I'm doing Weight Watchers w/out enrolling in the program. The two things I am missing out on are the weekly weigh ins and meetings. I thought that we (as in us cosplayers) could use a thread to use as our weigh in. Once a week (day of your choice) write in your weight and how much you lost/gained. I've been told that the weigh in was an important part of the program because it held you accountable for your habits the previous week.

So I'll start:

Current weight: 145 lbs. Down 3 lbs. (weight taken on Monday)
Start weight: 150 lbs.
Goal weight: 135 lbs.

I would not disclose this kind of info I weren't so comfortable here. Luckily, I am, and this seems like a really good idea.

Current weight: 228.5 Down 8.5 lbs.
Start weight: 237 lbs
Goal weight: 150 lbs

Current Weight: 171

goal weight: 130

Current Weight: 55 kilos (121 lbs, BMI 20.8)
Start weight: 62 kilos (136.4 lbs, BMI 23.4)
Goal weight: 52 kilos (114.4 lbs, BMI 19.6)

And yes, damn it, it's healthy. Anything between a BMI of 18.5 and 24.9 is in the "normal" range.

Next mission is about a bajillion sit ups to deal with the belly pouch.

Hmm, I guess I'll post.

Current Weight : 194
Start Weight : ~240
Goal Weight : 150
Body fat % lost : Started @ 43% --- 34% as of today. Goal = ~15-20%
I prefer to pay attention to my body fat %/how clothes fit me as opposed to weight. Weight is important but too many variables are presented. I still weigh in once a week but I don't get upset anymore if it hasn't gone down much.

I'm 5' .5". I weighed about 110 in April of last year...I gained 10 pounds in 1 month cuz I was going to go to BCT and didnt want to miss the junk food so I ate and ate. Horrible, I know. So far things are going good and I hope to be 110 by March.

Wow! Good job everyone! This is pretty awesome! I joined weight watchers a few weeks ago but I haven't had the chance to weigh in for the past two weeks, so this is awesome (and helpful to keep me motivated going forward).

Last time I weighed was two weeks ago, but

my start weight was: 196

my current weight (as of October 22): 191

my goal weight: 135

Though my first goal is just to lose twenty pounds. I would weigh now, but there are absolutely no scales around here!

11-06-2010, 06:13 AM
Currently I'm aiming to gain a couple of pounds muscle, so I guess my BMI would increase but not in an unhealthy way.

I'm like 5'9,7" or there around
Start: 60kg/133lbs (BMI: 19ish)
Current: 63kg/138lbs (BMI: 20)
Goal: ~66kg/145 pounds (BMI: 22ish).Probably higher, but with very little fat all the same.

Aiming to gain weight. Well, it's not a joke, I recently started working out, about 3+ times at the gym per week so it would be weird not to go up in weight. By summer next year I'm aiming for manly muscles ^^

kuma133
11-17-2010, 04:39 PM
Starting: 402 lbs
Current: 348lbs
Goal: Not weight related!

Working towards general health and fitness. No single big change (beyond committing to get it done.) The rest has been a series of small changes combined with some education.

Changes:
No Pop / No Juice
Lots and lots of water
More protien. Protien at every snack/meal. (No, not talking about Atkins extremes!)
More fibre.
More veg. and fruit.
Never eat a meal when you're hungry! (Eat a snack, preferably protien and wait 15-20 before having your meal! --- It works!)
Tracking tools (calorie-count.about.com, etc.)
Education
Reduced/watching simple carbs > Replace with Complex carbs to help
Eat snacks (stomach never empty)
Portion Control / Pre-planning / Pre-portioning -- A little extra prep work makes life easy later!
Excercise

I love what I'm doing. I love what I'm eating. I just don't want to eat that bad stuff anymore. Because I've carefully chosen all the good stuff I eat now. I eat better. I'm not hungry. I'm less tired. I chose my fitness activities. So it's not so hard to make myself go because I enjoy it. Sure sometimes it's a chore to work out. But if it's something you love doing, it's a whole lot easier.

If you've ever had your doctor say to you: "Eat Less / Exercise More." They are WRONG! It's one tiny little error, but it makes a WORLD of difference!

It should be: "Eat BETTER / Excerise More."

How many times have felt you've been good all day long, only to come home and turn into some kind of ravenous fridge and cupboard raiding monster? Truth is, you were probably not taking in enough of the right things during the day. So when you came home, your body went into full-on craving mode because you starved it all day long!

Starting weight : if I remeber correctly I was between 269-270...
Weight Lost: ... Haven't weighed myself
Goal weight : 200- 150 pounds

But lately .. I have been cheating on myself with foods.. what should I do .. every time my parents and I go to the store we always buy pop .. I have been trying to break myself away from pop by drinking, milk, gatorade or water .. but if I go to Burger King or some where to eat I order Diet Pop .. How can I curve this craving for it and My other problem is portion control .. I have tried also just drinking gatorade and eatting Peanut Butter ... that didn't work ... What should I do ....

Good news though is My family is joining the local Community center the first of the month to help with exercising and things.

I've been working out on and off for about..almost two years now. :x Which is sad, I should have reached my goal by then...but I haven't.

Start: 170 (Nov o9)
Current: 138 (nov 1o)
Goal: 110-120 lbs (hopefully Jan 11)

I usually stick to exercising for...maximum two weeks, slip up a day, and then tell myself, I'll start up again, and I never do. I don't eat much, but with my body type, I HAVE to work out to see results. I do about 30-60minutes of cardio a day, breaking it up into 10 minute segments throughout the day. I also lift weights, working different body parts every day.

I didn't post for last weeks weigh in, so this week I have two. I'm kind of confused about my weight loss though.

Last week:
Start weight: 130.5lbs
Current weight: 130.5lbs
Goal weight: 113lbs

This week:
Start weight: 130.5lbs
Current weight: 128.5lbs
Goal weight: 113lbs

What confuses me is that the first week I ate completely vegan - carrots, lettuce, etc. and I exercised 5 days out of 7. But I didn't lose a pound. Then the second week, I lost some of my drive. I only worked out 2 days, and I ate a lot of cake and junk food. My weigh in day was the day after Thanksgiving, during which I stuffed myself with turkey, gravy, and stuffing. So how did I lose weight the second week but not the first? >.< And does this mean cake makes you lose weight? XD

The short answer is that often when you first start to burn fat the body doesn't want to change. Often you will retain water, so even though your body fat is going down your weight does not. What will be effective for many people is something called carb cycling, or basically eating a greater deal of carbs for one day, (this is usually more controlled then a binge) but it allows the body to drop the water.

I myself looked great the day after Thanksgiving despite all those tasty tasty brownies.

Try to stick with clean eating, make sure you eat enough, and no cake is not a a great diet plan.

Mostly waste loss, unfortunately. All I did was avoid trips to BurgerKing (-3 to -6 burgers/week) and cut down on vending machine food. I'll have a bit more time to exercise over the next several weeks, so the greatest impact should be seen over the next month or so.

Just going to post my progress since October 26th since I'm strictly going by the scale at the gym rather than mine at home for more consistency. October is also when I started working with a personal trainer while adding more cardio/fitness classes.

Start : 243lbs (42% Body Fat :/) - April of 2010
October : 203lbs (37% Body Fat)
Current : 190lbs (30.5% Body Fat) - As of today

I've been trying on and off to get into a routine for a couple of years now but with no support from my Dad (don't get me wrong, he thinks its a good idea to lose weight, and he knows we could both succeed if we both, you know, actually tried, and that it would help manage his type 1 diabetes, but he doesn't wanna do the work) I haven't been able to maintain any kind of significant loss. I don't have the means to get the really detailed info, like BMI or body fat percentage, but I can't imagine that what its at is healthy. Maybe you guys can help kick me in the pants!

Height: 5'7.5"
Starting Weight: ~235-240 lbs (Early 2009, as I started cooking school)
Current Weight: 208.8 lbs (as of last Saturday, 12/18, but I suppose I could call this "starting")
Overall Goal Weight: 120-150 lbs, whichever is healthiest/looks nicest
Short-Term Goal Weight: 180-190 lbs, is February/March a reasonable timetable to lose 20 lbs?
Starting Dress Size: 18
Current Dress Size: 14/16 (depending on the material/cut/store bought from, etc)

My scale is a little bit off, I just don't know by how much or which way, but it's the only one I use, so I hope that my numbers are consistent. I lost the first 20 lbs over last year just by switching to recommended portion sizes with a little bit of healthier stuff thrown in. My problem is: I have limited access to a gym, no access to a doctor or personal trainer, limited funds to get healthy produce, and I live with someone who just isn't that serious about getting healthier. Any advice for trying to do this under these conditions?

HomeDepot
12-23-2010, 05:04 PM
Don't worry Serah. The numbers on the scale can be really misleading. If you just started working out then your body has been building muscle, so even though you've lost some fat there is no net weight change. Weight loss is seldom steady and even. I will loose five pounds in two weeks and then stay the same weight for months. If you are stepping up the intensity of your workouts every week or so, then you are getting healthier, and if you are healthy the weight will come off with time.

Serah
12-23-2010, 05:41 PM
oh good^^ I can say that I can definitely tell that my muscles are stronger (I can do push-ups now XD). And I have been increasing the intensity as soon as i think something is too easy.

I'm so happy to hear that this is normal, I was really worried >.>

Personally I find this thread ridiculous. Weight is an okay goal to have but I'm targeting fat, not weight. So if I can manage to lose 5 pounds of fat by the end of January I'll be happy. Unfortunately for weight freaks this means I'll go UP that much. My muscle mass is designed horribly and you would be surprised by how weak I am.

this is going to be a little backwards but I'm trying to gain weight. Of course it's lean muscle mass, but for some people gaining weight is just as hard as it is for others to lose it. I'm looking to gain between 1-3lbs a week.

Current Weight: 166.4
Goal Wight: 185

I've been at that weight before but it's incredibly hard for me to maintain. I'm looking to get there early in the year and maintain for the rest. In reality I want to be somewhere between 180-190lbs I'm not sure where I'll be satisfied because it's about perception where will I look how I want to? I'm not sure.

Height: 6 ft
Starting weight: 190-195

I've been watching what I eat very closely, walking more, and wii fit... I really wanted to start lifting weights again but I seriously strained my back muscle a few months ago, so i'm slighty scared too.

The major problem I have is 'thunder thighs', which I got from my Mom who's been less than 145 and still had them. I tried to get rid of them when I was younger, using a stationary bike, but it didn't work.

Energy-draining stretches. I've tried getting rid of them with cardio and it doesn't help. It's about what you do before your exercise routine that determines this.

Unfortunately, you cannot spot train away fat. As much as infomercials would love to have you believe that you can target any specific "problem area" of your body, and get the thighs/butt/abs of your dreams by exercises targeted to work the excess fat away from that area - that is not how your body actually works.

Targeting your legs with cardio/weight-training will help to build up your leg muscles which in the long term will give you the definition you want. However, you cannot simply work away the fat deposits from your thighs - you need to work on bringing the overall volume of fat throughout your entire body down. Calculate your BMI - you can find sites that will do this for you by googling the phrase "calculate my BMI" - and then work on bringing that number into line with where you want it to be. Running is probably one of the best exercises you can do as it works essentially all the muscles of your body. So, congrats to you on selecting a good method of training. However, don't get discouraged when, despite working vigorously on your legs for weeks they show little improvement. Track your BMI, and trust that as you improve that number your legs will eventually get where you want them to be. Although you may have short term goals like getting in shape to cosplay a certain character, be conscious of the fact that longterm health is the most important and that getting in shape does not happen over night. More than 50% of people drop out of their exercise routines by week 6 - don't let this be you. Stay committed and you can achieve your goals!

As I reread through this I realize that I used the word "fat" repeatedly, please do not take it to mean I am passing judgement on you - I am simply referring to it in the biological sense of what is going on. Good luck!

BMI is utterly useless on an individual level, though -- wasn't it designed for looking at large samples of people? For example my BMI is ALWAYS higher than it should be, because I have a very broad skeletal build and thus weigh more proportionate to my height. And for those who have a lot of muscle on them, it'll also register high. You can also have a low BMI and be terribly out of shape.

I'd recommend going and having a trainer at a local gym calculate your body fat percentage instead. That's on my to-do list in the coming week, actually. Monitoring that will tell you whether you're losing fat. After all, you could just diet heavily and your BMI would drop as your body started consuming muscle tissue.

Height: 5'-3"
Start weight: ~142
Goal weight: 125
Current weight: ~142

I just had surgery, so I can't stand on both feet, meaning my start weight is a bit of a guess. It's gone up from the 135 I had before surgery, boo. :( Exercise is basically impossible right now, aside from the stupid arm bike.

Goal weight doesn't really account for muscles. I'd be fine weighing 140, if it were muscle weight rather than fat. I'm just not sure how much I can reasonably expect to build up.

Sorry PB&J but your statement is false. BMI is not utterly useless. While it does experience some problems at the outer limits of the spectrum - which you may very well be a case of - for the vast majority of people it DOES give a fairly accurate idea of where they are insofar as their ratio of weight to height which can be used to determine progress over time. Going to a fitness center and getting your body fat percentage taken is a good idea - however for people who want to be able to measure their own progress, this is not as feasible. BMI can be calculated with things that people have around their house.

Also, I do hope you recover from your surgery quickly.

Really? I've always been told that while it's okay if you have nothing else to go on, one should not rely on it because it's so unreliable for many people. I spent a lot of time freaking out about mine, until my nutritionist told me to stop worrying so much because I'm built like a brick and it does not differentiate between different tissue types.

Currently my BMI sits at 24, which is toward the higher end of the normal range for my height. If I were to get into the low range, I would be almost skeletal. And my ex, who was over six feet tall and well-built, was considered obese.

Good to know it works for some people, but I'm definitely not going to be putting my faith in it -- way too much room for individual inaccuracy if you're not perfectly average. I suppose it will work as a general screening and tracking tool. I seem to remember seeing a chart that uses various measurements, along with height and weight, to determine your body fat percentage. If it's accurate, that would be an option for those working solely at home.

BMI is about as unreliable as those little hand held electrical impedance gadgets for telling body fat. The best, best, best method is just to take progress pictures and look for improvements over weeks/months.

To be perfectly honest, I think BMI is virtually useless for anyone physically active. While it might be useful to the average sedentary, lazy individual; it really doesn't work for more athletic people. Take measurements, take pictures, use calipers, and just find where you are happy. If you like the way you look then BMI doesn't mean anything, and if you're horribly out of shape but have a "good" BMI that doesn't mean anything either.

And for those with "thunder thighs", body fat comes off of different people differently. One commonality though, is that men tend to lose fat around their midsection last, whereas women tend to lose it around their upper thighs last.

Soooo, if you really want to "tone" those legs, doing hours of cardio is one option, or just trimming some calories from your diet along with some solid exercise a few times a week will work just as well. Excess body fat means you have to lose fat, which means burn excess energy, which has to come from somewhere.

Have to disagree. Taking progress pictures can also be misleading. I know people who work out for months and then just end up stopping because they don't look any different. If you don't believe in measuring BMI then using a tape measure is probablya MUCH better idea than taking progress pictures. BMI comes more from a health stand point than a 'i want to loose fat and look skinny stand point' because it's commonly used to tell you a healthy weight not 'you'll look like this if you have this much fat to height.' BMI ranges are different for different people, yes, but I also highly doubt someone who's extremely out of shape can have no fat build up (unless they have some sort of problem with their body OR have a super fast metabolism {and if that's the case it always catches up on you}). Also. Solid exercise a FEW times a week will not suffice. To loose weight (and fat) a person needs to do at LEAST a thirty minute work out that gets them sweating four to five times a week. And as for the type of exercise, you need BOTH cardio and weight training to get good results.

I've been watching what I eat very closely, walking more, and wii fit... I really wanted to start lifting weights again but I seriously strained my back muscle a few months ago, so i'm slighty scared too.
.

I did the same thing. I was put through physical therapy for it which helped keep me stay mobile while letting the injury heal. During this time though I swam, used an elliptical, and light hand weights. Give those a shot until you heal.

See, I'm curious as to how far is too far?
I've been told that I'm crazy for wanting to get down to 100 from 106, which I'm at right now.
I'm 5'3" and 15 years old, so I don't necessarily think that wanting to be 100 is too much for cosplay. If I have a thin body and a thin face, then I'll feel much better in my costumes, if you know what I mean. Sorry that this interrupted everyone's posts. x__x

It's funny because, I weigh a lot, but luckily, I'm very tall, so my height kind of evens out my chunk. So it may look like I'm all nice and fit but I'm not.

Summer of 2010...I was 190. I found that out. Was digusted with myself, so I got into a gym and started working out and dieting. It was going great for a while. I lost about 10-15 pounds. I was 174 [last I remember] Then all of a sudden I just stopped working out.

Went to the doctor, weighed about 182. :/ Then I guess I gained some pounds.
Wasnt happy...AGAIN...so I borrowed my moms P90x and have been using it. I'm over week one. And now I'm 183. So I guess I lost a pound.

Ten more pounds, and I can say bye bye to 200 forever. :toothy:

Today was hands down the best doctor's visit I've had since I was eight. The nurse and my doctor were amazed that I've managed to lose so much since my last visit back in November, when I was almost 20 pounds heavier. I have to admit, it felt pretty good, especially since this doctor is a lot nicer than my pediatrician ever was.

Instead of telling me "oh, you're overweight. Lose the weight" (at like, age 8) and never taking into account that I was way too active to not be losing anything (dance from pre-k straight through senior year, and varsity soccer), she saw that something was wrong and put me on pills to fix my metabolism.

More importantly, before I left her office after my physical last July, she took me aside and said "you're a good kid, so I know you can do this." It really meant a lot to have a doctor encourage me for once, so I was really looking forward to today's follow up, so I could show her that she was right.

Short term Goal Weight (Next 2-3 months): 180-190 lbs

I actually counted my calories for a couple of days, thinking that maybe I wasn't eating enough, and averaged close to 2000 a day, mostly done in by dinners. I live with my dad and he just doesn't care about losing weight, even though he really needs to. How does everyone else deal with someone like that holding you back? All I know is that I don't want to have to make two separate dinners every night.

Wow, our starting weights and currents weights are pretty much the same. As for the situation with your dad, I sort of have the same issue with my mom. She says she wants to lose weight, but she hasn't been putting in very much effort nutrionally. Since I count my calories, I can't eat what she cooks. Everything usually has too much salt in it, and I know she doesn't track calories, so I make my own food.

It's a hassle, but cooking is pretty much the only way to have complete control of what your're putting into your body. Having a proper diet is a big part of losing weight and being healthy, so unless you can find a way to get your dad to eat healthier, having seperate dinners is prety much your best bet.

Good luck!

I am caving in and joining this thread.
Here we go.
Current weight: 155
Ideal weight: 120.
YEAH. 35 POUNDS. LET'S DO THIS WITHOUT STARVING YOURSELF!
Starting Sunday I shall bicycle for an hour, and lift weights. Must get rid of love handles and belly! o_e I will do this six days a week. Skipping Saturday because Saturday is lazy whore day where I either work or do nothing. And I will lose the pop and drink more water! ><
But damn, giving up my sweets is going to be a challenge. >>'

Starting Weight: (As of Sept 10)- 190 lbs
Current Weight: 138lbs
Goal Weight by April: 120lbs

Since it's my first time NEEDING to lose weight (I was a super active child, and always built more athletic than everyone else, so when I slowly gained weight over three-four years, I didn't realize how fat I'd gotten. At 5'6 I thought I was just boxish. Then after seeing a picture of myself I realized how bad it was and got prompt to working out. Now I'm down fifty-two pounds in five months (nothing short of a miracle. But thats what diet, cardio and strength training does for you!). I'm finally skinny again!! =D Granted, now it's time to really work on my stomach (since I still have a little bit of chub!) but I'd like to be down to anywhere in the 120 range by April for Sakuracon since I'm cosplaying a belly baring girl =D It feels so good to actually look in the mirror and not be shaped like a box!

I work out with a personal trainer once a week and go to the gym at least 5 days a week.I started this past September and even though I haven't lost many lbs I have lost a total of about 11 inches overall my whole body.I am trying to lose the weight and build lean muscle at the same time.
I am also on a diet which I must get 100-124 grams of protein a day plus up to 35 grams of fiber a day.
I have learned from starting this "diet" that high fiber really helps shedding the lbs too.

Good luck to everyone else!

Previous Check-in: 207.8 lbs
Current Weight: 208 lbs ?
Short term Goal Weight: 180-190 lbs

I only put that question mark there because my scale this morning couldn't decide what number to give me. It gave me readings of 207.4, 208, 208.2, 209.4, and 209.6 that I had to get off and let the scale power down before getting each one. Then it seems to decide on 208. I'm confused.

Hey, guys! Just starting on this <3 I plan on losing 20 pounds by the end of April. Wish me luck.

Current Weight: 125 lbs.
Goal Weight: 105 lbs.

That probably looks ridiculous to some people, but I'm 5'1" and have a naturally slender body type; back when I used to do aerobics I averaged out to about 106, 107. Wish me luck!

Current weight: 208
Goal Weight: size 10

I have heavily muscled thighs from years of horseback riding, so I'm not sure what my 'proper' weight should be. Since I moved to New England and away from affordable riding, I've gained at least 40 pounds and two pants sizes. That's WAY too much in four years!

I joined the gym last month and went 4-6 days a week, barring last week when I was out of town. It's really helped, and in three weeks I have lost 6 pounds. I'll beheading back to the gym as soon as the snowstorms are over and the roads aren't closed.

BTW, I think this is a great idea! It's so nice to see everyone's progress (or lack of progress). It's good for me to see that other people struggle, too.

Two days, then one rest day and repeating that. I was stupid and drank a lot of alcohol this weekend and so I had to eat hangover food on Saturday, which wasn't really good... But at least I've lost 2 lbs so far. I usually get the feeling I'm not going anywhere and just give up, but this time I AM going to do it!!
