Yes! I love AUSA! It may be small, but it has a warm atmosphere and it's not as crowded as some conventions. It's also less expensive and in a good area. Tyson's corner has a huge mall in it, complete with a food court and a few resteraunts. (Including the Rainforest Cafe! ^_^) I always have a lot of fun there. Also, it's not in the heat of summer or the dead of winter, so you really have no risk of freezing your toes off or collapsing of heat stroke. (Well, this year it's in november, so I dunno... :/)

Basically, it's my favorite convention. :D

This would be over a 7 hour drive for me to go to. Was wondering if anyone can help me with comparing it to any other cons this year. I think that would give me an idea if I should go or not. I have gone to AnimeBoston, PortConMaine, AnimeNext, and Connecticon.

Went to AN last year, I'd say that it was a similar size to last year's AUSA. Lots of cosplayers, very nice people and the staff actually have a clue. If you have a chance, join us it's worth the drive, says the person who could win the "traveled the shortest distance to the con award".

I don't know...I wanted to go, but then I saw their commercial on their website, which rubbed off as uber-otaku-geeky, so now I'm having second thoughts.

I already have the hotel booked, knowing I can cancel it if I don't go, but there's a good chance I'm probably going to go. Especially since it's going to be at the time of the year when not many other cons are going on. I wasn't impressed with AnimeNext this year at all and just don't want to drive 8 hours to feel that way about another convention.

The commericial sucks, please ignore it.
The actual con is really nice, this will be my second year going. I really enjoyed myself last year, its a much smaller con than other ones in the area (Katsu and Ota), but that doesn't make any less good.

AnimeUSA was probably the least entertaining convention I have been too. Being 20 this month, I found everyone there was around 14 years old and running around all day. There was not much to do because of the size. The music guest last year was Camino who I did not particularly care for. This year is MOVE WHICH WOULD BE THE ONLY REASON WHY I WOULD GO THIS YEAR BECAUSE I LIKE THEM A TON. I like the Katsucon/AMA size cons because there is a ton more to do and people to meet/talk to. I found AnimeUSA to not be worth the 4-5 hour trip. I probably will skip it this year even though Move is great.

*nods* yes, I agree with your second to last sentence. It's only 20 minutes away from my house, so that's one of the main reason's why it's my favorite con. It isn't worth a road trip. I like to think of it as a newbie con! ;)

I just realized I have college break starting that friday so odds are I will be going because of Move and lack of excuses. But still I don't recommend the road trip unless you like Move/Eurobeat. The hotel is fairly compact. Also bring a swimsuit. Once again my recommendation is this con is way too small to be shelling out some $$$.

Even though AUSA is a bit small. They always do a great job with the planning and times. U can do almost everything cause it's easy to get rAound. If u have friends this is great con cause can hang w/ them. U can also meet other people more easily.

AUSA has been the only convention I've been to so far, but I enjoyed it. The staff is really great and that's one of the biggest issues at some conventions. I obviously can't compare it to other conventions, but AUSA seems a lot warmer that many conventions I've heard about.

AUSA is a fantastic convention this is my 4th year going. Out of Katsucon, Otakon and AnimUSA, AUSA is my favorite. Key thing to remember is that its small, I know some folks come expecting Otakon/Anime Expo megacon, this isn't it, but after they got over that they enjoyed the convention very much.
Everyone is nice, and there's a calm relaxing atmosphere.

AUSA was my very first anime convention, and even after attending Otakon twice, I still have to say I really love AUSA. It's in a wonderful location, and for being in only it's 7th year now, it's quite large. AUSA DOMINATES AMA, because I attended AMA for the first time this year and I really... really didn't like it. Unlike AMA, the cosplay at AUSA actually STARTS when it says it will. AUSA is also very clean, and now crowded at all. They have a great selection of things to do and see, and it's an overall wonderful convention if you'd like to go to one without a bunch of lines. Of course, MOVE is going to be a big attraction this year, so I'll definately be going to see that. :3

I have a queston. Would yall say AUSA is bigger or smaller then say, Nekocon or AZ?

Thanks, lots of good info here. I'm actually used to going to cons by myself and don't mind at all. Makes it easier when I want to do something and don't have to worry about asking someone else what they want to do. Though, this may be a good chance to go with someone who can't usually go because of lack of money. If he can go, I'm there. With all the cons I have gone to, I think I do like the smaller ones better. Less crowds.

Smaller. Nekocon is in a convention center, whereas AUSA is not.

IMO I love AUSA. Its my favorite con, I went to it for the first time last year. I truly love this con to pieces. The size is great and everyone is so nice <3.

I'll be going this November for the first time, and it sounds like it will be fun, but the AUSA forums (not here, the convention website forums) are making me feel the con will be a little TOO laid back, and will be laxing the boundaries between adolescent and adult fun.

^.^ AUSA sounds like it'll be fun. This year will be my first year going (hopefully). It's nice to hear that it's well organized and welcoming. I've got a question though;
during the masquerade, is the audience pretty respectful? I went to AN this year, and there were alot of disrespectful comments towards the Masquerade participants.

( I only ask because I'm planning on entering this year with my kid brother)

Since I've only been to AZ 2004, it is also slightly smaller than that.

To be totally honest, AUSA is only worth going to if you're in the local area. I wouldn't bother doing extensive driving because it's not that great or big. Last year was a BIG disappointment because this youth laywer group complained about not getting enough space and the convention was forced to share their space. >.> It wasn't their fault, that I understood, but there should of been better planning between Sheraton, the convention, and the youth group organizers :(

The dealer's room is the best place to visit. I found a lot of rare stuff I couldn't catch at Otakon (FFXI doujinshis, keychains, figurines, etc.). The Masquerade and the rave (even though that was where I hooked up w/ my bf a year ago:heart: ) was the worst I've ever been compared to any convention. Too "newbish." The track lists just... disturbed the flow of the dance itself. Throwing the Price is Right remix after playing a nice trancy hit like sandstorm? Come on guys... :/ There were very few good skits at the masquerade, but the rest made me think, "What drugs were these people on when writing the scripts?!" because they were just... so out of line. Mixing original characters and not sticking to the plot is not a good idea because you will loose your audience at the drop of a hat. Sorry, I was just not that impressed at all.

I'm only going for one day and that's just to see MOVE since I've been waiting for YEARS for them to come back to the USA and throw a concert. Not cosplaying, I just wanna see the concert so badly! If you all never heard of them or don't really listen to the Initial D soundtrack, they will rock your world. Especially if you're a trance/Eurobeat fan you will not want to miss this concert.
