View Full Version : original costumes

i didn't know where else to put this thread so i guess other costumes is fine.

i was just wondering if anyone else is makin' original costumes or what they think about them. i always hear such negative remarks about original desgins so i was wondering if i should drop my own idea and start workin' on an actual anime or manga character.

I think some original designs work out really well. It depends on how elaborate they turn out to be I think.

01-20-2003, 12:05 AM
Original designs are just as good. Or just as bad. It just depends on how well designed it is... :)

But, I don't think it would have the impact of an existing popular design. Just picture yourself seeing a really good costume from a series you don't know... even though it's really good, do you get impressed by it much if you're not familiar with the series?

If it's a good design, go for it! :)

*imagines guys in "original" ikari shinji-like designs, except with green shirts and yellow shirts. No wait, he's in a white t-shirt. And jeans. And sneakers. GAAA!*

*shutters at the thought of original shinji ikari designs*

lol, glad ya like my avatar!

I'm cosplaying a doujin/role play character of mine for AX. it's a design I'm proud of, and I think will go over well.

I think a lot of the negativety towards original costumes comes from people who get annoyed by seeing other people run around in half-assed assortments of unmatching accessories and costume parts proclaiming they're an original character. to a lot of people that probably seems like they didn't care enough to do real cosplay and just pulled something out of nowhere to try and look cool... I personally could care less what ANYone else is dressed as, but.. *shrug*

Mmmm....good call Soshi. I must say, I am less likely to pay much attention to a costume if its just some leather boots and cat ears, rather than Yaya's fire fairy costume.

I myself have made one original character that looked sort of doll-like. I just wanted to do a black ballerina costume, toe shoes and all. So, I did. Original costumes are a great creative outlet, and while they might not really -belong- at an anime convention, who the heck cares? You're there to have fun right? I figured you payed that thirty some dollars to get in, wear whatever you want.

01-22-2003, 03:56 AM
Yaya's fire fairy costume= amazing beauty o.o

I've been designing characters for this manga I just kinda work on when I need a creative outlet, and some of the costumes I'm really proud of the designs ^^ But, I was always afraid that if I actually made it (a process of a good 30+ hours...elaborateness) people would look down on me as not an actual *real* cosplayer. I think as long as the effort and love is there, it should be fair game ^^

01-22-2003, 11:23 AM
I would love to do it someday....I really actually look forward to it. I hope when that day comes and I make a really cool original costume, all cosplayers would have the maturity to not harass me about it. Unfortunatly some dont, and feel like they have the right to dictate what people wear, or just what they want to see people wearing. Thus the reason for this discussion. But I love seeing creative original costumes.

01-22-2003, 04:58 PM
i actually think creating and wearing original costumes is fun. It shows off your creative side...well so does making a anime/manga/game based costume

Shoot, I am wearing two of my original designs for hall cosplay

01-25-2003, 03:26 PM
I love making original costumes! I'm going to be wearing one to Animazement this year. It's lots of fun! I usually end up basing my ideas for an original costume off of many different designs in actual characters.

01-25-2003, 04:02 PM
I did one of my characters from my comic for dragoncon ->

I'm hoping to rethink the makeup a bit and wear it again at A-kon.
Yeah, if your original character is really eye catching (like someone said, Yaya's Fire Fairy) it'll definitely work. And it can be a lot of fun :D

01-25-2003, 06:53 PM
I've considered doing RP character's that I have. They are fine as long as you don't expect people to know who you are... A friend of mine got mad at me once for not recognizing her original manga character.. O_o Anywho, if you want to do it, do it. ^_^

01-26-2003, 08:10 AM
I'd like to do some of my original characters sometime. ^_^ I got some characters that I draw for comics and I have my own little sailor senshi (XD I'm silly) and stuff like that. :D

01-26-2003, 12:32 PM
I don't know when I am going to wear this...but my Sera Myu Sailor Astarte costume...will be nice once it's done.....*looks at schdule and amount of work it will take* arghh....oh well

01-26-2003, 08:00 PM
As long as the design is inventive and unique (rather than cat ears & some vinyl garment), I love seeing "original" costumes. I'm pushing my own creative outlet towards making EGL and FRUiTS-inspired outfits.

Jenny (Daitenshi) made a kick-ass original character costume and I'm hoping someone will come up with a picture of it. *hint hint*

01-27-2003, 10:34 AM
I'm doing an origional character mainly to experiment with wireform and fiberglassing.. but needless to say, it'll all be themed the same way. My goal is that people will come up to me at katsucon and say, "What new unreleased anime are you from?" .. Anyways. My actual costume is going to be a suprise. Only a select few know the details of it.. and it's going to stay that way til Katsu :3

01-28-2003, 09:32 PM
I might be making an orignal character, based on the Satyrs in the Changeling RP games, if ever we get a LARP game going on. (LARP=Live Action RP)

02-01-2003, 07:42 PM
Me, I do original versions of existing characters, but it's not always guaranteed that people will recognize the character, so I try to make it look like a good original cosplay in the end.

I don't mind original cosplays at all, as long as their well constructed and tasteful ^_^ I'm not too keen on things just thrown together. Although I was guilty of that a few years ago, heh heh.

02-02-2003, 02:24 PM
*pokes Twinkle*

I made an original character for Halloween, and I plan to wear the costume at Dracon*Con =D

I look like I should be in a fighting game XD

02-02-2003, 03:09 PM
i think that original cosplay is really cool, since its usually a lot harder than normal cosplay, since you have to create it ALL from scratch. i would love to make one sometime, but it takes a whole lot of dedication...
so its really cool to see some original cosplay at a con ^_^

02-04-2003, 04:37 AM
me too.. i like original cosplay.
i have make one b4, its a really easy outfit.

my friend has upload it:

02-04-2003, 11:41 PM
I will probably cosplay some of my rpg characters at some point. I designed some rockin' threads for them.

02-09-2003, 05:37 AM
If it looks too much like an anime/manga char's costume, youll get bashed. and dont mix differnt char's costume. you have to make sure that if you do something simmler, make it differnt some how.. but oroginal ideas are good. like like beinging something of your own to life.. maybe you;ll become a fashion artist! :D

02-13-2003, 12:15 AM
Original costumes are great! Of course if they are not eye catching(in some sort of positive original way, sexy, beautiful, etc) then they have not been very well thought out.

I actually have a couple of original costumes that I would love to make. Problem is they were meant for a girl to wear. I would love to show off my favorite one at this years Dragoncon. If anyone wants to volunteer for that I'll send you a pic of the costume! Dont worry, its quite tasteful.

03-12-2003, 09:53 PM
I think original costumes can be more fun. Simply because you know that you are the only one ever to cosplay that character. Kind of the same with somewhat unknown characters. All the costumes I am going to make this year are not widely popular. But I like that idea. I have nothing against popular characters (like yuna or official sailor senshi) but I want my work to be remembered and stand out. Anywho, me two cents...

03-16-2003, 06:17 PM
I think original costumes are as cool as real Anime costumes...

If fact my boyfriend and I are going to Otakon as Charactors from our own story line. My charactor Velvet is a Kitsune.... I plan to go in her Human form, she always wears cute clothes.

So keep the dream alive and stick with original.... Too many people go as the same charactors.... That's cool but sooo common. No one else can come as your charactor!

03-16-2003, 06:20 PM
Oh yeah ... being yourself counts alot who cares if someone doesn't like your costume if you like it thats # 1 !!!!!

03-18-2003, 07:19 AM
Sounds like everyone has a great attitude regarding original costumes. I second the notion, as I enjoy seeing creativity come to life with more than just figuring out how to make something. I used to be almost doubtful of myself when I would add elements to my projects, not knowing if people would accept the "changes". It's so good to know that everyone can appreciate and respect each other's creative juices ^_-.

03-19-2003, 05:36 AM
You betcha.... Originality is something that is actually cool now that the word is out ! lol

I don't think that making original characters of yourself is a bad idea, I think that it puts on test your abilities and creativity.
I've made only one original character cosplay, but I still don't have pics  Is a medieval witch, I used a black old fashion dress that I've already had, just added a few details. I'll take pictures soon :D
The next original character is kinda dominatrix based on Mana from Malice Mizer. Is for a Visual K performance.

03-24-2003, 03:26 PM
Hitomi I love your style !!! My original charactor is actually quite innocent even though she's a teenager her innocense and naive like a child. She was raised in a Scientific Research facility where the experimentation which set up how she turned out personality wise.

Though I am still having trouble figuring out what to put her in that is compleately innocent looking and sweet...
Any thoughts would be helpful !!!!!

Though I am still having trouble figuring out what to put her in that is compleately innocent looking and sweet...

What does she look like? What color is her hair, and what style is it in? I could draw a picture for you...I like designing stuff like that. Pm me if you want.

03-28-2003, 07:13 AM
Thank you Miroku

03-29-2003, 04:35 PM
I design loads of original characters from Juu and my days of writing whole notebooks full to the BRIM with bios off our own characters! I usually designed what they wore. [foreshadow of cosplay, maybe...] I was gonna make an original fighter for AZ, but didn't....maybe i'll do it still! I like seeing oriignal costumes. Maybe even more then Anime characters. Because there's so many of them and only one original! I plan on doing a crossover between two WB animes. I will not speak anymore since someone may beat me to it!

03-29-2003, 09:23 PM
I'm doing TWO original costumes: One is for Miwako (from Paradise Kiss) and the other is from Calling From Within (please see spam board and comment :P):

04-03-2003, 08:14 AM
cool ideas !

04-11-2003, 08:28 PM
The coolest costume I ever saw was an original one, just a few days ago at SakuraCon. If anyone went, they may have seen her- she had hair that looked like tiny dreadlocks transitioning from red to orange to yellow, geisha makeup and an original outfit that was something between a kimono and a Jedi robe. It was beautifully done, with details that she obviously took a great amount of time perfecting. So really, it's not whether or not the costume's original, it's how much time and effort you spend on it. I've seen crappy anime cosplayers get just as many dirty looks as crappy original cosplayers.

Negative remarks on original designs? I guess some body does that but in my personal opinion, if a cosplayer proves they can also design, and not only sew, it raises my opinion of their skills ^^

Original cosplay can be really great... if you are an artist it is a good way to enjoy two of your hobbies at once. ^.^ I'm making a personal dragon girl cosplay so that I get to make wings, horns, and a tail as well as playing with the makeup(scales) and design the clothes. It lets people see your personal style preference in some cases too.

05-19-2003, 01:34 PM
no problem at all!

i drew and inked the new design, on paper it looks good but i know when you make it, it'll look so awesome!!!

i'll scan the black and white image first and send that to ya. if you like it then i'll color. if not, i'll just draw a new one, i mean it is a little bit sloppy but you get the idea.

05-20-2003, 04:34 AM
orginal costumes??? Totally cool!!! Just be sure to put as much work into it as you would with a "normal" character and I'm sure it will turn out great

05-21-2003, 08:38 PM

05-24-2003, 05:32 PM
I think original costumes are a wonderful idea..and a wonderful way to express yourself. At Otakon I'm planning to mix my love of gothic fashion and Traditional Japanese fashion to see what I get. *crosses fingers* Hoping everything works out...

05-24-2003, 09:00 PM
oo i hope so too! good luck and i hope it works out! your original costume sounds like it'll be really great ^^

05-25-2003, 03:28 AM

05-27-2003, 10:21 AM
lol, thanks!

i think ppl still say kudos, of course i think of that snack food when i see that word.

05-28-2003, 08:19 AM
If your going to be making a orinignal character its best to stick with the design of the show. Go with the clothing style they wear. Original characters takes allot of creativity and i do not know why people shun you for that. Their bastards

05-28-2003, 04:55 PM
I'd like to do one from the manga that I'm working on (And trying to get published... but dumb Marvel had to post that big "MUST BE 18 TO HAVE YOUR ORIGINAL WORK PUBLISHED on their site...)
Anyhoo, my designs and costumes for my chars. are too big and elaborate and would probably cost a fortune and a half. I guess they're not very "cosplayer friendly", huh? ^_^;

05-28-2003, 06:07 PM
I like original cosplay. There's the whole EGL thing and then there are apparently the whole big group of us that have RPG characters we woud like to do. I know I posted a thread about it before, whether cosplaying my #18 rpg character would be a good idea or not. I plan to do the costume and hopefuly get the other people that rp'd with me to someday make their own costumes and we'll all go to one con dressed in our uniforms. ^_^ yay.

05-28-2003, 06:15 PM
I am planning to do my original matrix character ^_^.

06-07-2003, 04:15 PM
I have an original dragon costume that I plan to make for a local con this December... I'm rather pleased with the design, the image is in my gallery and costumes list. Yay, I get to have wings, horns, a tail, and scales. *_*
