I'm cosplaying for the first time and since I'm a poor student it will have to be something that won't cost me a fortune. So I'm thinking about the female version of S.Italy.
The hair I do not need to worry about, my hair is naturally that colour and cut. It's the clothes that need to be made/found and the shoes. But I also wonder how much can one mess aroudnd with the design before it gets ridiculous? How many details can I add/change to the clothes?

My idea is that I do a crossover between the two pics below. I hate that cleavage so I would like to make the jacket like in the second pic but with a skirt like from the first pic and then tall boots to that. Also, maybe a thin bow that I saw him wear in some fanart like in the third pic. Would this work?

Basically I'm asking: Is okey to put your own spin on a cosplay uniform (as long as it still looks good of course) ? I get that some things should not be messed with like making Naruto wear pink or whatever but since this is fem hetalia which isn't "real" then there should be some creativity allowed...?

I personally think that'd be fine. Seeing as Hetalia doesn't really have exact borders for the gender-bends - especially ones like Romano who don't have a full official design, it doesn't matter as much. You'll always be making small changes when genderbending them.

Also, if you don't feel comfortable with, or dislike the cleavage-showing version, then I say do what's comfortable. ^^;

I think it's an okay thing in the world of Hetalia. Of the many cosplay videos on Youtube, many of the time, people will just wear normal clothes but put on the wig. People still watch the videos (heck I do) and no body heckles them for not wearing the specific uniform that the characters wear.

I think its an awesome idea. Nothing wrong with that. I know I've modified costumes so they aren't as revealing as they really are. So go crazy. :3

PS: Love you for doing Lovino! He's my favorite, girl or boy. <3

Thank you both for replying :D

Since this is my first (and probably last) cosplay, I want to look as good as possible and not make people go; OMG what is that girl wearing?? Somebody shoot her quick!
Esp, since I'm planning, if I can't find an appriopriate shirt to modify, to sew the uniform and all that jazz... So yeah, wish me luck! hehe^_^

@Rainbow Muffins, yep, Romano kicks ass! But Spain is even better, whom I see you are planning to cosplay in the future *drools* :D

This is about how I'd like it to look. Don't laugh, I made it with a comp.mouse and MS paint :P

@Kira*Chan Actually there is an official Romano as far as I can tell

@KatKiku, yep there is. She either has a pink dress or that mini skirt with the cleavege shirt. Still, not going to let that stop me from doing things my way, haha. Personally I don't really see Romano, as a female, wearing something like that. In my opinion, as a female he would be just a little bit of a tomboy (but feminine) so a relatively short mini and that cleavege just seems OOC. *shrug* But that's just my opinion anyway.

@KatKiku: Yeah, I was aware of the official design, but even if there are official designs, there's still the choice to add creativity to a character, or slightly change designs. Such as, I've cosplayed a fanart version of Canada. It wouldn't generally be what he'd normally wear, but it still suits him (It's like a grown up version of Chibi!Canada's outfit, just with a button down shirt, and jeans.). I ended up getting plenty of compliments on it, everyone knew who I was, but was it official? No. Everybody has their own takes on stuff, like Ullabritta said.

Genderbends though, even after the official versions came out for the Allies, and Axis, I've still seen many versions of them, as I've noticed, because of the various thoughts on them.
I just don't really see a problem with wanting to do that. =\

IMO, you can "cosplay as a character" and you can "cosplay a character in X outfit." If you're more into the "play" part of cosplay than you are the "cos," then I don't see anything wrong with coming up with an outfit you'd think the character might wear in X situation, since you're still putting thought and effort into it. If you're a stickler for canon accuracy or live and die by how many people recognize you and take your photo, then coming up with new outfits for the character may not be for you.

Also, I can totally see not wanting to do fem Romano's booby window shirt. However, I actually CAN see the fem version of him wearing that...as an excuse to pick fights with people who are looking at her cleavage. But most people aren't as, uhm, Romano as Romano is. I also assume all anime characters actually do own more than one set of clothes.

@belligerent, that makes sense. Cosplay isn't something I take too seriously but I am picky when it comes to how you do it; Good or bad cosplay (as everyone else probably is). If people choose to be 100% accurate or make up their own stuff is up to them, as long as it looks good. At the same time, those that create something themselves have to work harder than those that are accurate. You can almost forgive someone if it looks a bit "generic/boring" if they have all the right stuff yet when you free hand you have to sell that look and make it believable. Looking bad can happen so very easily. But I'm in it just to play dress up really since I will be attending a con in June. I probably won't take part in the cosplay contest ar anything. Just playing around :)

LOL, yeah I don't really feel like beating people up because they stare at my chest so I'll just cover up that part XD One is a lady ;)

So yeah... just need to find some fabric or something to get started. Good thing I have until June.

What fabric would you use to make the standard Romano shirt, will 100% cotton do? So far that is the only fabric I found that is the right colour however, his shirt looks maybe a bit stiffer...? Here is a pic: Romano (http://i835.photobucket.com/albums/zz273/pointlesspoint/Hetalia/Romano9.jpg)

For my female Italy outfit I used twill. Look for it near the "denim" or "bottomweights" sections. It is much stiffer than cotton and held up really well. Here's a picture if you want to see how it came out: http://themarchingoboe.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d379qw5

Oh wow, your costume looks so good!:bigtu: Did it take you long to make it?
I see, I'll have to keep my eyes open then for some twill. But I have also heard about poplin, is it similar?

Omg Themarchingoboe you're absolutely adorabl!

especially ones like Romano who don't have a full official design,
I appologise; I misread this as you saying that there wasn't one.
