I'm planning on cosplaying as Shino (the bug guy from Naruto, for those that are bad with names) and I have pretty much everything but the jacket.
It's a grey button-down ski jacket with pockets near where the hands fall and a HUGE mandarin collar. I've been looking through stores for a jacket like this, but no luck.
Here are a few reference pictures:

If anyone could point me to a jacket that could be modified to look like this, or give me tips on how to make one (I have almost no experience making clothing...) I would greatly appreciate it.

Yay! Shino! XD
Hmm...I have a feeling you're gonna probably end up having to make it entirely in order to get it accurate (or get someone to do it on commission), but I definitely will keep an eye out for something close to it. I check out some really odd clothes shops online, so perhaps I'll turn something up with a collar like that. At any rate, good luck! He's my fav Naruto character X3

Dude, try here for some inspiration:

Yeah, I don't know why the colors are off either, but it should give you an idea how the jacket looks translated into real life clothing. For fabric I'd suggest a cotton gabardine (similar to what trench coats are made out of) or heavier cotton twill. Don't forget snaps (not buttons) up the front.

You say you don't have much experience making clothing...do you at least know how to sew? I don't this would be a horribly hard project, except maybe setting the sleeves in and adding a lining. Technically, you don't have to line it, but after all, it is a jacket, and lining it would make it look and feel much more substantial. Hope this helps.

I've asked myself that same question last year. Making, if u can call it that, that costume was the first experience i had with cosplay. anyway this is what i did.

*important* This way is completely and utterly very amateur if u want something that you can wash, re-use, or just something that is better discontinue reading.

First i got a somewhat over sized jacket that i had and traced it over a folded piece of white bed/linen sheet. At this point i disregarded the huge mandarin collar. Next I sewed over the trace I made. Thirdly, I flipped it inside out which would hide the excess fabric that was beyond the stitching. Then I cut one side in half, therefore making it into a jacket. From there I made the holes and stichted on the buttons. The most interesting thing was making the mandarin collar.
First I measured how long it should be, next I hot glued some white cardboard onto it (it stayed on pretty good), then i folded the other sheet over it. So basically in the end i had a cylinder of fabric with pieces of cardboard in it. Then u basically slide it over your head. And to me it definately wasn't the best looking cosplay, but it got it's point across, people knew what anime i was from and they took pix ^-^ so it was fine for me.
