View Full Version : Hotel Room Rate increases in 2004
According to the con's 'special' room rates here: http://www.acen.org/location.html
the reservation of a VIP suite has increased $150 a night! over last year!
....While I don't believe any of the rooms in the main tower changed at all.
I smell a conspiracy to perhaps be trying to discourage ACen's crowd from making use of the larger "party" rooms.

in theory yes it is, but everyone knows how to get around that little problem ;)
Um...? We do?
To be honest, I don't think the far towers are worth trudging back to constantly all day anyway. I think despite the constant busy-ness of the four main elevators, I'd rather get two rooms or a double-decker in the central area rather than the largest suites far away - it's just more "in" the con.

the way around the still suite prices is to have 10 plus people room with you and split the cost evenly

how early, before Acen, should someone reserve a room?... or is this a dumb question and all room have been reserved for 20 years in advance? :p
I'm iffy on whether I can finish my costume on time, given I start now and work my arse off until May (along with school, finding a job, etc.)... so... not 100% sure I'll be making it to Acen. Well, I suppose I could go regardless of whether I finish my costume or not. I just prefer a finished-costume-me. :D

i thought the rates actually went down?

That place is a hella expensive hotel. We stayed there for an extra 3 days last year to visit family, and the 3rd night wound up being something like $249 for that night alone. Problem was we didn't have much time to just pack up and move to a cheaper hotel so we bit the bullet.

The prices went down on the standard rooms, however they went up on the suites

Oh, you folks should pick up this sweet book about bargaining for perks and upgrages at hotels, airports, casinos and resturants. Do an Amazon search for something like "hotel airport upgrade" and you'll find it.
Just by asking, I got an AWESOME rate on a nice suite at the Doubletree (which I HIGHLY recommend if you don't mind a 15 minute walk through the pedestrian walkway to Acen). It's a little harder for cons, but if you plan far enough ahead (4+ months), you can get away with a lot. I've successfully bargained a lower rate at several East Coast and Midwest cons. It definitely can't hurt to try.

Yeah, it takes forever to walk back and forth from there to where stuff for the con is going on. I really hate how busy it is by those four main elevators though so I used to like it back in the towers more, but last year it was incredibly busy back there too. I thought ACen said they were supposed to be lowering the prices on all the rooms? That really sucks that they've gone up, going to ACen is expensive enough as it is for us. We don't need killer hotel fees making it worse. ; o ;

Yeah, the main elevators suck unless you are on the top floor. Anything lower than that and you have to wait for about 30 minutes to get on one that isn't filled to the top with fans.

I'm going along with a bunch of my gamer buddies, but I don't know if we'll be able to make it. We have to be the most disorganized bunch of people in the world. Half of us don't have enough money, one guy's not sure he'll even be in the state, and the rest...who knows. I'll go by myself if I have to and sleep in a friggin car. Damn, that's another problem. Only 2 of us have cars and they're small as hell. If I can't make it with any of these guys, would any of you mind if I tagged along with your group? Also, I'm working on a paper about the whole fan worship/geek culture. I have a thread going on the boards. Read there for more details. If any of you can contribute or know of people who might be interested in helping, please point them my way. Later!

When you say "tag along," do you mean hang out for a bit, stalk us all weekend, or stay in our hotel room? I'm sure some other people are confused about that too.

Tag along as in go with group, contribute to hotel room costs, stay in said hotel rooms....then follow you all home and then stalk you! Seriously, if the few in my group that have any means decide not to go cuz of the rest of the slackers, I'll contribute to anyone else's group and go with them.
