So, I'm working with my friend to make a Jacket for my Grell cosplay. My only issue is that we do have a rather tight budget and the obvious wool/cashmere isn't really an option right now. We have a pattern (for this coat: http://www.burdastyle.com/projects/boucle-coat) that we were going to alter for his coat. I wanted to know what was a good substitution for wool? I personally own a cream fleecy (not sure if that's the word... it's what my costuming instructor called it) cotton coat that looks and feels and looks similar to a soft wool because unless you're an expert you couldn't tell the it was 100% cotton. I just can't seem to find that fabric in red... anyone know any places I can look for that type of fabric in red or a nice coat fabric (I'm a noob, I know nothing about fabrics) that won't cost me an arm and a leg.

I was looking at some twill last time I was in JoAnns... I wasn't sure if it was a good choice though. In that case I think that I may have already found a good candidate unless I get another suggestion.

Most modern gabardines are not going to be heavy enough to get a "coat" look unless they are very, very heavyweight (and thus very expensive).

What is your budget ? You can get wool for $10-20/y, including coating.

Grell's (Madame Red's) coat isn't very, very heavy - but you do need something more substantial than a 12oz gabardine can offer.

Twill is "okay" if that is all you can afford. My personal opinion is that it is overused as a multi-purpose fabric - being used for many things it's not idea for. This is fine if it's all you can afford, but I don't think it's the best-looking choice by far.

I cannot find wool (alone, with nothing else) for less than $26/y. That's a lot considering how much I need for the coat.... Um, if I could find it for $10, even $15 if I could find it but I don't know where to look to be honest... I do have San Francisco, CA at my hands but I honestly don't even know where to start.

I haven't checked lately, but the last time I looked Denver Fabrics (http://www.denverfabrics.com/) had some wool and wool blends for around $10 (or less) per yard.

I made mine out of medium weight cotton and just lined the whole thing so it has a coat weight to it, but you don't want it to be TOO heavy, cause you have to wear it off your arms. The cotton I used was from joanns and was just about 6 bucks a yard. ^_^

I got a red cotton gabardine for my Grell cosplay. It's pretty heavy and the perfect color.
Thanks everyone who posted.
