I'd like to open the floor for discussion on all things STARS. Please only discuss STARS gear here, and feel free to post reference images and/or your STARS cosplay for feedback. I am working on a breakdown of each character, one at a time. I will list their gear, plus any other notes that seem useful. Please note I'm not doing your shopping for you. I'll explain what things are, and it's up to you to figure out how and where to get them.

Let's begin with a breakdown of the boss himself.

Albert Wesker
Alpha Team Captain

Wesker has a few specifics to his gear that a lot of cosplayers seem to struggle with. I'll try to cover each aspect of his costume in detail that isn't TL;DR, but I want to maintain some level of quality here so try not to get lost along the way.

First and foremost is Wesker's sunglasses. There isn't much to 'em. They're plain black, have somewhat rounded lenses, and are very dark. The closest models I've ever seen have been found at places like the .99 cent store. Seriously. Try to keep them simple. With these sunglasses, less is more. I recommend a metal frame, and no fancy crap.

Next up is his earpiece. It doesn't exist. Anybody who tells you otherwise is mistaken. It's close to some models, but there is no perfect model. You can get some good results by customizing one though. For mine, I took a simple headset from an old portable CD player, painted over the logo, and used a cut of black cable cord (the kind that hooks TV's into the cable outlet in your wall) and a mini microphone with the foam cover taken off. Does it function? Not at all. Does it look right? Absolutely.

Wesker wears a white t-shirt under his uniform shirt. I'd imagine it has a STARS patch on the left shoulder, but this tiny detail won't be seen unless you want to layer your costume. Any plain Hanes or similar cheap white t-shirt will work.

Wesker's uniform shirt is navy blue in color. A navy blue BDU shirt will work, or even just a navy blue button up dress shirt, but in actuality Wesker's shirt is probably a Police shirt like this one:

http://www.vpcam.com/members/1402226/uploaded/30005.jpg

Keep in mind you won't really see the details unless, again, you're layering (i.e. want to look the part even without the vest.) There is a STARS patch on the left shoulder, one inch below the shoulder seam. The patch is black in the Resident Evil remake, but it's blue in both the original and in his STARS costume in Resident Evil 5. I suggest going with whatever your group is going with (assuming you have one.)

Wesker's vest is a M69 flak vest with no collar, and dyed gray. You may have some luck if you find a replica M69 vest, dye it, and cut off the collar, but it may save you time and money just to buy a replica or have one commissioned. Don't forget to put the white STARS lettering on the back!

Over Wesker's vest, he wears a black h-harness with a handcuff pouch, double pistol mag. pouch, and radio pouch, all of which are made of black nylon (or cordura). The pistol mag. pouches have buckles on them, and the radio pouch is open top with a snap closure. The pouches generally have to be jerry rigged into position with tape or by some similar means. The radio itself is probably an ICOM model of some sort, as you can see an orange screen on the front and it has a short but thick antenna.

Holding the h-harness in place is a 2" nylon web belt with a snap release parachute buckle. Wesker's is like the one here (the 5th one in the top row):

http://img.diytrade.com/cdimg/747538/6488273/0/1217147733/plastic_buckle_snap_buckle_release_buckle_cam_buck le.jpg

These buckles aren't easy to find, but you may get lucky in a military surplus store or by hunting around a lot on the internet. The belt is worn in the middle of the abdomen, a few inches above the bottom of the vest.

Wesker wears the standard issue STARS gloves, which are Hatch Reactor gloves:

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/318P4K6AHML._SL500_.jpg

It should be noted that these exact gloves are nearly impossible to find anymore. Most retailers now carry the new Hatch Reactor model, which looks a little bit different:

http://images1.opticsplanet.com/180-180-ffffff/opplanet-hatch-reactor-3-4-finger-lr10.png

If this is an acceptable trade for you, then you're set. They're easy to find and not badly priced for the quality they are. (It should also be noted that he wears an entirely different pair in Resident Evil 5. I haven't yet identified them.

To make the gloves look right, you'll need to wear black wristbands like these McDavid ones, which I use and they work great (the logo scrapes off easily):

http://images.esportshealth.com/images//products/en_us/standard/63164fl_dt.jpg

Wesker wears a wristwatch over his left wristband. Here is what his looks like up close and personal. This one is a rare Japanese replica that you probably couldn't find without offing somebody. However, it's simple enough in design to find something close.

http://homepage.mac.com/viper.fox/viperhazard/wanted/gsx-wesker.jpg

From there, things get pretty simple. He wears a black nylon duty belt, probably 1.5" but 2" is both more common (thus easier to find) and more durable. He wears a generic "quick release" thigh holster with a single strap. The actual model does exist, but I've exceeded my alloted number of images, so just check some airsoft retailers and you'll find it. It'll have two straps, but just take off the bottom one and you're good to go.

He wears black BDU pants, which are bloused at the bottom using boot bands.

Lastly, he wears 8-hole duty belts (which are a hybrid of nylon and leather, MANY retailers carry these in various brands.)

That covers everything you need for a Wesker costume. I'll have another post later on his custom Samurai Edge.

Would you guys mind either editing your posts to have something productive in them, or not posting mindless nonsense anymore? There's a reason our last TWO GENERAL THREADS have been locked.

This spot reserved for the next part of the guide.

If you want to, just make an appropriate thread and don't do it in this one. This thread is for STARS only.

Looking forward to seeing it, though.

Wasnt it close to one of the Lucida family fonts????

Id like to know for sure as well; I want to remake a shirt since the one I bought shrunk on me....amd I might actually have time to get around to it.

Jack what is the exact name for the hatch reactor gloves? I had a search but I didnt find them, and a model name would make searches easier.

Also I cant remember the Isreali (sp?) copy of the m69 flak vest which is cheaper which leadmill kindly told me :)

Thanks for the great thread :)

That's it... they're Hatch brand, the model is called "Reactor".

http://www.hatch-corp.com/detail.aspx?pid=LR10

That's the current model with the split knuckle design I was talking about. Even with that, they're still stiff as hell. I wish they would have kept the old look since it matched RE gloves so well.

Garfsan
07-15-2011, 08:45 PM
Sorry I was refering to the ones that are coming increasingly rare now, whats their name?

Captain Jack
07-17-2011, 10:15 PM
They're also called Hatch Reactor. It's just that they were replaced by the new Hatch Reactor gloves, and that's why they're harder to find. Your best bet would probably be to do a Google shopping search for Hatch Reactor gloves, and see what seller's still have them listed with the old image. Even then, make sure to contact the seller first and make sure that they have that particular model and not the new split-knuckle model.

I recently bought a pair from Botach Tactical, who had the old image on their website. They sent me the new split-knuckle design, and when I called them to check up on it they looked into it and let me know that the old ones had been replaced and they weren't aware the picture on the site was out of date.

So just be aware of that. I honestly have no idea who may still have the old ones, but some sellers may still have some in stock.

Been looking for some gloves that resemble the old ones you mentioned.

technically those aren't accurate. Neither are the Gloves in the guide. If you look close at Wesker, as with Jill and Chris, http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs51/f/2009/336/2/6/Wesker_Mod__STARS_Frnt_to_Bck_by_DragonKeeper333.j pg

You'll see they extend well past his wrist. The gloves being posted here are the ones I use for my chris because the only gloves that come near what they wear are like 80$ and aren't fingerless. But I can't seem to find them >.<

From the guide (which are the same gloves KALASH69 posted):

There are no gloves in that design that feature wristbands. At least not that I've found. The gloves are definitely based on the Hatch Reactor gloves (old style, not new style) but Capcom added the wristband, which actual Hatch gloves do not have.

A friend of mine used bondage cuffs to extend her gloves for her Jill project. It's a simple option. If you were more skilled you could do some custom work yourself.

yeah there's nothing wrong with them..I'm just saying that I have seen ones with the wrist covered..just wish I could find them again.

Captain Jack

The only ones I ever saw with the covered wrists were a Hatch knockoff made by some Asian airsoft company, but I can't speak for the quality and don't see them for sale anyplace these days.

Even the legit Reactor's aren't that good, which is why they got redesigned I bet. They're incredibly stiff and make handling a gun a pain in the neck. Hatch has way better gloves in their line.

The one you linked is pretty perfect. It's the M6 shoulder holster (WWII issue). Otherwise you could always get an old M3 shoulder holster and modify it with the extra strap.

Anyway, got my Samurai Edge:

It's really straight forward, and it disassembles more or less exactly like a real M9. I actually made a video of me disassembling it for a motion graphics project a few semesters ago, so that might help. You can check it out here (http://youtu.be/itjR2w72NB4). Did you get the HK3P or Tokyo Marui version? The TM is plastic and the HK3P is metal, so you would have to use the appropriate paint depending on which you had. Also, obviously, you need a rail, which ehobbyasia usually has in stock. Hope that helps.

I started working on my RE1 Chris a few months back I base my look for it on the hot toys version of Chris Redfield they had.

http://www.figures.com/forums/attachments/news/1075d1254232975-resident-evil-5-mms-chris-redfield-s-t-r-s-version-6-biohazard-5_chris-redfield-s.t..r.s.-ver.-.jpg

My version came out looking like this.

https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/65655_595611920450702_1768744232_n.jpg

The M69 vest i pick up from ebay for about 200 I got a Large size one but recently looking around the net i found this website that makes replica

http://www.sofmilitary.co.uk/M69-Flak-vest-product,14098,1

The gloves i actually wanted to go with the ones that look similar to the 15th anniversary Capcom edition planning to add an embroidery or patches to make them look similar

http://s3.amazonaws.com/bonanzleimages/afu/images/0849/0742/__kgrhqiokpue4jlj_j4lbosgc7tjjw__0_12.jpg

The belt is traditional military belts, i use an MP sling to make use at the strap for the knife and bought a brown sheath with a knife and use Velcro to place hold it onto the sling.

I use and 5.11 tactical trauma shirt and PVC patches off a Chinese store from ebay.
I'm using a long sleeve underarmor shirt because at the time my arms had a lot of mosquito's bites from a trip to the Caribbean i had made and i look like i had chicken pox was not trying to show all of that.

Knee pads were the hardest to find because I base them on the hot toys model so i got some blackhawk knee pads pants were gray BDU's and the boots were OD jungle boots again base of the toy.

The gun holster is and M9 safari holster i found on ebay used for a decent price.

For now, I have been working on my Wesker STARS cosplay, customized and modified, thanks to time, money, and lack of sewing skills. I mixed the ideas of both RE 1 and RE 5 using a black MOLLE vest with black pants and either a dark grey or black top.
- Pertaining to "customization", I am including an aluminum briefcase with the Umbrella symbol on it, signifying that Wesker may have had a hidden objective.
- With points on lack of sewing skills, I don't have the ability or money nor time to attach the STARS lettering or patches, since AD: Sabakon is more than a week away
-Surprisingly, I found some mock-off or actual (not too sure) Hatch Reactor gloves for not such a bad price on Amazon. It's from Voodoo Tactical and surprisingly, it looks real close to the Hatch Reactor model of old

Well, the one on the front is certainly leather, and probably something hand made. I would search around ebay for old binocular cases, or any small, leather pouch. As for the one on the back, it's definitely a butt pack. http://www.imsplus.com/butt-pack-enhanced-.html Something like that perhaps?

It's just an ALICE LC2 belt. You can usually get them for less then 10 dollars. Most of the gear you seek (aka STARS issue stuff) is early 90's US Military standard issue stuff, with the exception of the flak.

Hmm not sure if this thread is still alive or if I should just start a new thread for this or not but I'm planning on taking an airsoft Beretta 92 FS I got from Walmart for $16 and modding it to be Jill's Samurai Edge. Also going to make the other variants for my S.T.A.R.S. buddies as Christmas gifts after I get mine done. Thing is, the only paint I think that would stick to the gun without flaking is model car paint, not sure though I have to test it when my gun arrives. I used acrylics on Sherry's pistol and it started to flake in contact with my gloves even after I used sealant.
For Weskers variant I figured I would just skip the laser sight and just do the undermount rail and my friend can attach the laser if he wishes.
As for Chris the only thing I see different on his variant as opposed to Jill's is the coloration behind the logo and the silver trigger.
As for Barry, oh boy I don't even know where to start. I'm not sure if I should even use the same gun model for his. And tips on that?

Model car paint should do you just fine. That's stuff is tough as nails. I use it on a lot of my props and it takes a long time for it to wear out.

Barry's Samurai Edge is still a Beretta base, but you would need to find a rail/compensator hybrid (Evike used to have them, don't know if they still do) and modify it to get the right look.

Awesome. ^^ Thanks for the tips and yeah the model car paint is perfect. And I ran into a snag on Jill's gun so I want to resolve it before I move on to the other characters guns.
I've got Jill's gun all done paint job wise now I'm stuck as what to do for the S.T.A.R.S. and Kendo engravings on the slide. I called up a few local engravers and engraving stores and all of them said they wouldn't do it because it's plastic and plastic is gonna melt and be a mess. I was just gonna etch it with my dremmel myself but tried it on a scrap piece of plastic and didn't have enough control over it to be comfortable trying it on my gun. So I went to plan B, bought "clear labels" and printed out the etchings lettering only to find that the labels aren't ACTUALLY clear they're foggy like and look horrible on the gun. T.T (Should of opened the package to check before I bought em. Huh....) So plan C is now in effect I'm just gonna order a custom vinyl decal sticker from a site and use it and if THAT fails somehow well hell I guess plan D I'll just use a knife and carve it myself regardless of how crappy that would look.
