View Full Version : Crazy thrown-out-of-Katsucon story

John Booty

Here's a crazy Katsucon story I heard yesterday from my best friend, who witnessed this personally.

There was a Chocolate Misu cosplayer. Somebody asked her for a picture, and she said, "sure, I'll pose with you". She took her whip and gently draped it (draped, not coiled or wrapped) over the guy's neck as if she was pulling him closer.

Security guards immediately swooped in and informed her that she was thrown out of the con. They escorted her away.

What the FUCK? Hearing that made me so angry.

That sounds like an urban legend... But then again, if this was at last year's Katsucon, then I'm not suprised. .

"Urban legend"?

What part of "best friend, witnessed this personally" didn't you understand? Or are you saying one of us is lying?

Come on, dude. ^_^

Edit: Yup, it was at last year's Katsucon.

Celine

I'd believe it, just because the security people were crazy (as we've discussed). Did you hear about how they escorted cosplayers to their rooms to be sure that they actually changed out of "offensive" costumes? -_-

John Booty

SORRY, THAT SOUNDS LIKE AN URBAN LEGEND, TANIA.

Keee-ripes, with all these crazy security stories I'm hearing about Katsucon, I feel like I have to be on my best behavior there (no swearing, pinkies up, etc.) because if I look at someone the wrong way they'll boot me out onto the street.. :(

Now I'm afraid to go to Katsu. @_@;; ..chuu...what if they kick me out for having lulu's hairpins...and claim that they are dangerous weapons? :B ...besides the pimptuar I'm carrying around.

But that story was insane. o.o; ... Katsu police = scary people dechu!

John Booty

You can ask Alex about this "urban legend" next time you see her, Inge. :P

Also, what if you study martial arts, and your BODY is a weapon? Would you have to leave your body in your hotel room all day long?

I heard a lot of bad stories about last years Katsu. Majority of them were problems with hotel, though - and aren't they in a different place this year.

Celine
01-19-2003, 12:52 PM
Neither story is urban legend. :P

Yes, they did relocate to a new place this year. I'm happy, because Baltimore sucks, and maybe Katsucon will be less crappy this year in a new location.

John Booty
01-19-2003, 12:59 PM
YOU SURE ITS NOT AN URBAN LEGEND? I DUNNO. (sarcasm alert! XD)

Seriously, yeah. I think Katsu will be a bit improved this year- a lot of last year's crap really was due to the hotel. I will have to ask my friend if the cosplayer was hassled by *Katsu* staff, or *hotel* staff. Now that I think of it, that's a pretty important point.

We're all gonna have fun no matter what though, that's the impotant thing. ^_^

My main reason for posting this was just as a bit of caution to anyone who might be bringing "borderline" props to the con or playing around with them in seemingly-harmless ways... it would really suck to be thrown out. I was thinking of bringing a wooden gun and maybe carrying it around in a bag, and only taking it out for photoshoots (since it probably wouldn't pass security "inspection"). When I told my friend that plan, that's when she told me the whip story.

(side note: supposing one WAS thrown out. how hard would it really be to sneak back in? i mean... costumes have got to be a nice aid in this case >:-P)

It was the hotel and not the con? Excellent, that's really good news to hear. That gives me high hopes that we won't see a repeat this year.

AW SHIT!!!!!! ::covers mouth::

Hey John Booty, thanks for telling me that. I had this great idea that I was about to go out and getting a Bondage choker for my Yuni costume since one of my group members was going to be a Pimp Moogle and there would be a leash hooked on the choker (if you don't know what one looks like, here's an idea (http://www.spookyboutique.com/boutique/jewelry/bigringchoker.jpg)). Now they could turn around and say that I was attempting sublimional message of some sex thing (hence, looking like a sex slave which was part of the intention) and get me kicked out.. dammit, that would of being such a hilarious ***king idea, but now they could kick me out. ****ers!

GOD, I totally understand with your frustration over this. They're making Anime conventions into a family thing when it's not and never quite will be!!! GRR! That pisses me off!

This Katsucon stuff is crazy O_o;;;

I'm thinking I might have to let down the hem of my Terra dress (which is ::ahem:: rather accurate) to avoid security. And I think BT's staff is staying home ;_;.

I dunno if it's that they're necessarily trying to make it into a family thing... What they should do (and would appease us), is to make everything acceptable by law acceptable at the convention. There are laws against nudity and all that- however, there are no laws against walking around in a Lum costume.

Tenshi- I wouldn't worry about your hem unless it's so short that your butt is hanging out.. ^^ I believe that if they're going to complain, it's going to be to people in bikini-style or cleavage-showing costumes, not short skirts.

It must be the cold though, cuz Otakon doesn't have such bad bizarre-ness...

those bugs are called mosquitos. They're about 2.5 inches long with a 3 inch wing span. Those of you who grew up in the south like I did know that I'm not exaggerating, lol. The south has more bugs and they're a lot bigger. Luckily, I've developed a tolerance to most of them. I get a mosquito bite, it swells a little, and then is gone all in an hour. It doesn't even itch! :p

Actually.. I -was- right there o_o;;; It's not an 'urban legend' o_o;;

They must have been between the ages of 14-15, dressed in the Bakaretsu Hunters costumes. One had a wip, and they were posing. One of them wrapped it loosely around the neck of the other one...
Then this older security lady came by, telling them they were at a family convention and that they were dressed inappropriately o_o

They were in bathing suits! There was nothing inappropriate! This wasn't 'public', this was a hotel, and haven't you seen people in hotels in bathing suits, going to the pool?

I was upset to see that, and I'm glad that Katsucon will never be in that hotel again o_o;;

Wow, phew. I'm also wearing a mini skirt too for one of my costumes and if I bend down to touch my toes, people would have a clear panty shot view from behind me :o. Which is why I'm wearing a bikini bottom to cover it, especially when I might be doing a DDR compeition wearing that costume... oh boy.

And Oshi, I have seen HUGE ASS MOSQUITOS! I have a beach house that is 1/4 of a mile away from a marsh (huge breeding ground for them along with the water moqasins.. those damn water snakes, however it's spelled) and I have seen those critters be tiny like you said to be huge almost what Sci described.

Actually all hotels have dresscodes. And fancy-schmancy hotels like the one last year have tighter dress codes. I bet bathing suits are only allowed in the pool area and you have to wear something on top of them as you go to the pool. That could be why these people were stopped.

Not going into personal opinions on cosplayers (put some clothes on people), I am very sad that there was a change of hotel because it was a simply lovely venue and offered great photo ops. Some of my best cosplay pictures were taken in nooks and crannies of that hotel.

As for the "wrapping around the neck"... I've been guilty of it myself (with chains) at a number of cons... I will try to remember not to do it again where I can be seen. X___X

Gah.. they should make a anime con video for hotel staff and make them watch it. That way they know whats instore for them. It's so not fair to everyone who pays money to stay at these things, and then being told " NO you cant wear that get out!" What is it, like all of 2% of people at that hotel are not there for the con? It's just upsetting cause Katsucon is a good convention, its just the hotels it ends up in cause alot of crap. My friends and I ran into the same problem at Ohayo con. The hotel staff was freaking out at people, so bad it made one of my friends cry. We reported the person. Needless to say we were all very angry at how inconsiderate the hotel staff was. I hope Katsu gets the baltimore convention center sometime. There would probably be a whole lot less stress.

This is true, but while I don't know if they were kicked out of the con completely... well, if they were, I'd be more pissed because, is it so hard to simply ASK someone to put more clothes on instead of kicking them out? Really x.x;

> It's so not fair to everyone who pays money to stay at these things, and then being told " NO you cant wear that get out!"

No. The con is picking a hotel, the con should pick a hotel that has a dresscode that is in line with what they expect/allow from their costumers. All hotels have specific rules, the hotel should not be asked to change as there are non-convention people in those hotels, and they must uphold their rules.

> What is it, like all of 2% of people at that hotel are not there for the con?

And the rest of the year, it's 100%. These people have the right to be in the hotel they reserved rooms for. These people can impact business the rest of the year. Remember the con is only one weekend for the hotel, and there are a lot of other ones.

> It's just upsetting cause Katsucon is a good convention, its just the hotels it ends up in cause alot of crap.

I think the attendees cause more "crap" for the hotel then the other way around myself. Did you see all the defacement that happened last year over room prices? O_O The destruction?

> well, if they were, I'd be more pissed because, is it so hard to simply ASK someone to put more clothes on instead of kicking them out?

Agreed. ^__^
I think that's what they mostly did though. It's weird she'd get kicked out for that...

John Booty
01-20-2003, 10:31 AM
I realize that hotels have rules... so part of the blame goes to Katsucon for picking a hotel that obviously wasn't cool with typical con goings-on.

Hopefully this year's hotel will be a better fit!

The way my friend Alex described it was that the guard was like, "you have to leave the convention" or something along those lines. She wasn't sure if they were being thrown out entirely or not, although she was under the impression that they were being kicked out.

From everything I've heard it does sort of sound like hopefully they maybe had to just go change or something... like, "leave the convention until you are dressed properly" or something. My friend's got the worst memory ever, so getting exact details from her is always a little iffy.

Ohh... I'm surpised I missed that. Rosiel is absoluetly right. I'm also a lifeguard at a Hotel pool (the Holiday Inn.. evil bastards won't give me a discount for a room @ Otakon) and this one day I was wearing my lifeguard bikini top and sweatpants into this bar. One of the Holiday Inn staff personel caught me going into it while I was on duty, even when there was no people in the pool (yea, I'm that stupid to let people drown). The pool area was right next to the bar and this bitch told me that I either had to put a shirt on or leave, especially when I was on duty and wasn't supposed to be in the bar area... when all I was doing was getting a quick drink and returning to my stand! My God! How as I to prove that I was a current employee so I can get a free Sherrly Temple? Grr... but yea.

It's also a major health code issue to that hotel staff have to enforce as well. You can't walk into McDonalds everyday w/out a shirt or shoes anymore. Can you imagine an old guy walking around the lobby in only speedos? Yea, real gross!

Ranma: Don't even mention those! I've been badly bitten by those suckers too and they itch like the devil, more than mosquito bites. I've also have gotten letters from my bf from Parris Island, SC which is a Marine base INFESTED with sandfleas and he's been complaining in almost every letter how his arms are swollen with red marked bites. He's begged me to tell him how to get rid of them in a natural way (using mud or alcohol would do the trick, especially eating foods that contain B1 vitamins) since they don't give you bug repellent in training >_<. I'm pretty sure that you know what I'm talking about too, lol.

I can agree with you on the atendee's part and anything that is vandelized, but the people that did the damage should be the ones paying for it. [understood if they're not caught though] I'm hoping things will turn out better then they've been sounding lately. o_0

I agree with Shadra, As long as the hotel staff asks in some degree of respect it wouldn't be a problem. I just don't like the screaming and making a scene as I've seen a few of them do.

I completely believe that story...actually I do remember the Tira Misu costume that was with her, she got escorted to change, I am pretty sure. The staff sucked last year. I was like 10feet from an escolator gettting pics taken and secerty yelled at me and told me to step away from the escolator, eventhough, I wasn't ANYWHERE near it. Plus no one was around since it was 2 in the morning. BAKA KATSUCON!! I heard they are putting the con back at the small hotel. Last year was pretty big and 8,000 people still couldn't be copasitated there. I can only imagine what this year will be like *sigh* -_-

My biggest complaint about Katsucon last year was while waiting in line for the cosplay. We got in line about a half hour before it started and almost all of us were sitting on the floor waiting. The hotel staff came around and told all of us to stand up, sitting on the floor was not permitted, it could damage their carpets.

Okay, I don't know if some immature idiots were drawing on the floor, or tearing up carpet, but come on, what's wrong with sitting on the floor? My feet were killing me from walking around all day, all I wanted to do was sit.

But, I'm still not happy about the con moving back to the old hotel. The traffic is terrible, there's no place to park, two years ago the hotel was crowded. Don't even think about trying to use the elevators..... Blah........

(even with my complaints, I'm still going to the con though....so if I have a bad time, its my own fault.)

1) The bugs..@_@;; I'll have to scarf down on the banananas and junk to keep em away from meee~ ^^;;

2) the security and it's polocies. ^^:; I jsut wonder if PJ's are approperiate around the hotel..^^;

._. Katsu is in the same hotel it was in two years ago. For what it's worth, the front desk staff seemed genuinely sweet, and the maids were always nice, and seemed genuinely interested, if only slightly freaked out ^^;;

._. And the hotel makes good buffalo wings too, if you're into that sort of thing. Well. This was all 2 years ago anyway, who knows whats gone on since then? Still, going into such a situation, best to hope for... the best? ^^;; ohoho.

._.;; No... not looking forward to the parking though. But after Boston and Vegas, I ph33r no traffic. *gets run over by a herd of cars* ...

Edit: And uhhmmm.... ya.... if your costume has uncomfortable shoes... maybe bring a pair of slippers, or something?? ^^;; They come in handy, for when you have to climb 8 flights of stairs to get to your room. It can be so much faster than waiting for that elevator, o-ho. Fuzzy pink bunnies are usually more comfortable in that scenario than 3" heels :3

I don't care what kind of shoes you are wearing, after walking around at a con for nine hours straight your feet start to get tired.

And at eleven o'clock at night, I don't feel like taking 8 flights of stairs. Also the stairs were fire exits, and after going up 8 flights you would find that the door would be locked and you either banged on it till someone heard you and opened it, or back down the stairs you went to wait for the elevator. Most people who were using the elevator would only go up one floor. Now this all refers to the old Katsucon hotel in Arlington, not Baltimore.

Lilli

Hehee, I was trying to be optimisitic ^-~ LOL, I don't feel like 8 flights of stairs at 11 am, for that matter! Ah, but it's good for us! It'll put hair on our chests! And um... help us build character? ^^;;

Hmmm. Bring a costume that involves a chair? LOL ^^; I'd say "hey, the elevators aren't so bad, after 8 pm!" But... it'd be a lie, LOL. Ya... this is in reference to the Katsucon hotel in Arlington. I didn't remember much of a problem with the elevators from Baltimore...

the costume actually didnt have shoes, but since it'd probably be hard to get past that policy for the whole con, i made them....

still, theyll probably be atleast somewhat better than high heels...right? *prays and plans to bring extra bandaids* @_@

<<Hey manz, I'm going as siren...I hope that's not tooooo offensive or anything.....I'm all worried that my, er, for lack of better description, "boob coverings" will fall off and that I'll get arrested for indecent exposure...>>
Uh... yea that could be a problem right there. Siren sounds cool, but if your concerned about the "boob coverings" falling off I wouldn't risk it. I don't even know if the hotel staff will let you walk around in that sort of revealing costume... but I know Otakon would. I would take a back up costume (if you have one) in case you're screwed or carry a T-shirt if it does fall off and only take it off for photoshoots? It's up to you.

<<Yuni-chan, you haven't even called me for over 10 days... There's a lot of stuff we have to get settled before Katsucon... >>
Mega- I appreciate it if you PM me about it... even though it's now a little too late to do that. I'll definetly talk to you today but just don't get near me because I have coddies right now :(. Be surprised to see me show up for your lunch break since I'm not going to school today. ;)
