If my information is correct, there are about 25 cosplay.com members that are going to Dragon*con. I'm curious to find out how many will be entering the Dawn Lookalike Contest on Saturday night? I've heard a few rumours that some of the members will be entering, so I wanted to start a thread for us to get to know each other so we can say hi and whatnot, talk about the contest, costumes we'd be doing, advice, etc.

So anyways, HI! This will be my third time entering, and I am really excited. I'm a member over at Linsner.com, as well as the Dawn Lookalike Community on LiveJournal. I've never placed, but that doesn't matter because I really have a blast every year since I'm such a huge Linsner fan to begin with. I'm doing one of Joe's newer creations, and am very excited about it.

So... who else?????

I wanted to try and do it, with an original design I came up with a while back.

I'm going to jump on the bandwagon here since you asked so nicely. ;)

I haven't really been keeping my costume for this year's contest a secret. Anyone can find the rough sketch on my Dawn contest website (http://www.geocities.com/dawnlookalikes) , my Cosplaylab profile, my (under construction) costuming website (http://www.geocities.com/playofshadow) , and details on the construction on the Dawn site's prep journal, or on my costuming journal (http://www.livejournal.com/users/jeweldoll/) .

I've had to change the design of the bodice a bit to get more of the look I wanted, so when I can actually get to a scanner, I'll have the new design sketch up. Pretty much, though, what you see is what you'll get at the contest. It's coming along quite nicely at the moment, and is very close to being done. I hope it continues to progress as well as it has so far.

I love seeing what other people are planning for a couple of reasons; it lets me know which costumes to look forward to at the contest, gives me ideas on how to make certain portions of my own costume by seeing what other people try, and it also inspires me to do my best because I know other people are working so hard on their own interpretations.

I swear, Joie, you are the BEST PR for the contest :) You're like EVERYWHERE!! (laughs). I know a lot of the vets have said this, but I am REALLY looking forward to mingling this year. We only got to do so much last year. But your design looks VERY pretty and VERY feminine. I imagine you'll be quite the "dainty" one (for lack of a better word). I'm excited to see it come to life. The blue will compliment your skin tone and your features very well! :bigtu:

i plan on doing the contest, but have only gotten as far as the sketch.. it's based off the "dawn red queen". i took the main pattern and idea and made it more pleasing to my tastes and how is see dawn as a woman, as well as show off my assets. not sure on materials as of yet. probably a matte satin for the skirt, with design airbrushed on.. the top a matte stretch material to allow movement.. but lots of gluing.. and the corset black and white patent leather...
still not certain..
anyone have any ideas?
you can see pix of me as a chick in my gallery.

I'm doing Brass Ring

http://www.linsner.com/images/covers/brassring.jpg

Oh wait...you wanted an intro thingy...um, ok.

This is my second Dawn contest and third D*C. I enter because I love my Dawny friends and last year I inspired some of this years contestants so I feel kinda obligated in a way, but a fun way.

ok, so i think this is the last place i have to announce my entrance in demmie! heh, so yeah, i'm gonna be in this year for the fourth year in a row. i'm really hopeful about the backstage situation being more well suited for mingling than last year, i really missed that......you'll all just have to wait to see what i'm putting together for this year!

I'm not going in this year, but I made a promise over three years ago that I would enter, and I'll make good on it next year.

I don't know what I'm doing yet. But there's a few ideas beating around in my head, and I have well over a year to plan.

I'm excited! ^o^ I had so much fun watching the contest last year! I can't wait to be a part of it this year!

For people who have been in the contest before: you sign up at the con, just like for the masquerade, right?

I'll be starting on my costume probably within a month or so. Wee, excitement!

www.linsner.com usually has the sign up form there so you can already have it filled out and ready and bring it with you to the con. It's easier to sit down and think of your introduction at home than having to stand in front of the registration table and do it ;)

Right now the form on the site still says "2003". I'm not sure if they're going to make a "2004" one yet or not.

Try to sign up early. It makes things easier on everyone :)

Since it looks like Jason, who was in charge of a lot of the registration stuff last year, may not be doing it again this year, I'm not sure if they're going to be able to have a 2004 form pre-printed before the con. At the very least, we can always hit up the contest registration table as soon as it opens and bring the forms back a little later. I've done that the past few years; take the form somewhere quiet and fill it out, then bring it back to the table to turn in once I'm done.

Earlier is definitely better though. The contest fills up fast so definitely don't wait until Saturday afternoon to sign up!

The last two years contest have been great.

I had designed a "faux" dawn outfit this year called "Dawn" of the Dead, because George Romero is going to be there and because it would be silly, but sadly the young lady going with me had to cancel.
Ah well

Maybe I'll wear it ;)

Best of luck to all, and see you there.

I'm still trying to decide whether or not I will. I haven't found one dress or outfit that really appeals to me enough to go all out on making it. There's a few that are close, but I don't think they would really work for me. There's too many to choose from.

Well you know, you could always make a composite of all of them because there's is a category for "Best Original Design". You don't have to pick just one image of Dawn, just try your best to embody Dawn as a whole.

There is a mostly covered Dawn outfit I have had my eye on for years, the forest http://www.linsner.com/gallery2.asp?i=104&c=11 I just haven't had the incentive to do it. Maybe will eventually do that one, or poledancer or lunchboxb - those are about the only 3 outfits I like that think wouldn't be too hideous on me. Maybe next year I will get up the courage to do one of those.

That was the first Dawn that I thought of doing two years ago ^^

I started work on it and got it about 80% done before I started hating it...the colors just did not work on me and I felt like a circus tent.

So instead of entering that year, I just watched and saw how things went on and got to know the other Dawns and then last year I finally entered (nervous as hell) and it was fun. This year is going to be a blast :)

Which one is "lunchboxb"? I can't think of which one you're talking about off hand. I've seen the two versions of poledancer and I think that's a really nice design ^^

Melissa-- that's actually one of the ones I was considering, but everytime I drew it out, it looked more and more ridiculous as an actual dress and not a drawing. I really want to do the brass ring dress, but aside from looking awful in red, Ravien I think is doing it too. I'd go for all white, but I think the one I liked already won in the past. I did however, have a crazy moment of wanting to do super duper space dawn.

Yep, I'm doing Brass Ring :)

I'm making it more rose/coral colored than red because that's how it looks to me in the picture...then again the more I stare at the picture, the more the color changes and I get all crosseyed.

Someone should do Superdawn. I like that design but spandex bodysuit and fatness don't mix :P I'm a sucker for cheesy superheroes.

Ooh, you should do it! You do really well on making those big, poofy ballgown looking dresses. I think it would be very flattering.

Gah, the more I think about my own design, the more I am beginning to realize this is going to be expensive. -_- I can't picture anything in my mind other than stretch velvet. I need to cheaperize my tastes, lol.

Okay, might as well pipe up too

Yes, I am going to be in the convention again. It will be my 6th year as part of the contest (this will be the 7th annual contest).

Up until about a few weeks ago I had an original costume planned. I'm starting to have second thoughts and am thinking of doing a recreation piece again....but I'm not sure.

Granted, I haven't been a part of the contest as long as others, but I am probably one of the most vocal. One thing I have noticed over the past couple of years, is a lot of people doing the same outfits, year after year, and multiple people showing up in the same outfit. That always baffled me, as Dawn has been around for well over a decade, so there's no shortage of ensembles to choose from, so many different aspects of Dawn. So I figured I'd put a buncha pix that I had up on my server because maybe some of the girls haven't been exposed to a lot of different sides of Dawn, or there might be something that might speak to them they haven't seen before. I know it would be a major treat to see a myriad of various facets of Dawn in the contest this year.

http://www.virtualdementia.com/dawn/gallery/ is what I put together. Now this isn't a complete list, but I picked out basically the stuff that wasn't just a bodystocking, and stuff that hasn't been done a gazillion times before. You're more likely to be noticed if you choose something that hasn't been done before, so this is my contribution .. take it as ya will :)

Lunchboxb is all black dress, will attach. I think the forest would work okay for me colorwise, but haven't sketched it out to get a real feel for it to see if could make work w my body. Think might try red poledancer first since I think I can modify that to work with me, then see if I want to try forest.

Ohh ok...I've seen the art for the "white" version of this dress before (lunchboxa?).

Someone did the Forest one two years ago (I think). You can see what they did here: http://www.dawncontest.com/01dawn6.jpg

I know it always helps me to see the way other people have interpreted a costume that I'm thinking about doing.

I like the red dress in your icon and think red definitely works for you :)

I know Dementia posted some of this information before, but I thought I'd add a bit to it. She also makes some good points about the contest as well.

Linsner.com is still working on the Official Dawn Contest site at:

http://www.dawncontest.com

They have however, put together a forum that goes into more debth about the contest along with helpfull hints and general contest information at:

http://pub205.ezboard.com/bdawncontest

They also have a couple of galleries up. One with a sampling of contestants from every year at:

http://www.dawncontest.com/girlspage.htm

And one with a sampling of Dawn costumes at:

http://www.dawncontest.com/costumepage.htm

Hope to see some of you guys there and remember EVERY contestant will get some sort of goodie just for entering.

(as well as others)

I'm posting this for a friend, so feel free to contact her.

*This is in the cosplay classifieds as well, but since this is Dawn related, I thought I would mention it here*

Just a quick disclaimer: costumes that have placed in at the contest (marked with a *) are unfortunately not eligible to be worn in the contest again. Contestants that do this will be disqualified. It's not just the winner who can't enter again, but the costume as well. (Every contest has to have rules, right?) ..

Even with this, if there's a piece(s) you're interested in using in conjunction with what you're wearing for the contest, just inquire :D

"I'm just about bringing my first horse ever home and I'm hoping to raise a little more money for everything he needs! I posted these for sale on my site a while ago but haven't had luck so I'm looking to see what the Best Offer for some of them would be if anyone was interested. :) Click on the links below to go look at the pages dedicated to the costumes for full details. The costumes I have up for sale are:

*Freedom Dawn (http://www.crimsonvision.net/freedom.htm newwindow) Asking $1500
*Battle Goddess Dawn (http://www.crimsonvision.net/battlegoddess.htm newwindow) Asking $550 (pieces can be sold seperately)
Black Tie Dawn (http://www.crimsonvision.net/blacktie.htm newwindow) Asking $250
First Sight Dawn (http://www.crimsonvision.net/firstsight.htm newwindow) Asking $250
Green Dawn Pieces (http://www.crimsonvision.net/salestuff.htm newwindow) Asking $50 per piece

I have listed the two Dryad dresses and have had two interested people but no solid buyers yet:
Dryad Gown (http://www.crimsonvision.net/dryadgowns.htm newwindow) Asking $175
Dryad Dress (http://www.crimsonvision.net/dryadsdress.htm newwindow) Asking $125

Also, three costumes I hadn't mentioned selling before:

White Medieval (http://www.crimsonvision.net/medieval/pe15.htm newwindow)
This was one of the first dresses I made for Pennsic. It's made of a gorgeous white/silver brocade and anytime I wear it I'm asked if this is my wedding dress. Overskirt for sale only; the white underskirt I still need. Sorry about the small pic but there is an even smaller and harder to see pic here (http://www.crimsonvision.net/medieval/pe9.htm newwindow). Asking $75.

Blue Mourning Gown (http://www.crimsonvision.net/blue.htm newwindow)
This is a gown based off of Arwen's 'Mourning Gown' in The Two Towers. Shimmering blue velvet with a beaded trim neckline and cuffs. Has a train and is made of stretch velvet so clings to you deliciously. Asking $250.

Mara Jade (http://www.crimsonvision.net/mara.htm newwindow)
Included would be the two piece pleather bodysuit, the shin guards, the belt with holster, the shoulder pieces, the cape and the goggles. Blaster and lightsabers not included. Asking $400.

All of these costumes can be altered down to fit you at no charge (as long as it's not drastic!). The current sizes are about 38 Bust - 28 Waist - 38 Hips

I think thats it. If you wanted something else on the site you can always ask for that too but no promises that I will sell. ;) Email me (traci@crimsonvision.net)!

Okay I'm bored and all OCD and Dcon obsessed. This question has been asked a million times all over the place, so I know it must be frustrating with contestants spread all over the 'net, so I figured I'd try and make things a little simpler, especially for the Powers That Be so they know how many goodies to prepare for us (hee hee)!

I went through Cosplay.com, Cosplaylab.com, the message board @ Linsner.com, the Dawn Contest board here, AND the Dawn Lookalike LJ Community to try to compile a master list of how many and who is going. Instead of creating more chaos and posting the list here, I figured I'd just have it central at one place, the Official Dawn Contest Message Board. The link is here :

Official Dawn Contest Forum : Roll Call! (http://p066.ezboard.com/fdawncontestfrm15.showMessageRange?topicID=1.topic&start=21&stop=25).

Now I've got 35 people, but I may have some doubles, and I'm sure I'm missing people. So just reply with any information I may be missing or you want me to include (like a link to the costume you're doing), and anything you need me to add/change and I'll edit the post to reflect the changes. Also, if you know someone who is on the list and shouldn't be, or is someone ISN'T on the list and should be... speak up :) . Takes a lot of the work out of going all over the place to figure out who is who...

That Voltaire schmuck isn't MCing again, is he? He was a tool.

I thought he did an excellent job considering:

He MCd with no notice because Roddy Roddy Piper decided it was against his religion to MC a Dawn contest

The "Spike" people were going nuts on everyone backstage making a hard time for everyone

He had no clue what to do and improvised after reading our intros, at which I think he did a great.

So yeah, I hope he does MC again.

yeah, lay off Voltaire!!

I've been in the Dawn contest every year since the 2nd year, and I've seen good MCs and bad MCs. I've seen them give the contest to someone just 5 minutes beforehand, I've seen MCs come in drunk, I've seen them do all sorts of shitty things to the girls and to their introductions.

Voltaire was a wonderful MC last year, he did a wonderful job with every girl's introduction, he entertained the crowd with NO WARNING or preparation, he was nice to us backstage and onstage, he wasn't sleezy or inapproprate....he is by far one of the top 2 MCs we've EVER had.

I gotta agree, Voltair did a super great job last year all things considering. From what I hear though, DragonCon doesn't like having the same Emcee twice in a row, so chances of him doing it again this year are slim, unless the person they do pick bails within an hour of the contest starting.

You can have the MC say things like how you made your costume, what Dawn means to you, how you embody the Goddess, etc.

You can view a sample of the form over at www.linsner.com under the "contest" page. Like Ravien said, it can be anything from how you made your costume to why you chose it.

The main reason for it is to give the Emcee's something to say as you walk on stage, it really doesn't have any bearing on winning the contest. Most people are not going to pay attention to what you wrote, only to what you are wearing and how you carry/perform on stage =)

I have mine done now. ^_^ A pic is in my gallery. It's loosely based on the "Graffiti" image pictured below. I made some of my own stuff up, though.

I am not really happy with the way parts of my Dawn turned out - but I do have it to wearable state so see you all this weekend.

Just remember, it's not a "costume" contest. Just have fun with it and be the Goddess you are :)

This is the first time I've entered and I'm really nervous because I went with my own creation which I had to change at the last moment, I just hope people don't look at me and blink and say ermmm.. that's totally NOT Dawn! LOL.

Originally, I was going to do a whole skit, but I had a bad car wreck which left me with two broken bones in my leg, and I'm still gimpy ( I've got a walking cane thing that will NOT be coming along during the contest) and I donno if I should still try to do my skit, since I can't really move around as fast (but I spent so much time choreographing the whole thing).

It was nice meeting you too :) You looked like you were having alot of fun and that's what the contest is about ;)

I'm shy (I am...shush) so I might not have said hi to everyone. The after party was really fun and I hope they have one again next year.

So...started working on next year's costume yet? ;)

BTW: there's a pic of me in this year's costume here: http://tk7602.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=42&pos=44

only 364 more days till DragonCon!

Just wanted to say everyone was simply amazing at the contest! You ladies (and some guys) did a great job and I'm sooooooo glad I didn't have to judge! Amazing costumes and even more amazing people =) Some of the nicest you'll ever meet!

Thanks to those who made it to the after party. Everyone seemed to have a good time and we are working on ways to make it bigger and better for next year!

Just got home so I'm going to bed for some much needed rest. I'm sure I'll be posting lots more before the week is out.

Btw, I have contestant's music from the contest. If you need your's back, please email me at cyndee @ linsner.com with your addy and info along with contestant number and I will do my best to get it back to you.

More later -

I'm so lame, because I was waaaaay too tired to get up Saturday morning and sign up for it. ^_^; So I decided instead of doing that, I'd stay in bed for a while and stay up all night. I wore my Dawn around a little bit Saturday night while the contest was going on, but without the proper boots because I couldn't walk all the way to the other hotel in them. I don't regret it too much, but I do regret not seeing all the other Dawns!

Hey, Star Wars Dawn here. It was an amazing experience and I loved every second of it. Every one of the lovely contestants were so nice, especially to a lowly out of place Dawn who wasn't even there to compete, just to enjoy and learn from the back stage experience. The staff was wonderful as well and I can't wait to attend and enjoy next year as well. Congratulations to all the contestants, and thanks again for the warm welcome.
