View Full Version : Hyrule in Michigan (Camp Hyrule)

Okay, here is the start of the official thread for Hyrule in Michigan, a gathering for Cosplayers with Zelda related costumes!

Please check out the website for a general FAQ:

Hyrule in Michigan (http://www.realmsoftracon.com/hyrule/hyrule.html)

This event is in the very preliminary stages. It will go on if there is enough interest. Right now it's looking like probably a $150 to $200 fee for an event which will last for about one week. And for transportation costs, here are some air fare prices from a couple key locations:

Los Angeles to Detroit (round trip)
Southwest Airlines
$600 (fully refundable)
$226 (restricted)

New York to Detroit (round trip)
Southwest Airlines
$360 (fully refundable)
$232 (restricted)

Tampa to Detroit (round trip)
Southwest Airlines
$500 (fully refundable)
$116-264 (restricted)

As for rental cars, there are a couple ways to do this. Probably the best would be to rend one or two vans and have everybody carpool to the camp using the vans. This way everybody can chip in for the price of a week's van rental so that it would be cheaper than everybody renting a car on their own. Or better yet, those close enough to drive could ferry people to the camp for a nominal fuel payment.

So, even from as far away as Los Angeles, one could do a week's event for as little as $500. Not really too bad.

So, I think that probably the 6 nights/7 days package would be good. Probably about $200, subject to change once I figure out how much insurance would cost. Based on these rough estimate prices, how many are willing to tentatively say that they will come?

Any questions or comments, you can either post them here, private message me, or E-mail me at hyrule(at)realmsoftracon.com.

Shotgun! Give it a year or more ahead of time and I should have enough cash by then. Full time college puts dampers on other stuff, *sighs*.

How far is this campsite from the airport in Detroit? Do you have an address for the campsite?

08-20-2004, 11:54 AM

I'm not sure how many places were looked at, but from what I've seen so far, this looks like an excellent place.

08-20-2004, 08:21 PM
The camp is a little under a 100 mile drive from Detroit. So we would definitely need people closeby who can transport people. And it looks like a van or two would also be a good bet. Perhaps the camp can provide some transportation. As things progress and interest grows, I'll dig deeper.

Address for those who didn't click on the link:

3335 Lakeshore
Lexington, MI 48450 USA

There must be more than just two interested parties...

Oh my gosh... That's the camp right across the street from my friend's house. Lake Huron, and that entire area, is *so* beautiful... Maybe I can bring you guys cookies ^o^

I live in Rochester Hills, and Detroit Metro Airport is about 1 hour South of me... Lexington is about 1.5 hours North of me. So once you'd arrive, you have to drive for about 2.5 Hours. I can look into providing some transportation if people needed it :d

08-20-2004, 11:57 PM
o_o That's only a 158 mile drive from where I'll be, according to Yahoo. Wow. Screw planes. XD Well, we'll see how finances are and if I have any Zelda costumes by then. I'm at least somewhat interested.

When is this camp thingy going to happen??

When is this camp thingy going to happen??

If enough interest is generated, Hyrule in Michigan will take place in Summer of 2005 while school is out.

I'm suprised I didn't have that information in the FAQ! Well, I just added it.

*squells like a fan girl* Oh my gosh! I am so coming and bringing everyone I know (which will probably be >3) Oh how fun ^^ I think it's a bad thing that I'm already excited but who cares! This works out perfectly oh yay! *dances around* Overloading on happiness >.O

Wow this is really coming together! I'm all up for it as long as I'm able to do it, which would be a total blast!

In fact, I can't see myself missing this -- so we'll just have to see. A year from now is quite a long way off and I am fairly sure things will be happening for me so I can only hope this happens july/august -- then again you never know :)

Damn I wanna go!!!

You can definately count me in. Also, I'd be more than willing to help out with the transportation. The prices that you've estimated I must say are plenty reasonable I must say. Seeing that the event will be next summer if everyone that's interested in attending saves up a little bit each month it will be more than affordable. If you need any help with the coordination out here, I should be able to help there too. You've got my support on this.

Put Marisa on the list, and add in Four Swords to the cosplay list, because we's-a-comming ^_^

08-25-2004, 11:50 PM
Well, looks like the interested parties are coming out! Well, in the coming weeks and months I'll start getting some general info. Most importantly, the minimum size group so that I know how many "absitively posolutely" (a little Ned Flanders lingo there) people I need.

I'm also going to start compiling a list of interested parties. So I'll start trying to contact you so that everybody can remain updated.

I'll also set up some preliminary dates. I think probably a five day four night event would be good. (Monday-Friday) That will give everybody the weekend to travel to and from. And it will also reduce the cost a little.

And one more thing which I will post seprately so that it gets maximum recognition.

08-26-2004, 12:00 AM
Okay, it's time to brainstorm things to do to fill these five days. This will be Brainstorm step 1, which means that we all post any and all ideas which we can think of, no matter how ridiculous they may seem. A workable idea definitely can come out of a ridiculous idea.

-Boffer construction
-Individual Dungeon Contest (set up a Zelda-esque 'dungeon' and send people through)
-Storyline for the week
-costume contests (Categories: Overall, Link, Zelda, Supporting Characters)
-Horseback riding
-Water activities
-Tournament battle
-Short Plays/skits
-Photo Ops
-Formation and marching
-physical fitness tests (done in garb)
-garb making idea exchange
-prop making idea exchange
-complaint session (done on the last day where everybody says what works and what bites)

Get those ideas coming so that I can do up a preliminary schedule of events!

Heya Edgar. I had been reading the site and wasn't sure if the horses would just be a photo op deal or if we'd be able to ride them, as the fees are quite hefty. Otherwise, horses for riding or even just photos would be neat.
Guess I'll tack a couple of things on the list:

Archery - I read about the range they have so I thought that perhaps we could integrate this somehow.
Craftable item / project - This I thought would be something interested parties could partake in such as a make-and-take token from Camp Hyrule. In a way though, you already mentioned boffer crafting, so that might be enough to work on :)
Triforce Searching - Hmm maybe just a big game of find a hidden Triforce...just a thought.
Rupee Searching / Prizes at end? - Perhaps rupees could be hidden around, all colored according to their in-game values. Redeemed at end of event for prizes or T-shirts or Zelda stuff? On that note...
Playable (adapted or simplified) mini-games from the Zelda games.

Perhaps when it comes to the evening or at night there could be a comedy or some kind of trivia game (guessing music, characters, etc) played at the main building or something...So far most of the events are outdoors or would have to take place during the day, so something in the evening or at night should be thought about as well.

That's all I can think of right now and I'm sure just doing all of Edgar's suggested events would be enough alone, but there are my thoughts, some probably better than others.
I'll keep checking back now and then :)

How about a scavenger hunt/trading route? You can give everyone an item when they come to camp, and everyone's trying to get something else, and they need to trade with each other to get it...
Or set up stations (like death mountain, Kakariko Village, etc.) and have everyone trade their items at the station?

The-Real-Link, your rupee idea is good, but which game would we go by? After all, the colors' values are different from game to game, aren't they?

08-26-2004, 02:48 PM
Yeah!! Now I don't have to worry about school!!!!

08-26-2004, 11:20 PM
Yeah for me too! I'm trying so hard not to have to have summer school... that would ruin it... Just a random thought but I've never been to camp...

08-30-2004, 05:55 PM
Marisa - I thought they were pretty much consistant. Besides factoring in the solid blue rupee from The Legend of Zelda, and not starting the color value until A Link to the Past and going from there, I thought the values have stayed consistant. I can't remember one color being worth one value and that same color being worth a different value in another game, unless the rupee itself was new (such as the addition of the grey or yellow ones more recently).

Michigan is close enough to me to make my attendance almost definite.

I look forward to knowing more.

A game which harkens back to the cartoon: "Triforce Capture", where players are devided into teams, one with the Triforce of Courage, the other with the Triforce of Power...

Combine them to win.

An obstacle course is warranted.

Shield Ball: Like volleyball, but a wooden 'Volleyshield' is given to each player.

I could probably come up with more, and better... I just need time to think about it.

08-31-2004, 09:03 PM
*evil chuckle* Elemental here. Thank The-Real-Link for poking me.

I'm really interested in coming myself, though I can't say for certain for a while. If I do go though, Dark Link will make an appearance. I even have a second tunic, so I can wear either if something happens to one.

I LOVE the trading game idea-though you'd have to work it out and organize it long in advance. Also scavanger hunts are ALWAYS fun, and we'd better have ourselves a couple of campfires, or I'll be very sad.

Rupees also sound great, but rather difficult for anything outdoors- we'd want something that could survive the weather, so it'd need to be plastic, which means itd cost to have them cast, and we don't want to leave anything behind us when we leave. (Slightly the enviro freak here.)

Excited now.....

Odd question: If we're wearing the same outfit for a week, won't it get smelly with BO?

Hey, that'd be cool. But we could play it like Capture the Flag, and it can go on ALL WEEK.
Each member is divided into three teams: Wisdom, Courage, and Power. They're all given some kind of badge to signify what team they're on. Each team is also given a section of the camp to call their own, and the team "Leader" (Who can be nicknamed Link, Ganon, or Zelda) gets to hide their piece of the Triforce somewhere in their section of the camp. All week, as sort of a side quest, each team is trying to obtain the other peices of the Triforce. If they're found in their enemy's section of the camp, they get "captured" and can't participate in the Triforce Hunt until they're freed.
Basically, just like capture the flag, but it doesn't end when the triforce pieces are united. If Power is stolen by Team Link, then Team Ganon CAN steal it back, along with Courage. Or, Team Zelda can steal both of them from Team Link and unite them with Wisdom.

...yeah. I hope that made sense.

09-26-2004, 08:07 PM
It does, and I LOVE it!
We definitley need to do it.
