion and cosplay I've wanted to lose weight more and more. I tried but always failed. But late last year I joined the local Curves with which I started to see some results but sadly around March-April it closed down so I lacked regular exercise and just gained everything back and then some. So it's been hard. A real struggle. But thankfully do to a drop in medication I have gradually started losing some weight. I used to be 252lbs and am 238-ish lbs (last time I weight myself) I am also 5'7-ish and I used to be nearly 5'9... So with my weight gain I have lost height. My father (a fitness freak) said that as you gain weight it can compress your spine causing you to shrink...Which SUCKS cause I loove being tall for a girl! xDDD

I know I don't look as heavy as my weight suggests but I'm still hateful to myself! >.<
But honestly reading everyones stories here has inspired me so much! You've all accomplished so much in such a short amount of time it's amazing!!! So I have decided that I am not going to make anymore excuses; I am going to work hard, eat better, and get that awesome body that I've always dreamed of! ... I want to finally see the beauty that everyone else does.
So thank you, everyone! I will most certainly keep updates on my progress!

So I've been reading all these stories, and along with my boyfriend, and these, I've regained my motivation to continue working out and lifting weights. I never thought I was heavy but got teased a lot for it in elementary school. I actually started doing something about it in my last years of Jr. High, all through high school and still up to today. I started at about 145 when I was beginning. I'm at about 125 or so now (I'm 5'4). I'd like to get to about 110 with good muscle and such. So here's what progress I do have.

If any of those pictures were from the phase when people were teasing you for being "overweight", then they are either nuts or were just jealous.

You are doing great, and its always good to hear about girls who recognize the benefits of lifting weights. Extra points if you do real squats.

While I think it is great to have a quantifiable goal, that once you reach it, you know you have reached it, I honestly think that the number on the scale shouldn't be the determining point, especially if you lift. Deciding on a body fat % or something like that may be more effective in the long run.

Keep up the great work!

While I think it is great to have a quantifiable goal, that once you reach it, you know you have reached it, I honestly think that the number on the scale shouldn't be the determining point, especially if you lift. Deciding on a body fat % or something like that may be more effective in the long run.

Keep up the great work!

Yeah you're right. I always forget that muscle weighs more. ^^; But thank you for your support and help!

Looking good!
I have pretty much the same goal as you, and I was wondering if you felt that it helped to take photos every day. I recently got a netbook with a webcam and I thought that photos might help me own up to my actions; both good and negative from choosing to skip the gym and do something else.

What do you guys think?

I agree with Kasinator, it was easier for me to take one every few weeks or so. I'd usually say I'd take one on this day, and this day of the month of each month. It worked out pretty well for me. :3

No progress pictures yet.
But here is me now.
The body I currently have is from constant sparring and parkour.
I'm planning on growing through my continuous (slowly growing intensive) martial arts training.
Not a big fan of having to take this and that. I'd rather train until i reach my peak,
and then my body will forcibly make me eat more.

Ummm.
Breakdancing, freerunning(Parkour, gymnastics), and martial arts?

My body is blegh, I want to look more like Jin Kazama from Tekken, now HIS body is a spectacle.

If i could suggest anything to make people lose weight,
It would have to be gymnastics.
Flipping (especially back tucks), makes your core insanely strong.
Also.
For cardio, you guys should either Shuffle, or break dance (NOT THE CRAZY MOVES. Don't think I mean headspins, I just mean like, six steps, and the basics. And I've seen people of all sizes do this, so don't think you can't!)
Seriously, doing bboy footwork consecutively for 5 minute will even make me sweat a lot, and I don't really sweat much. (only in gymnastics)
Just practice footwork like like 15 minutes a day. (for as long as you can before you take a break. Consecutive 30 seconds, or 45, or heck 2 minutes, then take a 1-2 minute break, and then get back on it.)
I was thinking of making a CosplayCamp training series on youtube, to give you all ideas on what to do to get more fit, and heck I'd even make the videos in cosplay related attire!
What do you guys think of the idea?

My back before.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q231/Giordanos/Bodyold017.jpg

At this point I had bulked up a fair bit (left) and then lost maybe...18lbs? (I can't really remember) for a contest. So this is just a before and after cutting picture. (About 10 weeks, I didn't give myself nearly enough time to diet for this show, although it was my first, so lesson learned!)

My avatar, a photo from said contest.
http://images.cosplay.com/photos/23/2355458.jpg

And this is me bulking back up again. I cant remember when this was taken, but a while after the contest.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q231/Giordanos/picbicep.jpg

I don't have any recent photos but honestly I don't look much different, I'm back to about 14% bodyfat. I've been struggling to gain both weight and strength recently. So I havn't made nearly as much progress as I should have from that contest last year. *sadface*

Anyway, that's me in a nutshell.

So I'll start my story by saying..

I've always been the fat girl. I knew how to hide, blend in and just disappear.

At just newly turned 24 years old, I was 210 pounds.

*OUCH*

To shy to cosplay or go to anime cons because I was so ashamed of my size.

So I decided to change..

Before..

I was a bridesmaid at a friend's wedding.

Groosssss!!

I started seeing a diet coach, eating right and working out and here I am at

160, 50 pounds gone in the same dress.

Since this imagine was taken, I've lost 16 more pounds and I am 14 pounds from goal of 130.

I am just joining a gym to lift weighs and training for a marathon.

I wish had I more dedication to work out, but then again, maybe lugging around a vibraphone can be considered 'weights' haha (it's really heavy, plus speakers x_x ;; yayy marching band/winter drumline season).

Recently, I've been trying to excersize, mostly those PE excersizes though, around 20 minutes before I go to sleep haha (sit ups, leg lifts, some yoga stuff etc..) Running kills me because of respiratory problems, so I try staying away from it still x_x ;;

I lost weight though! (can't tell if it's from stress or excersize LOL) Sadly it was from my gained weight of 124 back to 116... ;; my goal (as usual) is to get down to 110 = u = ;; hehe (time to stop eating like a mutant boar)

It's not so much not eating its what your eating. Fastfood is a big no no if you can discipline yourself stay away from potatoes or heavy starch type foods. I am asian so I still eat rice. Also bread is a hard factor for many people but if you can narrow down your diet to simple intakes of leans meats like chicken and fish youll see dramatic weight loss. This also includes softdrinks.

I used to be an avid 3 -5 sodas a day sort of person aswell as fast food for every meal. Even though I am not at 100% depriving myself of these types of foods limiting it is a keyfactor. I droped 30 pounds once I changed my diet and started exercising. Diet is the key.

For those who are looking for change its all about what you put in you mouth. Don't deprive your body of essential nutrition. Starving yourself can actually cause your body to make you even fatter because the food you do eat your body will hold onto those proteins and sugars and store them away turning it into fat.

I know alot of people hate it but exercise is also good for keeping your metabolism up. You'll be more tired and more hungry but youll be burning away those calories. Just dont starve yourself make sure your body is getting nutrition from food and maybe maybe some supplements; it depends on your diet.

keep telling yourself that Gahi your probably not in single digit fat% like I am your a pretty big guy but it depends what your goals are. It's good for you but if your trying to lose fat% and lose fat for cosplay its one of the more starchy foods/BAD carbs you could eat that turn into fat. And when I say Potatoes im mostly speaking about french fries.

Good carbs consist of things like brown rice or whole wheat pasta. The Bad carbs are things like french fries because of the starch and oils. Also saturated fats from foods are good to stay away from. Most of the fish I order from places I get grilled instead of deep fried. Even I occasionally have fries or w/e junk food you could name but I do this on rare occassions.

This link probably explains it better than I do about potatoes but whole skin thing is fine like you said Ghai

carbs are fine as long as you regulate your diet with a lot of fiber, fiber supplements and oatmeal helps a lot, as long as your not eating a box of count chocula you should be ok. remember it' good to avoid carbs in a usual sense, but over cutting your carbs can cause diebetic shock. Personally unless your going to compete I would say eat some simple carbs too even if it's french fries every once in a while but trying to keep it before or after workouts is generally a good idea.

Went through this thread again. Definitely very inspiring. Keep up the good work!

Got fed up with my relatively poor health (among some other reasons) and the extra weight, so I did some cardio last night. Once you get over the heart throbbing to heart pounding boundary, it's really not that bad. Doesn't take much time, so on the days I'm short on time, I can still do cardio. On the days I have more time, I figure I'll work on some other type of exercise.

200lbs in my Cosplay pics, currently 190lbs, goal is 160lbs by June. Results vary from person to person, but the possibility is there so I might as well give it a shot.

Wow, some of those success stories are really amazing. Especially seeing the before/after pictures. It often feels like seeing those weight loss ads where the 2 people are entirely different folks (No, that's not a bad thing :P)

I've started training lately to at least put a little bulk (As opposed to most men, I don't want lots of muscles, just a bit of tone since I'm scrawny :/)

@dustbunny : There's no question you succeeded, how long did it take you to go from A to B? (If you don't mind answering, of course)

You wanted results and you got them pretty quick --- you likely worked hard for them.

This thread encourages me to actually retry the gym thing, although I don't know if I can still get a discount via my job.

Seeing that folks have got results (Though in my case it's not exactly weight loss I aim at), it gives me reason to believe working out actually gives something in the end.

Thanks to all for the success stories :)

Figured I'd post this in the proper section. ;) Here's an update from the photos that were posted on the first page of this thread!

I decided to start cosplaying back in November of 2009, with my first costume being Abbey Chase from J. Scott Campbell's "Danger Girl" series.

I weighed around one hundred thirty-five pounds at the time, and I wanted to begin an exercise routine to build a little muscle and lose a few inches in order to do Abbey justice (since spandex pants and a crop top aren't particularly forgiving). When a Planet Fitness opened nearby on December 28th of that year, I made a commitment to start working out roughly once every three days, or ten times per month.

It's now December of 2010. In less than a year, I've lost -- and kept off -- just under twenty-five pounds as well as shed inches all over. Last month, I went back to the same resort where I shot my first Abbey Chase photos (in version one of the costume; I'm now on version three) to take some new pictures for comparison's sake.

See for yourself the difference a year makes!

@dustbunny Thats awsome! quite the inspiration I must say. I used to run track & field but after HS I jumped the weight wagon that college provides and gained 40 pounds of basicly pure fat... But now I slimed all that off and lost 30 pounds and gained some nice muscle.

I was pretty skinny to begin with but I looked very unhealthy after 3 years of fast food and no exercise... I'm quite happy with my results and plan to even go further with gaining some more muscle and looking more cut =). Again you are quite the inspiration that alot of people should follow!

In all honestly its not that hard of a thing to do once you put your mind at at. What I found to work best is make a desison and stick to it. THe day I started I stopped eating heavy carbs later in the day, and started doing Cardio, and being the dork I an, it was DDR(I don't know how many Pads I when't threw..) Ate from 3 times a day to 5 smaller meals, and lifted weights. and I'm a wee bit crazy, when ever I'd be sitting down doing nothing, a little voice in the back of my head would say "You know...if you where excersinging it would be better for you..."(Forgive poor spelling) So I'd start doing DDR or push ups and sit ups or something. and when I whent out with friends I'd order something bad, and then I'd stop myself form eating it(Friends loved it because they got the food). And Also You cant pay much attion to the scale if your lifting weights. just have to know what your doing is right and not cheating yourself with bad foods. looking at the scale too much can be dishearting.

All your success stories make me really want to start losing the weight I always wanted to lose!! :< Right now I am 5'6" at around 145lbs. I haven't weighed myself in a while, but I know I gained weight this semester.

Here is a somewhat recent photo. It was from Comic Con 2010
http://www.acparadise.com/acp/picview.php?p=n3246_410319 (I am Misty (orange hair))

I want to tone my arms, stomach, and legs. I been in a size 11 in pants for years and i want to at least get into a 9! A 7 would be my goal. I would like to be around 130 pounds and would like to lose inches. Also my face used to be slimmer. At the lowest I been at this height I was 138.

Everyone says I'm "fine," or "slim" but I know I could be in better shape!

I am going to start this week!

so my abs have been completed :'D

or well, to the point where I'm satisfied.

Went from this:
http://i56.tinypic.com/72ya00.jpg (I've always had nice abdominals from dance just...they weren't defined enough)

to this :D

http://i52.tinypic.com/2lw27ir.jpg

EDIT: and that transformation took about maybe...not even 2 months, but that's because I'm so low on body fat that there's really nothing to lose in order to have muscle show.

and now :D

Step Two commences, To work on my chest/arms/back :'D(for I am actually...quite quite twiggy aside from my abs/legs.)

So I just started working out and such so I don't have much of a physical success story, but I feel it is successful none the less.

My little brother and I don't get along at all. He's the football jock, a "popular" kid. He thinks anime/cosplay/anything-he-doesn't-like is dorky or nerdy (and not nerdy in the good way). Over the years the rift between us has grown even bigger and we barely talk to each other, and if we do it usually ends in an argument. He sometimes does the pretend punch thing and then do "two for flinching". He never does it particularly hard. He did it yesterday before bed (the first day that I started my workout) and it hurt more than usual because my muscles were sore. I said "Ow!" (which I normally never do) and he asked me in a you're-an-idiot-that-didn't-hurt voice "What's the matter with you?" and I told him I had started working out to get in shape and he was generally surprised and asked me all I did and even showed me how to modify one of the exercises since I couldn't figure out how to do it. And showed me an easier way to do one of them (cause I almost kept falling over). It was generally the longest and nicest conversation I've had with him in a while.

I call that a success story!

^_^ I was at An estimated 320, and am now at about 200 So i'm not 100% How much i lost but I also gain a good bit of muscle ^_^; So I don't really know, And sadly I still have about 20 pounds to lose till I'm out of the fat category. Damn BMI...

Please, please do not go by the BMI. It is old outdated and highly in accurate portrayal of someones health.

My own quick success story. I would be considered a "hard gainer" by the fitness world and have a helluva hard time gaining muscle. I had never weighed more than 168lbs in HS and as a football player that's too light. Last year i went from 154lbs to 178lbs from February 1st-may 10th. I got surgery on my knee the 14th and not long answer I worked my way up to 185lbs.

Back to the BMI and it's failures. At 5'10" 185 my BMI was 26.5. between 25-29.9 is considered over weight. I've had the same waist size since I was 14 or 15 and I'm 21 now. Obviously I wasn't over weight. There are body fat percentage testers (http://www.amazon.com/Omron-HBF-306C-Loss-Monitor-Black/dp/B000FYZMYK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1292460824&sr=8-2) for about $30 that are pretty accurate.

I've lost some muscle since then I'm down to some where around 170lbs. After this week I'm going to be training hard again, so hopefully in a few months I'll have another success story and some pics to go along.

Hi
i think you could loose some weight if you want, but for now you could do 1 things:

1. do some exercises;
2. draw some musles;
3. pose correctly

1. you should exercise always, but if you work out the day before your musles would be a lil bit plumped.

2. yep! I'm not kidding. You should you a darker shade than your skin tone to drawn musles on you body, arms and back (neck, legs etc...) i show how in this post:
http://h-sama.blogspot.com/2010/12/como-fazer-musculos-de-maquiagem.html
(http://h-sama.blogspot.com/2010/12/como-fazer-musculos-de-maquiagem.html)

3. i don't know you and please don't be offended. you and many other people do that.
With your shoulders down or forward you look laisy in pictures... there for, chubby

pull you shoulders back, suck in your tummy, stright up your spine, almost army posture.
keep that in mind and begin now.

i bet you would tell the results in your next picture!!

WOW, what height are you? You look fine as you are!!! (oh nvm...went up and re-read XD)

I am 5'2 and about 135-139 lbs and still look SUPER fat...so I am jealous. (though our height differences might have some to do with it, and I also know that all my extra weight is just fat..srsly. xD)

But if you decide to still try to lose some weight, good luck <3 Tho I still think you look fine as you are !

I'm not quite where I want to be yet (I'm still working on toning now), but I do want to share how much weight watchers has helped me. I know a few other people are using that program, and its the only one that has actually worked for me. I started off at 172-175 pounds, which is what I was in my first photo. The second photo is me as of June, and the third is me just last month, at my current weight now of 138. The difference, especially in the arms and face (especially the face) is huge. I'm wearing corsets in two of the photos, so its hard to see how out of shape I was other than arms and face, but if it says anything, I've dropped 4 or 5 corset sizes between when I started and where I am now.

My other main "success" I suppose you could say, is that with dropping to excess weight (I was at least 30 pounds over weight) is that I'm not having nearly as many back problems as I used to have, and my strength is improving every week (yay weight training at the gym).

Miss...Are you saying and Drew my Muscles on me? For one thing, the Boulder pose is holding someone on my shoulder, and raising the other? and the other, the Bumi my shoulder's are puller back to elongate my neck to show the muscles. I did not use makeup on my body to fake muscles, Nor Photo shop. That is very upsetting, I know many would do so to boost, but I spent a good part of my life being a obese, and I would applicate you not assuming I'd cheat just to boost to people on the internet that I don't know. I posted to show it could be done, and hope that it would inspire others to do the same, not fake it. Now I think I've been very good about how I phrase this so far, and I know you said not to be offended, but I have been, So Please don't be offended when I say this...

You guys should probably read a little more carefully before jumping down someone's throat. not saying that the advice is really called for, as you looked great for both Bumi and the Boulder, but please note that H-sama said you "should", not that you "did"

yep! I'm not kidding. You should you a darker shade than your skin tone to drawn musles on you body,

I think all s/he was trying to do was give you a tip on how to make muscles even more defined, if you felt that they weren't defined enough.

Rjr3412

k1k2 - I think the language difference may have been a little to blame there. It seemed, when I read it, that it was somewhat complimentary, and offered some suggestions of how to take the changes you have made so far and make them appear even more impactful in photos.

I've seen some really impressive air-paint type stuff that makes someone who would otherwise appear skinny and flat, as rather ripped. Think 300 make-up.

Far too often language difference or even just the lack of tone of voice can make things written on boards seem far harsher than intended.

Great job by the way!

Ryoko-and-Yami : Yep I was at SDCC 08 and 09, thats probly where you saw the Boulder cosplay.

Elycium and Rhr3412 : I thought as much, hence my retraction, still the manner in which I read it still feels more like she was saying thats what I had done. Like I had said, I haven't done much with my life but being able to do that is one of my few prides. So when I read it and it seemed accusing, I was somewhat upset.

Here's my before pic, some times around Spring 2009. I'm dressed in traditional Cambodian costume, something I had to wear to please my mother in a family portrait. *sighs* I thought I was going to start crying or just die from lack of oxygen. That blouse did not fit me any where. You know you're unacceptably fat when you have to be safety-pinned into the biggest blouse they have and you can't wear a bra because it's bulky, and they'd used up their entire supply of safety pins! :(

Side View (http://i598.photobucket.com/albums/tt69/Mucilinda/traditional01-1.jpg) with a traditional, obedient pose. Obviously, my mother's favorite photo. Ever.

Okay, I admit it, I thought I was bootylicious. My ass was big and round and could stop traffic. But various doctors said, "You need to reduce your breast size or your spine will be even more damaged." I cared but not really. :/ I mean if it's already damaged, it's not like I can reverse that, right? (<--moron) It wasn't until I couldn't walk a block without feeling like coughing up a lung that I finally took exercising seriously. And of course, my lovely ass is gone.:waaaah:

I've been exercising vigorously 4 out of 7 days for the past 5 months. Usually 30 minutes every three hours because I work alone for 8 to 10 hours straight sitting in a windowless, locked box with 10 TVs and a bunch of cameras. The result this December:

That dark shirt I'm wearing is from my 11 year old nephew. It was passed down from his 13 year old bro. I was amazed to the point of speechlessness when I put it on and my breasts wasn't stretching the letters out. :D My goal is my old 28E bra, 24" waist and 33" hips. Almost there, and I'm wearing my size 3 skinny jeans that I haven't been able to wear in 5 years!!! And I lost an inch around my biceps! I find myself flexing my arms in the windows as I jog by and getting weird looks from patrons inside the shops. *laughs* I'm like, "Oh gawd, muscles! MUSCLES!"

I know I should have done some weight training in the very beginning but my financial situation was horrible. Now I'm hoping to either join a gym or acquire a set of weights from a friend. Whichever works best for me. I've never tried lifting weights so this will be exciting.

I meant to say I've never tried lifting traditional weights. I've improvised with everything in the house though like books, water bottles, gallon milk jugs and so on.

I'll be posting some pictures in January. I haven't cosplayed since I lost about 30lbs (Almost 40 from where I was in 2005). I'm at my halfway point right now. I'm trying to lose the other half in the next year. My goal is somewhere between 130-140, down from about 205. I'm finding it better for me and my body to just do it slowly and gradually. I don't really have a desire to be thin and tiny, or look hot in cosplay. But I just want to be in better shape and in better health. Plus it's a challenge for myself, just to see if I could do it.

Once I reach my goal, I want to redo an old costume I did at 190lbs for an awesome comparison!

Congrats to all of you! Lately I have been feeling a bit self-conscious about my ability to actually lose weight and tone muscle. I am 5'5 sitting at approx 187lbs. >.< I used to work out in tae kwon do 5-6 nights a week when I was in highschool, but then I moved away to college and away from my school. I got overly stressed, had hypothyroid, and some horrible situations happened that became out of my control. My work quit giving me hours so I have been struggling to pick myself back up. I was at 115lbs in highschool, then when I hit college after a year I was at 137lbs. My friends like to eat out, and because it is easier than cooking every night, my friends will spot me a meal at Denny's. A year ago I was 153lbs. Now Im at my worst.

Good news? I recently started back in tae kwon do (Something I absolutely love and is a hobby as well as workout for me), started eating better as well. I have bad habits of eating when Im bored or stressed, and I am cutting back on eating out. I am also stocking up on protein and meal replacement bars, so when I DO have cravings for munchies, I can just nom on a bar every now and then. OR, if I get the munchy cravings, I will go for a walk with my dog and room mates.

I also have been walking my dog at least 3 times a night, and me and my room mates will go around the block a couple times. We are also going to start walking the 2.4 miles to and from school everyday instead of driving. (School is out for the holidays)

I havent yet weighed myself, since I only just started to kick myself of my unhealthy habits. I really didnt notice my weight gain until I realized that costumes that I made only recently dont fit anymore!! D: So I have to change that! I want to lose SOMETHING and tone a bit before March 2011 because I have KawaKon, and my cosplay group is hosting a Kuroshitsuji Social Ball. I am cosplaying Ciel, so I want to slim down a LOT (as much as realistically possible for me) by that time.

I havent been too confident in losing anything, because my family has a history of obesity. My late grandma was 6' at 400lbs, my mom is at 205lbs, and my other grandma is around 400lbs as well. With a history of diabetes as well. My mom started losing a little weight because she had to have her gall bladder removed. I have to get my gall bladder checked too, because I have been having problems with it before my mom even had hers removed. Which is also a BIG motivating factor for me to start eating healthier too. I am also big boned, so it seems nearly impossible for me to lose a lot. T__T I feel like Im destined to look big no matter what I do. I want to have a small feminine frame, but I know that it may be impossible. Im too curvy. >.<

My other motivating factor is that I will be going to Japan in May to do research on Human Rights, and also research for my cosplay book that I want to publish. After I return home at the end of May, I will be going back to Japan to study for an academic year and then to London to study for 6 weeks. Im hoping that I will also lose weight while I am in Japan in addition to what I want to lose here.

Im hoping that it is still even possible for me to lose, and after seeing some of these stories (I have read all of the posts in this forum), I am inspired to try my hardest again. I hope to post updates by KawaKon.

Is it possible to look pretty and thin with big bones and curves?????????

Rogue - Something very important stood out in your description. Hypothyroid. If this is true, accurate and confirmed by a doctor, the process that you need to take to get into shape can be very different than the standard advice you will usually find.

First off, if you are suffering a thyroid condition, and are not on appropriate medication, you can expect very little success. However with proper medication, and an altered diet you can be quite successful.

If on the other hand, it is an excuse, and you see obesity in your family as a reason, while it may cause a predisposition, it is certainly not an insurmountable obstacle. Tons of people lose weight from staggering starting points, and transform themselves into very healthy fit individuals.

So best of luck, and make the changes that you need to make!

Well, I managed to drop from 295 to 275 once this year, but got too focused on studying and went back up. Determined to get back on track now that were on break, I ended up getting something messed up with my stomach and wasn't able to eat without sever stomach pain. I've dropped over twelve pounds in the last two weeks because I eat less than my 110 girlfriend now =\. It's been a good thing though, I'm only able to eat small portions and usually only healthy food. Any grease makes me gag now.

Here's hoping to be down to the 260's or lower by feb!

Oh PS, yes I've been to the doctor and have pills that allow me to eat without dying =D

The doctor's caught the thyroid condition after I started taking birth control to control my acne and my time of month, which would last on average 2 weeks with a 2 week break. It was horrible. They put me on medication for it, though, and after I quit taking the birth control my condition was a little better. But my body required really weird combination of medication because Im taking other medication for my epilepsy. My doctor thinks that the combination of chemicals had something to do with my thyroid problem. But we are not exactly sure. @.@

I think it is mostly fear than an excuse though, about the obesity in my family. Lately Ive not been too confident, and I'm starting to get tired of the no confidence. I know it is possible, so I am actually not sure why I'm so scared. Though now I am actually DOING something about it, than being too scared to actually do something.

I need to go to the doctor when I get home (on vacation at the moment in another state), and I'm going to see about getting something done about my gall bladder. I'm having trouble keeping down certain foods (especially greasy/acidic/fast foods though lately Ive been avoiding them). I am tired of being sick after I eat, and last night was a nightmare. I was dumb and had Taco Bell on the way out of town, and I was up until 2am getting sick. Made the drive nearly unbearable! >.< Though I have been eating a lot healthier recently, there are still foods that my body isn't doing well with, and sometimes I have set backs when I cant get to a kitchen. I have thought, and it could be allergies too.

I'm going to definitely take your advice and talk to my doctor about how I should go about getting healthier and losing weight in coordination with my thyroid condition and possibly gall bladder issue. (We are pretty certain its gall bladder. My friend has had her gall bladder removed a few years ago after having 2 years of problems, so she knows the signs and my mom just had hers removed two weeks ago. My doctor wants me checked anyway because its hereditary.)

I think if I get in shape more, and start taking care of myself more, then I will probably be much healthier, and much happier.

I trained for a half marathon this fall and ran it in January at 2:03. Ten minutes faster than my previous PR. So I'm pretty stoked about that. I have also been doing body weight exercise to try and buff up a bit. When I started this in September I could only do sets of 10 regular push ups. Now I'm doing sets of 20.
These are more like progress pics, but I'm happy with what I have done so far.

Here is a before picture from this summer. My arms were very soft

Regrettably, I don't have any such pictures of myself or anything like that from before I started working out.

But I had to do a bit of trimming to make a good Liquid Snake for Ohayocon, which was about two weeks ago. I'd already built up substantial muscle mass. Turned out well, in my opinion. In terms of numbers, I reduced my weight by about 25 pounds. It was surprisingly easy, once I figured out how to do it.

I wanna do it again at Anime Central, but my experience at Ohayocon taught me two things. 1. I need a little, tiny, bit of a tan so I'm not white as a ghost. 2. I need a better wig for Liquid. (Anyone know of any good wigs?)

I've still got some to go, but I'm proud of myself. No fancy diet, no spectacular exercise program. Just eating better and making an effort to get 30 minutes of exercise (whether it's yoga, weights or just chasing my baby girl around) at least 5 times a week.

Oh there is alot of loss storys but not many gains, i guess i can contribute~

Went from 115 to 150 in about a year while maintaining a low Body fat~
For me it was all about tons of protein and working out properly. 6 times a week while breaking my workout into 3 sets. Chest/back, Arms, then legs and repeat so i did each set twice a week with sundays as a break. Abs everyday :3

The left is now one entire cup size bigger than the right. >_< I just knew this was going to happen. They've always been uneven. Oh, and I lost 1 inch from my chest, going from 34.5 to 33.5. YES!! All the other measurements are still the same so I have no clue why my stomach looks so flat...I must be standing up straighter or something.

Well, last year I was 200lbs, had a 45 inch waist and couldn't even pull off a heavy character because I was so ashamed. But I started a diet and work out last september and now I've lost 75lbs, 16 inches off my waist and am preparing to cosplay as Jaina Proudmoore from World of Warcraft, Harley Quinn in her Arkham Asylum outfit and Odette from The Swan Princess. I still have a few more pounds to lose and inches too, but the good news is my con of choice is Otakon, so I have till July to lose three more inches off my waist and I have not stopped my diet or work out plan.

I was fat child who became a fat teenager, then a chubby college kid. I was sick and tired of being over weight. That was a number of years ago now haha, I'm 27 and thin now though, like most women, I still think I could lose 5 pounds.

Starting weight was about 230 (5"6); I wore a size 42 pant.
Current weight is 155; I wear a size 30 pant.

Cosplay was a get help to me, it made me want to lose weight and exercise. I was so limited in what I was willing to cosplay when I first started but now nothing seems impossible. I started a thread way back when that is still kicking around and very active on this forum actually. I am also impressed by the number of people cosplay can motivate.

Congratulations on the 5 lbs! 10 lbs sounds very do-able. I hope you post your progress in the exercise boot camp (http://www.cosplay.com/showthread.php?t=226872) thread.

I remembered when I started out I unrealistically announced I wanted to lose 10 lbs in 2 weeks. What an embarrassing memory.

Thank you ^u^ I found this thread very inspiring and I think if I can not only get support but also see success stories I can do this. I have a bad knee injury which makes exercise hard to do, but I am ready to try. I will also be posting pictures. I have tried to loose weight before but I have never been this motivated to do so! I'll be posting pictures soon.

My word madam...do you have an before and after photo? thats a lot in one year! How much mroe do you have to losse? you should be at about 125...?
Yes, I do. Unfortunately the after photo isn't entirely recent and also unfortunately some of the weight I lost because I've had the flu twice this year, but most of it was my hard work building up a workout program and diet plan. I am five feet tall, so to be healthy, I have at least another fifteen or twenty pounds, though I'm not sure because my bust and hips are naturally large and really only my belly is what I've been slimming.

Before (http://i585.photobucket.com/albums/ss295/MagdaleneDaae/SweetMags.jpg) Note also that the corset I wore was keeping a lot of the rolls hidden.

After (http://i585.photobucket.com/albums/ss295/MagdaleneDaae/Brytefat001-1.jpg) But I'll have a more recent image up when I'm over the flu and don't look like a snot dripping Silent Hill monster.

Thanks so much! The work outs have been a lot of hard work but I was so proud when I saw how they were paying off.

To be perfectly honest, I think its the greatest feeling in the world to be able to be see and feel what your doing is right.

Also you've done a great job ^_^

I got a tape measure (that isn't metal, lol) but now I'm wondering if I'm measuring myself right. I got 39" bust, 36" waist, and 45" hip. The waist is the smallest area of torso, right? I'm still at 206 lbs and now a 36" waist seems too small for my weight.

Air Force Based out of Holloman AFB New Mexico. The only Plus side to this place is that theres so little to do that it makes you want to work out and get more in shape.

I'd heard that about military bases, my dad and half his friends are Marines.

Nothing definite yet, but I think it would be awesome to do a Fitness board meet-up at Otakon :)

Well, I just wanted to post that after two years, I finally have ran twenty minutes on the treadmill without needing my inhaler. It was tedious and took forever to retrain my lungs how not to freak-out( yes I was careful, public use of inhaler is not my thing) BUT I RAN! AHAH! WOOOOO! YESHHHHH! HAZZAH. V-I-C-T-O-R-Y! GOAL! SCORE! BOOYAHHH!

And damn did it feel great.

Ahah, thanks guys. C:

Yeah, it kicked in just in time, like in one winter, I just lost everything without even changing much of my diet, although, now, I try and eat better just for the sake of heath.

Ah, no, I wore that Cosplay to Otakuthon('10). I'm pretty proud of it.
