Things have stabilized here in Japan somewhat. I'll start up a WCS 2011 information thread for people who have any questions leading up to the summer. Preparations are going ahead and there will be plenty of opportunities to donate to the relief effort for the Tohoku region. You can donate through the WCS top page link that goes here (http://www.tv-aichi.co.jp/top/qn_110314_e.html) or if you aren't in Japan then it might be more efficient to donate directly to your national Red Cross. You can also send a photo message to the Prayers from Cosplayers site here (www.prayersfromcosplayers.com).

The big events are the Osu Parade on the Saturday which will be August 6th and the Cosplay Stage Performances which is on the Sunday August 7th in Nagoya. I don't have exact times right now but I will update this thread as we go.

The parade sign up usually goes pretty quick and it can be tough to work out for non Japanese speakers so what I'll do is make a list of people who would like to join and I'll do the sign up for you. I'll add names to this top post as we go, if you can't make it just post in the thread and I'll remove your name no time restrictions or anything there.

Its a lot of fun, all events are free and its OK to cosplay in public spaces so if you can make it out let me know and I'll see what I can do to help!

The offer is open to anyone, anywhere who has a cosplay.com account as cosplay.com has supported the event.

I would like to participate this year, but it will depend on when it's going to happen. Looks like they should be announcing dates next week.

My friend Zoe and I would like to sign up for the parade, possibly a third person, not sure about them yet.
For cosplay at the event, is it acceptable to cosplay things like Tomb Raider? This is my first experience with any international cosplay event and I don't want to look like an idiot cosplaying a movie/game if that's not really an accepted thing.

Yeah, that's fine Dreamkitty, the parade on Saturday is whatever goes and during the championship on Sunday people are cosplaying all over the Oasis 21 complex in Sakae, Nagoya - Lara Croft is no problem there either.

I'll add you and Zoe to the list and when your third friend confirms just add an entry to this thread.

Of course! The participants in the parade on Saturday August 6th are all in costume(last year was about 500 people), August 7th during the Stage performances and before that you can cosplay throughout the Oasis 21 complex and there is something new this year on August 8th called the Sweet Castle cosplay event (http://www.tv-aichi.co.jp/wcs/2011/e/event/sweetcastle.php).

It looks to be in Inuyama, a little outside of Nagoya but looking at the pictures it would make for a great backdrop depending on the costume.

I wish I could make it to the parade but I can't because I have FAIL! work hours and I always work until 7 pm on Saturdays... and I live in Okayama prefecture... But if I leave Saturday night I can make it up there for the next day's events and the Sweet Castle cosplay event!

Uhm... may I ask if there is a map to look at for these places. I've only lived in Japan for about 2 months and it's my first time here so my navigational skills are also full of FAIL right now.

Thanks!

Oh yah, the parade will finish up around 5pm Saturday but there will be plenty going on at Oasis 21 on Sunday. Basically you can catch a peek of rehearsals Saturday night and Sunday morning. There will be a number of things happening on stage during the day Sunday and most of the Oasis 21 complex is open to cosplay free of charge for anybody during the entire day. As it moves into the evening the place gets pretty packed so find a place where you can see the stage and take in the show.

Oasis 21 is in the center of Sakae which is 2 subway stops from Nagoya Station where the shinkansen stops. Check the link here (http://www.tv-aichi.co.jp/wcs/2009/e/event/) and scroll down to the "Oasis 21" map to get an idea of where it is, its basically connected to the subway station so just follow the crowd.

For hotels, get something in the Sakae area, if you can still make a reservation at the Nagoya International Hotel do so, otherwise there are more economical hotels in the area like the Hotel Eco Nagoya Sakae, Tokyo Daiichi Hotel Nishiki or the Trusty Inn Sakae (make sure its the one by Sakae station).

I'll have more info on the "Sweet Castle" event on Monday as we go.

Gixxer -> I think the last shinkansen back to Tokyo is around 10 pm so you should be able to make the Sweet Castle event on Monday and then catch your train.

-Edo-
06-01-2011, 08:27 AM
RookBartly -> Anything you do you want to make it light, the parade is for about an hour outside and then everyone mills about the Osu Kannon temple grounds. There is a stage show after that and all together you're outside for 2-3 hours in the summer heat. Everyone is in it together though so its like a mass cosplay catharsis.

CelestialShadow -> I'll see what I can do to help out!

Hi, I'm new to cosplaying here in Japan.
I haven't actually done it yet...

A couple of friends and I are looking into cosplaying either on Saturday or Sunday.

What would be the best day to do so to just take pictures and have pictures taken?
We don't think we will be in the parades due to the heat, but what's the easiest and best place for general cosplaying?

From whats been written here, Sunday seems like the best possibly around the Oasis 21 area?
Sorry if I'm not making much sense (O_o)
I really don't know what to expect when everything is all over the place and not in one area like it is back in the states what I'm used to (><)

I think Sunday would be better just for hanging out and taking pictures, here's a video of a couple years ago which shows the cosplay area pretty well:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3s6QHTMi8uY
(Sorry its in French, go to about the 2:00 minute mark to see where a lot of the cosplay takes place)

The parade is quite a rush, hot and packed with people I recommend being in the parade if you're there. I'm sure there's a chance to take pictures of your favorite costumes before and after though.

The WCS is unique in that way as there is lots of stuff going on everywhere in and around the city, it can be tough to track if its your first time out but the main locations are Osu on Saturday and Oasis 21 on Sunday.

Do your best to get a room at the Econo Inn as it is right above the underground connecting to Oasis 21. General tickets went on sale yesterday and the changing room tickets for Sunday sold out right away. If you are staying at the Econo Inn you can just change in your room and go straight to the underground where it is alright to move through in costume.

Hey all, I'll give the parade list in the OP a little tweak here, I don't see it going that far but we will cap the number at 15 if need be. Also we will limit it to people who have a cosplay.com accounts as they have supported the event. Again, the offer is open to anyone, anywhere who has a cosplay.com account.

See you very soon everyone!!

Sorry!
I haven't checked in a while either due to travel!

Me and my 2 friends are planning to go down on Sunday!
Didn't get any changing room tickets and it seems like its too late...
Do you have any idea what we could possibly do?

Also, what time would you recommend going down to Oasis on Sunday?

Thanks again!!

If you can book a room at the Hotel Econo Nagoya Sakae it is virtually connected to the underground that leads to Oasis 21 so you can just change in your hotel room and walk over. Otherwise if your staying at a hotel farther away change in your hotel room and take a taxi over.

There is stuff going on on stage all day from about 4 pm so any time up to then. You can take it easy in the morning, go check things out from your hotel, if you see people down there and feel like joining them thats when I recommend you go down :)

Noon seems like a good time, I'm guessing? haha

The problem is, we're coming up from Shiga which is nearby and won't be needing a hotel room (' - ' );;
Is there any other way to get around this for changing?

anyone can help me buy the Sweet Castle tix ?

-Edo-
08-01-2011, 06:37 PM
Gixxer, you should be able to buy them the day of the event at the location:
http://ja.curecos.com/event/view?id=17821

But I would plan ahead and send them a message here just to confirm:
info<at>cosjam-revolution.net

If you do not have someone who could help you with a Japanese e-mail you might be able to get away with a google translated version just keep the sentences short. Try that first.

By the way with the weapons rules, there is nothing specific about how realistic weapons look but it does say that you cannot wear military gear that looks too real. I would stay on the safe side and include weapons in that. If its an air gun put a big red marker on the tip because the city police are going to be escorting the parade along and might be curious.

Hi everybody, thanks for coming out! I hope you all had a good time. It's really intense to be cosplaying outside in the summer heat especially in Japan but it was cool to see how many cosplayers were walking around freely in the Osu area on Saturday and Sakae on Sunday. You know how events here can be tight with where and when you can cosplay so I hope things stay tis way.

It's a pretty spread out series of events and I don't think my directions were sufficient at times. In the end I'm glad you all were in the parade and got to cosplay at Oasis 21 on Sunday. There are lots of events coming up and I feel I owe you one so I'm looking forward to meeting up again. I'll be at Comiket and TFT next weekend for sure, if you're going, see you then!

Hey Ed, personally I had a great time but the heat was a bit much for me and i felt like i got a bit over exposed especially on sunday when we were at oasis 21. I am still feeling the effects and have been sick to my stomach since monday.

I really liked the parade, thought it was a good idea since space was limited and the way they had it set up was pretty cool and effecient. I even got free gifts from a few otakus who were worried the hot weather might kill me lol. (got bottled water, chocolates and cool wipes)

I would definatly do it next year but will really have to prepare for the weather because even in my costume it was almost unbearable.

The competition was awesome to watch, loved each and every skit that was performed, was very impressed by the level of cosplay at the event and how friendly everyone was. If you are a gaijin and want to be accepted by the cosplay community then WCS is the place to do it. The vibe was great!

I hadn't cosplayed in 2 years (since I came to Japan) and it was so much fun to do it again with something I had to reconstruct here lol
The heat was intense on Sunday at Oasis21 and I don't think I sweat this much in months!
It was pretty intense and hard to rest and cool off with all the pictures being taken of me and my group, but everyone we met was very nice and people were very polite even when asking for photos.

Thanks a bunch to -Edo- for all the pointers and tips and without this thread, I would have been lost!

Hope to see you all around at another event!
I should be at Tokyo Game Show next! (with the same costume lol)

I had a great time! Way better than the first time I tried going by myself!

My favorite events were the Osu Parade and watching the finals. It was also nice to see the rehearsals the day before as well....easier to take good pictures of the costumes and way fewer people!

The Parade, once we managed to get there, was hot, but walking in the covered shopping area helped with the heat. Also, the water that was passed out along the parade path was an excellent idea! Oasis 21 though was pretty bad. Even in my normal clothes I was dripping all day and the heat didn't seem to dissipate as the sun went down either. Still, it's an interesting venue and it was fun to eat lunch at one of the cafes and see all the cosplayers eating too!

I was disappointed on having to miss out on the competition after-party and the Sweet Castle event. But work/school have to come before cosplay!

I agree that the whole event had a good vibe. I look forward to attending again next year! Need to get to work on some better summer costumes though....
