It's the company...all the events would be dumb and boring if you didn't have either friends from back home or friends that you met at the con to enjoy it with...or at least that's what I think.

I agree! cons are fun if you're in the company of your comrades...or if you happen to meet some interesting people there. One year at expo we got little fortune thingies with advice from other expo go-ers. This person Shogun said that a stranger in line was a friend you haven't met yet. Try talking to the people around you. chances are you're going to be in line for awhile might as well chat it up with someone.
Freebies are also great. -_^ I convinced a friend of mine to go simply by showing her the stash I got.
I also think if you cosplay it makes the event a little more fun...although you can still have fun just going, when you cosplay you get to be in character and it's another great way to meet people and you can exchange tips too. ^_^
have fun. Nyo. >^_^<

con fun is measured by how many corporate sponsers you can get! ^__^

that's all i'm there at a con for. to be with friends and meet up with friends i haven't seen in a while...that and a couple other things, like AMVs...but mostly friends

For me, it's having fun in costume with my friends, both old and new. I am going to Animazement and I hope to see ya there. Meeting cosplayers online and then meeting them in person for the first time at a con is a great experience. They won't know you at first, but then you tell them your sign on name and it's "OH! I know you!". It's hilarious.
I went to my first (and only ;_; ) full blast anime convention a year ago. (Akakon 2001) A hole bunch of people say it was horrible and that things were late and stuff like that... but the thing is that I met so many people, became really good and close friends to 3 other people there... and I got to share this experience with my friend who I met a year prior to our first anime convention... If it wasn't for the AKAKON, and for the people I've met, me and my friend would probably be still sitting in hobby shops every saturday playing trading card games like we were before we discovered anime conventions.
I honestly think that the people who attend, the people who have the huge positive attitude towards things... they are what make anime conventions worth going to. When me and my friend first went to AKAKON, we were so surprised with how everyone was being so nice, and talkative and stuff.
The next best thing is probably the cosplay. Cosplay is something that you can do all year around too which is fun ^;^ (And also sometimes frustrating  ) but making costumes, going to conventions and getting compliments would be great. (I've gotten so many compliments on my Lulu costume when I went to VCON.. a small sci-fi convention, and I didn't even have the belts yet. ^^; ) When I was at AKAKON, I was Sailor Moon. It was a horrible costume, but everyone loved it cause I was a guy... dressed as Sailor Moon. People who went to the convention that I bump into around town (surprisingly, I do.. it's scary!) talk about that male Sailor Moon XD They get so shocked when I tell them that was me lol... it was priceless.
I can't wait for my next convention. Also, ignore all critisism from people about the conventions because the chances are that with the con go'ers there, you'll have a blast.

Im agreeing with the so far general, " the people make the con" like idea. I like going to buy new anime stuff I can't usually get here, or online, and watch AMV, and etc. But the most fun thing is having mass intake of stupid fun in costume and meeting cool people while at it. I mean, you just meet cool people, and makes the day fun and everything especially if you end up hanging with them and such ^_^v...

The company, definitely. ^___^ And everyone having fun and interacting in costume.
Also, smaller cons like Ani-Magic and Yaoi-con tend to be more "relaxacon" than the bigger ones, and that's actually really nice. Less stress.

I actually prefer Animazement to Otakon. Its smaller and you actually get to meet people, instead of running around on various different floors of convention center trying to be 2 places at once.

oh come on guys! you act like commercialism doesn't make conventions fun!
I love hanging with friends. There is a set group that I am a part of that consists of my best friend, my brother and his best friend and the four of us have so much fun together. We laugh, stay up late, freak out about cool stuff together, help eachother with costumes, and basically smile the whole weekend. Its so cool to be with a group that I am just going to get along with no matter what.
Other than having friends, to quote many girls, size dosent matter. I enjoy the smaller cons as much as AX. The only difference is I plan to wear my more impressive costumes to the bigger ones (just because of Hall Cosplay!)
Sidenote: Im so psyched for AX now! I just reserved my room that can fit 8 people so my friend and I get to bring our boyfriends! and corrupt them further! (Poor little buggers barily knew what anime, let alone cosplay, was until they met us!)

When is AX!!?? I need to make all the reservations!
Cons are just great fun to go to and hang out with like minded people. I haven't met a soul in person from this board, but you bet I will have by the end of next summer ^_^ That's what makes them so fun, meeting new people.

I think that the people there make a big difference! When I went to my first con (just in mid-october), a local one, and I had a lot of fun! It was a tiny con (less than 70 people there), and I met a lot of new and interesting people. I think that cosplaying helps, because I started talking to a bunch of people because I was in costume and they commented on it. Also, there was (the most at one time) 10 cosplayers there, so if you met another cosplayer... they were practically automatically your new con friend ^_^!

Cons are all about friends and meeting new people for me. I prefer the big ones to the little ones, generally (AX is #1!! Yeah!!!). Cosplay, for me, is a way to meet people. ^_^

I myself think that it's the events and staff that also make a con. We have a local con here that's really a dog & pony show. They don't have the care for the con-goers nor the people you would want to see. And they JUST had a costume contest! This con has been going on for about over 10 years now! And NOW they have a costume contest??
That's one of the many reasons I chose Anime Central as our "Con of the year", we can only afford to go to one con, so I wanted to check out one that would have more of my intrests in mind. And boy, I wasn't dissapointed for a minute!
But, having friends with you also makes a con great. Besides, who else can you get to do those crazy con stuff with you but your friends?

i rather enjoyed animazement. it was my first con, and i had a blast. just going, showing off all the hard work on your costume, meeting people in real life... it's brilliant.
i've heard that big cons tend to be really impersonal. :x

Bringing friends defently makes it fun and that gos for almost anything. Also cosplay makes a con twice as nice^_^
11-06-2002, 04:40 PM
Yeah, got to agree with the sentiment. Its more about who you hang with at the con than the con itself.

...and of course that one piece of merchandise you find that you have been looking the world over for!!:D

Recognizing people from the photo galleries at cons is now something I also find very amusing. At comic con I saw this Saitou flitting about and thought, "My stars! That's Eurobeat king!" I also saw people like Nessa and Kitty that I came to recognize later. And then at animagic I saw all sorts of people that I recognized and was fortunate enough to meet for the first time.

The bad thing is when you run out of money and THEN find the merchandise you've been looking for. >_< Oh how many times has that happened to me.
11-06-2002, 11:24 PM
Wow! So, it's the people!!!! Hmm......i thought so! NOW, i must gather a crowd of my peeps so we can terrorize AZ!!!!

wai wai animazement is THA BEST! ^.~ lol
What makes a con great is not sweating the small stuff ^.^ and EATING! dont skip lunch ^.~
11-07-2002, 06:18 PM
yes...food...>_>....we didn't eat much during AX, we used our money to buy more anime. Not the best idea...remember kids, eat. Food...NOT THE ANIME!

lol. eating is good. i didn't eat at all during AZ 01 and at AZ02, i brought all this food with me and made a mess o_o; i can't win for losing...hehe

what has to make the con great is, friends, people who love the same thing you do and just everything else in all it's atmosphere :D :D
it's just a common intrest thing that you notice others can relate to you-
if it weren't for those crazy three day cons i wouldn't have met a lot of people-
but i hope your first con will be the best experience-

I woulld have to agree that small cons are the nicest. (So are ones with competent staffs and respectful people who don't try and vandalize the hotel, etc.) I prefer small cons in the middle of nowhere especially, since the costume contests tend to be smaller and better run, and the hotel the con is held at (as well as it's surrounding stores and restaurants) seem easier to get to. And you don't have to stand around in line forever, waitin' for stuff. Always a plus...
I've been to two conventions in my life, Gencon 2001 and 2002. I am also going next year ( if money and time permits). it's really hard to call me a " cosplayer" Since gencon is a game convention, most of the friends with me are dressed in their normal attire. Still, there is a costume contest, and many people waundering around in their own costumes. When I wore my Naru costume, a few people asked me to stop for pictures. It's very entertaining if you like games, sci fi, anime, fantasy, or anything remotely geekish.
And I agree, what makes a con fun is who you are with. I had alot of fun with my friends both times, except when a certain person that doesn't like me joined us..
