Here's my finished Spike outfit. The collar and right lapel were removed, as well as the sleeves shortened. Blue satin added for cuffs and for new lapel outer.

Well, It's my first costume and I'm satisfied with it. I think she (family friend who makes clothes and raises collies) did a terrific job.

She also made me a tie, since I didn't have a skinny one.

I'm still waiting on my green hair-dye. I haven't gotten it in the mail yet. My hair stylist said that they didn't have any green dye, so if it doesn't get here soon enough, I'll have to do some desperate searching.

I think it looks good.

Few things I noticed. My opinion would be that the blue satin is a bit too light (stands out a bit too much) but i'm not looking at a reference image right now. just memory. The yellow shirt's great. Really, the colour of the satin was all that stuck in my head when I looked at the pictures. (you've got the poses down pretty well too ^_^)

I'm guessing you'll be ratting your hair a bit? Nitpicky would say a bit too short, but if you're brave enough to dye your hair green (you do know that stuff doesn't come out right? *has horror stories*) then I'm not gonna even go there ;) I chickened out and bought a wig rather than dye/cut my hair, :P

um... i think that's all i was gonna say (minus the tangents) and now I should shut up before I write a book...

I remember what else. If you're in a time crunch there's a store called Sally's beauty supply (or something like that). As far as I know they're all over the U.S. (if you live here....). Anyway, they sell green hair dye. They're one of the suppliers for salons and stuff. (in other words they sell professional quality hair junk :P ).

Looked good to me. The satin does seem a bit shiny/out of place, but I think the color if it is ok, and it's well sewn. It will probably look less bright on photos from a well lit area.

One thing I noticed, though, was that your pants are not the same color. I understand the mix-and-match make it work cosplay, but it stood out to me (well, not stood out, but i was checking for it). Suits look better when the colors are the same (which is impossible to find unless you find an entire blue suit, which is rare...).

And the poses look good! Although, about the green hair - I don't think his hair is suppsoed to be green-green, more of a black with green tint. But that's only my personal opinion. ^^ Some drugstores might sell stuff like Manic Panic, or more temporary color. Check out the hair and wigs forum for more information (I assume that's where it would be, if anywhere).

Yeah I thought it was a little light (it looks darker in person), but it was the closest they had at the fabric store, and it seemed to match the pictures I took with me. In any case, no one's tv settings are the same anyway.

The hair dye I bought is a dark green, and my hair stylist said that it should work well with my natural hair colour. Yes, I'm familiar with the phrase "not "green" green". I think I've been saying it for the past 2 weeks. 8-] My hair may not be quite dark enough, but I'm not darkening my hair colour, I like being a dirty blonde. Anyway, the dye said it's semi-permanent lasting 20 washings. I don't mind it lasting longer than a week (which is all I'd need it to last), It'd be an interesting change-up. :-}

My hair is about 2 inches long on the top, and about an inch and a half on the sides. It ain't perfect, but it'll do.

Oh yeah, by the way, those are just some shorts I had on. The slacks I'm going to wear match better. I can only imagine what people would say if I had posted the pictures of me wearing the jacket with olive green shorts! :-p

I wasn't able to get slacks with the jacket as I found the latter at at a thrift store, and it didn't have pants with it. But they wouldn't have fit anyway.

yay! looks awesome! Good job! Im happy that there are still Cowboy Bebop cosplayers. go you! two thumbs up.

ooooooooo, you're cute :D :p

Ok, but seriously though, it's great! Meh, the yellow shirt is a little pale for my tastes, but other than that, it's good!

Why thank you :-)

The shirt looks pale in the picture, but that's because of the lighting. It's almost as yellow as a yoohoo label, but not quite.

I think it looks really good. Especially if this is your first cosplay! Wow!
Are you planning on wearing this to a con or what?

05-23-2004, 12:45 AM
Pretty cool. One thing when buying a wig, don't buy a curly one. I don't care what anyone says. After looking though tons and tons of Spike reference pictures and screencaps his hair is NOT, I repeat NOT CURLY.

There is nothing curly about it period. It's more like straight and basically puffed up. I'll argue to the ends of the earth that it isn't curly. So yeah, its not curly. :-D Hope that helps.

I'm wearing this to Animazement in Durham NC next week.

I'll be dyeing my hair this time, although I've thought about a wig. Yes, I agree that Spike's hair isn't curly.

Hey, like the outfit! Spike's my favorite character from anime EVER!

Only thing I can critique is the use of the green hair dye... Personally, when I see other cosplayers with the green hair, it just kinda looks weird. I know, in the show it looks like he has green hair, but I don't know, I think thats just the animator's way of showing his hair has dimension. Now in the movie, if you've notiticed, his hair has a bluish tint, which I personally think is way hotter. I have 2 Spike action figures, and one has the green tint and the other the blue and the blue one looks soooo much better. So when my boyfriend cosplays Spike, which we are planning to at the next con, he's gonna dye his hair really dark black and then blue. But, hey, since you already ordered the green, go for it, just remember next time, blue is hotter. (^^)

See you Space Cosplayer!!!

I think you did a very nice job for your first cosplay. You'll have to take some pictures once you get the green in your hair. =P I remember when I used to dye my hair blue (I have the same color hair as you) it would turn green and then it would take forever to get out, hopefully for you the color will come out when it says it will.

So when my boyfriend cosplays Spike, which we are planning to at the next con, he's gonna dye his hair really dark black and then blue.

It really doesn't work as well as you would think. I have natural dark brown hair and I dyed it black. Then I dyed blue over it and it only occasionally has a blue shine, but more than anything else it's black. my $.02

05-23-2004, 11:44 PM
Yeah, that black with the blue tint? (so it shines blue when its in the sun?) Thats what he was planning on doing. Rawr! hehe

05-24-2004, 10:17 PM
the point I was making is that it doesn't work very well. The only time it really showed decent was in the moonlight. And even then it wasn't very good. Maybe just try a dark blue. They have a midnight blue dye available.

Spike's hair is brown. Why it looks green: if you've ever dyed your hair brown, you know that sometimes it turns out green. There you go.

Even if his hair isn't brown, Spike cosplayers look much better with brown hair than green.

05-26-2004, 03:57 PM
I really don't get why people think Spikes hair is brown, or "brown-green", as I've seen in practically ALL of the maybe....five or so Bebop fanfics I've read?.

It's definitely dark green. Not brown at all. If I saw a Spike cosplayer with brown hair, I would assume he was just too lazy to get the hair color right.

Why it looks green: if you've ever dyed your hair brown, you know that sometimes it turns out green
......wouldn't that mean that your hair actually WAS green because the dye got messed up?

His hair definitely looks green in all those reference pics.

Anyway, I think your costume looks really good! The shiny-ness of the light blue parts kinda bugs me, but other than that, it looks as perfect as physically possible!

I've decided not to dye my hair, as I never received it in the mail. The hairdresser found another dark green, but it didn't look right, and I think it burned a little. Anyway, she picked up some dark green hair cement which should work fine. I tell you what, I'm never buying anything from funkyshop.com again. It's been 2 weeks and I never even received a confirmation e-mail.

I'd call them about that if I were you.

The number is right on the contact page.

Yeah that's a good idea.

Iron down the satin sleeve cuffs.

Hair - for that dark-green-kind-of-olive look but still kind of natural, I use olive-toned spray dye lightly over a very dark brown wig. Worked great for my Shuura costume (from Kenshin.)

01-18-2009, 03:38 AM
I like it. Well done.

01-19-2009, 08:27 PM
yes i like the costume
the only thing is i would invest in a wig insteadf of dying your hair. its not long enough and it just brings the costume together when you have a nice wig
