View Full Version : The Rapunzel Wig Thread!! :)

I'm in the midst of planning my own Rapunzel cosplay, and the thing I am most stumped about is the wig! I know what look I'm going for, but I'm not sure exactly what wig to get for it. For kicks, here are some Rappy cosplays with exquisite wigs:

My personal favorite and something I could only ever dream of doing! (http://usagi-tsukino-krv.deviantart.com/gallery/#/d38xqzl)-

The fabulous Miss Traci Hines! (http://thesuzieblue.deviantart.com/favourites/?offset=120#/d38015o)

I know I want a pretty much floor-length wig, but I want it to be thick, like Traci's. I've been searching for wigs on eBay and have found some that I like, but I also want to get extensions to make the wig fuller (and heaver! DX). Problem is, I haven't been able to find any wigs with matching extensions. I have kicked around the idea of finding a cheap-but-nice long wig and purchasing 2 of them, then making wefts out of the second wig to sew into the first. Any ideas?

Here are a few wigs I am looking at:

http://cgi.ebay.com/51-Extra-Long-Bang-Blonde-White-Green-Str-Cosplay-Wig-/280565108327?pt=US_CSA_MWA_Wigs_Extensions&var=&hash=item870b44d19d

I much prefer the yellower wigs over the platinum blonde ones, though I would be fine with a natural blonde wig as well.

Feel free to post your own questions about wigs for Punzie as well as advice for me! :) Thanks!

EDIT
Okay, so I just figured out that Amphigory carries extensions/loose hair that could be usable....

You won't want to mix extensions from Amphigory with wigs bought online from Ebay. The colors most likely will not match, and heat resistant fibers and non-heat resitant fibers have different qualities that will stand out.

As far as the Rapunzel wig, Traci started out with a shoulder-length wig and then added a bunch of extensions onto it.

Hi, Vince! I definitely wasn't planning to mix wigs from eBay/Amphigory. If I got extensions from Amphigory, I would get a matching wig from there as well. I have been considering just getting the "Really Long Wig" from there and working with it, but it is sooo expensive! And it is a really light blonde, which I'm not too fond of. I'd rather not spend $125 on a wig I don't even like!

Thanks for the tip about Traci's wig! I've considered doing the same, but I'm trying to figure out the most efficient way to do it. The wefted extensions from Amphigory are wayyy to expensive, but the loose hair seems rather affordable. I'm just a little nervous about the process of wefting loose hair, as I've heard it is rather tedious & time-consuming. I would also have NO idea how much of the hair to buy, as I would pretty much want the full 48" of each bundle of hair. I would assume that each unit of hair would make 1 weft, though maybe 2 if split in half. I literally have no idea of where to start on this! ^.^ I'll definitely be doing my research!

What I plan on for my Rapunzel wig is creating the top part aka the double dutch-braids and then use cotton batting, wrapping it with extensions for bulk then attaching that to the wig. I am planning on adding some of the 48 inch extensions to the top to integrate into the huge braid to make it flow together. One thing that really irked me about the Disney Park Rapunzel is how her top hair and the braid weren't attached. It made for unnatural movement and just looked BAD.

I think the reason why it was split was so that she wouldn't have so much weight on her head; imagine walking around for 8hrs with that much hair on your head!! Attaching the length of the hair to her dress puts the weight on her body rather than her head and neck.

I had thought about using batting as well! I'm just not sure how that would work out. I don't really want to have much glue involved because I'd like to be able to disassemble the wig for maintenance if needed.

You would not use glue. You would wrap the fibers around the batting then you could spray it with some hairs spray and hitting with some LOW heat to set it in place.

Hi! I'm also looking for a wig, but as I'm blonde and I have the same colour of hair as Rapunzel, I have thought of buying extensions instead of a wig? what do you think? because I can't find extensions longer than 20"..( I don't know where to search) and I think it would be more expensive? ( Sorry for my bad english v.v") and thanks ^0^

Are you thinking about putting the extensions in your own hair? If so, you would need human-hair extensions which are very expensive, at least for high-quality ones. Also consider the fact that you would have to put in the extensions, style, and take down/out everything in your hair every time you cosplayed Rapunzel. That would be a lot of work! Wigs can be expensive, but they are definitely worth the money.

I have an idea. ("liiiiiightbulb", as Gru would say). I have an idea that I think just might work despite the fact that it would be very expensive but I don't care because it would be awesome. I reeeeeeeally love what Usagi did with her wig and I soooo want to do something like that- actually having 70 ft would be amazing, and I'm going to see if I just might be able to do it. :) *evil laugh*

I've used fake extensions with my natural hair (For princess Leia) before and it looked fine. Especially if she intends to do the braid. She'll just need to find a discreet means of attaching the extensions.

If anyone is still interested, heres a link to a great tutorial for making a Rapunzel wig. Its the massive braid. So if you don't mind spending time and money, I say use this idea.

Have you seen this tutorial? http://courtoonxiii.deviantart.com/art/Rapunzel-Wig-Tutorial-214656639
That's the one I used. I plan on making my wig again, sometime, when I have a bit more money. http://oi52.tinypic.com/wlr7uw.jpg That is my current wig, made using the tutorial. I uesd the colour 613, but I managed to buy all of my supplies locally. I bought the extensions first, then I clipped a little bit of the extension and went to the wig store with it. I used the colour 613, like the girl in the tutorial did. It seems like a pretty universal colour to me.

I'm thinking of doing this cosplay, with long hair thats just there. It won't be quite perfect, but I'm thinking of this: http://www.epiccosplay.com/50-caramel-blonde-straight-extra-long-cosplay-wig.html
With these: http://www.epiccosplay.com/30-butterscotch-blonde-one-piece-hair-weft-extension.html

It says one is caramel and the other butterscotch - I'd be worried the colors wouldn't match up correctly! You might be able to integrate them together somehow to be pretty though.

i dont know much about wigs. would 4 of these work to make the braided rapunzel wig (with the filler of some sort to bulk it up). i figure this will be better than lots of extensions right? 1 for the base and 3 for the braid is what i was thinking. if that is way off, what would you do?
what else do i need? i read somewhere about a wig cap, but anything else?
thanks!!!

kiggi- Wow, that wig is super-cheap! Watch out though- with wigs you pay for the quality. I can' be sure, but I bet that wig could be likened to a Halloween wig. It looks pretty nice in the photo, but I would be reeeeeally skeptical about purchasing them. Perhaps you could just order one to see what the fiber looks like in different lighting & how it photographs, and look at the thickness of it.

I need some help please! See, I play Rapunzel for a Princess Party company. I have this Wig (http://www.cosplay.com/photo/2844832/) which worked great. But now I have a neck problem which makes wearing it harder. Does anyon have suggestions to do a version of a Rapunzel wig that ISN'T super heavy? I don't care if it isn't super accurate. I was thinking maybe doing one more like the parks version would make it easier on my neck.

Suggestions?

Suzie Blue
08-06-2011, 04:55 PM
kiggi- I think that would be the wisest option. It would only cost $40 for all of them, which isn't horrible, but that's the cost of one really high quality wig (it's about what I spent on my Briar Rose wig from Arda). I would be interested in seeing pictures if you do decide to get one! :)

korii- The parks Rapunzel wig is actually two separate ones: she has a short braided one on her head, while the big braid is actually attached to her dress. You can see this in some of the videos on YT. (If you didn't already know that ^.^) The only other options I can think of are going with a short brown wig, wearing a mid-length blonde wig, or resting your existing braid over your shoulder to counter the weight.

I was thinking of using two of these wigs:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/180661861489?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649#ht_2465wt_1185

(I hope that link works)

One would be the base and the other would be used to add additional volume. Do you think the second wig would have enough fibers to cover a filler to bulk it up? Or would I have to find some matching hair extensions as well? I'm trying to make this look good without breaking the bank either.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Leslie! I bought this wig about two weeks ago, and the thickness is very meh. It's the only wig I own, so I wouldn't know how to describe it. I would say no, the safe way to do it would to buy three if you're doing the large braid. If you're looking to make a semi-thick braid, then two would be perfect, but for a large one, definitely not. Also, it tangles like something fierce. Have a good comb and wig head ready out of the package!

Wow. I totally forgot this thread existed! Time to contribute!!!

First off...That's the one I used!

In terms of thickness, I'd say it's very good as far as wigs go. At least compared to others I've worked with. Wigs in general are never very thick. Example, if you put a tie around one wig, the ponytail would be thicker than the average persons. Because the colour is actually a bit of a mixed tone, I don't think it will be easy to find extensions that match ONLINE...but if they're in the middle or underneath close-enough will be fine.

Now, a few points...

1. If you're planning on wearing it loose, one will be fine. Especially on a budget. But if you're wearing it out for Halloween, it's going to tangle and need high maintenance. If you're planning on putting it into a braid, you'll need at LEAST 4 for an accurate one. 2 wigs will probably give you a braid about 3 inches wide. I used foam tubes for my base and still needed FOUR wigs to properly cover them. Too bad, since I was planning on still having one loose to wear down. :(

2. It does not look the colour on screen. It's much more or a natural blonde in person. In some light's it photographs a bit darker than I would like, but usually with flash it has a beautiful golden blonde to it.

3. It does tangle something fierce!!! It was ALMOST hell to separate the sections to wrap and braid etc etc etc. I had to dig up a LOT of patience. Even if you're leaving it long and straight, you'll find the same thing when you try to separate the wefts from one wig and separate them in the base to sew the additional wefts in. Though I found the easiest way to cut the one wig apart was to lay it flat, fresh out of the bag, wig cap laying down ( so, the netting part that goes on your head facing up ) and cut from the bottom wefts up, lifting them off the base wig 1 by 1 as you go.

4. If you're doing the braid, you will need a lot more than 2 wigs.

One wig worn down with flash:
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b184/aubme/punzw.jpg

Looks more dark gold here:
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b184/aubme/braid1.jpg

Four wigs, 3 foam tubes, a can of hairspray and an eternity of patience later:
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b184/aubme/nbd.jpg

Good luck! If you have any other questions, let me know. :)

My heart dropped when I pulled it out of the shipping bag. XD But it's grown on me and now I LOVE it. It has a beautiful shine and a warm, natural, GOLD tone instead of platinum blah. I'd say it's almost the same colour as they use at the parks except theirs has a bit more light beige in it.

I ordered that same exact wig a few days ago and paid for the rush shipping....let's see if it makes it here by the 6th when we leave!

Also note it has LONG ( past the chin ) bangs. They can easily be worked back into the braid or brushed in with the rest of the hair but they come from the center of the wig net. Its only a ... pinhead? I don't remember what they call it... skin top. Meaning just the center circle is 'skin'. This also makes it a bit tricky to part on the side. I have some netting showing where I did it and will probably add some extra hair there...

Thanks for all the great tips! I did end up getting this wig. Holy c*** does it tangle (no pun intended). It's not done, but it's looking not too shabby for my very first time working with a wig.

I did end up using extensions that did not match, but the flowers did a great job hiding the thin areas.

You can see the rest of my costume (as well as the WONDERFUL Pascal my friend made for me) on my blog. I would loooove feedback since this is my first cosplay.

Thanks everyone for the input! I did end up buying two of the wigs and using hair extensions. The flowers did a pretty good job covering the thin areas. I'm stuck!!! i don't want to wear the braided version of the wig... because everyone seems to do that one... yes i know i am setting myself up for a tangled wig of doom and all but since this is my first EVER properly girly cosplay i have done in the 5 years that i have cosplayed i am really looking forward to having a long haired cosplay besides i deal with almost waist length hair anyway (its the wrong colour for Rapunzel so no suggestions to use my own hair please) so the use of detangle spray is not a new thing to me.... my question...

suitable wig? thats a decent length? and of decent quality...

im thinking of this one

I'm preparing to rip my hair out making this braid, guys. I've got a limited amount of hair and I have no idea how I am going to disperse it and thicken. I can't get any extentions for the wig because I am broke, and I've got til the 13th.

And @soraxriku4eva it looks a good length, though I can assure you, it will be a disastrous mess haha. I have a shorter wig than that and it's good quality and it tangles SO easily. But if you can keep it up, go for it!

sora, i have http://www.aliexpress.com/product-fm/473161050-Long-150CM-Chobits-Chii-Blonde-Straight-Cosplay-Wig-wholesalers.html i have worn it down @ disney 2x, for many halloween parties, and general around just because and yes, it did tangle, but not that bad really. i used lots of detangler and brushed it out carefully and braided it between wearings, but it was fine. when i was in the car it was tied with ribbon in intervals just to help it from happening too bad when i could avoid it. i planned on making hte huge braid, but i too love the free flowing hair! i had fiber optics in mine to glow, and maybe the strips of batting i had to hide the black battery packs helped in the long run in making it not tangle, but yeah, i like wearing it a way no one else seems to ;) i may eventually finish netting a fine tube shaped hairnet to keep it more contained and that may work? who knows.

here is me and my husband and son :) despite his look he loves being pascal, and i will be sad that he wont fit in it next year

My wig was made from taking a normal-thickness 60" (I think it was 60, might have been 50) wig and wrapping it around cotton batting. I twisted the batting and then wrapped the hair around it, and sewed the batting together, then to hold it in place, sewed parts of the hair to the wig. Then I took a 3rd braid I had made (I dont know how to explain it) and wrapped it around that. Then voila, glue on a couple hundred flowers, and its done!

I think I'm going to go for multiple purchases of this (http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Long-150CM-Chobits-Chii-Blonde-Straight-Cosplay-Wig/473161050.html) or this (http://www.ebay.com/itm/180661861489?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649#ht_2465wt_1185) wig, one sewn in to the other with some jumbo braid extensions and some quilt batting. Which wig do you guys think is best?

My real wonder though, is where you get all those artificial flowers~ I'm British, so no Jo-Anns, and shipping is usually astronomical from American websites. I was looking at wholesale from China but there must be an easier way I'm missing. Most job lots on eBay come in sets of two dozen or more, which is just too many of the same flower. Any thoughts? Thanks

Looks more dark gold here:

Four wigs, 3 foam tubes, a can of hairspray and an eternity of patience later:

Good luck! If you have any other questions, let me know. :)

Wow!! What a fabulous post, thank you! Can you tell me about how heavy the wig is? I'm planning to go as Rapunzel for the Disney Princess Half Marathon and definitely want a wig, but the weight could be an issue. Thanks in advance!!

Hey, I was thinking of using multiples of this wig http://wigsecret.com/Details.cfm?ProdID=248&category=3 in champagne blonde 22, for the braid. I've bought wigs from here and they are really thick, amazing quality. Thoughts?

Hello!! Umm, I just had a quick question! Well, see, I bought the Delilah wig from Arda for my Rapunzel and it ended up working pretty well but it wasn't thick enough so how many wefts do you think I should order to make it thick enough?

This is the wig I'm talking about: http://arda-wigs.com/products/delilah

And these are the wefts: http://arda-wigs.com/products/long-weft

As for the Godiva wig, I wanted to do that one but it was out of my price range at the time. I think you should go for it!!
