View Full Version : Steampunk maid?

I know this sounds a bit odd, but that's why I'm having trouble with it. An upcoming con I'm going to has a steampunk theme this year, and they want the servers at the maid cafe to steampunk-ify their costumes. I'm sort of at a loss beyond goggles and boots.

would be great with a steampunk vacuum or steampunk maid accessory. Is there anyway to "steampunk" a feather duster? maybe a bronze like handle and peacock feathers? Or like a steampunked swiffer sweeper. how about a leather like apron instead of a white lace one?
That's all i got, I'm gotta my element. :-)

Those are awesome suggestions from pinyocosplay. You could also carry a brass tea set, and instead of goggles wear some glasses that have the various magnifying glasses on them or something.

I'll actually be serving food/drinks in a maid cafe, so I won't have hands free to carry props. The hair ornaments will probably work better.

things like an underbust corset with brown and steel, with a white puffy shirt seems like it would work?this kind of look dress thing would suit steampunk if you change some colors and things.-->http://www.superhappycashcow.com/pic/cosplay/Maid/B%20941/941-6.jpg
from what i can think of, the maid outfit should have more brown or bronze and i think of things like this-->http://fc05.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2010/294/a/d/steampunk_maid__final_by_aina_albi-d317tny.jpg
of course though, i really wouldn't know if this is good advice.:D

you could do those tiny top hats, those are always good for steampunk! you could also add lots of lace and get those fishnet leggings and fingerless gloves are always a good touch. Good Luck! :)

Oooh! Feather Duster holster! Make like a leather bandolier holding various supplies! A spray bottle. A cleaning cloth. A feather duster!

Look up Victorian maids, then alter like you would for any steampunk character. You could play it up with a sub character like a wind-up doll or cyborg. Corsets, especially underbust corsets, will work well. You can also play up your shoes. Use props that are hands free and will help with the job rather than get in the way, like an apron.
You could also make a maid-inspired hair accessory, like a hair pin feather duster

Since you will be serving food, maybe a metal tray. I hate to say it but if there were gears attached around the edge as decorations to give it an industrial feel and painted in brass or steel, it might work well.

i like the feather duster idea and you totally can go hands-free with one. it's not unusual to see them hanging from an apron. you could even hang it on a brass chain around your waste or a shorter length of chain attached to the apron itself with some gromets or something.
for the duster itself you can just get a cheap one and very lightly spraypaint the feathers with metallic gold paint, or making one with peacock feathers like pinoycosplay suggested would be really cool.
