View Full Version : Tsukasa's Hat

This is the first part of my Tsukasa costume to be finished, and I'm rather proud of it. It's come out a lot better then many of my first attempts at anything.
It's basically made out of felt, sewn together. I had two large, clear jewels, so I just painted those green two get the large jewels on the side. The trimming was given by a friend, and I got the small green jewels at....Michael's I think...

There are only three things that I could see that could use some improvement.
One: The flaps are slightly uneven in size.
Two: some of the stitching is a bit too visible (use smaller stitching next time)
Three: You've got the trim slightly off. Tsukasa's hat has two small lines of white trim that are together except when they go around the gems.
But that's only when I'm completely nitpicking. XD

Well, the trim is actually gold, but the type that I got is a bit off. I only realized the circles around the gems after I had glued it all... *sigh* I'll try and fix that when I get a chance.
But this is only my first hat. I'm gonna have to make another one in the future.... *mutters something about wigs and hairspray*
And yeah, my stitching does need a lot of work. ^_^ Luckily that's most obvious with my sleeves for the top, but that's all inside the top so it's harder to see...

XD Oops, for some reason I forgot that Tsukasa has the gold trim and it's the Wavemaster from the video game (whose name I currently forget) who has the white. XD
I have several suggestions for you if you do remake it. One is to use a pattern for the flaps. Another is when you tuck it in to curve it, cut slits instead of just cramming the fabric in. Or make it crammed in more gradually. Another thing is to always either use felt or finish your edges. If you have problems with too-visible sewing, well, on a hat you can feel free to use fabric hot glue. Jo-Ann's sells the stuff. It DOES dry white instead of clear, but it works wonders and won't melt in the heat. At least as far as my experience goes.
Superglue can help keep trim on. Really. Superglue.

The character from the game is Elk...I haven't actually played the game, but that's on my next order of business after I finish with this costume.
Anyway, I used superglue to glue the trimming on, so it's nice and...not falling off. ^_^
And I had a lot more trouble with those flaps then I should have. I In the end I hadn't tucked the middle part slightly in the brim like they actually are, because it just didn't come out right.
And unless my stitching really improves I'll probably use that fabric glue.
So, thanks for all the tips, I'll definately keep them all in mind if I do that remake.

Very nice, can't really add anything about it other than what HanyaanFaery said.
Well, one thing, but it has to do with the whole costume. I would look to make sure that the felt you used for the hat matches with the fabric color you used/will use for the tunic. This is where I would have used the same fabric and found a way to put it overtop or something, but, I'm not sure how hard it would be.
Heh, I'm a major nitpicker about those things. Being a perfectionist is hard when you're a cosplayer, especially when somethings just *can't* be done. ^^;;
Good job though!

Nice, but isn't Tsukasa's hat brown? From those pics it looks purple. ^^;
Well my cousin made a hat for ax, I helped him a bit. Here's a pic of myself rockin' it. It's not too great of a shot, but if you have any specific questions about it. I'll do my best to help ya. ^_^

Purple?? Well, maybe in the bad lighting, but rest assured, it is most definately brown. ^_^ And I did use the same fabric for the trimming on the top. I have pictures of the whole costume almost finished (I don't even have the material I need to trim the skirt), and I'll post those up, hopefully today sometime.
