View Full Version : Am I missing something?

I recently designed a Mario outfit using Victorian clothing, and I was wondering if there's anything I need to add to make it Steampunk... Just curious; I'm not making the actual costume for a while since I'm in the middle of another, so you can take your time answering!

Do you have any pictures of the design? That will help achieve results. If not, people either won't answer or will just be blindly shooting out ideas.

I'm courious myself. As a Mario cosplayer, what is your plan to make it steampunk? I can see a red linen shirt and workmans overalls using period patterns, and a derby with a brass "M" on the front. How about modifing a Mario Sunshine FLUDD pack into a steampunk sprayer? Have a backpack with guages and some lights and a copper tube going out the top to a metal sphere with a funnel on it.
I might just have to make this myself.

Ah, sorry! I have the design drawn out on paper, and it's nothing flashy or anything!

I was planning a hat like this, only in red. Maybe a brass M, but in my designs it was just fabric.

The vest would be like this, only in denim-colored blue, and with four white buttons with a red button down shirt under it.

The pants would be like this in the same blue as the vest, and white buttons again. Maybe pin stripe if I could figure it out, and the boots would be a little less than knee high and brown.
That's all I have planned besides the fake moustache, and I was wondering if that was too basic, y'know?
Edit- Bah, I forgot to mention the white gloves!

That seems like a good jumping off point. I would say to add suspenders to it, even if they wouldn't be seen real well to add to the look that is similar to his overalls.
The big thing would be to try and make some accessories that would look like they are from the Mario games but have been punked. Maybe some sort of fireball that is coming from a really cool contraption or something.

Weapons! That's what I felt I was missing! A flamethrower is cool idea. I can see it now, with a hand crank and some kind of fire making thingie and a big metal cylinder with brass on the tip. Or maybe with a backpack-like contraption! (Of course, none of this would actually work.) Ooh, I want to get a pocket watch and make it look like a red mushroom now! Thank you, Mehdia and Ironhill for giving advice. When I get around to actually making it all it should be fun.

I agree with Ironhill about making the Mario Sunshine pack. That would actually be really cool to see punked. And I wouldn't use just brass. Use all sorts of metals for a really awesome effect.

I wish I could make the sunshine pack, but I don't have a wii, so I can't play any of the recent Mario games. It'd feel like cheating if I made something from a game I know nothing about. Yea, I'm not gonna use all brass. I'm thinking only the tip will be made of brass for the flamethrower. The cylinder would be a silver metal, and the handle part, no matter how illogical it sounds for a flamethrower, would be wood. Or I could make it all out of wood and use this paint I have that makes things look metallic... then add the brass on the end... Hmm... maybe it could be a rectangle then... I'm just writing my thoughts as they come.

Mario Sunshine was for the GameCube actually. But I like the idea of the brass and silver. You might look into throwing some copper in there too. It can add a nice touch to it. And you could build part of it out of wood, but I would suggest painting it metallic or even using some of the thin metal sheeting to cover it. Then you could use cool nailheads to make it look riveted and all.

Gamecube?! (I'm bad at staying in the loop...) I have to get that one day! Anyway, I like your suggestions for the flamethrower! (Maybe I could add a little logo for the flame flower on it.) Also, I forgot to mention it, but I also like your idea for suspenders, even though they won't be seen. I already own a pair :geek: so it's not like I'd have to go out and buy some. If I can get my hands on Sunshine before January (When I plan on starting this.) I may look into making a Steampunkified Sunshine pack. (It already looks pretty Steampunk as is.) Thank you for all the advice!

My family is a huge bunch of gamers, and Mario games are my youngest brother's favorite ones, so I know a little about Mario^^
Glad you like the suggestions. I can't wait to see what you come up with.
