View Full Version : Yoai or Yuri Con? You decided

No this is not your basic "Is there a Yuri Con?" or "Is Yuri promoted in Yaoi Con?" post. My question for you is....

Many people crossplay at Yaoi Con, many girls dress like men and visa versa. What puzzles me is that if girls crossplay as guys, and act out Yoai sceens or pictures... isn't it techinally Yuri? I mean they are really girls....

Just a question that had puzzled my mind for a bit. Either way I decided to go to my first Yoai con crossplaying for the first time as a random Bishi guy...then we'll see where it goes from there hehe

07-25-2004, 11:00 AM
Technically, I believe you're right. But crossdressing as a boy is sooo much fun!

Phew I pondered it soo much that I was wondering if I was still sane hehe. Yeah I've always wanted to try being a guy but I didn't think i could pull it off until i messed around with clothes, make up and most difficult hair....I have below waist length hair! >_<.

You going to Yoai Con?

07-26-2004, 03:03 AM
I don't believe so, but that's just my opinion. You're dressed up as a character and therefore, your character is doing that Yaoi scene. And have your character be male and the other chacter be male, it's Yaoi.

07-26-2004, 01:38 PM
It may be 'technically yuri' since they're female, but they aren't acting out yuri or trying to do that at all. o_o Just like any play where an actor may play the opposite gender. It's not the player gender you're supposed to think about; it's the character.

07-26-2004, 05:56 PM
omg i know exactly what you mean, i was busting my brains for a while trying to figure this out the first time i saw this kind of photo (two girls dressed as characters from Enzai, in bed #^.^#) from a fan pov, yaoi differs psychologically from yuri.. Now, i'm going on the tangent the that *creators* of yaoi/yuri are of the opposite sex, ie not gay guys who draw yaoi or lesbian women who draw yuri-- thats what makes the distinction.

Given that yaoi is mainly created for and by women, (yuri for/by men), and pictures are *meant for other girls* to gawk at/squeal/fawn over, not for guys to..uh.."use"?, there fore they are yaoi.

from a personal standpoint, i hate yuri that's created by men (this may be natural >__>) huge breasts, fluid everywhere, expressions that make me cringe.. ick >.< most of the time it's just too much, and I dont like breasts to begin with so i dont like photos of two girlygirls.... But if I see two girls who are absolutely perfectly cosplaying as guys, it's beautiful. forgive me if this is hypocritical.

07-26-2004, 06:04 PM
Was there ever a panel for this topic at Yaoi Con? I can't remember XD

For me it depends on the costume or the way the cosplayer pulls off the character I guess. If two girls fawning over each other cosplaying Vash and Wolfwood obviously look like girls (ie. unflattened chests, ponytailed hair instead of short hair, etc. etc.) then to me that's yuri @D@ If there's been an effort made to have the characters actually look like they're supposed to, then I guess it's yaoi. This is why I buy doujinshi though, no confusion there.... most of the time anyway XD

07-26-2004, 06:36 PM
well there's also the unfortunate shortage of guy cosplayers able and willing. ^.^'' it's one thing to find a guy or have a guy friend who looks *exactly* like soandso, but it's a whole other thing to get him to put his arms around another guy even for a pic or return service =P

but many girls are just much more like the character and more fun to be with ^.^''

Scarlett and Michi That is very true I've had a few friends in drama play opposite sexes... humm that makes me think again..

jetspectacular Yippy Iam not the only one who strains her brain over this hehe :crylaugh: But that clarifies a lot I agree with it all hehe. Guys just over do it when they draw Hetai....I mean can those girls even stand up? Their chest would probably weigh them down.... I mean i think it's cute when girls hug and snuggle and stuff but yeha all that other crap is scarey... thats why i' more of a Shoene-ai person... but Yoai is prefered over Yuri.

ACXchan That is pretty true, sometiems girls cospaly girl versinos of guy chacters and that Yuri hehe

07-26-2004, 08:53 PM
omigosh Nyau, thats totally right, switching the genders of characters can be really cool sometimes.. theres a japanese Guilty Gear cast with everyone's gender switched and their clothes tailored accordingly, it was awesome.. now THAT's talent... The girl versions of Vash and Wolfwood i've seen are pretty cool, (though wolfwood is easy to begin with XD ) i like seeing people really get creative though.

There were girl versions of Naruto (oho, no! not nekkid!) and Sasuke at AX04 and they were really cute. I'd like to think of one someday as well...

07-27-2004, 07:46 PM
*grins* I'm thinking of going as Dante from Devil May Cry 2 as a girl. No mini-skirts though. It's exactly the same outfit as guy!Dante, but fitted for a girl's curves. I can't crossplay anyway since there is nothing out there that can safely flatten a 35C cup without causing me to fall over from lack of oxygen.

Just thinking about it is fun. I really do wish I could crossplay. I've been told that I make a very "pretty boy". Hm...I don't know if that's an insult or a compliment to my features.

jetspectacular haha yep that is talent. But it can also be mistaken as poorly dressed crossplayers >_<! I saw the girl versino of Vash at FanimeCon OMG she was soo cute awww. I wanted to try a girl version of Vincet from ff7 but his outfit girl or guy is a bit complicated lol Nice pictures by the way ^_~

Apsara thats really cool, Iam not to knee on binding myself I probably have to get used to it but i'll probably pass out I need my AIR! Hey pretty boys are awsome! I mean I love Bishis! XD

07-27-2004, 11:04 PM
rofl! I was thinking about that too! When me and my friend Pat decided to cosplay as Heero and Duo and take some 1x2 poses I was busting my brain with "...we're dressing as guys to do yaoi...but...we're both girls...so it's...yaoi and yuri..? o_o" I'm not thinking about it anymore though. I just can't wait till we get them done and take pics together! No Yaoi con for me....I'm underage. Why do you have to be 18 or older to go to Yaoi con anyways? o_O

07-28-2004, 01:02 AM
Aspara, as long as you dont go as Dante from the upcoming #3! (no shirt @.@) , hahahahah! I'd love to see a fem dante and then even a male trish. I've seen fanart of it, Dante had uber long white hair...

and like Nyau I think binding really sucks sometimes.. I'm just a B cup so it's not too horrible, but one time i bound my chest and wore a heavy backpack... I felt like I was about to tear in half >.<* Girl versions of popular guys/bishounen are much more creative, fun, and comfortable :3

and selphie, dun worry-- the years pass by quick enough. Save your money while you still can!

07-28-2004, 01:14 AM
No Yaoi con for me....I'm underage. Why do you have to be 18 or older to go to Yaoi con anyways? o_O

For the same reason it's illegal for minors to purchase porn n.n Yaoi Con is full of adult material. Even if the material itself isn't gushy or whatever like most hentai is, if the merchandise, nature of panels, and content of an anime depicts sex in some explicit way then it's illegal for minors to purchase/participate/view it @D@

It's possible to bind 36Cs by the way, I would know XD It really depends on your comfort level too. My skin's not too sensitive to adhesive so tape is my friend.

07-29-2004, 02:08 PM
Haha, yes. My friend and I wanted to start a panel - 'Accepting Your Lesbianism'

07-29-2004, 08:29 PM
I finally saw a clear picture of Dante in DMC 3...you're right. I do not...more specifically...cannot go as him. *laughs* Unless I do some very creative binding.

Are you sure? How are you able to squish a C cup flat? Please, please share with me! Just today I wrapped myself up like a mummy...and it was 84 degrees. XD So stupid, but I wanted to try out all the ways I could think of and I couldn't wait. Anyway, I still had a noticable roundness. Or maybe it's my torso. I have a very short, very small torso so I checked myself in the mirror and that bump looked like a friggin boulder. XP The ace binding did not make it look smaller, it in fact compacted and pushed my breasts up! I felt like I was in a corset.

Ashley Rice: wouldn't.. Cosplay-->Lesbianism require one woman dressed as a male the other as a female?? x.X

Apsara: bwa ha. Actually someone on some other forum thought Dante was wearing a black bra or something.. the imbicile. It's his holster obviously, but to do his 3rd outfit Fem style I'd go for a black bikini... or tube top... @.@ I'd make the pants into a brown patched-leather miniskirt.. and then the coat however, you'd have to leave intact because it's just kickass...

07-30-2004, 02:06 AM
Technically it would be Yuri but if you're viewing it from a fangirl perspective and looking at it as the two CHARACTERS kissing, well then it's yaoi. That's teh great part of being Bi at Yaoi-con, you get the best of it all.

07-30-2004, 11:53 AM
Hahahah Ashley, YES!!

Ashley Rice: wouldn't.. Cosplay-->Lesbianism require one woman dressed as a male the other as a female?? x.X

...Eh? What do you mean?

Technically it would be Yuri but if you're viewing it from a fangirl perspective and looking at it as the two CHARACTERS kissing, well then it's yaoi.

Yes, exactly.

07-30-2004, 01:56 PM
uh..uh I mean.. (i'm in completely unchartered territory here so.. pardon..^.^') I was under the impression that.. er.. in a situation..

Given: Lesbianism involves a sexual relation between two women;
Whereas: One of the women involved behaves/dresses masculine and the other behaves/dresses feminine;
Whereas: The attraction is between a woman and a woman acting as a man
Therefore: The woman acting as a man is sexually attracted to feminine things and is the "real" lesbian

i r teh debait suk.

07-30-2004, 03:44 PM
Certainly not. Lesbianism is simply love between two women. It can be two effeminate women, two masculine women, or one effeminate woman and one masculine woman. Sometimes they might not even identify with either gender. Don't worry, though. Believing gay couples typically have a 'male' and a 'female' assignment/role is a common misconception. ^_^; It's not a rule for being gay, though. Haha.

07-30-2004, 04:34 PM
*dumbfounded* Dante...in a black bra...o.< *tries to imagine...shakes head vigorously* That is so wrong...I can see sepiroth or even that buff, white haired dude in Kingdom Hearts sporting one...just because the idea of these oh-so masculine characters in them is insanely hilarious...but Dante? *snickers*

Somewhat off-topic, but I couldn't help it.

Me: Waah...there are rules for being gay?

Girlfriend: There are? Since when?

Me: I dunno.

Girlfriend: Aren't we gay? Shouldn't we know?

Me: um...

Girlfriend and me staring at the screen...K.I.S.S....erk...*dies laughing*

Sixshot Haha I feel you being Bi has many good points :;high five:: :crylaugh:

jetspectacular: haha it gets confusing and even I dont know where we are in this convo... X_X

Apsara: Aww you and your gf sound soo cute hehe. I guess when you care deeply about someone you don't need to think, weather it's a guy or a girl, it just happens :bigtu:

07-31-2004, 03:01 AM
Hehe, thanks, I seriously never thought of myself as gay. I didn't even know I was a lesbian, until I overheard a bunch of boys snickering about lesbians and how "tasty" they are. And being the dumb@$$ that I am, I asked, "What's a lesbian? Is it good?" at the same time as my then-girlfriend was giving me a hickey.

That was...six years ago? I can't remember (and I really don't care). Everyone on the bus was staring at us. XD I later found out they were talking about my then-girlfriend and me.

That bra reference on Dante brought back this really bizarre memory. When Kingdom Hearts came out a male friend said I could go as a Ansem. I just looked at him since he didn't like crossplay or "pretty" boys in general and I finally said, pointing to the picture of Ansem, "That's indecent exposure." He just shrugged, he didn't care. It occured to me that in his mind it was still a girl underneath that costume.

08-01-2004, 02:13 AM
I haven't played Kingdom Hearts so sorry if I sound really stupid for asking this but.... that IS a guy right? Not a girl in that chest-bearing coat @D@?

What happened to the bisexuals? I accepted my bisexuality, why can't the rest of you XD?

08-01-2004, 02:27 AM
Ansem's a guy.. ^^;

Aha.. sexuality.. I'd love to discuss that. :3 I miss those sort of topics on this board. But now we're getting horribly off-topic here. =/

08-01-2004, 02:38 AM
Okay whew, I got confused by the guy thinking it's still a girl underneath the costume comment x___x; Thanks @D@

There used to be a serious and rant set of boards right? I think this isn't so off topic though because I believe it really would make an interesting panel at Yaoi Con. Even though the subject would be partially yuri and really only pertaining to cosplayers I'm sure it'd spur some conversation regarding the nature of yaoi/yuri and what sexuality has to do with it. Or.. it could turn into the "Foods and Yaoi" panel LOL.

08-01-2004, 08:06 AM
Oh, whoops! I'm sorry, I meant to say, .".underneath that costume it was still me, a girl, crossplaying". So he had no problems with it. He knew who I was. If he didn't know and he was fooled that it was a real guy, then he would have gotten angry. He's that type of guy.

*amused* I came back to find the boards changed and didn't realize what it was until I wanted to rant about something.

Food and yaoi...XD Talking about the male anatomy over a sushi fest.

Hahaha you guys are silly. Do you know if anyone has ever hooked up at Yaoi con hehe and had sex mistaken that would be silly yet flattering I think hehe

08-01-2004, 02:36 PM
My favorite gender determination paradox is girls cosplaying as Nuriko. Is it crossplay if a girl dresses as a guy dressed as a girl?

But I think we've probably had this discussion before. ^_^

08-01-2004, 02:48 PM
Yeah, the Crossplay forum has gone through that topic a few times before. XD; I think crossplay is based off the gender, not the outfit, so it's still 'crossplaying'. Same with Mana and stuff like that.

Kaelistale Nyau
08-02-2004, 01:49 PM
Nuriko hehe yep I'd see how that would cause a debate... Hotohori would teachinally be in that case but he pretnded to be a women for like a short while until he fell for Miaka soo eh lol

08-02-2004, 02:44 PM
I also think that it's still crossplay to cosplay a guy that's dressed as a woman. Similarly you are NOT crossplaying if you are cosplaying a woman that's passing herself off as a man, Shakespeare style XD But that leads me to wonder, if two girls are cosplaying two men that dress up as women, is it yaoi or yuri? Kakakaka.

Kaelistale Nyau
08-02-2004, 03:54 PM
Thats where all the confusion begins wooo @_@

10-06-2005, 12:57 PM

And dont froget theres a lot of Bridgets out there(guilty gear), and
i've yet to see a guy/boy/male/whichever you like cosplaying. Bridget's being neglected! :square:

10-06-2005, 08:24 PM
Now, if a boy who's cosplaying as a girl dressed as a boy is kissing (or more?) a girl who's cosplaying as a boy dressed as a girl, what's that?

...other than confusing.

10-07-2005, 12:47 PM
It's not the player gender you're supposed to think about; it's the character.

Considering that if you didn't do that it would have completely ruined Shakespeare back in the day.

Funny you should mention that. I'm considering working on Bridget for next year's Fanime or Yaoi con...

Lin, workin' on the Yo-yo skillz. ^_^

Haha, a friend once told me that "Yaoicon is more like a yuricon because there are a bunch of girls crossplaying, making out with out girls"

10-21-2005, 11:41 PM
You know, personally, I never had a problem with any of it; guys kissing guys, girls kissing girls, guys dressed as girls kissing guys or girls, girls dressed as guys kissing guys of girls, and I haven't even *started* on gender association or identification. Really, as long as there's something yaoi/yuri related, I'm happy. ^^
