View Full Version : Ad Astra - Ugly Fabric Challenge!

01-12-2006, 01:29 PM
For 2006 we have devised a fun contest for those who are creative and have a sense of humour! I'm sure we've all seen that bolt at the store that made us cringe, cry, or burst out laughing, and this is where that poor fabric gets its moment in the sun!

The Ugly Fabric contest works like this: you will be given 2 yards of truly ugly fabric, and then it's your job to make an outfit/costume with it.

We will then have a little fashion show/contest at the con itself, and the winner will receive a $50 gift certificate for Fabricland (and the acclaim of their peers, lol).

- You must either send in 2 yards of the most hideous fabric you can find and $5 (for us to send you back fabric), or $10. We will then exchange the fabrics (supplemented, if necessary, with stuff we find) and send everyone ugly fabric.

- You can use the fabric in any way you want, but you must use at least 70% of the fabric you are given and it must be clearly visible on the costume (i.e. not just lining or piping). You may supplement with fabric from your own stash.

- Prize will go to the most innovative and/or amusing creation. Use your imaginations, go wild, and have fun!

If you're interested in participating in this contest, please PM me and I'll give you address info. ^_^

Deadline for entries (i.e. sending in fabric/money) is January 31! Please note that if we only get one or two entries we'll cancel the contest in favour of next year.

I wish there was something like this at a con near me. I'd totally participate (as long as the model could be someone else).

I've seen this done with quilts before but not costumes/clothing! I love the idea, and want to participate, but I don't think I'll have time to make yet another outfit.... (I've committed to making a bunch for school around the same time as the con, but don't even know how many yet! T_T )

So: excellent idea, good luck, and if it turns out I will have enough time after all, I will certainly enter!

I loved this idea when I first heard it months ago, so I really hope it does well. Personally, I'll have to pass, I'll just have too many final assignments due around Ad Astra, let alone getting my own costumes done in time. ^_^ But if you need any help in any other way, let me know and I'll see what I can do. ^_^

Saddly I'm too attached to my ugly fabric to donate it, even if it is for a worthy (and amusing) cause. ^_^

I'm going to enter!! Possibly even do 2 entries. If so then I won't be making masq. costumes for AA... still debating on the 1 or 2 issue.

Come on participate people! Lol.. otherwise this isn't going to happen!

What a marvelous idea.

My availability for the Ad Astra weekend is up in the air right now (boo), but Sarcasm-Hime, I'll PM you as soon as I can if I can do this.

Maybe next year. ^-^
