View Full Version : What kind of gun would a steampunk hunter carry?

I have an idea for steampunking up a character who is a hunter, and replacing her bow and arrows with a gun. What would be convincing for a hunting type gun or rifle?

The kind of gun I would love to carry in a steampunk ensemble is a blunderbuss. :D But I don't think that's a hunting gun, as you can't shoot at a target accurately from a distance. It sprays projectiles in a large cone shaped area inside of which people hope not to be standing.

There's also the problem that just basing the thing off a Victorian hunting rifle might run afoul of convention weapon rules -- at least one con I go to doesn't allow replicas of "modern" weapons, which I think they define as ... post-American civil war? and later. Presumably this is to avoid having people walking around at a con with something that could be mistaken for a real working gun.

I guess I'll just be trying to cobble together something that looks like it could shoot straight over a long distance, and other than that I can make it out of anything vaguely gun-shaped. I'd still love some suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Well you could do a mix of gun and bow and do a hand held pistol grip cross bow.
Honestly depends on what you're hunting haha.

Ooooooh. Crossbow is an awesome idea. Gotta think about this one some more.

Okay, here's the idea.

It's Artemis, the ancient Greek goddess of hunting and wildlife. She wears a short mannish chiton, carries a bow and arrows, and usually has either a stag or a hound at her side.

Steampunked, a crossbow would be good, but I think a Victorian big-game gun might be more over-the-top and obvious. Also a pith helmet.

She's not only a huntress but also a protector of wildlife. In one version of her myth she has to kill Orion, a hunter who killed animals willy-nilly and bragged that he could kill any animal on Earth.

So her logical targets in an alt-universe Victorian world would be the great white hunters (for a fictional version see H. Rider Haggard's Allan Quatermain, later repurposed by Alan Moore). Colonizing countries sent these guys to Africa to exterminate animals that would interfere with development and agriculture (ecology and local hunter-gatherer lifestyles be damned). If Artemis was still around she'd have been pissed right off.
