View Full Version : Chris Redfield RE5 Props Ideas and Critique

Before I begin, I'll go ahead and say that this is going to be a long read, and probably an ongoing thread.

In the upcoming months I'm going to be helping a friend who is planning on cosplaying Chris Redfield from RE5/MvC3 for a MvC3 group that we are planning for AWA2011 by making some props for him.
Most of the props I'll be making for him will be the various weapons that Chris has access to in MvC3, normally not a problem since characters generally only have one or two physical weapons. Chris, unfortunately, has 13 at my last count. Obviously this an absurd amount of props to carry around, especially considering the size of some of them, so here-in lies my first question.

-Which of Chris' arsenal would people be the most interested in seeing?

AFAIK his MvC3 arsenal includes: Baretta M92F Pistol, Knife, Stun Rod, Flame-thrower, Ithaca M37 Shotgun, Magnum(can't tell if it's the M29 or the M500, Machine gun(pretty sure its the VZ61), Grenade Launcher, RPG-7, Proximity Mine, Grenade, Incendiary Grenade, and what looks to be a Stinger Missile Launcher. :O
Then there's all the other weapons and silly things that could be done as far as items go if you include what he could pick up such as the various herbs, ect, but for now we'll keep it to just MvC3 Chris.

His pistol and knife are already decided on as they are part of the costume and are in his idle pose. At most I'm thinking 1 more small weapon, 1 medium to large size weapon, and either the Proxy Mine or 1 of the Grenade types.

Now for the second part of the thread:
Out of frustration from searching for about 2 hours and only finding what the knife is supposedly based on I sketched out some blue prints and made the knife last night, even though I couldn't find a great reference picture or the proper dimensions.

Here is what I have so far:

Critique is much appreciated, as are large clear reference pictures of Chris' knife. The blade has yet to be painted and the handle has yet to be stained. It is held together by 2 1/4" screw-posts in the handle. From the pictures I was able to find, I think I got most of it right, though proper dimensions and curvature of the blade are probable pretty far off. Right now I'm mainly concerned with not having missed any critical detail of the knife.

The pistol pictured is what I'll be modifying and painting into Chris' Baretta M92F and is really just there for size comparison right now. It's just a toy that my girlfriend had lying around from an old Lara Croft cosplay with the trigger removed to make it more con-friendly.

Thanks in advance for the input. I will update the thread as more props are made.

Good looking knife, man. To me, the curvature of your knife looks a tad exaggerated, but I could be remembering wrong. Overall, it looks really nicely made.

I think (I'd have to check) the tang of the blade extends slightly past the wood grip at the pommel (where a lanyard hole might be). It's been awhile since I've looked at Chris's knife though so my memory may be off.

Thanks for the comments.

Yeah, looking back I'm kinda feeling like the curvature is a bit much. And even though I still haven't found a clear picture of his knife, looking at pictures of Chris it does look like there is something like a nub with a lanyard hole sticking out past the grip. I had assumed that was a graphical glitch in a couple pictures, but it seems to be pretty prevalent. Perhaps I'll see if I can add that on with a separate piece.

I realize this is probably late, but I remember coming across an artbook for RE5 that included chat w/ the developers. There was a good amount of character art, and I remember one of the devs talking about his knife in specific (I think I recall him saying it was purposely oversized to emphasize how much stronger Chris had gotten). I'd bet there's some good reference shots if you can find that in a bookstore or get scans of those pages from someone else.

Edit: Did a bit more poking around online, found that the book was called Biohazard 5 Official Art Works. Also found some scans here (http://www.residentevilcenter.net/re5ima_2.html), but unfortunately only the fifth image on the page really shows the knife, and at a largely useless angle. Looks like whoever scanned this probably only focused on the characters here (or I just remembered incorrectly about the book including detailed knife images).

Also found this page (http://haoranc.livejournal.com/1129.html). Even if the images are down, maybe you can get ahold of the person and ask them to send you something directly.

Hope this helps.
