View Full Version : Wanting opinion on Kaede from Inuyasha

hello yall- this is my first post! While I have been costuming for years, I am just getting started in cosplay. I have the policy that I don't want to dress up as characters that don't have a similar body type, so I thought I'd try Kaede. I mean everyone does Kikyo, but I have yet to see a Kaede. Now here's my question- I'm in my 20's. so obviously I don't look her age. So should I go with a grey/white wig...or should I go with the black wig and be a young Kaede? I mean I'll have the eye patch and stuff, but would it be silly to be "young" Kaede or should I just go for what she looks like in the manga? Thanks.

I think if you can make the grey/white wig look convincing, it would be better to do that and it would be a little more recognizable. It's really up to you, though. I don't think a 'young' Kaede would be silly at all. In the series you see her as both a kid and an old woman, so cosplaying her as 'kaede in her 20s' wouldn't be too strange either.

I would go to a store (if you have one nearby) that sells wigs, and try on a grey one. The store in my area sells plenty of grey wigs, and quite a few of them resemble Kaede's grey hair. If you try it on, you can decide whether you like the grey wig or a black wig better.

If you don't have a wig store nearby, then I have no idea. :)

Would the grey wig still be cool if I don't do old age make-up? I can't even do my everyday type of makeup right, so I plan on staying as FAR away from character makeup as possible.

If you just do normal makeup (for photo purposes) then I think it would be fine. Putting on fake wrinkles would probably look a little strange, unless it was done super-professionally.

I can't do everyday makeup well either, since I only started worrying about it when I saw a pic of me from a convention, and I looked hideous. Since then I've put some time and money into buying simple stuff like eyeliner and non-shiny-face powdery stuff. Makes my face look less splotchy and weird. I'm staying away from costumes that require more makeup and skill for now.

I'm still waiting for my Kikyo wig to come in... I've only got 11 days before the con to get the wig, style it, and finish my arrow quiver. Arg.

About the only two cents I would have to add is that there may be some who don't clue into the eyepatch and would mistake a "young Kaede" for Kikyo at twenty paces. I've known people to make stupider mistakes over more obvious costume parts! If you do it well, and present yourself well, there would be no need to worry about makeup.
