Never been to these and I don't live out that way but this is all I could find. Might want to post this in the Canada Cosplay section of the Canada Convention Forums :)

yeah, but the ninth of what month? unless you mean the 9th month (september?), in which case waiting for anime evolution (which CreativeGuy linked) shouldn't be a problem. There's also a smaller 2-day anime screening called J-Fest at the Art Institute (http://jfest.animeevolution.com/)

in that case you're right, anime evolution is a little later. You could go to J-Fest though (which I linked in my last post) - won't be as big as AE, but they will have a Hall Cosplay Contest

There's lots of different activities offered at conventions! Some of the most popular ones are cosplay contest (where people do short skits/performances in their costumes on stage), anime music video contests, and karaoke, and there are video rooms playing various anime all day, as well as game rooms (video games as well as tabletop gaming), and there's the dealers room where various different stores (be they online or physical) that specialize in anime or related things will have booths. Check out AE's programming page for some examples:
There are also panel discussions on various topics where the audience can ask questions on the topic (voice acting, cosplay makeup, etc.)
Most people don't go to everything though - the most fun is probably just wandering around with friends, taking pictures, meeting new people ^_^
