Hi im looking for advice on creating a costume similar to the sentinel for LARP (live action roleplay)

I saw a great one here http://30.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lwipluNKEA1qeclcao1_500.jpg

I have no experience creating costumes but have over a year until the costume needs to be done. I have no idea where to start though?
Any help would be appreciated

Yours sincerely

My initial post thread on this seems to have disappeared for some reason but if it returns then feel free to lock this one.

Welcome the Assassin's Creed forum! It's good that you're planning a year in advance since AC costumes and AC based costumes tend to be more complex than they look especially if you're going for accuracy and haven't sewn much before.

His costume looks to be a light weight cotton, but you may want to go with a medium weight if you're concerned about it looking shear. Linen, depending on it's weave, can be light weight and opaque so skin or other colors won't show through. If you're going for a period look I recommend linen over cotton, but get what you think looks right to you!

If you're planning on making stripes, you can set the sewing machine to the zig zag stitch and have at it! It'd be easier than pain stakingly painting them by hand with fabric paint or sewing down trim. You could also look for pin striped fabric to save some time and work.

For the leather parts you can buy some gloves, belts, and boots from consignment stores. Do so soon since it's winter and boots and gloves are sessional items! If you want to make your own out of real leather prepare to shell out A LOT of money to Tandy Leather Factory or other leather supply stores.

There's the more affordable option of pleather/vinyl (not the super shinny stuff). Avoid pleather that's has no skin texture (grain) if you can, it looks too costumey unless you want it to look like that. If you can't avoid it you can add texture to it afterwards with a sponge or a rag using spray paint while its still wet or shoe polish. You can also weather it this way so it looks like it's been used. The mini-spaulder on the cosplayer's left shoulder seems to be leather, but you could probably pull something together with pleather, craftfoam (foamie) padding on the inside, and some painted detail on top to get a similar look.

And if you want to ask the guy that made that actual costume;

This is him:

He's French, but his English is good! ^_^

Thanks for the advice.

I have zero experience sewing or creating clothes. Are there any guides you would recommend so I can learn how to?

I think the tunic would be a good start.
I found this for sale and was thinking that adapting it might be a possibility.

Thanks for the advice

I think I will start with the tunic. I haven't a clue about making clothes though and don't really know where to start on the tunic.

I did find a tunic for sale that appears to be quite similar to it

They also have some other tunics that may be suitable.

*pops in very late*

First is to get a sewing machine unless you want to spend hours on end hand sewing everything. There are some good starter ones around or under $100 you just need to look around. If you can snag one from a friend or family member who isn't using it, go for it! I'm pretty much self taught with tutorials online (youtube!) and a nice thick book I've flipped through a number or times to figure out what could be done with sewing!

The Sentinel isn't in assassin garb but here: http://www.assassinscostume.com/home/ is a really good jumping off point! I pretty much learned the basics here and then did my own thing.

Here's another site to get you started: http://www.reddawn.net/costume/patterns.htm
It's very minimal in pics, which makes it hard to understand at first, but there's a lots of good info there if you're up to making patterns from scratch that is...

The tunic you found will do well! :) You wouldn't need to alter it at all unless you really wanted to. Good luck on your project!
