I need to make a Gryffindor and a Ravenclaw scarf and I'm wondering about how many rows for each color I should do. Looking at pics, my guess is maybe 10 but I want to know what other people have done. Thanks.

I ran into this yesterday in regards to the Anime Los Angeles convention coming up, but thought it might be helpful for you as well in regards to your question about the stripes of Harry Potter Scarves...
As you can tell, each movie's scarf is not only a bit different in color, its different in style....

I've found that Michaels has good yarn with their Wool-Ease worsted weight (mix of acrylic and wool), and a good selection of colors. Just another thought in case you want instant gratification. ^_^

I made one a wile back... I used US 9's and I did 5 1/2 inches of red and about 5 rows of gold... you only see 2 rows of gold on the "good" side though... I thought it looked nice, as long as it did not flip over and show the bad side.

The Atypically Knits pattern that Parasaurolophus recommended is the one that most people use, so that's a good place to start. There's also an LJ community devoted to Harry Potter knitting:
