View Full Version : Ever dyed your hair an unnatural color?

I'm thinking of dying my hair a very dark violet or violet red. Has anybody had any experiences with unusual colors(purple, green pink ect.) what brand did you use? were you happy with the results. i hope this is in the right category since its not for cosplay.

Once you engage in the process of dyeing your hair, using hair dye, you hair has been dyed. "I nearly died when I realized what color my hair had been dyed."

Sorry, one of my personal bugaboos.

I haven't had my hair very outrageous colors, mostly because I don't want to deal with the upkeep, but my friends who do routinely use less conventional colors generally prefer Special Effects (http://www.specialeffectsusa.com/hair_dye.html) brand. I've used Manic Panic myself, over my natural hair color, and it didn't seem to make much of a difference or last very long, but that's to be expected.

You can use a temporary dye over your natural color, but expect that, unless your hair is rather light blond, it's not going to make a tremendous difference and will mostly be visible under bright sunlight. Dark colors like burgundy and deep purple will mostly show up as a tint. The most striking effects are achieved by bleaching to the lightest shade you can safely get your hair, using toner to mellow out the brassiness, then dyeing with your color of choice. It's a pretty involved process, and unless you have a trusted friend or enough money to bring the job to a professional, you may not want to approach it on your own.

That said, using the home permanent hair color like L'Oreal or Garnier or whatever, I've never had a real problem. At this point I leave my color to the professionals, though, since home dyeing tends to come out uneven on my porous hair, so the scalp is a totally different shades from the ends.

I've tried temporary dye and it's mainly a tint for me. I have the kind of hair that needs bleaching first. :/

A while back I met this one dark-haired girl that was hellbent on changing her hair color. She has had just about every color in her hair but for some reason decided to try bleaching and dying on her own for once and in the hotel of all places.

"This will work, right?"

Less than half an hour later she was freaking out. Her hair barely changed but it looked like someone dyed the roots blonde. It was a little amusing. Then about half an hour later she got out of the shower and I nearly freaked. She must swim a lot because her hair was slowly turning this nasty seaweed green and it looked like a giant booger hanging from her head it was so godawful. At first I nearly pissed myself laughing but it got worse. The green finally managed to reach the ends of her hair after about an hour and despite my best efforts I couldn't stop laughing. That was the first time I've cried in years. <3

So yeah...If you dye your hair a lot...If you swim a lot, don't expect this to work right. Bleach, tone, don't do it yourself and you'll be a LOT happier with the results. :)

Well... Mine wasn't exactly 'dying' it. I did however bleach my hair several times in a row within a period of a little over a week for my Hitsugaya Toushiro cosplay. =)
The first time I bleached it, it became bright orange.
The second time, it was bright yellow.
Finally, the third time I died it, it became 'almost' white.
I got it from Sally Beauty Supply when I was back in Colorado.

My sister has also put pink streaks in her hair using a dye from Sally. I forget what brand she used to do the streaks though.

Oh, btw... They have really good shampoo to use just after you dye/bleach your hair as well. It usually comes in small packets. I'd recommend getting/using that just after you do any dying/bleaching, it really helps keep your hair from getting damaged. =)

I once dyed my hair octarine.

Only Terry Pratchett fans will appreciate that.

...I'll be quiet now.

i haven't done any "unnatural" colors. once when i tried manic panic blood red (and didn't bleach first) it went purple as it washed out, so i started using some of the clairol/loreal types instead. when i bleached last year i got the stuff in the purple and white bottles and packets from sally's and was pretty impressed with the result, but i left it in a little longer than the instructions said to since my natural color is almost black. i use garnier color shield shampoo and conditioner every time i shower, which helps a lot after you've bleached a couple times and your hair gets the texture of straw.

I have bright blue streaks in my hair, but Ive neglected them and now they're somewhere between blonde and green. Really weird. Im thinking of dying them purple or red or just putting it back to my normal hair color. Or maybe just dying my hair a nice reddish orange color. Oh, the possibilities :D

When you dye your hair an unnatural color, make sure you treat it like a baby. Take the best care of it that you can. Those colors fade out fast too, if you plan to do it then dye your hair that color 2-3 days before you do the cosplay. :)
I have dyed my hair magenta, dark purple, and hot pink.
For all of them I went to a salon, so I can't give you products to use.
I was happy with the results, but you have to really take care of it so it doesn't fade quickly and then looks bad.

hmm... im starting to have second thoughts, though i would love to have a blackish color with a purple shine... as far as bleaching, my hair is so fragile it might all die if i bleach... :(

Punky Color is really great! I've dyed my hair all different colors since I was 16 - with a few years of natural color in between - and Punky is my favorite for the bright stuff. It shows up the best and lasts the longest, at least on my hair.

If you're going for a dark color with a purplish shine, Punky would work. It does show up over darker colored hair, though it fades gradually, as it is semi-permanent. I have put dark purple over brown, and it was actually really great, not quite as vibrant as it is over blonde but still incredibly purple.
With a dark reddish or purplish shade, you can also find some permanent colors in the wide array of standard box kits.

A rather long time ago I had my hair dyed blue. It turned out great and lasted for soooo long: till the first time I showered after that. :D And then my hair was ugly grey-ish and colorless. I wouldn't recommend dyeing (not dying, nobody's dying) your hair blue, I don't have much faith in any brand of blue hair dye... Haha.

They said it would be a permanent color and I paid a crapload to that scammer of a hairdresser just to get a disgusting hair. DX

I want to put pink in my hair sometime soon. I might do it for my 19th or 20th birthday. I love abnormal hair colors, especially pink, blue, red, and green. I have yet to dye my hair any of those colors though I've died my hair other normal colors may times. I really liked the time I had Jean Grey red hair. It was so awesome!

Well I decided for now to just darken my hair with a really gentle semi permanent haircolor my hair already looks red especially in the sun so know it looks like a black cherry kinda color. Like this but darker http://http://www.google.com/m/search?site=images&gl=us&source=mog&client=safari&hl=en&aq=f&oq=&aqi=g6-k0d0t0&fkt=1949&fsdt=15002&htf=&sa=2&q=black+red+hair#i=70

I really like it. It's unique without being overbearing.

manic panic works well

01-31-2011, 12:48 AM
do the colors come out as bright as they look in the bottle?

01-31-2011, 12:52 AM
dyed my hair pink, but the brand I used only lasted for like...three days :(

What brand was it? and was it semi or demi permanent?

I've had my hair every colour of the rainbow except for green. For my blues, pinks and purples, I've only ever tried manic panic.

If you're planning on using it, the colour comes out brightest if you've bleached your hair to a light colour first. Brown or blond, just as long as its light. Also - If you're planning on using it for longer - that is, when your roots grow in you plan on re-dying it the same colour, ALWAYS bleach the old colour out. I made the mistake of just dying it over and over again, and when I tried to bleach the colour out, I ended up with permanent horrible aquamarine hair and three inch long blond roots.

When that happens, the only thing you can do is dye it dark to cover and grow it out.

And remember to wash the colour out thoroughly, and avoid heat+moisture. When my hair was blue in a hot summer, it tended to bleed a little on my white shirts. (Easily removable in the laundry, but just a precaution!)

I also saw that you were thinking of a black with purple or blue shine? I'm not sure about the States, but here in Canada in Walmart, if you look in the hair dye section, there are blacks that have slight tints to them. I can't remember the brand name off hand though, sorry.

Hope this helps you a little!

As the person above me has stated excellently, if you want a vivid bright colour, the only way to really achieve this is to bleach your hair first. Bright colours fade quickly, to be honest some of them look pretty cool faded such as blue and pink but colours such as purple do not look good whatsoever. To keep it up you need to dye your hair rather frequently. Special FX is probably the best brand I've encountered. Manic Panic and Directions are ok too.

I dyed my hair black a while back and its proving very very hard to shift!

I've done every color but black, currently my hair is very light blonde with some pale pink highlights. I personally prefer just a splash of color, or the less intense tones. The really bold shades look awesome, but are a bit much for me to deal with on a daily basis. Two years ago, I dyed my whole head hot neon pink, and while it was really awesome sometimes I just looked in the mirror and thought "Oh my god, it's too damn PINK!"

My favorite hair color was a faintly purplish shade of burgundy, sort of like red wine. I loved it so much, but since my natural color is so light it was a real pain to keep up with the roots. Darker roots you can get away with if you don't let them get out of control, but even a little light root makes it look like your hair's falling out T_T

Yes it works best if you start out with bleached hair. I've had my bottom layers dyed purple since the summer. I really like how it looks, but I had a stylist do the bleaching and dye the first time because I was afraid to try bleaching it myself. I've used Manic Panic and Special Effects, the Special Effects lasts a lot longer, especially the Deep Purple color. My hair is dark blonde so the color will also show up on my hair if I don't bleach it, just not as bright. My sister has very dark brown hair and she put a streak of Deep Purple in hers and it looks really cool, it's not very noticeable until the sun hits it. I've used Special Effects Deep Purple, Wildflower and Purple Smoke.
Unnatural colors do fade pretty quickly, but I found that the Deep Purple (and Deep Purple/Wildflower mix) I used started out very dark purple, nearly black and then faded to a nice medium purple so I was able to go without re-dyeing it for 3+ months. There are also ways you can help keep it from fading. IME the sun fades it the quickest. I use a sunscreen/color protecting spray if I'm planning to be out in the sun. I also use a color protecting shampoo and conditioner and use cool water instead of hot when I wash my hair. Sometimes I just use conditioner.
The only problem I've had with it is purple stains on some of my shirt collars and pillowcases, the color does bleed some for a while after you dye!

I was going to write a big long post about my experiences with coloring my hair. I've been doing it for ten years now but I don't have anything to say that hasn't already been said! Everyone's responses are really good. The only thing is that I would never repeatedly bleach my hair. It's really damaging. Once your hair is bleached to the lightness that you desire, only bleach your roots when you want to refresh your color. For instance, if you color your hair blue and after a month it's washed out and your roots are an inch long, only bleach your roots before you put more blue in. Otherwise your are continuing to damage your hair when it doesn't need to be bleached. If you are putting over the same color you should be fine without bleaching your already bleached hair.

Please only bleach your hair when you are changing the color! Bleaching damages and dries out your hair. Dry hair will not absorb dye.

I've used Special Effects dye in Blood Red.

I dyed it on the 4th of January and it's march and still looks great! So if anyone has ever been really disappointed with red colored hair dyes, this one might be for you. It's lasted me longer than some permanent red hair dyes have in the past.

I bleach and dye my hair various colors. Pink, blue, purple... They change shades and have went to aqua and green, red, and baby pink and orange.
I enjoy it but I have cut back since most places do not appreciate it. :(
brands: special effects, and beyond the zone. Manic panic sucks.

I dyed my hair blue last summer, it was awesome! The first day was really stressful though, because I spilled it everywhere by accident, and I didn't wash it all out completely, so my scalp and parts of my face turned blue! XD it was okay after I washed it better though :). It stayed a long time, but by the end of the summer, it faded into a spring green :\ not very attractive, but I digress.

My hair has been multiple shades of purple for about two years now. Here are a few suggestions from someone who does this as a permanent style.

1. Get your hair professionally lifted (Bleached) to blonde, the lighter the better. You will need to do this about every month, roots only after the first time. Price varies but shouldn't be any more than 60$. I suggest this because you don't want to fry your hair by doing it yourself with one of those crappy bleach packs you can get at Hot Topic.

2. Do your color yourself or have a friend help. Do not pay a salon for unique colors, they never last as long as you can make it last. Let the dye sit for at least 30 minutes on your head, put a plastic grocery bag over it and let your body heat it up a bit to penetrate better.

3. Use Special Effects, it lasts the longest.

4. Gentle "for color treated hair" shampoo, but only shampoo once to twice a week. Wash with conditioner the rest of the time.

5. REMEMBER!! You have to do maintenance on the color so you don't look like a high schooler with no money. Commit to your color, its there till you change it, you will need to "refresh" the color every two weeks or so.

6. If you want the pastel look, grab a color and mix a very tiny bit into conditioner to get the level of tone you want. Remember, more conditioner, less dye. It's like mixing paints. I never use a color straight out of the bottle, you can stretch a bottle when you mix with conditioner.

7. Respect that your hair is now a different color and will sometimes rub off on clothing/upholstery/bedding. Be careful of what it touches. I travel with a blanket for over pillows and my own dark towels for drying my hair.

I love colored hair and I love when people have colored hair. I hate when I see someone who does not take care of their colored hair. It should always be beautiful and vibrant. It really isn't all that hard to keep up once you start the process, it becomes a little ritual of renewal in a sense.

PS: To address color fading. I wear a hat when I am out and in the sun. Find one you love!

Just saw this thread!

I've dyed my hair every color from platinum blonde to jet black and every color in between. My favorite has been my bright blue. I currently have it again. I always bleach my hair out because it's darker and then put the color on. I have sworn by Jerome Russell since I started with the unnatural colors. It used to be Punky Professionals but now it's called Punky Colours. I order mine from amphigory.com That color has lasted longer on my hair than any other brand that I or my friends have used.

I had my hair a deep Burgandy a few times, and I had bright pink in my hair for a loooong time. I usually use Punky Colors and I really liked it, but I haven't had an unusual color since high school. :/

I used to really want to dye my hair, but my hair is quite curly, and I've never really seen anyone with curly hair pull off unnatural hair colors. (Though I'm sure there is someone who could prove me wrong xP)

And now I also have to keep myself employed u.u. So that prevents me too.
