Ok I am definately doing Female Irvine. Any ideas on subtle but noticable alterations to make to Ivines outfit to make it more girl.
And should i do Female Seifer or female Zell. And same questions as the above.
OOOOH and any ideas on how to create a nice looking gun blade? Er. Time and money limited (need it for AX).

Is there any reason you want to make them effeminate? I'd think when people do that to characters it's because they have a female design in mind... @_@ Do you just not want to crossplay? ^^;

Nah i don't mind crossplaying. But see if i do things this way when i walk by people of the same costumes who's skill level surpasses mine beyond compare. I can at least know that i am not really being compared to them because i am slightly different. Thus on a slightly different scale. yeah, don't ask. it's all in my mind i understand. I was dropped on my head as a child.

The only thing I can think of are obvious things like skirts and stuff. =/ Take a look at the female designs from FF8 and incorporate details from those into the guys's outfits, perhaps.

hmm very good idea. I shall research character designs in the game from the other characters. You are a genius. Kudos to you.

Not lots of time to reply here as I should be running off to work, but there are a few obvious things you could do to make the costume more effeminate. Putting some thought off the top of my head into what Irvine looks like (and, yes, I have spent some time staring!), I would suggest a tighter blouse with a V-neck -- since his shirt is low-necked anyway -- and wearing low-rise pants instead of having them go all the way up to your waist.
I would keep the chaps, wear high-heeled boots, and on the coat, depending on if you're going to make it or buy it, maybe you can do something effeminate with it, like pulling it in to define it more at the waist instead of just letting it hang straight and loose.

I actually really like it when fans take a commonly cosplayed character (as most of the FF characters are) and change the costume so that it is still recognizeable, but is an original creation, and this includes femin-izing male characters (or male-izing female ones). I consider it different than crossplay, which basically has the same goal of regular cosplay (replicating the image of a character as accurately as possible). As an example, G-Chan did an awesome female Seifer: http://www.acparadise.com/cosplayers/gchan/seifer-1.jpg
Given that, I'd let your imagination run wild, as long as the costume is still recognizable.
