I'm going to SDCC this year and I want to go as adult Aang from the Legend of Korra! I've never made a costume before (or anything else really for that matter) and no idea where to start.

I have some screen grabs of Aang, should I get my own measurements/base it off my clothes and get some cotton cloth?

I want to base off this picture: http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/460360_301803666578243_1896358265_o.jpg But I want to wait for more screen grabs of Aang...

Any help would be great, thanks!

Hey there! Maybe I can help a little bit if you're serious about making your first costume. This is a good one to start with, because it's a fairly straight forward design

Since you say you've never made anything before, I'll do my best to be thorough and straight-forward. (:

First, fabric: A lot of folks that I know of like to use cotton solids (but not broadcloth) in the quilters section of fabric stores for their avatar costume if they're on a budget- the colors are usually perfect. Cotton wrinkles however, so you have to be sure to always prewash your fabric and iron, iron, iron! If you have the money, try going for a linen blend (for that more "realistic" air monk look) or if you want something that won't wrinkle so easily, try some suiting fabric like a twill or a gabardine. Tenzin and Aang's robes are heavy and dramatic and billow in the wind, so be sure to get a nice fabric! Don't skimp on this step.

Second, Patterns! I highly recommend using a pattern and modifying it for your first costume. I'd suggest one of these (http://www.simplicity.com/p-2272-misses-men-teen-costumes.aspx) or (http://www.simplicity.com/p-3069-mens-costumes.aspx) for the red outer robe. Something like this (http://www.simplicity.com/p-2128-adult-costumes.aspx) will get you the yellow and lighter red part. And for his pants, genie pants (http://www.simplicity.com/p-1946-costumes.aspx).

Finally, references! Here are all the shots of the "flashback" sequences in high definition: http://imgur.com/a/gnwj6#0 I think the major differences between Tenzin and Aang's robes are that Aang doesn't have a gold pin on his robe, and has boots (similar to what he wore in a:tla) instead of Tenzin's short shoes.

A Grue, thank you so much! You are awesome! If you're at SDCC this year I'll thank you in person!

For Aang's season 3 costume would I just cut off the right shoulder and have a sleeve like in this picture?

Ah, alas! I won't be there. I'm an east coast gal, I'm afraid. Have fun, though!!

For season 3 Aang, just make a short orange toga and cut it asymmetrically on the bottom. The yellow part underneath is just a big rectangular sash laying over his should and across his chest. Since we don't see the bottom of it, just sew it to the underside of the orange part. Characters in cartoons don't always have costumes that make sense, hah.
