View Full Version : Japanese covers of western songs

Okay, so I was listening to the radio, and heard a song that sounded REALLY familiar. I checked the song, and it was "Back to your heart" by Da Pump. I racked my brain trying to think why it sounded so familiar, but then I understood, it's a cover version of Backstreet Boys' "Back to you heart"! But in Japanese! Is this sorta thing normal in the field of Japanese music? O_o It really shocked me.

I'm pretty sure Utada Hikaru did a U2 cover in a concert. I forget which one. But I think the song was "With or Without You" and it might've been a mtv unplugged concert.

*nods* It was "With or Without you", it's very pretty. She also covered "Paint it Black". It's very strange, instead of being a dark rock song, it's a catchy pop song.

Shonen Knife does "I Wanna Be Sedated" by the Ramones.

It's pretty normal.

MAX, an all girl group, did a version of "Larger Than Life" by the Backstreet Boys called "Bara Iro no Hibi".. the lyrics were different, but it was the exact same music.

Utada Hikaru did "Paint it Black".. so did Koyasu Takehito, I think.. murr. My brain is fizzling out. *goes back to Devil May Cry*

I think Rina Chinen did a cover of Ricky Martin's "She Bangs" called "Club Zippangu."

Also, you can't forget Hiromi Go's annoying remake of "Livin' La Vida Loca" which he renamed "Goldfinger '99." *shudders*

Shimatani Hitomi - Papillion is a cover of Janet Jackson's "Doesn't Really Matter"

Aw aila beat me to Hiromi Go's song =/

Utada Hikaru has done her own versions of "Close To You", "Lovin' You" and "Fly Me to the Moon" but that doesn't really count since she didn't change the language.

02-24-2003, 12:41 PM
Eee! Yes! Umi! I was thinking of Hitomi's Papillion but couldn't remember the name. X_x; I'd love to hear that song again. <3 It was well done.

I have a rather...interesting cover of Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun" by Cibo Matto...I don't think it's in Japanese though, it sounds like it's in French or something O_o The title is still the same though. ^_^; Cibo Matto is a very...strange band. They normally sing in Engrish :B

This is totally unrelated to the topic, but --

Zelly ~ you have cosplayed Zell and like Asakura Daisuke. I like you. :D

02-24-2003, 03:34 PM

the best is "Summertime Blues" done by GUITAR WOLF!!!!!!!!

Goldfinger 99 is hilarious. That's just like YATTA....everybody should be subjected at least once.

I always have liked Penicillin's version of The Flame (even tho it comes out more like The Frame ^_-)

02-24-2003, 06:37 PM
Yay for engrish!
I think it's kind of flattering that they'd cover US songs. or maybe they're mocking us... hmm... XD

Misia does a cover of Loving You on uhhh well, one of her cds. While she sings it in very toned-down, Japanese-easy English, you can make out the words just fine. And she hits the high note, too. ^_^

And uh, Misia is awesome. I failed to mention that before all else.

02-25-2003, 12:03 AM
it's not really engrish, isami. They're singing in Japanese mostly except for maybe the Utada Hikaru songs I mentioned and the Misia (yes, i agree she does rock) song number 18 mentioned.

I've never heard Misia's cover but Utada Hikaru was raised in New York and by all accounts speaks english perfectly fine.

It occurs to me 5 billion years later that Sixpence None the Richer did a japanese version of "Kiss Me". Not a cover since they did it themselves but still worth mentioning. ^__^v

02-25-2003, 09:35 AM
Yeah. The Sixpence None the Richer Japanese version of Kiss Me is reaaaaally cute. If you have the ear for it, you can hear her cute accent as she sings. The Japanese version makes me wonder if they were bigger in Japan than in dee states.

And speaking of non-Japanese singing Japanese versinos of songs, I forget her name, but there is a famous female jazz singer (I guess - I'm not real knowledgeable about the jazz world...or she was popular in movies at a time or something) that moved to Japan to sing in Japanese night clubs. Her songs are in English, and she says oh yeah they can understand her. She just has to simplify the songs a little to something that's easier for them to understand, cause even though they learn English in school and all, most people can't understand "complex" English...thus all the engrish.................kinda.

Hmm...I like Aco's Creep...and Shonen Knife has quite a few covers ^^; I like their Top Of The World better than the original, because it's more rock and less hippie sounding...

Covers are always fun, because I never realize it's a cover because I don't know the original song o.o;

[ Shonen Knife does "I Wanna Be Sedated" by the Ramones. ]

OH YEAH! How could I forget Shonen Knife? ^^; They were called the "Osaka Ramones" and they toured with the Ramones once I'm pretty sure. And I think Joey sang at one or a few of their concerts.

-edit- They also did a song on a Carperters tribute album.

Oh, we mustn't forget X-Japan's cover of "20th Century Boy" and hide's cover of "Light my Fire!" :D I think it's cool when j-artists do covers of american songs, but I can't say I"ve ever heard any where they rewrote the lyrics...hm.
I'm really interested in hearing Hikki's version of "Paint it Black" now O_o and Koyasu? jeebus!

03-03-2003, 10:32 PM
wow, I can't believe I forgot to mention this, or anyone else did...but Yoshiki from X Japan did a rendition of "Black Diamond" by KISS! And it's actually on the KISS tribute album "KISS MY A**"! :D
