At the last minute on a commission I found out the fur was the wrong colour. I need to find light purple faux fur quickly, but cannot find any website offering it. Does anyone know any novelty fabric websites?

Well, I know you can buy fur at Joann's... you can try their website and see if they have any. I think it's www.joannfabrics.com or just "Joann's"

Thanks, but unfortunately I already looked there and they had none. :(

You could try dyeing white fur...just be careful of the kind you're dyeing because some of the finishes don't react well to dye.

For future reference, http://www.mendels.com/fauxfur.html is a great place to find odd faux fur. However, they do not carry light purple/lavender - I tried for months to find it and could not find anyone who did. (Granted, though, this was last year...) How I dealt with it was by coloring white fur with Prismacolor art markers. This didn't quite get down to the very base of the fur, so it looked a bit more like white fur with lavender tips, but at least it was the right color. Here's a pretty good picture of the results if you're curious: http://www.valandria.net/cosplay/pics/2001/glare.jpg

I was wary of dye on synthetic fabrics, so I didn't try; I don't know if that would lead to better results. The art marker method does have a few drawbacks... Especially if exposed to sun, the marker will tend to fade over time, so at this point my Ursula tail is rather more pink than lavender. It also takes quite a while to color a good chunk of fabric, and quite a few markers.

If you want to try dye, the fact that you need a light color will probably help you, since most accounts of dyeing synethetic fibers seem to indicate that you end up with a much lighter color than you get on the box.

Hmm, I'm being rather depressing here... okay, here's a site with hopefully some good info for you that might help you solve your problem (I thought they had info on dyeing fur but I can't seem to find it at the moment...). http://www.fursuit.org/faq/ Check out the "30.2 Fur resources" link especially, it's got links to all sorts of fur sellers.

Hope you find what you're looking for... and if you do, I'd love to hear where you found it, so I can maybe make a better tail for my own costume! ;)

O_o

This thread is over 5 years old! There's a recent thread about faux fur in the General Costume Help board, please don't ressurect ones that have been dead for so long, it just clutters the board.
