As usual: anyone who recognizes what it is (ie. a Japanese person or a fellow geek) will think you nutters/a weaboo. Most other people probably won't notice.

But since I assume you'd probably rather impress the folks who would know what it is -- you might want to either avoid going outright schoolgirl or alter regular non-costume clothing to achieve the look you want without being obviously costumey.

The folks most likely to think it awesome as it is are the ones showing up to class in cat ears :/ Which I guess can be good or bad, depending on how you feel about cat ears, weird out-of-context Japanese words and wearing dorkdom on your sleeve.

In the end, you need to do what makes you happy, not everyone else. If you like it that much, wear it and screw what everyone else thinks.

But to be painfully honest -- if I saw ya in that, I'd not be inspired to befriend you... I'd probably avoid you rather aggressively out of embarassment. Then again, that says as much about me and my hangups as it does about you and your sense of style *shrug*

I would try to find something nautical-themed that wasn't a schoolgirl uniform - because plenty of nautical-themed grown-up things do exist, or you could make one !

Even if you re-purpose it, it still is what it is and projects a message depending on who's viewing it.

Some people mind think you're a nerd / dork / weirdo. Some others might think you're sending some weird quasi-sexual message if you are or not. What do college-age boys think when they see a college-age girl running around in a child's uniform ? Most often they run into that on soft-core porn posters. No, yours wouldn't be that over the top, but people are going to draw associations based on what they're familiar with.

Personally, I think it's in poor taste - you're in college now, and it might be fun for a con to dress up as a younger character, but you're an adult now, why would you be wearing a kid's uniform ? Sure, what you're wearing doesn't matter, but it's still going to broadcast the message that you're not ready to be where you are.

I wouldn't avoid you, but I'd think you were kind of immature. I'd give you a chance to prove me wrong, but not everyone will.

Personally, I don't think that is one of the more over the top or standing out ones and could actually pass pretty easily as normal clothing as long as the quality isn't obviously 'costume quality'. (Meaning that it looks like a cheap costume rather than normal clothing)
Especially with so many sailor-themed fashions about lately in 'normal' clothing stores, I've seen things such as coats with collars like that.

Umm why a middle school uniform ? I'll be slightly more positve .If you must wear a gakuen type uniform why don't you try this *kogal look* at least it looks slightly more casual and not so *hey look at me * try it with the vest and without the ribbon. I dunno just trying to offer advice.

I think that look is really cute.

Yep me too and personally i would rather see someone in this going to college versus the middle school sailor fuku.

But to the OP i hoped that helped. If you ask me the kogal uniform look always beats a sailor fuku anyday.

I thought it was rather cute and looked almost like a hoodie over any generic pleated skirt.

To be fair, anyone is going to look oddly at a college student wearing a school uniform, but I would venture to say you could get away with a generic pleated skirt and casual top without shouting "WEEABO NERDO RIGHT HERE YO"

I actually have a blue pleated skirt that's a bit short (I wear it with black tights) that I can wear with tee shirts and tanks and hoodies so it does have some air of uniform to it without being a blatant 'cosplay' sort of style.

Thats another good idea that i forgot about (hoodie + mini skirt)

Though i would choose a slightly form fitting hoodie that way it won't look like bag lady gone bold

HUR.
I just imagined a bag lady with rollers in her hair and cat ears on-top of the rollers wandering around a grocery store shouting about anime, while wearing her oversized hoodie and a little mini skirt.

But yeah brotip: Coordination is key.

Ah, thanks everyone ^_^

I'm not going to bother with the fuku after all~
But I found a nice jumper with a sailor collar which I think looks pretty casual -> http://www.yesstyle.co.uk/en/sechuna-sailor-collar-top-ivory-one-size/info.html/pid.1024166129 /Ijustlikethecollarreally;.;

& I've tryed a kind of kogal look before (cardigan & pleated skirt) But I've kind of outworn it now~ I bought a Candy Sugar skirt, but it's really long and comes down to my knees.. ; .; and I've worn my cardigan too many times eheh. I could try again though~

What kind of shoes would you recommend to wear with the kogal look?
I'm worried that loafers might make it look too formal, or something. <:s

I might buy a plain pleated skirt to wear with some hoodies though ^^

Ah, why am I so useless when it comes to fashion xD; /stupidmestupidmestupidme

The skirt could always be fixed just make it a bit shorter, it doesn't have to be unbelievably short to the point where it crosses your comfort level but it should be above the knee and pleaded with a plaid design otherwise it won't look right. You should get it tailored. As far as the cardigan it should also fit properly but it should be slightly loose. Also try colors like peach yellow or pink. Black isn't a good color for a cardigan if your going for the kogal look.

Also you don't have to do "cardigans if you don't want to" you could also do different color shirts that stop around your waist line that go good with skirts, but that look does stand out more so cardigans might be best for you if you don't want to attract to much attention.

Also uwabaki or loafers; in my opinion don't go with the style at all because they can look way too formal or just weird and old...uwabaki looks weird in general becasue its a boring white looking sandal loafer with different color padding on the back side. Just choose some cute flats that aren't too formal and wear them with some loose socks.

another side note : you must do your hair in order for the look to look nice. Like wear it down with some curls or up. There are lots of tutorials up that you can do that don't damage your hair.

But----

You can do the hoodie skirt thing as well. Just make sure the hoodie "FITS" and when i say fit i mean it makes you look your size and not super puffy and/or unnecessarily large. Also the hoodie should stop at your waist or a little below the waist so the skirt can show off fully. A baggy hoodie with a mini skirt doesnt look right so get one that fits the form of your body more than a overly large gaudy one. Hoodies are thick in general don't add extra weight to yourself.

I think the look would look cute if you were to pair it with a pleaded, plaided brown or red mini skirt with a light colored hoodie and loose socks.

As someone who rocked the whole uniform look for twelve years (wuddup Catholic schooling), it would look fine with some nice sneakers (not like shoes you go to the gym in that have dirt crusted all over them, but more like vans or chucks).

Aha, I had to wear a school uniform for 12 years too (:>
I had one for Primary school and one for a private girls school I went to for 6 years~

And with the seifuku I was gon' buy 'n' all, I decided against that~
I've just bought a couple of plaid pleated skirts instead :)

Thank you everyone~~~
