View Full Version : Need help! What is the most COMPLEX female cosplay

ChihuahuaYip

okay, this may sound strange, but Iam looking for a VERY complex costume. I want a really awesome costume for my portfolio, but I dont get around the anime block very much.

So, what is a super complex femal costume? Could you post a picture for me?

I would like it to be some thing snug-fitting to show off my figure (fluant it while I've got it! :bigtu: ) and it would be preferable for the character to have long brown hair (but it doesnt HAVE to, I just have a big problem getting thick hip lenght hair in a wig! Although, it can, and has been done!)

So yey! To recap: complex, female, snug/showy, prefered brown hair but any will do!

Thanks for any help!

Maybe Charlotte Elbourne's fancy dress from Vampire Hunter D- Bloodlust. It does have a tight bodice that shows off curves and shoulders. And she DOES have long brown hair.

Lulu is always the obvious choice. I think those reasons are the reason why so many girls made it.

I agree on the Charlotte idea. Even though it's not a "flashy" costume it is lovely and would be a nice costume to advertise your technical skills.

Look at mangas like Alchino, and just manga in general, the costumes will be much more detailed in manga than in anime generally speaking.

Do you have an image link for that? The only thing I could find was plain white!

I hope my friend does not mind my linking to her pic of it. But she added all the gold. And I am pretty sure the anime did show a white and gold dress.

hi!
I'm new here and quite inexperienced when it comes to cosplay- but when I read your post and saw "complex" in it, I had to think of the Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne Artbook.
There are some really nice and rather complex looking dresses/costumes in there.
Maybe it would be worth checking out. Here's a link to a gallery I found-
http://www.animecubed.com/galleries/kkj/
Hope that helps :)

Edited because I got the hair wrong...

Ok, well, my definition of complex differes from that of most because my defintion considers complex to be that which can't be done on JUST a sewing machine; ie, you need prop making skills to boot. Thus, my ideas tend more towards the armored cosplay.

Anyway, I'm going to suggest my favorite Galaxy Fraulein, Frau Emilia, which I have never seen cosplayed before.

Not a lot of minutae in that costume, but the integration is going to be a total pain.

Final Fantasy costumes are excellent suggestions. I've been tempted to try a Lulu or FFX-2 character, but the work and detail necessary always scares me off.

CLAMP costumes, particularly those in the artbooks, are also really wonderful and detailed, as well. I saw that Borders is now carrying a few of their books. I'd suggest heading over there and browsing some of them.

In general, artbook cosplay is a lot more detailed and ornate than anything you'll find in anime or manga. There's a lot less reference for any single costume (generally only one picture), but you can make up a lot of detail on your own. This also gives you the chance to cosplay a popular character, but not an overdone costume.

Yukari's blue dress from Paradise Kiss XD Besides that thing,
Sara's dress from Castlevania: Lement of Innocence would be pretty difficult to be made WELL.
KOS-MOS from Xenosaga is often pretty hard...
Rei or Asuka's plugsuit in PVC from NGEva...
Shiva from most any Final Fantasy
Dark Knight, berserker, or mascot dress sphere from FFX-2
Hinoto from X/1999
Princess Garnet from FFIX
Random Chii artbook outfits.

The hardest possible cosplay is Mia of Macha from the Dot hack series because you need to do full body makeup like they did to Jim Carey in How the Grinch Stole Christmas plus the body armor and the cat eyes. Here is a good picture

Yuna's special dressphere from Final Fantasy is pretty damn difficult too. You'd go through a whole spool of wire.

hmm... i was thinking today about doing rei kurosawa (fatal frame 3) when i decided it woudl be too hard for me. the outfit itself is not really that detailed, but if you go for that dragon tatto, you will need a lot of help. ^^ (plus, i think that getting the top liek that would be kinda hard, but, tha is just me..) may not be what you are looking for. sorry. edit: i also found this (http://www.cameraslens.com/images/xbox/costume/mil1.jpg) to be rather nice. ^^

Well, there's always Mai Shiranui from Fatal Fury/King of Fighters. Not really complex, but it's very flashy and requires long brown hair. Or you could do Jam from Guilty Gear. Still not very complex, but...

Phantomthief- I made Sara's LOI costume. I based mine on Ayami Kojima's illustration, not the video game FMV version. While I did not make it from scratch, it was still not tremendously difficult to make. It does have details- but once you figure out where everything goes, it is not too hard. I have to say the hardest part of it is keeping the ribbons in place. It is complex, but not the most complex one I have made. I have to say that my Princess Zelda from OOT one was much more difficult and time consuming. So while it is a very beautiful and impressive costume, I sure would not nominate it for most complicated or hardest ever.

I agree that there are a lot of Final Fantasy costumes that are highly inticate, such as:

Wedding Yuna: The great thing about this dress is that even though its already fancy, it can be made even fancier! For instance, Yaya (in this pic) put lighting into the feathers on hers so the dress lights up. And although she wears it up, Yuna has brown hair.
http://images.cosplay.com/showphoto.php?photo=217953

Shiva, FFX: This thing is something I'd love to make, but it takes a ton of work. Really, any of the Final Fantasy Shivas is a tough job, but I think FFX's is the most complex, given her hair. Also, the wig is so huge I can't imagine you'd have trouble hiding your hair.

My very broad suggestion would be anything based on Yoshitaka Amano (Final Fantasy) or Hyung-Tae Kim (Magna Carta, War of Gensis) artwork. Both feature designs with a lot of intricate detailing, and neither are done with much frequency (yes, there are plenty of FF cosplayers out there, but most do in-game designs as opposed to Amano's original art).

Oh, and Rinny, I'm actually planning a Rehath/Lehas cosplay when I'm done with Lulu.

If you really want a super-complex cosplay costume, here's a really good one.

Noble Gundam from G Gundam!!
It's feminine and very complex.
If you can pull it off, you would be deemed Queen of Cosplay, literally.
I don't thiink I have ever seen a decent Gundam gundam costume, several really good Gundam pilot costumes, but not Gundam gundam.

BTW, is trinity blood released in the US? Also, is it a manga, game, or anime?

Posting this again...for some reason, I got some crazy error that wouldn't let the post go through.

Trinity Blood is originally a novel series with manga-like artwork done by THORES Shibamoto (who I've seen referred to as "the next Amano"). It became a manga recently, but the style isn't as detailed. It's also in production for being an anime slated to release this year, I believe.

It has yet to be released State-side, but if the anime comes out, it probably will be picked up, I assume. From what I know, it's a good story and the characters are interesting.

The only pics I have seen are from the calendars or the novels. If I have my info correct, there's an artbook (or something like it) coming out in September in Japan to the hefty price of about $80. I bought it anyway (preorder), so when that comes, you can be sure I'll scan the works in.

As for complex outfits...I find video game artwork to have more complex outfits, for some reason. I wonder if it's to make up for the lack of detail in the game sprites? Anyway... the ones I usually suggest have been suggested (Kim Hyung-tae's artworks [Magna Carta, War of Genesis III] and TB), but the designs for CROW II - The War of Genesis Supplemental Story look neat (Go here (http://www.m.softmax.co.kr/game/intro.asp?prevPress=1&pressBt=0)); you could check out Granado Espada (http://www.granadoespada.com), Lineage (II), Tempest (the battle angel outfits look complex), Sengokumusou (which might be Destiny Warriors?)...just hit www.rpgfan.com or www.rpgamer.com and go through the games. You never know what you'll find. www.naimoka.com is also a good one for some game art.

For anime, CLAMP is a great place to start, especially if you can find artbook pictures, as they are more detailed. Some of the dresses in the Kaitou Jeanne artbook are wonderful (http://kkj.firesenshi.com/main.php) as are some of the works from the Full Moon book (both by Tanemura Arina). Aoi Nanase's Angel Flavor artbook has some beautiful outfits as well.

A lot of the dresses in Chobits are very complex. I'd love to do some of them someday but they look extremely challenging, and there's so many of them. Also, the Evangelion plugsuits for the females should be challenging as well, and maybe even some of the Sailor Moon princess dresses.

Celes, in her opera dress, from Final Fantasy VI.

There is so much intricate detail work required on that dress. You'll be doing lots and lots of embroidery or puff painting. That's why I'm holding off to make this costume. It's WAY beyond my sewing skills at the moment. Maybe in another year or two.

I think this outfit http://www.lastexileworld.com/ab49.jpg that Ironekilz posted would be very good. Historical costumes always get lots of attention if they're done right, and this one has more cleavage than normal. Any historical costume seems to automatically have fans.

You could try a character from Gankutsuoh (AKA Count of Monte Cristo), especially Haydee, Mercedes, or Valentine.

The website has full length pictures of all major characters in several different outfits from the front, side, and back. Something tells me the staff spent too much time designing characters' clothes...

I think only one or two people have ever cosplayed this series, since it only finished airing in Japan a few weeks ago.

Evil Lili from Legend

Chobits ones are always good

Or you can always "feminize" male outfits like Vash the Stampede, Spike, Cloud, etc.

If your into technical stuff, a lit up costume would be cool. My brother's friend designs stuff like that, and he went as a lighted Tron bike for some con. You could be like, a Tron chick. that would be form fitting and complicated.

Good Luck!

Do you want to do props and armor? Or just sewing? That might be a good way to narrow things down. Choose one or two technical skills that you have that you want to showcase; I wouldn't suggest trying something new for a huge, time and money-consuming project.

Trinity blood costumes are great, one thing though, the manga version and the anime version have different outfits....... The manga ones are more complicated mind you (depending on the character) but for that, youd probaly want to wait awhile longer for it to see if more pics come out. Im just doing the basic outfit for abel, and as more pics become available, im adding to it.... And if you need any pics of the nuns, i have lots of Esther, just having trouble getting non headshots of abel.

A great type of costume is winged characters. If the wings are done really big in real feathers they ALWAYS look amazing, especially onstage. The truth is though, that if you know what youre doing, and take the costume in steps, its not going to be too hard. Details make costumes *look* complex, but are often insanely simple.......

most guilty gear character costumes are pretty complex, that and Some of the MvC2 characters such as Ruby Heart, and Marrow are complex. You could try one of those. Also Ivy and some of the Soul CAlibur girls would be a challenge.

Still looking? I have a few suggestions:

Medusa from Petshop of Horrors :: it's a VERY beautiful dress which would be quite flattering and looks to be highly complex to me with the insane amount of beading on it. The nice part is you can pick from the manga (albino Medusa) or anime (brunette Medusa), though the white one is more complex than the latter. Hell... a good majority of things from Petshop of Horrors would be considered complex. Various Reference pictures:

Some Cosplayers doing the two Medusas (http://images.cosplay.com/showphoto.php?photo=219785)
The Manga Medusa (http://images.cosplay.com/showphoto.php?photo=193979)
The Anime Medusa (http://images.cosplay.com/showphoto.php?photo=156183)

Nevan from Devil May Cry 3 :: Admittedly, I've been on a Devil May Cry streak right now, so I'm a bit biased to this, but if you want a video game character with a sexy outfit, here you go! I think the difficulty behind this costume would be the overwhelmingly nakedosity she has. It'd be spiffy if you could rig some bats up with this though.

And if you give me a day, I could probably come shooting back with another couple of characters.

Ah!

One really complex female costume WITH long brown hair and is snug-fitting is Lina Maclorchlain, from the Korean RPG/Dating sim, in her angel form:

http://www.rpgamer.com/games/other/pc/tempest/artwork/angel_color_lina.jpg

She traditionally has a long brown braid. =3

I also think Setsuka from the new SCIII game would be a little challenging. Her hair is up in a complex....bun....formation:

Well here's a question: Does it matter what it's made of? Armor, metal sheeting? Or fabric? Are you looking for complexity of design (ex. something with a lot of ruffles, straps, and parts) or complexity of the fabric pattern (ex. something with a lot of embroidery or fabric print/colours).

My suggestion is Oruha from Clover. I'm afraid I can't find a good reference picture, but she had a few outfits with metal-sort of wings.

Y'know, one thing I noticed is fighting games like Dead or Alive and Guilty Gear tend to have really complex costumes.

Also: http://rpgfan.com/pics-ps2.html Look under some of those games' artwork. You'd be surprised by what you find!

Devilman Lady, aka The Devil Lady

Long hair? Check.
Form-fitting and showing-of of the figure? Oh heck yeah check.
Complex? Well, I dunno about you, but that hair...Wowsa.

Found a couple pictures of trading cards of her two different devilman forms:
http://www.animanga.com/db/gallery/archives/anime/title/devilmanlady/trading

I'm sure there are better pics somewhere.
Oh, and when somebody suggested "Siren" earlier, I thought they might have meant "Sirene/Silene" from the old Devilman OAV...heh
Just found a site with model kits for them:

ChihuahuaYip: Yup - a bodysuit in your choice of demonic green or perfect shiny skin, and the little strips of fur pasties. Bodysuit could be latex, spandex, or fun fun bodystocking mesh. ;)
Er, wait. You were talking about Sirene? I don't remember her being totally nekkid in the OAV, but it was a decade or so ago when I saw it. I could be wrong...
Temperance: Shirow! Yes! I saw a pic once of an absolutely FANTASTIC Shirow cosplayer that was doing Major Kusanagi in the bodysuit that looks just like the "hard disk" figure I used to have. It was absolutely incredible and she had the figure to pull it off (google for shirow and "hard disk" for a reference pic).

I would recommend anything from Ragnarok Online. The costumes are insanely hard, especially the "transcendent class" costumes, wizard, or sage class. Some of the female ones are also very sexy. However, not many people play Ragnarok nowadays, so if you're worried about being recognized then it might not be good. I myself have made 2 Ragnarok costumes (easier ones XD) and had a pleasant con experience in both.

http://iro.ragnarokonline.com/game/jobintro.asp

Other ideas would be one of the Rose of Versailles gowns. They are insane and I wouldn't even dream of trying them, but if you're looking for difficult and/or complex then I would look at them. ^_^

How about Yuko-san from XXX-Holic?
http://img.sheezyart.com/medium/24/241551.jpg
She actually has multiple outfits, but that's the most famous one. And if you want you can go search google for more of her other complex outfits.

You can also try a few of Sakura's clothing from Card Captor Sakura. She has a bunch of complex ones. OR you can try picking one of her clow cards to dress up as.

There's also Chii/Freya, from Chobits who also has multiple outfits.

another is Akasha, from Queen of the Damned. I dont have a picture, but they're not hard to find, and all you'd have to do is dye your hair

Akasha would be cool ^_^ Heehee, I had wanted to make a copy of (can't think of the curly haired girls name) green dress from Interview with a Vampire, but I think I would need to rent a DVD, it seems like there where very few clear pictures of it out there, which really suprised me!

If you want to make something interesting, complex, and flaunting, try making a night elf from WoW. They can be made simple or really complex, I think with the right combination of leaves in the hair and hair ornaments, you could even wear your hair long and brown as well.
