View Full Version : Thursday at Yaoi-con?

I'm a newbie to the west coast and Yaoi-con and so I have a few questions. Does anything happen on Thursday such as a pre-reg? I'll be arriving in California at 11 AM but my friends wont be getting in until 11 PM and so...I'll be lonely and bored for 12 hours ^^;; And I'm too chicken to go out and see any of the San Fransisco sites alone. Are there any sites to see in relatively close proximity to the convention? I'm in the main hotel so I was planning to just lug my stuff there and sit in the lobby entertaining myself. I'm used to pre-registering Thursday, hanging out in a simple costume and just having a nice relaxing day before the excitement of the con really starts up. So I guess I'm curious to see if anyone else will be chilling on Thursday.

Its coming fast ^^ Can't wait to see you all there.

The con is by the airport, so really, no there isn't anything to do around the con unless you want to go to teh Grocery store and stock up on food. As for con activities on Thursday, pretty much it comes down to pre-registration, nothing of any real merrit happens till Friday night.

My plane arrives in San Francisco at 10:55 am. My plan is to drop off my stuff at the hotel (gotta love free baggage check) and hit the city. I want to hit City Lights bookstore and probably wander around the city after that. Tohma, if you're interested we can get a group together for sightseeing, sure there are others arriving early.

That could be interesting. GreenFire and I are arriving about noonish, and we'll want to wait for HeeroJF because he's staying in our room, but after we get checked in and our stuff is stashed, I'd like to go sightseeing. Yaoicon's site had nice info on taking the train or buses to downtown, I'd like to see Japantown if nothing else.

But there IS pre-reg pickup Thursday night, Sixshot?

Our other plan is to walk over to Osho's for dinner...it's under a mile, we're healthy young women, we can walk that far for Japanese. :)

I would love to hang out with other cosplay.com people ^_^ I'm a little shy at first though so don't be surprised if I'm quiet and hang back a little. I don't know how far I want to stray from the hotel yet or how frazzled I'll be after my flight (have only really flown twice and that was to Japan and back and never alone U_U).

If we get some good plans going you can probably count me in though ^_^ Do you all normally cosplay something simple on Thursday or just do street clothes?

Okie dokie. Time for lil' old Lin to do something not rant related:

If any of you folk are around early, I'm a local, and would be glad to meet'cha around. :D

I'm goth kitti, in case any of ye were at the Fanime Yaoi events. ^_^ I'm sure we'll be seeing much of each other, but considering my reputedly bishie status, probably more of me than of you. ^_~

same here, I happen to be a local myself ^^ I wouldn't mind hunting down y-con goers and show them around the area, there's a recently opened In-n-Out Burger right across the bridge from the convention area, TOTAL W00TAGE THERE!!!! lmao

there's a cyber cafe, Tapioca Express, Quickly's, and other neat stuff around the area. ^^

and then...there's EBK lol catch him on thursday while he's still preparing for the con lol

There's an In-n-Out now? Sweet, someplace to get good and cheap food by the con. I won't have to live off of Cup of noodles again.

And what, prey do tell, is wrong with Cup O' Noodles? It happens to be one of only two items -I- can cook. >_<

Why BART Boy, I'm surprised you didn't suggest local transport to the City ;)

Which reminds me, I still have to PLAN such things out if I go. There's some things looming that may pull me out, but until that stuff solidifies, I can say I'll be there. If not, I'm sure people will figure it out quicklike.

Can any of the locals recommend any vegetarian friendly places within walking distance of the con?

Also want to hit Japantown depending on when everyone is going I can either meet up with everyone at the hotel or catch up later. Still time to figure everything out.

Tohma: I'll be cosplaying Thursday evening (leaning toward Saya from Blood:TLV). If I see you in the lobby, I'll say hi and chat for a bit and invite you to join me, but I won't push you if you're not in the mood to go anywhere. I'm a bit on the shy side myself, since the newest members of my con group cling to me at cons, i've been forced to be more outgoing.

Usually there's not a lot of stuff happening on Thursday for Yaoi-con, since pre-reg. doesn't start til Friday afternoon. But if people show up I might show up also, and cosplay maybe one costume. Something simple like Tsuzuki Asato from Yami no Matsuei since my costume-list in-addition to photo-taking will be bussssy starting on Friday.

Last year I checked the restaurants closest to the hotel, and the only thing within walking-distance is a small market or Tacqueria nearby. You'd have to drive to get to the Elephant Bar and a few other restaurants, as well as the other food places across the other side of the bridge over I-101 like the In-And-Out, etc.. Last year I made runs to Taco Bell and such, and unless you had time to spare to walk to these eateries, I recommend driving or hitching a ride (from a friend)

Wow. The only Elephant Bar I know of is in San Jose. I wasn't aware of one in Frisco...

Either way, if there are people there there's fun to be had.

But there IS pre-reg pickup Thursday night, Sixshot?

No, there are no planned con activities taking place at all on Thursday. The convention does not start until Friday afternoon, with Registration beginning at around 2pm (from what I've last heard) and then Opening ceremonies and some panels and video programming. The Dealers' Room and Fan Market will not open until Saturday.

I recommend catching a cab or BART into the city and enjoying the many wonderful things SF has to offer. The Yaoi-Con website's Location page has much info on what to do in SF, as well as tips on getting to the downtown area from the convention site (since we're located near the airport again this year).

http://www.yaoicon.com/location.html

I highly recommend going to the amazing Asia SF (http://www.asiasf.com/), a restaurant/nightclub with the best damned drag/trannie show on the planet. Those girls are simply gorgeous and make me want to weep for my own un-gorgeousness. Woe.

^.~

But make reservations -- there's no way you'd get into eat without one.

Definetly say hi ^_^ I'll be dressed up...not sure as what yet since I'll have to wear it on a plan and travel from NC to Houston to SF in it...dont want to get too many wierd stares XD

I'll probably be dressed as either Killua from Hunter X Hunter or Quatre from Gundam Wing (depending on how hot it is in NC...and how hot it is expected to be in SF).

I'll probably be plopped in some corner of the lobby, listening to music and doing something to entertain myself. Anyone who sees me, Feel free to interupt ^_^

Well, as there's no way I can fit a fourth costume in my suitcase for Thursday eve, I doubt GreenFire and I will be cosplaying. We will certainly have the time to make a walk over the bridge to the other restaurants. I can walk up to a mile without griping, and when I checked mapquest, most of the decent places were under a mile from the hotel.

But yeah, I was thinking, as long as there was time, trying to get into the city to see Japantown and/or Castro Street would be a great idea. And it sounds like there will be.

There's a list of restaurants available on the con website:

[PDF]
http://www.yaoicon.com/docs/restaurants.pdf

One cafe I can recommend that isn't far from the hotels at all is the Bayside Cafe, which is located on Mitten Road. You'd just go outside the hotel, go right on the main road (Old Bayshore Highway, I think) and walk about two blocks to Mitten. Turn right on Mitten and the cafe is on the other side of the little office building on your left hand sign. They should have a sign on the road.

They're usually only open for breakfast and lunch on during the week, but we've convinced them to open during the weekend for breakfast and lunch. They've got a small salad bar, sandwiches, some cook-to-order items (esp. for breakfast) and pre-packaged snackage (which saved my life last year  ). MUCH cheaper than the hotels' fare.

Attack the BART Boy! *Runninglungetackle!* Ok, that out of the way...

I'll be coming in Thursday as well. I'm looking at arriving early in the morning, about 10AM I think. I'm having to take BART and then catch a cab to the hotel since some stuff came up with my ride.

Sadly, for the next week or two I may not be able to get online to see what is going on. However, if any of you are up near the hotel at that point, that know me, please say hi!

For those who don't know me... Er... I'll be carrying a plush wolf with me. A little gray guy, and may have some cat ears on the table. You can just call me by Ryochan or Kat and if I respond, it's me. If not, oops!

Later!

BART Boy: I'll probably be there at the Westin on Thursday around 8:00-8:30pm, and just hanging out there for a little bit. If I haven't eaten dinner, perhaps I'll take a few people in my car and we'll go grab a bite to eat somewhere along the highway, like at In-&-Out Burger since I haven't been to one in a while. :) (Gotta eat cheap, since the con will have yet to begin!) ;)

I just hope that I can find a parking-spot away from the hotel for free, since I don't want to pay the $5 or $7 for just parking in the Westin parking lot for 1-2 hours..

If anyone plans to cosplay on Thursday night, I'll have my camera to take pictures, and then post them online later that night. :skidude2: I might wear Shinji for TH night, but I'll probably leave the cosplaying that night to you guys/girls. ;)

T-Minus about 45 minutes till we leave to travel.

I probably won't be cosplaying on Thursday. The only reason I may have a plush wolf and cat ears early in the morning is so one of my roomates can spot me. Any other cosplay will be along the lines of room only, temporary costumes which no one would recognize anyway.

Okay, BART Boy, since you seem so knowledgeable. I want to pick your brain. :)

GreenFire and I (and hanazuke and HeeroJF probably as well, since we're all rooming) intend to wander around SF, see Castro Street and Japantown before coming back to the hotel for hot tubbing. Would you, as a local and conneisseur of public transportation, recommend taking the bus or BART to get from the hotel to downtown areas? The bus is admittedly way cheaper, for out of towners like us, but I'll sacrifice a little extra money if the train schedules are more reliable and they take us where we want to be more quickly. Waste less time riding, spend more time sightseeing, no?

Thanks!

If you plan to take BART from downtown to SFO (and then take the shuttle to the Westin) if you want to stop by my workplace at the Metreon (4th & Mission) to say hi to me before you head over there, I'll be working until 6:00pm and then heading home before going over to the Westin. Mmm.. sushi.. it'll be good to get your fill of sushi before the Y-con weekend, although there IS a Benihana in Burlingame:

Benihana Tokyo 1496 Old Bayshore Highway (0.7 miles away from the con) Very easy to get there from the Westin.. just drive (or walk) down OBH and you'll get there easily.

hahahaa of course there are restraunts that are veggie friendly...living here has its advantages plus it would be stupid of me to not know  course some locals (that say they live there but are not born and raised) are kinda...stupid since they say they know the area but don't :untrust: take it from a true local here ^^ veggie places are always welcomed at all the restruants in the Millbrae/Burlingame area. I went to the Marriott to meet up with the Viko Arts (or formerly-known-as-Viko Arts cosplay group) for the photoshoot we had planned, but they were delayed getting back to the hotel via BART, and so after getting ready and eating dinner, we did a photoshoot in the Marriott hotel of 3/5 of the girls cosplaying their Soul Caliber 2 costumes. They couldn't bring their weapons with them (travelling all the way from Canada) but they'll have them at Sakuracon 2006, so expect more pictures from them at that con. ;) Thanks to Brooke, Karie, and Janelle for bringing & wearing their Soul Caliber costumes for the photoshoot! *hug x 3* It was a fun night and when I left the hotel after midnight, to my surprise I didn't have to pay for the self-parking. ;)

Now I'm off to finish packing, getting stuff ready for the swap-meet, and then some sleep.. See you all tomorrow or Saturday!! :skidude2:
