I'm planning on doing a cosplay of Alice from SyFy's 2009 mini series Alice, based on Alice in Wonderland. I'm a broke high school student who's been pretty much stuck doing the same costumes at every convention, so I really want a change. I've got everything planned out, and the only thing I was worried about was her jacket. http://www.spikytv.com/wp-content/uploads/120109_0813_SyfysALICEN1.png http://images2.fanpop.com/image/photos/9300000/Hatter-Alice-Syfy-Movie-the-mad-hatter-9374722-500-333.jpg

Typically, I'm somewhat of a cosplay purist. If it doesn't look like it did in the original, I don't do it. But I found a jacket that I LOVE that's really cheap and in my budget. The only thing is that it's much shorter than the one she wears in show. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Awesome-70s-VTG-Burgundy-Wine-Velvet-Fitted-Blazer-Jacket-XS-S-Boho-Slim-/140644053824?pt=US_CSA_WC_Outerwear&hash=item20bf09f340

Do you think it really matters? What are your feelings on the matter? Am I just being crazy about wanting it to be as perfect as possible?

I would wait until the new year, because that's when all the sales happen. Your chances of finding a more accurate coat on your budget increases. Also, check out as many thrift stores as you can. They typically have a high turn over rate, meaning they sell great items fast.

Nope, totally understand about being as perfect as you can with a cosplay, especially when it's from a tv show or film.
I've done Alice's outfit and, yes, I have the boots, too. The only piece I don't have is the jacket though, only because I haven't found anything inexpensive that looks the part well enough for my standards.
The only jacket I've found that looks really good and I can get it custom made is here: http://cosplaysky.com/syfy-miniseries-alice-in-wonderland-alice-long-purple-coat-costume.html

But it's in the triple-digits.
I would do what PSY suggested and check out thrift stores first. You never know what you might find! Good luck!

Yeah. I think I'll try out some of the local thrifts. I just wish we had some better stores in the area. All the goodwills and local second-hand shops don't have much of anything. Which is weird, since you'd think Austin would have a bunch of really awesome stuff. I'll keep looking. I think that until then, I'll probably just wrap a red bandana around my forearm like Rat did when Alice first got to Wonderland. Though I was really hoping for the jacket to ward off the cold. Thanks for the advice. I'll wait until the new year to look for the jacket and I'll check the thrifts. :)
