Sure, lots of things may have gone wrong, but we did our best to cover them up. Did any one thing stick out of your mind? Did you see something and say to yourself "that's gotta change"? We want to hear about it!

Well, first off, there's the HOTEL. I'm glad to see that AnimeNext is moving back to Secaucus next year.

The hotel would have been fine for other events, but it was just too dang posh and pretentious for an anime convention (although, my crew *did* have fun spooking the 'ordinaries' while hanging out in the bar in our costumes...)

$6 bottles of beer?!?!? And I went to grab some breakfast in the hotel Sat. AM b/c I saw they had a buffet, but was shocked when it cost $13... we would up goin' to a diner instead.

Oh, and there was one minor problem with the in-room video feed. This was a GREAT idea, and my group spent WAY too much time holed up in the room Fri. night watching Outlaw Star, but something happened on Saturday and we wound up being treated to a looping DVD menu of .hack//SIGN all day. No big deal, really, except for the fact that I woke *everyone* in my room up at 7AM to watch it (because I insisted it was the best anime EVER, and they had to watch it RIGHT THEN.) and all we got was a menu. All day long. :eeek:

And after that, since I was awake, I decided to walk down to get breakfast and was treated to a $13 buffet... (see previous rant.)

But other than the hotel (which in no way is con staff's fault) and some minor video feed problems, things were well run. Really. Great job.

See ya next year in Secaucus!

The only problem that didn't involve the hotel, that in my idea is very minor, was that Karaoke only lasted for 2-3 hours, and they didn't have their own songs/lyrics. That was the only thing I could find wrong with it.

Personally, I thought the con was great, went on without a hitch, it seems, but... well, let's just say I'm a minor. Ohhhh my god. My parents weren't there, I was driven by my friend's mom. The sucky thing was the fact thatshe and her eight-year-old son had to follow my friend and I around so we wouldn't get arrested. That wouldn't have been such a problem if the site said beforehand that they HAD to be with you the entire time. All it said was "Anyone under sixteen must have an adult on the grounds in case of emergency." My friend emailed them and they said that that meant that the adult had to be in or near the hotel so they could be contacted if something happened. Lori, my friend's mom, didn't know she had to be there and had to pay thirty dollars for something she had no interest in. Also, the site said anyone under 16 and at the con they changed it to 18, but since neither of us are 16, it doesn't influence us at all.

If you have to have these rules (and it's a good rule, keeps minors safe and such, and no one wants to get hurt at a con), at least state them on the site how they're going to be enforced at the con.

The hotel and the hotel staff were just awful. Specifically: We didn't get our room until an hour and a half after the advertised check-in and we were there at 9:00 a.m., we got yelled out for eating pizza in the lobby when we didn't have a room to eat it in, the hotel was ridiculously slow and overpriced, almost all of the hotel staff (with the exception of like two people) seemed to look down on us, and it seemed like they totally overbooked events for the weekend and then tried to keep us as hidden as possible for the wedding groups and the kabalah (sp.?) group, etc. I also didn't get why there wasn't one single vending machine in the whole freaking hotel. I was very thirsty (all that pleather!) until I found that the AnimeNext staff had water all over the place. That was nice. :) But yeah, if the convention was to be held at that hotel again next year, I wouldn't go. I'm glad they're moving back.

I would say that how the hotel was set up was very weird. Now mind you it was easy to get to there for me(almost entirely by i-87).But i wish you really did not have to go thru the con area to get to the parking area espically with your luggage. That was a pain in the ass to do it thru the way the recommened. That wasn't worth it.I do wish next year that it was being held a bit closer then in NJ though not in that hotel.
Note to others:I used a my own cooler plus there ice to save myself the trouble of no vending machine plus to keep my apples cool. You can get a cooler that fits a 12 pack plus some more stuff in it for like 15 dollars investment.I save major becoup dollars by doing this lol.

Yes, the hotel...Much HATE for it!! Overall the layout and staff were horrid. Other than that, the rest was fine ^^

The con was great, but then again I don't have a basis of comparison since it was my first one. The only problems I had was that the cosplay competition thing didn't start on time and I swear that dude dressed up as Cammy was following me. Everywhere I went I'd turn around and see him. Truley scary stuff.

Yeah, I really have no gripes that are directly the con's fault. The guest I REALLY wanted to see didn't show up cause he was off directing some play, but that's not the cons fault, you know?

And yes, while I thought that it was neat that you could get to every event by basically walking in a circle, the hotel staff wasn't that great. ESPECIALLY that goddamn nasty blond hotel coordinator chick. She was rude like whoa. When the cosplayers in the masquerade were being taken over to the main room from the Mianus room, she started walking in front of a line of us...and then when we were being led away from the rest of the cosplayers, the girl in front asked if we were supposed to be following her. And she just turned around with a rude tone and was like Oh...no. And nearly rolled her eyes right there, like we were idiots to be following the hotel coordinator while she's in the main rooms with a clipboard (basically, she totally fit into the rest of what was going on)...then she took off. I was like damn, some courtesy would be nice, bitch. These people are paying your bills.

Is Seacaucus NJ very far from Rye?

well I didn't stay at the hotel but I found the lay out quite small. I guess I'm compairing it to the BAAF but still... Things were hidden here and there and the scheduals didn't say when some of the VA's were going to be. Just tiffany grant and the creater of OLS.
My friends father took us to eat in the hotel resturant. All they had was fancy food and stuck us in the back cause me and my friend were in costume. Everyone was so stuck up and their food was horrible and expensive. I felt bad to make my friends father pay for everything so i had french onion soup and water... only one problem. they ran out. So i had chicken noodle soup that was HORRIBLY DESGUSTING. so i ended up starving with crackers. (i would've had their cheeseburger but it was big and to much for me) I'm an extremly picky eater so next time i'll go with a family i'm close to.

No, not far at all. If you were to drive from one hotel to the other it would be under 1 hour depending on traffic. It's only about 30-40 miles away.

Like some of the others who posted, my main annoyances concerned the hotel. No vending machines and a somewhat confusing layout (at first). I was able to check into my room a few hours before the official check-in time but the lights and electrical outlet in my bathroom didnít work and I had to call the front desk twice before it got fixed. (That made getting my contacts in and putting makeup on a bit of a challenge.)

One thing I was wondering about though is why most of the microphone stands were set so low during the cosplay contest. I found that there were times that I couldnít catch everything the participants said. Maybe, more people would have used them if they were at a more appropriate height?

Those were directional mics meant to pick up sound. But since almost everyone stood waaaaaaaaaaay too far from them to do any good, it wouldn't have mattered at what height they were. Because the hotel kicked all the cosplayers out of Main Events at 6pm, when they were supposed to be in there for line-up.. I didn't get to go over where the mics were and where people should stand stage-wise to be heard on them. I got to do this last year, and it helped.. but this year.. AUGH! I really, really hated this hotel, a LOT. Well, not the physical building, but the staff of the hotel on the whole. I think the maids were nice and that was it.. and even that is pushing it.

Yeah, I'm gonna jump on the whole "I hate the hotel" band wagon as well. But my beef also lies with a certain con staffer, who had no problem letting my gf walk into the hentai showing late friday night with no I.D., but gave me crap when I tried to stating that "He knew she was 21". And when I tried showing him that my college i.d. was issue in 2000, he still stated that it wasnt proper id. Then we found out the showing was for Black Bible, and left anyway.

Am I the only one that really liked the hotel?? The hotel staff was always so sweet to me, I would chat amiably with quite a few of them, and I guess I'm used to paying city prices for food at restaurants, it was maybe a few dollars more so I didn't think it was too bad. I went to the buffet the first day, and although my expectations for hotel food are usually pretty low, a lot of the dishes were gourmet and surprisingly good. Not great but good (and I'm uber-picky about the taste and condition of my food). Plus the waitress clued me in and helped me smuggle food out of the restaurant, so I had snacks all day ^_^

I actually really don't like the Secaucus hotel. I found it so dreary and...well... as any true NYCer, I just plain hate Jersey to begin with :P This hotel was so beautiful, I really didn't want to leave. And I especially liked how my room was on the same floor as a lot of the events and dealers room ^_^

My only gripes would be: the no vending machines thing, some highly irritating creepy fanboys (I've never experienced anything like this at a con before), and my screwy room thermostat. The cosplay was a bit confusing to me what with the shuffling in and out of rooms before the show, but I've yet to be at a cosplay that didn't have something crazy going on, so I took it in stride. That, and I really really wish I brought my bathingsuit :P

WOW. Seriously. That was pretty cool of them. Maybe I *should* have sprung for the buffet... maybe I could have snuck some food out too (but I did truly enjoy my Dr. Atkins-appoved breakfast of eggs and a LOT of bacon...)

I actually really don't like the Secaucus hotel. I found it so dreary...

This hotel was so beautiful, I really didn't want to leave.

I've been at other conventions (not anime...) at the Meadowlands, and it *is* kind of dreary compared to the Sheraton, but it works better for the type of convention. This hotel was way too "haughty" for all of the craziness that ensued at the con. And I could tell that the hotel's "typical clientele" were not accustomed to seeing cosplayers roaming about. Some passers-by looked positively freaked out. So did everyone in the bar when we were hanging out in there in our costumes. The bartender seemed amused though... my drinks kept getting cheaper as the night went on! :drink:

HA HA! At those prices ($7 for a Cape Codder?!) every discount helps.

My most amusing memory of the bar was seeing Jamie McGonnigal in there on Friday night dancing to *N'sync while wearing Trisha's hat. I'm sure someone has a picture of that somewhere. (I was sitting in the corner with a bunch of friends from AnimeOnDVD.com.)

Another gripe. animeNEXt would have been perfect for a LARP. The one at shoujocon was really good, and I hope there's one for aN next year. I know there was a pariament, but running around role playing in cstume is sooo much more fun
