Karaoke is so much fun. At least, I think so. I love singing. What do you guys think? What do you think makes someone good/bad at karaoke? (besides singing voice)

I love karaoke! It's the best! ^-^ I practice constantly because my sister has this awesome karaoke machine that *somehow* made it's way into my room. I think people are good at karaoke despite their voice as long as they have confidence!

Karaoke's loads of fun but I have yet to try it in public >>;

What makes it fun is that you have fun doing it.

We went out last night, actually, for my birthday, to Karaoke. It was a Japanese place, so they had J rock and J pop and anime songs. None of us are perfect or anything, but hearing the songs and getting up and singing was mad fun.

FunfunKaraoke!!! Yaaay!

Energy and enjoying yourself makes someone good/bad at karaoke. :P

I love to sing, but I haven't sung at a con in about three years. *blink* I dunno why. Maybe this year I'll sing karaoke~ ^^

I've never done karaoke. I think it would be fun, but I'm not sure if I could ever get up the nerve to sing in front of people without a band behind me. I did a show with a local punk band that was rad as hell, and even though the focus wasn't all on me, I was scared to death. I think I'd probably go all wobbly knee-ed and not be able to make the words come out. o_O

QuEsTiOn! When you go to japanese karaoke places, are the songs in japanese, romanji or both? Ive never seen a romanji karaoke before, it would be so cool if there was since im japanese illiterate.

I don't have the balls to get up and sing in front of an audience.

You know what.....I just tried out for our school's version of "American Idol" and.... the judges simply broke me. Of course, I know I'm not a pop star nor will I ever fit the voice or the image. But I'm going to keep singing because I love singing, and I'm doing it for me. That's why you do karaoke. Because it's fun ^^

o____O What did they do? At a school? I'm afraid of Otaku Idol now. n.n;;

I'd like to participate in a Karaoke contest at AX...but I'm afraid it overlaps with Meet the Guests, which I LOVE going to...darn decisions...

You could just do regular open mic if it does indeed overlap. ^_^;

Yeah, it's a university, so it's not like they have to spare anyone's feelings ^^; Basically it was students who were the judges...who acted -exactly- like the judges on American idol. They were even trying to have the same personalities. (the evil one, the female one, and the not-so-evil one...i guess) I'm not sure how the Otaku Idol judges will be...but I guess what surprised me was that they were harsher than I expected. Oh well. Hehe I gave them NO reaction while I was on camera (just the occasional "Hmm...okay.") and that type of show THRIVES on drama...so..they'll prolly just skip over me.

To answer your question in what makes or break a performance...a main issue with contestants I've seen is their vocal projection. Sometimes their voice is too soft or the microphone doesn't pick it up. Also, memorizing lyrics is a good thing. (this is for contest karaoke) It's quite odd to see someone looking at the lyrics during the contest. Also, be prepared if you make it in the next round! You never know if you'll make it or not! I was surprised last year when I made it to the semi-finals. Also, don't just stand there! Be alive, have some energy going! Sometimes, karaoke performances will put me to sleep. The stage is your's, don't be afraid to express yourself through song (maybe a little dance or two)...but just keep it within the rules of the contest.

Karaoke is tons of fun. I want a system for my dorm next year, nyo.

Ceres: Japanese.

It gets surprsingly easier to read though as you get drunker. LOL.

There are many people with beautiful voices that I have heard at convention karaoke! I remember watching Yaya winning the competition at AX in 2000... her voice almost brought me to tears =p

However the one thing I am SUPER picky about is everyone's japanese pronunciation. =p While it might sound funny to people, I think it makes a difference when you are trying to sing in japanese.
