Here's a costume that I saw that I'd like to make sometime next year when I was watching Chobits earlier today. (Disc 5 DVD) This is only the side view though, I can get screencaps of the rest of the dress later...

Okay, what I'm wondering about is just how you would make those folds in her dress. (The ones at the bottom part of her dress and the ones sitting right on top of that part.)

I'd appreciate the help from anyone.

Thanks ^^

I'm not sure I understand what you mean about folds at the bottom of the dress. Do you mean the "ruffled" effect of her skirt? That is caused by the fullness of her skirt and the weight of the fabric; so it would need to be quite full around the hem, probably cut in a large oval. The "bustle" at the back of the skirt appears to be to be a swag of a separate piece of fabric, probably fastened either inside the bodice or at the skirt waistband. I definitely see this dress as at least two separate pieces.

I'm not quite sure what you mean, either.. The skirt needs to be almost a double circle skirt to get that much ruffle effect, and then the back is just going to have a length of cloth atttched to the waistband at either end for the bustley bit.

u mean the gathering? i would just cut the fabric extra wide and sew the top of the skirt with really big stitching then tie off one end pull the fabric along the thread untill its as tight as you want, then sew it all down with a regular stich. hope i helped! good luck!

I don't think straight gathers will accomplish that flowing effect at the hem. I definitely see this as a very large circle/oval shape, maybe even a double circle as Ashley suggests.

I agree that it's probably a double circle.. that's a lot of ruffles there. XD The funny thing is that that's probably gonna be the easiest part of making that dress. It's really cute, though, and if you can do it, you're that much of a better seamstress than I! :D

Personally, I like it better in white than in pink. ^_^
