View Full Version : Harry Potter Lolita Needs More...

Cowbell... jk, My outfit needs more Harry Potter influence/accessories and I need some help to make or find some. I'm going for a HP Lolita Professor *not sure what I'd be a professor of...* I chose to be a Professor because I'm split between being in Slytherin and Gryffindor so I made my tie a symbol of all of the houses to represent Hogwarts instead of just one house.

I have an antique looking ring with the Dark Mark in it and I'm in the process of making a mini witch hat.

This is what I have so far*without the ring and hat*:

Does anyone have any suggestions? I would really appreciate it! Thanks ♥

Omg, this is too adorable! (And you've just given me an idea for an HP lolita group xD)

If you want more oompf, have you considered feathers? Not chicken feathers, but something large and visually striking like pheasant tails, long rooster tails (I forget what they're called), ostrich feathers, or even shaped turkey rounds? You can dye them in any color you want (if you get white feathers) if you so choose. I also see a lack of lace. Maybe you could add some at the sleeves or on the hat you're making (along with the feathers).

I've got nothing other than that right now, but seriously, you've put another costume idea in my head, and for that I thank you :D

@Stormraven24- Thank you for your kind words! ♥ and you are welcome!

I was considering adding peacock feathers to my hat with the addition of some lace. I went fabric shopping a week ago and found some soft black lace with gold accents (What a steal!).

As far as other lacey things go, I was contemplating on buying some lace gloves, but I really don't want to buy some and end up with costumey cheap gloves.
*Edit* Well I ended up buying these... So we will see...

I'm trying to come up with something that would make me look more like a professor. Hmm... and leggings/tights. I'm also having a bit 'o trouble with those as well.

Thanks again for your reply :)

Well, you'll definitely need a robe ;)

As for peacock feathers, I love them, but they don't really say "professor" to me. In my opinion (you're perfectly within your rights to disregard my ramblings), peacock feathers are more for aristocracy or "purebloods", the people who flaunt their wealth and nobility without really giving back to society. More "common" types of birds like pheasants would be more down-to-Earth, imo. Of course, ostrich feathers aren't exactly cheap either, but they'd add a fluffiness to key points of the outfit (plus the fact that they were used as quills back in the day doesn't hurt).

Yeah, I'm rambling. I didn't realize how tired I am xD

Anyway, yes! I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with this! Like I said, it's super cute!

A cute cape would look really nice, as opposed to the traditional robe, which would cover the majority of the costume. Sort of like the ones the Beauxbatons students wore maybe, but black and perhaps with some gold or silver designs. It needs a little whimsy. Hogwarts is a very whimsical place. Plus, I think that you need to break the black up just a little, or else it might all blend together. A nice little magical design on a cute cape would look great with what you've already got. :)

Well I'm going for more of an aristocratic look and with my dark mark ring, I think it would work with the 'pureblood' stance since I have that Death Eater flair. Either way, I will definitely have some feathers in my hat! :)

I wouldn't want to do an entire robe so that would be perfect! Like a capelet? Bah... The convention is about a month away and I don't have a sewing machine to make one, but if I can buy a basic black one I can definitely hand sew some gold/silver borders/designs on it. I completely agree about all of the black. I want to add something to the middle around my waist but I'm not sure what. ?__? Thank you both for your advice! ♥

Cape, Cape, Ceverus, Cape... Gr! I can't find a capelet anywhere. I don't want the ones with sleeves since my blouse has poofy sleeves. If there was a no-sew pattern *Or minimal sewing req* out there, that would be fantastic.

Lemme try and find the one I used for an outfit of mine.

Edit: Found it! http://mccallpattern.mccall.com/m3033-products-988.php?page_id=109 It's really a very simple pattern with only a bit of sewing involved; the only reason mine took 8 hours to make was because I used faux fur and there's a special way you have to handle that. If you just use "regular" fabric it should take much less time. Best of luck!

Thanks for the link! I'll see if my fabric store has that pattern so I could get it for cheap. I'd probably use E without the beads.

Well I looked at a few places and I like these: http://www.etsy.com/listing/90563604/black-and-grey-circle-capelet?ref=v1_other_2

http://www.etsy.com/listing/90564811/black-lace-circle-capelet?ref=v1_other_1

I think the first one would work better with my outfit and the 3rd would add more flair... Hmm

Agreed. I like the silver and black. That will go with my boots and corset :)

That caplet looks perfect. Much better than a robe, for sure. Plus, I think it goes with the Lolita style a lot better while still being a little witchy. :)

http://i42.tinypic.com/vbznd.jpg Here's a progress pic of my hat! :) I'm fairly pleased with it so far. I've been so busy but I finally have been making some progress. It's made out of card board (from a box of snack cakes...mmmm...) and felt. I sewed on the lace and now I have the bottom of the hat to finish as well as adding the accessories! That will be the best part! I have feathers, more lace, and a buckle to add. After adding those I'll consider adding more but I don't want to over do it.

Oh and that's my kitty Eisbär. ♥

Thanks!

I'm still debating what else I'm going to add to this costume. It needs something else... I just got the capelet in the mail and its gorgeous! I'm still waiting on some gloves I bought but these are the ones I ordered http://i39.tinypic.com/65bghz.jpg
I think once I get them in I'll alter them slightly. I don't like how the ribbon looks.

Other than that, I really don't have any more ideas on what to add that would make it borderline lolita and Harry Potter World style.

Ok so my hat is almost done. I just need to add feathers and the bottom but I don't know which feathers I like more. Here's a few pics:
http://i43.tinypic.com/16m690.jpg
http://i44.tinypic.com/ncefyd.jpg
http://i42.tinypic.com/33u4j2p.jpg
and here is the other one:
http://i42.tinypic.com/30m0a5x.jpg

If anyone has any input I wold really appreciate it! I really like how the black and white ones flow, but I think the other feathers colors adds more to the hat because it has a gold tint. Hm... I love both of them! >.<

*UPDATE*
I went with the first one because I my tie has the Hogwarts crest on it and it represents all of the houses so I was thinking that the peacock feather has green and blue to represent Ravenclaw/Slytherin, and the gold pendant and yellowish gold and black lace for Gryffindor and Hufflepuff. It's a stretch, but oh well. I just finished the bottom and glued on some alligator clips and adjusted the feather. This is me wearing it: http://i43.tinypic.com/mkj9yr.jpg I look grumpy and my hair is so messy from taking the hat on and off and adjusting the feather.

This is the first hat I've ever made so I'm pleased with the results... It's certainly a learning process. Hot glue can be your friend or your worst nightmare. x__x

I'm partial to where the feather is. Sometimes I really like it, but then I also think it needs to be messed with and placed differently. Any suggestions?

I think that it looks really good. I love the placement of the feather, and the buckle works so well. It's like a traditional witch hat with a regal twist. I happy you went with the peacock feather instead of the black and white. The black and white looks nice and all, but it's more Halloween-y and less "I'm-a-pureblood-witch-and-a-professor-RESPECT-me!" Also, I had a thought, looking back at your original pictures. You should get some fun stockings. Because even though the skirt is long and the boots are high (I LOVE those boots, by the way), there still might be a chance that you could see a little of the skin, especially at a convention, where crazy things are bound to happen, like running and general hilarity. I don't know. I think it would be cool. :)

Thanks a bunch :) i was really doubting my feather and then falling in love with it over and over again. I'm happy with it now. Fun stockings, eh? I was going to use some white lace tights lol but what fun kind of tights did you have in mind? I was also considering bloomers but I don't have any. Boo. That would've been cute.

Maybe stripes, a la Wicked Witch of the East? Just to add a little kookiness to the costume on the off chance it shows. Nothing too outrageous, but just something to add some playfulness to it. It doesn't draw too much attention, but is just a bit of a surprise.

pocky_penguin66

That would be pretty cute! Hm I might see if I can get a cheap pair. I'm still waiting on my gloves and I need a bag/purse but I don't have much money to spend. I really had my heart set on a bat purse but those are really expensive. I'll have to go thrift shopping soon

patriciarakel
04-03-2012, 11:24 PM
Maybe if you can't get a bat purse right now, try going for an older style ladies' handbag. Like the kind of bag that you picture a grandmother carrying. You know, one that looks like it's made of old turn-of-the-century drapes or carpet (but in a pretty way!). Maybe in a similar style to Mary Poppins' bag (I think it's called a traveling or traveler's bag). If you could find one, that is. Definitely go thrifting and see what they have. Oh, the undiscovered jewels of second hand shops. :)

pocky_penguin66

Thanks for the suggestion :) I went thrift store shopping and unfortunately, I didn't really come up with anything I liked. Boo >.< I still have another week to find something.

I finally put on everything, but I didn't put on any makeup *lazy day today...like almost every other day lol* and I'm still missing my lace gloves. It has been pretty chilly lately so I decided to try the outfit with a different blouse that is long sleeved and this is it together:
http://i44.tinypic.com/2mp030p.jpg It is difficult to take a full body pic by yourself, so the bottom was cut off, but the boots are the same and I had white lacy tights underneath. Oh, and here is a pic of my ring: http://i43.tinypic.com/1zbc46e.jpg Stupid crappy camera. Oh well. :)

I'm happy I put it all together before the con because I found out that my hat needs adjustments. >.< I glued the alligator clips in a wrong position so it doesn't look and clip right on my hair... So now I have to pry them off and reglue them. Darn.

I have to say that I'm soooo jealous of your amazing work. It looks simply brilliant. Don't sweat the small stuff. What you've got right now is great. I'm actually kind of partial to the new sleeves. They look very pure-blood. I almost think it looks fine without any gloves now that you've chosen longer sleeves, because now you have a lot less skin showing, so having the hands bare actually looks really nice. I wish I could see it IRL. :)

Awww ^.^ Thanks! It really means a lot. I'm very partial to the sleeves now too. I don't like how my other blouse has awkward puffs in the sleeves. I don't feel like pulling them down all of the time to make them look right. I'll definitely take pics!

So my hat did not clip on my head right so I popped off the alligator clips and bought a black headband and glued that onto the hat. It looks cute, but I won't be able to tilt my head down without it falling off so I have to be careful. Also the tips are kind of pinchy and hurt my head. :( Bah.... But at least it sits well :P

patriciarakel
04-25-2012, 09:54 PM
Awww. That kind of sucks. It looked great. To fix the pinchy bit, maybe get some black crafting felt and glue some to the tips. That might cushion the pinching a little.
