I don't know exactly where to post this, but I am hoping its okay to do it here...

So, X-Men First Class is going to be the same night as my Senior Prom. Like any good Marvel lover, I've prioritized and come to the decision that I'll see rue movie regardless of commitments otherwise.

So, because of the conflicting dates, I decided that I ought to combine the best of both worlds and make an X-Men inspired Prom dress. Trouble is, I've got little experience with dresses, and I'm having trouble coming up with a design I like. Can anyone make any suggestions for dress cuts? Or anything else you think might help?

With original designs like these, a lot of the decisions just need to be made based on what you like. Is there a specific style of X-men uniform you want to base it off of (i.e. the First Class uniforms in particular)? Is there a character you want the dress to be inspired by? Is there any kind of dress style that you know you like and would like to use? Questions like those will help you narrow down what you're looking for. Even just answering some of them gives you a place to start. ^_^

@Rayonea Thanks for the response! I've got the basic idea, but I'm having trouble putting it to paper.

I was thinking I might try a halter top dress (that's what's in right now where I am, I guess). And I had wanted to base it off of the older uniforms from Uncanny X-men, with the yellow top removed and the addition of the red belt. I always felt that uniform to he a favorite, pretty classic but a bit snazzier than the original.

Other than that, I briefly contemplated the idea of basing it on a Marvel Girl costume, but I don't think those colors would stand out as much - there are already some dresses like that which I saw at the mall. @_@

I can post some sketches when I get home to my scanner. Think anyone could give me some tips on changing/altering my designs? Again, I'm new to the whole dress thing.

As I just helped two friends do Formal Femme Xmen dresses I'd love to see what you come up with! We had a FF!Gambit, Nightcrawler and Deadpool in our group so go for it!

Do you have pictures? I'd love to see them!!! I was thinking a dress just based on the uniforms, but now I'm thinking individual characters would be a good idea. I'm torn! Uniform? Marvel Girl? Rogue? Storm? Dazzler, maybe? Or Jubilee?

I'll poke around and see if I have decent shots somewhere...my computer refuses to let me attach anything via USB atm so I'm sorta hamstringed. And do whatever makes you happiest! And no one ever said you had to stop at one ;)

I would suggest starting to sketch ideas - just as many as possible. That way you have lots of places to start from, and you can pick your favourite(s) and narrow it down from there. If you're stuck for ideas on dresses, check out the dress section on patternmaker websites (like, Simplicity, McCall, Vogue - the same brands as they have in the fabric stores). There are tons of different dresses in there, and you even have a pattern to start from!

@FeyMeggan - I'd love to see pictures as well, if you have them!

I never even thought to look on a pattern site!!! Rayonea, you're an absolute genius!!! I'm off to start drafting some designs!!!

If I post here, would you mind critiquing, Rayonea and FeyMeggan?

Glad I could help! Pattern sites are always great for ideas, I find. The pattern books at fabric stores can help too, but the websites are easier to get to.

And I definitely wouldn't mind critiquing for you! I can't wait to see your designs. ^_^

I'd love to see what you came up with, and as all my friends know I'm full of opinions, wanted or not! I'm always excited to see what people come up with, and I'll admit to doodling out looooots of other characters when I was doing the first three.

@Aearon Isn't that Miss Marvel??? I was thinking Marvel Girl, like Jean or Rachel...

Anyway, I'll have my scanner hooked up in a day or so (tech troubles always arise when it is most inopportune), and hopefully I can get some good feedback on designs!!! :D I'm REALLY excited to start construction. This is SO much more exciting than I ever thought prom might be. :P

Well don't forget, over the years most characters go through a LOT of costume changes! Heck, a few get designed out then never used(like the original phoenix design was white and gold, but paper at the time was too thin and the page behind would show). Very excited to see what you came up with!

I think going as the Dark Phoenix would be fantastic or perhaps Storm?
